For months now, we’ve been dropping hints and waiting to finally share this case with you. Now we have the unique opportunity of sharing a story that has been trapped in the dark for three-quarters of a century: the missing persons case of two-year-old Earnest Cagle Jr.On August 27, 1950, little Earnest vanished from the backseat of his family’s car outside a tavern in Buckhart, Illinois. Despite massive searches, the trail went entirely cold. Decades passed, the headlines faded, and terrifyingly, the official systems meant to look for missing children completely forgot he was gone. But is anyone every truly forgotten? Not on this podcast. We’re pulling back the curtain on how a case sits outside the system for a lifetime, and the intense behind-the-scenes hurdles we faced to finally get Earnest Cagle Jr. into a missing persons database 76 years later.SOURCES:https://sangamoncountyhistory.org/2-year-old-vanishes-1950/https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/1s82has/in_the_summer_of_1950_2yearold_earnest_cagle_jr/?share_id=Ec_tUYEPetbm1RoqKRFBx&utm_content=2&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1 https://imgur.com/a/sQOg3YFhttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/101845582/earnest_doss-caglehttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/27661107/hattie_adeline-caglehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/1324760865/?match=1&terms=earnest%20caglehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/85369970/?match=1&terms=earnest%20caglehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/85369026/?match=1&terms=earnest%20caglehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/1303733602/?match=1&terms=cecil%20delay%20tavern https://www.newspapers.com/image/1303731320/?match=1&terms=cecil%20delay%20tavern

    97. Indiana Cold Case: The Murder of Essie McVey

In August 2011, 85-year-old Essie Mae McVey was found barely alive on the floor of her Greencastle, Indiana condo—shot in the back of the head in what investigators believe was a burglary gone wrong. But here’s the thing… nothing was taken. No forced entry. No witnesses. No murder weapon. And in a quiet community just miles from DePauw University, the case barely made headlines. In this episode, we’re diving into the unsolved murder of Essie McVey—a grandmother of three children, ten grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren—whose life was taken in a matter of minutes during a narrow 76-minute window in broad daylight.SOURCES:https://www.suncommercial.com/banner_graphic/archives/article_eb0325f4-fdc6-5952-a1b4-db370f9929f2.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/126386679/?match=1&terms=essie%20mcveyhttps://www.suncommercial.com/banner_graphic/archives/article_6f35080f-1456-535e-9ea5-ec6bca1d0d37.html https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/greencastle-in/essie-mc-vey-4800977

    96. The Murder of 18-Year-Old Eleanor Kaatz

In 1964, an 18-year-old girl was walking to school in Wausau, Wisconsin… and never made it.Eleanor Kaatz was attacked in broad daylight on a quiet island. Stabbed nearly 50 times and left near the river, she was somehow still alive when she was found. But two days later, she died from her injuries. The man responsible, Terry Caspersen, was caught almost immediately. What he admitted—and what investigators uncovered—painted the picture of a deeply disturbed young man capable of extreme violence. But what makes this case even more unsettling… is that it didn’t end with her murder. After serving years in prison, he was released—only to attack again. This is the story of a murder that shocked a community, a victim who fought to survive, and a killer whose violence didn’t stop when it should have.SOURCES:Coming soon!

    92. The Mysterious & Unsolved Murder of Larry Groves

In January 2003, 40-year-old Lawrence “Larry” Groves vanished from his Lakeville, Indiana home.Months later, after black flies swarmed the siding of his house and blackbirds gathered in the yard, a horrific discovery was made beneath a hidden trap door in the floor — Larry’s body, concealed in the crawl space under his home. What followed was a case filled with unanswered questions, conflicting reports, suspicious activity, and DNA that led nowhere. Larry had fought back. Evidence was found. A person of interest was identified. And yet, more than two decades later, his murder remains unsolved.Larry was openly gay in a time and place where that came with risk. He was vibrant, unapologetic, deeply loyal to his friends — and, according to some, overlooked by a community that didn’t always accept him.Why didn’t this case receive more attention?Who was banging on his door the night he was last heard from? And how does a case with DNA evidence still go cold?Today, we’re diving into the still-unsolved 2003 homicide of Lawrence Howard Groves — Indiana Cold Case #80 on the T.I.P.S. deck. For anyone who might have information related to the homicide of Mr. Groves, they can call the Indiana State Police Cold Case hotline at 833-466-2653, send an email to [email protected], or call the ISP Bremen Post at 574-546-4900 and ask to speak with Det. 91. The Nose Doctor: Operating for Profit

