Moving with Grace: The Kathy Stanford Grant Story
Robert & Shayna reflect on the groundbreaking life of Kathleen “Kathy” Stanford Grant - dancer, choreographer, and first-generation Pilates instructor - whose artistry and teaching changed the landscape of movement, wellness, and possibility for generations. Born in Boston in 1921, Kathy’s early dream of ballet faced racial barriers, but her passion for dance led her to push past conventions and pioneer new paths in both performance and pedagogy. The discussion traces her journey: from studying at the Boston Conservatory, performing in nightclubs and Broadway, to a pivotal knee injury that introduced her to Joseph Pilates. Through rigorous apprenticeship she became one of only two people certified by Joseph Pilates himself. She went on to teach at Carola Trier’s studio, run the Pilates program at Henri Bendel in New York, and serve on the faculty of NYU Tisch School of the Arts, teaching dancers, students, and everyday people alike.Robert & Shayna also examine Kathy’s philosophy: pre-Pilates exercises she developed, her belief in mastering fundamentals before advancing, and how she tailored teaching to each individual’s body. They explore how she used her knowledge of dance, injury, and movement to rehabilitate, strengthen, and foster expression. Her influence lives on through her many students, the teachers she mentored, and the continued respect her methodologies inspire.A celebration of artistry, resilience, and how one woman’s dedication turned movement into a form of healing, community, and legacy.⭐ Don’t forget to subscribe, rate & review to help more people discover Black History Month Champions Legends!🎧 Listen now to all episodes on Global Player.📲 Download Global Player from your app store or visit 👉 www.globalplayer.comThis is a Global Original podcast, produced by Rhiannon Miller, Naomi Quartey, and Yunus Fikayo.
