The Market's New Pressure Points: Rates, Oil & AI
Trade developments, oil prices, inflation expectations, and long-term interest rates continue to be important factors influencing the current market outlook. At the same time, investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure is introducing new considerations for corporate financing and debt markets. In this episode, Daniel Dusina, CFA, and Vince Parrack, CFA, discuss: · Recent U.S.-Canada trade developments and the potential inflationary effects of tariffs · Oil prices, U.S.-Iran relations, and the challenges supply-driven inflation may present for the Federal Reserve · The Federal Reserve's policy considerations as inflation and economic growth send mixed signals · Factors influencing long-term Treasury yields and the potential effects of higher borrowing costs · How investment in AI infrastructure is affecting debt markets and raising questions about financing, valuations, and future profitability As companies invest significant capital in data centers, semiconductors, and computing infrastructure, market participants continue to evaluate both the potential opportunities associated with AI and the costs and risks of financing that development. "This artificial intelligence buildout, this AI boom, is no longer just a technology story, and it's no longer just an equity market story. It's becoming a capital market story." – Daniel Dusina With inflation, economic growth and geopolitical developments sending conflicting signals, Daniel and Vince break down what investors should be watching as volatility continues across both stocks and bonds. Quarterly Edge: Q1, 2026 Investment Outlook: Are We in a Market Bubble?
Want to learn more about how these market themes may fit into a broader financial strategy? www.bluechippartners.com As Blue Chip Partners kicks off the first quarter of 2026, CIO Daniel Dusina, CFA, and Managing Partner Dan Seder, CFA, CMT, CFP® sit down to discuss the economic landscape, equity market concerns, and the evolving role of bonds in diversified portfolios. Despite lingering data challenges from late 2025, the conversation highlights surprisingly resilient U.S. economic growth, the continued impact of AI investment, and how labor and inflation remain central to Federal Reserve decision-making. The discussion also tackles one of the most common investor questions today: are we in a stock market bubble? By examining valuations through a growth-adjusted lens, the team explains why elevated prices alone don't tell the full story. They also explore why small-cap and international equities are quietly gaining momentum for the first time in nearly two decades, and why bonds may continue to serve as an important stabilizer as interest rates trend lower. Manufacturing Slumps, Services Hold Strong: December Market Insight
Interested in how economic data may influence your financial plan? https://hubs.li/Q03X_VHN0 In this episode of Blue Chip NOW!, Daniel Dusina, CFA and the team unpack what has been a surprisingly eventful start to December across the equity and fixed-income markets. The discussion kicks off with the early-month sell-off in technology and crypto assets—largely sentiment-driven—before shifting into the rapid rebound fueled by optimism around artificial intelligence and expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut. The team explains how anticipation rather than hard data has been the main driver of equity strength and why that dynamic can cut both ways. The conversation then turns to the broader economic picture, highlighting conflicting signals from manufacturing and services data. Manufacturing has now been in contraction for nine consecutive months, while services remain firmly in expansion territory. The hosts break down how these divergences could affect hiring, corporate investment, consumer spending, and ultimately market behavior. They also explore the recent steepening of the Treasury yield curve, persistent inflation concerns, and how rate decisions may ripple across stocks and bonds as the Fed prepares for its December meeting. "The slump did not stick. You had a bit of a reversal after the very early innings of December." – Daniel Dusina Disclaimer: Expressions of opinion are subject to change without notice. Thankful for Data: AI Momentum, Rate Expectations, and What's Driving Markets Now
👉 Need help making sense of today's markets? www.bluechippartners.com In this episode, the team walks through a timely Thanksgiving-week market update covering U.S. equities, Federal Reserve expectations, cryptocurrency volatility, and international market performance. The conversation begins with the sharp move higher in equities—powered largely by the AI theme and companies such as Alphabet. They discuss the tension between AI-driven enthusiasm and the macro tug-of-war created by evolving interest-rate expectations. The hosts emphasize how today's tech giants appear to be different from the unproven companies of the early-2000s tech bubble. They then shift to Federal Reserve dynamics, highlighting the divide among policymakers regarding the pace of future rate cuts. Perspectives from Fed officials and Vanguard's fixed-income team point to concerns about the market potentially overestimating the number of cuts ahead. The group also examines Bitcoin's significant ETF outflows, momentum-driven selling, and the lack of earnings anchors in crypto markets. The episode closes with a look at international equities, which appear to have benefited from U.S. government shutdown and shifting sentiment toward more value-oriented sectors abroad. #80: Big Tech's $800B Drop, Fed's Balancing Act, and a Data-Driven Market Pause
