The Lindsay Clancy case in America has been one of the most scrutinised, analysed and talked-about cases in a long time.Clancy is a Massachusetts mother who killed her three young children in 2023, in a case centred on whether she was criminally responsible or suffering from postpartum psychosis. Her trial very recently ended with a hung jury, meaning that a decision could not be reached.One of the by-products of the entire case has been the realisation that mothers, and fathers, are often let down when it comes to matters of pre- and postnatal depression. I started to realise how little I know about the entire subject, and how little I’ve ever heard about it in general.Then, in a bit of a serendipitous discovery, I saw Mhairi talking about her own experience with pre- and postnatal depression. I was really struck by the coherence, candour, sincerity and even humour of her recollections of an utterly awful experience.Now, I know Mhairi well, and I know how she expresses herself, so the podcaster in me kicked in, and we had a chat about having the conversation. I’m really glad that we did.I found it revealing, enlightening, educational and, in the end, uplifting. She went through hell, and I think probably experienced what a huge amount of people do, without ever speaking about it out loud.Mhairi isn’t someone seeking the spotlight or trying to draw out a traumatic experience for personal gain. She’s a young, devoted mother with a lovely wee boy who she lives for. The pervasive, mendacious and downright malevolent diatribe directed towards immigrants in the UK – or those wrongly categorised as such – irrespective of their social, economic or citizenship status, is at what feels like an all time high. So who better to hear from than someone who’s experiencing this continuing embarrassment to Britain. Step forward, Aarti Joshi. Aarti is a good friend of mine and was previously a guest on Blethered back in 2021, where we discussed what it’s like to be a Scottish-indian woman in a so-called man’s world. Aarti is a strong-willed, intelligent, Scottish woman who is fiercely proud of her heritage, and so she should be. I knew she’d give me a no-holds barred account of what life has been like lately. The trigger point for this sit-down was the sudden appearance of flags hung from lampposts, all over North Glasgow, where I’m from. This was irrefutably and undeniably an attempt to intimidate those deemed to be nonindigenous from Scotland and the UK in general, and it succeeded in its attempt to instil fear in those it was aimed at.In the face of bullies, and especially in that vein, neutrally is not an option. It’s silent support of the systematic bullying and scapegoating of people who do not deserve it. Are they performative and without any discernible positive outcome, or should we just be satisfied with hashtags and fluffy social media posts?We’re in an undeniable mental health crisis, that worsens year on year. Is that just a random occurrence that’s exacerbated by Instagram and seeing everyone else having a good time? Or is it a direct consequence of communities being deliberately under-funded, wages NOT rising in relative teams for 18 years, despite prices spiralling out of control to the immense profit of opportunistic and callous companies, little sign of hope for hard-working, honest people and a constantly impending sense of doom?