After covering a string of heavy cases, we’re diving into one that’s equal parts shocking, infuriating, and unbelievable—but very real. This episode unpacks the crimes of Mark Weinberger, a once-celebrated Indiana ENT known as “The Nose Doctor.” What appeared to be a thriving sinus surgery empire was, in reality, a massive scheme involving unnecessary and harmful surgeries, fraudulent insurance billing, and devastating consequences for hundreds of patients—including children. When lawsuits and federal charges began closing in, Weinberger vanished—abandoning his wife on her birthday during a luxury trip to Greece and sparking an international manhunt straight out of Dateline. But his capture didn’t bring justice to everyone he harmed, and his story didn’t end there. We break down the rise, fall, and disturbing aftermath of a doctor who mutilated patients for profit—and why cases like this are far more common than we want to believe. We also talk about red flags, patient advocacy, and how vulnerable populations are disproportionately harmed by medically unnecessary procedures. This one is wild. 90. DNA Delivers in April Tinsley’s Murder Investigation with ISP Capt. Kevin Smith

In April 1988, eight-year-old April Marie Tinsley disappeared while walking in her Fort Wayne, Indiana neighborhood — and three days later her body was found in a ditch, the victim of a brutal kidnapping, sexual assault, and strangulation. What followed would become one of Indiana’s most haunting cold cases: for more than 30 years, the killer remained at large, taunting investigators and the community with cryptic notes and DNA-linked clues left around town.Despite extensive local and federal investigation, including leads on threatening messages discovered in the 1990s and 2000s, the case went unresolved — until advances in forensic genealogy finally broke it open. In 2018, investigators used cutting-edge DNA analysis and genealogy databases to identify John D. Miller, a reclusive local man, as the perpetrator. In this episode, we dive deep into the emotional and investigative journey behind the case — and sit down with Captain Kevin Smith of the Indiana State Police, who leads the newly formed ISP cold case team. Captain Smith shares firsthand insights from years of painstaking work, the challenges of tracking a killer across decades, and how evolving forensic tools finally brought justice for April. It’s a story of loss, persistence, and the relentless pursuit of answers that no case — no matter how old — should be forgotten.SOURCES:

89: The Boys on the Tracks: The Unsolved Murders of Don Henry and Kevin Ives

In August 1987, teenagers Don Henry and Kevin Ives were killed when a freight train struck them as they lay on railroad tracks near Alexander, Arkansas. Authorities initially ruled the deaths an accident, claiming the boys had fallen asleep on the tracks. But their families challenged that conclusion, leading to a second autopsy and a grand jury ruling the case a probable homicide. As the investigation unfolded, witnesses died under suspicious circumstances, allegations of corruption surfaced, and theories emerged suggesting the teens may have witnessed criminal activity. 87. Henryk Siwiak: The Forgotten Murder of 9/11

On a day when the world stood still, one New York City murder vanished into the blur of chaos. Just before midnight on September 11, 2001, Henryk Siwiak, a 46-year-old Polish immigrant, was shot to death while on his way to work at a Brooklyn grocery store. With the NYPD stretched beyond capacity, resources diverted, and a city in chaos, the investigation stalled almost immediately. More than two decades later, Henryk’s death remains the only unsolved homicide recorded in New York City on 9/11. Soft-spoken, hardworking, and new to America, Siwiak had spent his final year juggling multiple jobs to support his family back home. But on the night he set out in search of honest work, he crossed paths with violence no one has yet been able to explain.SOURCES:https://www.ranker.com/list/overlooked-case-connections/patrick-thorntonhttps://abcnews.go.com/US/asked-evening-murder-911-unsolved-york-city/story?id=57457505https://abc7ny.com/post/henry-siwak-september-11-murder-bedford-stuyvesant/13781934/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Henryk_Siwiak https://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/10/nyregion/brooklyn-murder-on-sept-11-2001-remains-unsolved.html?_r=0https://www.refworld.org/reference/countryrep/hrw/2002/en/21884https://www.cbsnews.com/news/law-enforcement-warning-threat-jewish-israeli-supporters/