Volatility happens. Preparation is what counts. Connect with Blue Chip: https://www.bluechippartners.com In this episode of Blue Chip NOW!, Daniel Dusina, CFA, Matt Mondoux, CFA, CMT, CFP®, and Daniel Seder, CFA, CMT, CFP® dive into the recent turbulence across markets, especially among artificial intelligence and big tech stocks. The team discusses how AI-linked giants like Nvidia, Meta, and Oracle collectively shed $800 billion in value over one week — signaling that investor optimism around endless AI growth might be tempering. The team weighs whether this volatility is simply a natural "hiccup" in a fast-moving sector or the start of a more sustained cooldown and stresses the importance of thoughtful position sizing as tech valuations evolve. From there, the conversation moves to the Federal Reserve's recent interest rate cut and its cautious messaging on future moves. The hosts break down how the Fed's "cut, but wait" approach is shaping monetary expectations and market sentiment. They also address the ongoing government shutdown delaying key data releases, the implications for investor confidence, and the growing chatter about regional bank credit issues. The episode closes with perspective on credit spreads and why, despite some widening, the current environment isn't yet cause for alarm — just a reminder that prudent portfolio monitoring remains essential. #77: Quarterly Edge - Q4 2025: Consumer Strength, Fed Cuts, and Market Strategy for Investors
Spend Confidently. Live without Regret: https://www.bluechippartners.com In this edition of Blue Chip NOW! Quarterly Edge, Chief Investment Officer Daniel Dusina and Managing Partner Dan Seder break down the state of the U.S. economy, markets, and what could be ahead for investors. They highlight the economy's surprising resilience, with GDP growth revised up to 3.8%, supported by strong consumer spending and healthy balance sheets—even as labor market softness emerges. Inflation has ticked higher, but with the Fed cutting rates to support employment, the challenge is avoiding a rebound in price pressures. The discussion then shifts to market valuations and opportunities. While large-cap tech skews headline indices, sectors like consumer discretionary and healthcare appear undervalued on an equal-weighted basis. With money market yields set to fall as rates decline, investors may reallocate cash into stocks and bonds. The takeaway: the economy remains resilient, but smart selectivity and close attention to the Fed, labor, and consumer psychology will matter most in the months ahead. "It should be no surprise that as goes the consumer, so goes the US economy, as the consumer is roughly 70% of GDP." – Daniel Dusina Disclaimer: Expressions of opinion are subject to change without notice. #75: From Summer Fun to Market Shifts: September Insights
Spend Confidently. Live without Regret: https://www.bluechippartners.com In this episode of Blue Chip Now, the team kicks things off with post–Labor Day reflections and the shift from summer into fall routines. As the discussion moves into the markets, they highlight how September can bring heightened activity and renewed volatility after a quieter summer. The conversation explores several pressing financial topics: the uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariffs after a recent appeals court ruling, ripple effects in the bond market as yields near 5%, and the fragility of investor sentiment around artificial intelligence companies. The team discusses the importance of diversification, especially as market leadership rotates between sectors like tech, energy, and financials. The episode closes with reminders that despite volatility, markets appear to be resilient and at record highs, providing an opportunity for long-term investors to stay balanced and seek broader opportunities. "When it's the same seven, eight, nine stocks leading the market, diversification is not paid. But when you see moves like this, that's when it's a nice reminder that diversification, over the long run, does pay." – Matt Mondoux Expressions of opinion are subject to change without notice. #73: Quarterly Edge – Q3 2025: Liberation Day to Bond Stability
Spend Confidently. Live without Regret: www.bluechippartners.com In this edition of the Blue Chip NOW! Quarterly Edge, Daniel Dusina, CFA, and Dan Seder, CFA, CMT, CFP® unpack the complex economic landscape heading into the second half of 2025. They highlight how uncertainty — driven primarily by unresolved tariff developments — is affecting not only investor sentiment but also labor market behaviors. Notably, data shows that job-switchers are no longer seeing significantly higher wage growth compared to those staying with the same employer, indicating a broad shift in corporate caution and workforce dynamics. The episode also explores rising U.S. debt levels relative to GDP and why perception—not just the math—matters most when it comes to financial system risk. Shifting gears to the stock market, the hosts reflect on the post-Liberation Day sell-off, sector-specific volatility, and the persistent influence of geopolitical tensions like the Israel-Iran conflict. They close by discussing the resilience of the bond market, noting that higher yields and sustained foreign investment suggest an enduring value proposition for fixed income allocations. #70: Tariffic News! Markets Cheer the Ceasefire, but is It Built to Last?
