On August 8th 2024, the Queer Heritage Initiative of New Brunswick held an event "BIPOC+ Queer New Brunswick Perspectives" in partnership with Blacklantic and Saint John Pride. The panel was hosted by Hillary LeBlanc of Blacklantic and panelists Victor Escobedo, Todd Ross and Normand Hector discussed their lived experiences of being members of the BIPOC+ Community in New Brunswick, recognition of survivors of the LGBT Purge and being part of the 2SLGBTQ+ newcomer community. On this week of BlackLantic, we sit down (in person) with the literary legend George Elliott Clarke who recently edited the autobiography of his mentor and father-figure, Black Activist, Black Scientist, Black Icon - The Story of Dr. Howard D. McCurdy. The story shares the life, triumph and struggles of a Black man who is not only extremely educated, named the New Democratic Party in Canada, accomplished an astonishing amount, yet never received the accolades deserved for his contributions to Canada until much later in life. Reading the book in 2024, you see McCurdy fight for the same political issues we are fighting today. While we are not historians, we are so thrilled to be given these opportunities to speak about the history of Black people in New Brunswick and the attrocities they have faced through the years. The author splits her time between Toronto and Halifax. Not only has the author and writing professor written across genres, she has also worked as a CBC producer, acquisition editor, social worker, stage manager, and documentary director. Wanda has lots to share with her readers and the world, and I’m confident a conversation with her will bring about many fascinating and inspiring stories for your audience as well.
