In this episode we meet Ugolino, who has chosen to eat the head of his hated enemy, the Archbishop Ruggieri, for all eternity, and who supplies us with the most disturbing bit of poetry in the entire Inferno. We also meet two souls who have somehow managed to end up in Hell while their bodies still walk around on earth. We discuss hatred, forgiveness, real love, Judas' betrayal, mortally sinning with your thoughts, and how we cannot let our hatred for an enemy become an idol.

In this episode we enter the Bolgia of the Falsifiers, who spend their eternity hating "What Is" because it is not subject to their will. We encounter alchemists, who scratch themselves due to their interior, spiritual illness. We talk about the joys and challenges of raising small children, being present, being grateful, escapism, loving the duty of the moment, loving the cross, being the author of your own story, self-hatred, and why loving "What Is" is the opposite of doing nothing.

In this episode we descend into the third sub-circle of Violence: the violent against God. We observe nature twisting itself, as flaming snow falls upon unfruitful soil. We encounter Capaneus, who fights a never-ending battle against Jove in his heart. We discuss how Capaneus' quote, our Dante Daily, is key to an effective examination of conscience. We talk about how love in marriage is like love for God, and consider what it really means to destroy "nature."

In this episode we move into the second sub-circle of Violence, where we encounter the violent against self. We encounter Pier della Vigna, who eternally attempts to destroy his own soul by lowering it in the order of being. We discuss suicide in the pagan world, the medieval world, and the modern world. We note how the different ways that medieval and modern theologians each approach suicide by applying the same doctrine to two vastly different sets of circumstances. We also hear how opera's most famous clown is a little like the souls in this canto.

In this episode, we descend into the Circle of Violence. We encounter the Minotaur, the centaurs, and the souls of those who embrace violence against others. We discuss what it means to never repent, how these souls differ from the wrathful, and how we harm ourselves more than anyone else by our sins. We also learn how the ladies of the Broadway musical "Chicago" are just like the souls in this circle.

In Canto 8, we continue through the circle of wrath and approach the infernal city of Dis, which houses the remaining circles. We are astonished to see Dante, with Virgil's approval, rejoicing in the punishment of an enemy. We contrast three approaches towards Justice: medieval, modern, and heavenly.

In Canto 7 we descend into the circle of avarice, then down another level to wrath (and sloth)! We discuss how these apparently different vices do belong in the same Canto because they are different approach to conflict: conflict over something, conflict for its own sake, and conflict avoidance. We also see how we can become addicted to conflict even though it's so unpleasant.

In this episode we descend into the the third circle of Dante's Inferno, gluttony, where we learn that trying to feed your soul with only lesser, easily attainable goods leaves you cold--in this life, and the next. Cameron and Trisha discuss how being made for greatness calls us to more, and how we can find ourselves in a "numb" state from the demands of life, but that we can choose to be active participants in life again with some help.