    79. Idling on the Interstate: What Happened to Paige Renkoski?

In 1990, substitute teacher Paige Marie Renkoski, 30, vanished under chilling circumstances on Interstate 96 near Fowlerville, Michigan. What began as an ordinary day—dropping her mother at the airport and stopping at a store in Canton—ended in a mystery that remains unsolved over three decades later.Witnesses last saw Paige appearing upset and speaking with two men beside a maroon minivan. Hours later, her 1986 Oldsmobile was found idling on the roadside with her purse and shoes inside—but no sign of Paige. The case suffered early missteps: police treated the scene as an abandoned vehicle rather than a potential crime scene, delaying vital investigation. Despite fingerprints, tips, searches—like ground-penetrating radar and FBI digs—no trace of Paige has ever been found. The case remains one of Michigan’s most puzzling cold cases, with authorities believing it may only be solved if someone steps forward, perhaps even decades from now.Join us as we unravel the timeline, examine the evidence, explore the tragic theories, and sit with the hope—and heartbreak—that still lingers in the search for Paige.SOURCES: coming soon!

    70. The Unsolved Murder of Emily Pike with Robert Anglen and Lauren De Young

We’re thrilled to bring you a first in this episode: not one, but two special guests — neither of whom we know personally! We're honored to be joined by Robert Anglen and Lauren De Young from AZCentral, a newspaper with the USA Today network. Together, we’ll be discussing the unsolved murder of 14-year-old Emily Pike in Arizona.Emily was an Indigenous teen who loved the color pink, her cat, and all things glitter. In January, she went missing after sneaking out of the group home where she was staying in Mesa. For nearly three weeks, her loved ones searched for her— until her body was tragically discovered, dismembered and left in garbage bags off Highway 60. Police are actively investigating, but many questions remain unanswered. By sharing Emily’s story, we can help bring attention to her case and, hopefully, find the justice and peace that she and her family deserve.SOURCES:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mIzynuFs1Ahttps://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/missing-persons-report-14-year-old-emily-pike-reveals-more-details-lead-up-her-gut-wrenching-deathhttps://peoplesworld.org/article/murder-of-14-year-old-emily-pike-san-carlos-apache-sparks-grief-among-indigenous-nationwide/https://www.azfamily.com/2025/03/18/authorities-investigate-another-murder-where-emily-pikes-remains-were-found/https://www.abc15.com/news/state/sister-of-native-man-killed-four-years-ago-speaks-out-about-casehttps://ictnews.org/news/apache-strong-mural-honors-slain-teen-emily-pikehttps://www.yahoo.com/news/san-carlos-apache-tribe-demands-184326871.htmlhttps://www.12news.com/article/news/crime/true-crime/arizona-legislature-oversight-hearing-group-home-policies-emily-pikes-murder/75-17c294f0-700e-4bac-be76-efc54d3a509chttps://www.desertsun.com/story/news/local/cathedral-city/2025/03/14/rally-for-slain-indigenous-girl-emily-pike-held-in-cathedral-city/82365655007/https://www.azcentral.com/staff/2648394001/robert-anglen/https://www.azcentral.com/staff/75165552007/lauren-de-young/https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/emily-pike-teen-did-not-want-go-back-group-home-more-than-year-before-her-murder-report-sayshttps://tip411.com/sign_inhttps://www.abc15.com/news/local-news/investigations/foster-home-ceo-confident-emily-pikes-killer-will-be-foundhttps://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/reward-grows-emily-pike-case-investigators-look-leadshttps://www.12news.com/article/news/regional/native-america/emily-pike-mmiw-murder-funeral/75-6f75e989-2a0f-4c58-92b1-418e686bdead https://www.12news.com/article/news/regional/native-america/emily-pike-mmiw-murder-funeral/75-6f75e989-2a0f-4c58-92b1-418e686bdeadhttps://azmirror.com/2025/03/17/apache-strong-mural-honors-slain-teen-emily-pike-as-community-demands-justice/https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/celebration-life-honored-14-year-old-emily-pike-highlights-her-zest-life-calls-justicehttps://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/death-emily-pike-teen-found-dismembered-arizona-spurs-calls-regulation-rcna197982https://apnews.com/article/san-carlos-apache-teen-mmip-8daaafb54cbd8a2ac635ec796baa0b16

