As artists, we are being abused by social media platforms' billionaire, bunker-dwelling owners who shape, control, and monetize our art while giving nothing back.I've had enough of it. You see it now, don’t you? How AI slop is filling up social media platforms and pushing out authentic or human generated content. How can artists survive and communicate with potential customers when Google won’t tell customers where we are? I’ve thought about this topic for a long time, decades really, and have no guaranteed answers that will work for you. But here is what I am trying to do, my strategy for tiptoeing around the platforms while connecting directly with the people who want to see my art. In spite of the website being declared dead because of Google Zero (no referral traffic), I will build a webpage for my content, just like we did in the early days of the Internet. This will be the place to find my art, my photography. Not on Instagram, not on tiktok, not YouTube, but rather on our top level domains tribemagazine.com and tribe.ca .I am not going to host videos on YouTube because I don’t want deodorant or bubble tea ads running in front of or interrupting my art. The American business, tech, and media press are saying that people who work with their hands will be fine in spite of the AI onslaught because AI can't do plumbing or sew quilts. But it's really about discovery and distribution. If Google is not providing search results anymore and is just providing "answers," the answers provided will soon be paid for by the highest bidder. Small artists, businesses, us - we won't stand a chance against the U.S. companies that will game the system to put you out of business, because none of us will get discovered, and so we will be unable to sell our art. Worse, AI will steal our art and ideas and present them as its own.I don't know the answer yet for artists, but we really must think about how we can penetrate the thick AI shell that will envelop everything, whose mission is to conceal our work from the public in order to monetize descriptions of it for tech company profits. After last week’s episode, I bought a groovebox, a music sampler, to start building original sound for my work, including the Preserve the Beat documentary on the birth of electronic music in Canada. I didn’t go for the trendy device, I chose the one that actually fits how I work.Here’s the problem: most people using samplers today are relying on pre-made sample packs pulled from unknown sources. It’s fine if you’re just messing around, but for commercial work, it’s a risk. A lot of those samples have unclear licensing, questionable origins, and are often resold copies of copies.And creatively? If you’re using the same sounds as everyone else, your music will sound like everyone else.There’s also a real danger here: you could spend months, or a year, building a track, only to find you can’t release it because of a single sample buried in the mix. Or worse, your track gets flagged or blocked by automated systems on platforms like YouTube just as it starts gaining traction.In this episode, I break down why creating your own samples is the smartest move you can make, and how to actually do it. Recording your own sounds gives you a clean ownership chain, total control, and something far more important: originality.Because at the end of the day, sound is a material. Greenland has some nice rubies and sapphires and they are some of the oldest in the world. The colors of the corundum mined there tend to be in the pink to red color spectrum due to the geology and how the crystals were formed. They would look great in jewelry I think, but that is not the only reason you should consider using them in a design.A Norwegian company set up a ruby mine in Greenland and has mined some nice stones for the jewelry trade. I'm going to document my experience seeking funding for a book of photography and for a documentary film. I am hoping it will help others who are seeking to fund art. It will be journalism, but also provide the steps I will take to secure or fail to secure funding for my projects. This first part of the series is about getting your thinking clear and straight about what you want to fund and why, before you even think about how much money you will need for your projects.It turns out the USA states bordering Canada have suffered a 40% drop in Canadian visitors. Canadian senior citizens now get fingerprinted daily by US border patrol agents at entry points, and visitors will be required to provide the US government 5 years of social media history to enter the country. Over 200 Canadians have been arrested, including children, and some sent to American internment camps. Canadians now realize we don't need to visit America for anything at all, and especially if we get treated like scum for trying to spend our money there. One of the greatest human experiences you can have is when you resonate with an artist's work, or it resonates with you on some almost unconscious level. Petr Válek's synthesizers are hand-built from found materials and embellished with designs coming from a very deep place in a rural area in the Czech Republic. They are also fun and comical. How can an art object contain such multitudes? Media Literacy 101. The American media pundits are coming into Canada to sell books and influence our politics. They are appearing on our state funded current affairs shows as "news” but this is not news, it is US marketing funded by Canadian tax dollars. The first part of this episode describes the hypocrisy of American media pundits who use marketing, disinformation or polarization to sell more books and podcast subscriptions to Canadians and Europeans, while capitalizing on their own country’s demise. Perhaps they should go back to where they came from and fix their own country before telling Canadians or Europeans how to live and what to do. My Mom taught me how to write a decent letter of complaint, so I wrote one to our Prime Minister, Mark Carney, who seems to have moved on from the impressive date-specific unaccomplished achievements he promised to Canadians just a few short months ago, in order to get elected. Artists can be prickly, but we are brave.