In this episode of Blue Chip NOW!, hosts Daniel Dusina, CFA®, Matt Mondoux, CFA®, CMT, CFP®, and Dan Seder, CFA®, CMT, CFP® dive deep into the evolving dynamics of global trade and investor sentiment. Kicking things off with a reflection on a news-filled Mother's Day weekend, they unpack the latest developments in U.S.–China tariff negotiations. With a 90-day tariff exemption window opening up between the nations, the conversation turns to how this temporary truce is impacting investor psychology, market sentiment, and near-term economic outlooks. The team reflects on how investor optimism has been bolstered not by confirmed policy changes but by hopeful signals, and why that matters. The second half of the show turns its focus to the behavioral finance factors shaping investment decisions right now—loss aversion, recency bias, and fear of missing out. They explore why investors tend to act irrationally during volatile periods and how even long-term strategic allocations are being tested. Discussions also include technical indicators like the 200-day moving average, the seasonality of market returns, and how blending fundamental and technical analysis is critical in times of uncertainty. The episode wraps with lighthearted reflections on personal stories, market metaphors, and a surprise papal connection to baseball history. "The market rally has been driven on hope, and certainly for any Andor fans out there—hope, you know, rebellions are built on hope—but this is no rebellion. #69: Tariff Turbulence: You Don't Need a Parachute
In this episode of Blue Chip NOW!, hosts Daniel Dusina, CFA, Matt Mondoux, CMT, CFA, CFP®, and Dan Seder, CMT, CFA, CFP® sit down to tackle one of the most volatile stretches the market has seen in recent memory. They discuss how tariff uncertainties, political pressures, and tech stock valuations have created sharp market swings, and why it's so important to avoid making emotional investment decisions during turbulent times. The team walks through how the investment committee at Blue Chip Partners approached recent volatility — emphasizing patience, long-term thinking, and a commitment to disciplined strategy even when conditions feel unstable. They also dive deep into the concept of "buying the dip," explaining why today's environment demands a company-by-company evaluation rather than a blanket investment approach. Later in the conversation, they explore broader investor behavior patterns: the importance of individualized strategies based on risk tolerance, how asset allocation can be adjusted in stressful environments, and why maintaining consistent communication with clients is critical. Tactical analysis, the role of the VIX as a measure of expected volatility, and why volatility itself is a "price" that investors must pay for future returns are key themes throughout the discussion. Whether you're wondering how to respond to market turbulence, thinking about rebalancing your portfolio, or just seeking reassurance during a rocky time, this episode offers clear, thoughtful insights — without the hype. Quotes: "It's like getting on a plane… You're not going to grab a parachute and jump out the back if the pilot says we're going to experience some turbulence. You buckle up."– Dan Seder Volatility is the price you pay for return. It's meant to be uncomfortable. If it wasn't, everybody would do it, this would be no problem, and nobody would have a dollar parked in a bank account." – Matt Mondoux "Our advisors… have tried to be very in front of the curveball in trying to make sure there's a dialogue that's ongoing." – Daniel Dusina Timestamps: 00:00:00 - Episode Intro – The hosts reunite to kick off the conversation and reflect on recent market shifts. 00:01:32 - Tariffs and Economic Uncertainty – How pending tariffs and the lack of immediate economic data are complicating investment decisions. 00:02:14 - The Danger of Reacting Too Fast – Insights into why knee-jerk selling often does more harm than good for investors. 00:03:00 - Political Influence on the Stock Market – How political actions and rhetoric have been influencing stocks and bonds. 00:05:11 - Should Investors "Buy the Dip"? – A thoughtful discussion about why dip-buying isn't a blanket strategy and needs company-specific analysis. 00:07:49 - How Different Investors React to Volatility – Breaking down four different paths investors typically take during market stress. 00:10:47 - VIX and Dow Volatility Expectations – Translating the VIX into practical day-to-day market expectations and volatility mindset shifts. 00:13:14 - Volatility is the Price of Admission – A reminder that discomfort is the cost investors pay for long-term growth. 00:16:12 - Staying Engaged Through Uncertainty – Why keeping up consistent client communication is vital even if no dramatic portfolio moves are made. 00:17:22 - Economic Strength in Pockets – Despite volatility, certain economic sectors like housing and autos show underlying resilience. 00:18:33 - Risk and Inflation-Adjusted Returns – Why investors must embrace volatility to beat inflation over time. 00:20:24 - Managing Volatility Expectations – Using the plane turbulence analogy to normalize wild market swings without panic. 00:21:39 - Final Thoughts on Patient Investing – Wrapping up by reinforcing the importance of discipline, communication, and trust in the long term. Information Technology Has Been a Key Driver of Domestic Earnings Over The Last Two Years
Consensus estimates point to 12.50% earnings growth for the S&P 500 Index in 2025, with elevated expectations visible in the information technology, consumer discretionary, and health care sectors. As information technology has been a key driver of domestic earnings over the last two years, the sector has comprised a larger and larger share of overall index earnings. The current level is not necessarily concerning, but the concept bears consideration. Elevated earnings concentration can introduce index-level volatility should estimates change, especially given that the sector in question constitutes 33% of the S&P 500 Index. On the contrary, we see potential for diversification of earnings within the U.S. market. As earnings growth from the "Magnificent 7" tapers, contribution from a broader subset is expected in 2025. Robust earnings growth across a more diversified slate can stoke a more inclusive rally in the domestic equity market. Managing your own $500K+ portfolio? Avoid these things for your financial health.
Are you managing your own portfolio or outsourcing to a professional? If you're looking at an investment structure, why not think of individual stocks? Tax intricacies on mutual funds are muddy as best. When stocks work against us it's our job to harvest the loss, bank it and set it aside. You can use those losses for years to benefit your bank account when pulling money out for a big project, to buy a house, or anything else that would incur capital gains. This tax harvesting strategy is possible with the purchase of a well-diversified portfolio of individual stocks. With mutual funds the intricacies around taxes aren't as clear. But with individual stocks and the right professionals in your corner, you could have a significant difference in payout when you're realizing capital gains with a well-diversified portfolio of individual stocks.