    69. Vacation Turned Nightmare: The Akeo Timeshare Dispute

A Michigan couple, Paul and Christy Akeos, are currently detained in Mexico after being accused by a timeshare company, Palace Resorts, of fraud. The company alleges the couple breached their membership contracts by promoting their benefits on social media and encouraging others to exploit them. They also dispute over $100,000 in chargebacks. The Akeos' lawyer denies the fraud claims. The family says they have proof that Palace Resorts breached their contract, and that the chargebacks are legal. You may remember Lindsey Hull from our guest episode on Larry Nassar. Beyond being a wonderful guest, she’s a close friend of Mallory’s and more like family. Christy and Paul are her mom and stepdad. This situation has been incredibly hard to navigate and now we need your help. PLEASE, if you feel inclined… research, share, tag and call upon lawmakers to bring momma Christy and Paul HOME #JusticeForAkeos#UPDATE: The family’s lawyer confirms that the evidence the Akeo’s defense team submitted in their second hearing was not admitted, simply because it was not in Spanish. The judge has also granted Palace Resorts a six month extension to gather evidence, and denied house arrest to the Akeos… meaning they are stuck in the Mexican prison for at least another six months. We will continue to provide updates as we get them. 68. Indiana Cold Cases: The Murders of Keyla Weddel and Sheri Herr

This week we're examining two Indiana cold cases that happened within a year of each other. In both cases a young woman was murdered and police seem to know who committed the crime but don't have enough evidence to go to court. However, one case received a ton of local media attention, while the other hasn't been mentioned since 1995. Get ready to park yourself at speculation station because we have A LOT TO SAY. 66. Shrinkflation: A Shady, Shrouded, but Sanctioned Business Strategy

We needed a bit of a palette cleanser, so Megan is bringing us back into the world of white-collar crime. However, today's case is TECHNICALLY legal, it doesn't make it any less shady. Shrinkflation is when a company makes changes to a product, reducing its value, while keeping the price the same or even increasing the price ever so slightly. This entirely legal practice is yet another way for companies to cut corners at the expense of consumers. BUT we're here to help you stay informed and know what to look for! 64. The Police-Involved Death of Ronald Greene

In May of 2019, 49-year-old Ronald Greene died after being arrested by Louisiana State Police after a chase. Body camera footage, released YEARS after the incident, shows troopers beating, choking, stunning, and dragging him on the ground while handcuffed. He was left face down on the ground for nine minutes. He died on the way to the hospital. At least six white troopers were involved in the arrest; five were criminally charged in December 2022. As of January 2025, no officer has served any jail time in connection to Greene’s death. And just last week, federal prosecutors told the family they would not bring ANY charges in his death… citing insufficient evidence. Ronald Greene was a barber. A cancer survivor. A father. He was beloved by those who knew him. And he deserves justice. Listen along as Megan breaks down what happened. 55. A Culture of Abuse: The Larry Nassar Case with Lindsey Hull

In this powerful guest episode, we dive into a deeply personal story with Lindsey Hull, Mallory’s lifelong best friend, former competitive gymnast, and a survivor of sexual abuse. Lindsey bravely shares her journey, including her decision in 2017 to join the lawsuit against disgraced U.S. Olympic doctor Larry Nassar. But for Lindsey, Larry was more than just a doctor—he was a family friend, a neighbor, and someone she once considered a safe haven from the abusive culture within her gymnastics organization. In this episode, Lindsey opens up about her relationship with Larry, the moment she realized she was a victim of his decades-long manipulation, and her fight for justice against him and his enablers. 54. Taking On Ticketmaster: Taylor Swift vs A Music Monopoly

This week, we're taking a back seat to some of the more brutal crime cases we cover. Megan surprised Mallory with a white-collar CALAMITY centered around her favorite artist: Taylor Swift. At this point, we have all seen the massive success of the Eras Tour. But before our beloved blondie could kick off her largest concert venture to date she had to deal with the fallout of Ticketmaster's registration and sale for the event. The outrage that followed led to multiple lawsuits and congressional hearings. Prepare for Mal's soapbox and more than a few song references. Inside a rough and ruthless newsroom, thousands of stories fight for the spotlight but only a few survive past their 15 minutes of fame. So what makes for a "good" headline? And what makes for a buried byline? Join Megan DeLucenay and Mallory Wilson, two former television news producers as they dig up stories that never got the recognition or justice they deserve.
