Ep. 15: Acts 17 and The Enculturated Word, feat. Pax

In this week’s episode of Cast Your Nets, BigTuna is joined by creative design extraordinaire and friend of the podcast, Pax (formerly Pax Americana). The two discussed Acts 17, dwelling on the meaning of “turn the world upside down,” Paul’s announcement of a new phase of history, why the cultural contexts of Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens are necessary to understand the passage, why the Jews reacted in the ways they did to Paul’s message, why Paul’s spirit was provoked in Athens, why God has providentially set up the boundaries of nations, and what this all means for America, both historically and today. Ep. 14: 1 Kings 18 & God's Forbearance, feat. Grant Brooks

In today’s episode of Cast Your Nets, BigTuna is joined by the excellent Grant Brooks to discuss 1 Kings 18, involving Elijah’s confrontation with King Ahab and the prophets of Baal. Together, they examine how God’s character is revealed through the passage’s narrative (esp. his mercy), the Bible’s description of generational and/or national wickedness, Fire as a key thematic element in the Bible, how deep Israel’s betrayal of God actually was, why marriage can be used as an analogy of God and his People, why God has a People, and much more. Other passages taken from 1 & 2 Chronicles, Hebrews 12, 2 Kings, and others are used to bolster the arguments made. Tune in now!

Ep. 13: 1 Corinthians & The Purity of the Church

In the first Cast Your Nets episode of 2026, BigTuna returns to walk through the book of 1st Corinthians, examining why Paul casts particular sinners out of the Church, why evildoers must be purged from the midst of God’s assembly, the necessity of unity within the Church, the concepts of sin as virus and the wicked as leaven, why contemporary culture is not uniquely sexual, but uniquely vulgar; and why exile (or excommunication) are more biblical punishments than imprisonment. Scriptures like 1 Corinthians 5 & 6, Leviticus 18, Deuteronomy 22, Matthew 15, and others are consulted to inform the believer.

Ep. 12: The 10 Commandments & the Purpose of the Law, feat. Ron Dodson

In this episode of Cast Your Nets, BigTuna is once again joined by friend of the show, Ron Dodson, who previously appeared on Episode 4. Today, they discussed the Ten Commandments (using both the Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 versions), why they are addressed to a particular people in time, the Noahic Covenant & covenantal messaging more broadly, why the God of the Bible must be understood as personal, the instructive power of Law, Tabernacle, and Temple; how Acts models proper loyalty to God, the meaning of Righteousness, and understanding the Kingdom of Heaven as an eternal body that is outside of space & time (while still being deeply tied to particular languages, eras, cultures, and political contexts). Scriptures like Genesis 9 and Acts 15:12-21 are also used in bolstering the Biblical evidence for the case made. Ep. 11: The Christian Ethic "Judge Not" | A Tuna Talks Episode

In this solo episode of Cast Your Nets, BigTuna discusses the Christian Ethic of “Judge Not,” and in particular, how it is used to accuse Christians by nonbelievers, how its misappropriation nullifies God’s character and role, the importance of right judgment, how we ought to mimic God, what it means to play the role of a Prophet, and the centrality of Judgement to the overall Christian message. Scriptures like Matthew 7:1-5, Luke 6:37-42, John 7:14-24, Luke 12:57-59, and Ezekiel 3:16-21 are referenced to strengthen the listener’s biblical framework.

The two discussed Acts 12, Peter’s journey reflecting Passover, Herod and Pharaoh, what it means to be of God’s chosen nation, avoiding intermixing with the world, the modern nation-state of Israel, reading the Bible typologically, seeing God’s handiwork in history, and trusting in Providence. Ep. 8: Puppeteers of the Dead- A Tuna Talks Episode

In this short episode of Cast Your Nets, BigTuna goes solo to discuss bad Historiography: how it happens, how to avoid lazy smearing, how to better interpret History (without over-attributing importance to History), and why we shouldn’t live vicariously through battles of the past. Episode 8 also covers Karl Marx, Class history, Russia’s “Official Nationalism” (Orthodoxy, Autocracy, Nationality), what it means to be Right Wing, God’s apparent favoritism, and the question of prudence.

Ep. 7: Proverbs 3:5, feat. Thommy Come Lately

In the seventh episode of Cast Your Nets, BigTuna is joined by Thommy Come Lately, who is a Reformed poster on Twitter/X. This time around, both of them discussed Proverbs 3:5— what does it mean to trust in the Lord? Why is it contrasted with leaning on our own understanding? How do we avoid “idolatry of the mind?” How do we become better followers of God? And what blessings await us when we do trust in the Lord with all our hearts? The two discussed these questions and others, drawing on other passages of scripture like Isaiah 55:8-9, Romans 11:33, 1 Corinthians 1:25 & 2:13-16, as well as the rest of Proverbs 3. They also take time to discuss the utility of labels like Secular Humanism & Atheism, as well as an exploration of Nietzsche’s story of the big ear in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. IM-1776 spot: "Tariff Men"

Hello all. A little less than two weeks ago, I was published in IM—1776, which is an excellent online & print magazine that specializes in political, cultural, and artistic analysis. My article, Tariff Men, was a historical reminder of the role tariffs have played in America’s past (through the lens of two key American statesmen, Henry Clay and William McKinley), and how Donald Trump can use them to build a prosperous future. Please share, and enjoy!- your host, BigTuna (aka Recompense Stanborough)
