Euthanasia Drug: A heavy overdose of anesthetic is given to ensure a peaceful passing. The entire process typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes, with the pet passing within 5 to 10 minutes after sedation. Families can choose to be present during the procedure, and Dr. Knight encourages open communication with children about the process. She advises against using euphemisms like "putting to sleep" to avoid confusion and fear in children. Families are encouraged to decide in advance what to do with their pet's remains, including: Burial: At home or in a pet cemetery, considering local ordinances. Cremation: Traditional cremation or aquamation (a water-based process). Dr. Knight provides guidance on these options and can assist with transportation if needed. Many people believe pets should pass naturally at home, but Dr. Knight emphasizes that this is rare and often involves trauma. Tom and his wife, Angie, just celebrated their twelfth wedding anniversary in March. Angie is a Physical Education Teacher at Chapin High School who coaches club volleyball and hosts clinics. “We are proudly owned by two cats. Anyone with cats knows they must have both their proper names and a slew of nicknames. Ignacio (Piglet) and Jean-Luc Piccat (Tinky) graciously allow us to sleep in their bed, provided we feed them and show them sufficient affection. We are also in the process of fostering to adopt and grow our family. Soon, we will have a daughter.” Let’s face it: for a lot of people, getting photos taken or making a video isn’t a joy. Very often, being in front of a camera can make one self-conscious or apprehensive. Burke and Staci moved from Naples, FL  to attend Columbia Bible College, now known as Columbia International University. They both worked part time jobs while enrolled as full time college students.  Burke learned the art of window cleaning while working for a friend who graduated and left the country with his family as long term missionaries overseas. Together, Burke and Staci officially began Squeegee Clean Inc. as a way to fund their college expenses and living expenses. In the process, they discovered many like minded students who needed to pay off debts in order to go overseas. The business grew and Burke and Staci soon realized they needed help to meet their ever-growing client base so they hired their first employee, another student. God kept growing their client base and they kept needing to hire more employees. They worked together as a team, Burke did the physical labor and Staci did the administrative work. Many of their clients made known their desires for other services including pressure washing and soft washing. After due diligence of research and more education, they expanded their services, causing their customer base to double in size. God was at work in a different way than they had ever anticipated. The business soon took on a life of its own and Burke and Staci had to decide what to do about this baby that had grown into a child with so many overwhelming needs. Sometimes God calls people to go but sometimes he calls people to stay and help others go. And sometimes God calls you to be light right where you are planted. Burke and Staci attended Columbia Bible College to go overseas but on that day they realized God was already using them right where they were, helping others to go and growing them to build a Christ centered business, honoring God in all that they say and do while serving their customers and employees. Several past employees have gone on to become pastors, missionaries, counselors, teachers, authors and business owners to name a few. Many of our customers don’t know the love of Christ and have never experienced hiring honest people who actually care about doing a job well and who keep their word. Many of our team members have never had the opportunity to work for an employer who actually cares about their well being and the well being of their families. Burke graduated with a Bachelors in Bible and Masters in Counseling and Staci graduated with a Bachelors in Bible and Masters in Teaching. Even though they aren’t currently employed in those career fields, the education and training they received equipped them well to develop and run a successful business, centered on Christian values and principles. Running a growing business is not easy. God has grown their faith as they have had to cling to him for guidance and direction at so many junctures. Twenty years into Squeegee Clean, they are still learning and growing so much in so many ways every single day. They went from pen and paper invoices into the technology rabbit hole of software galore and social media overload, from only phone calls to emails and texting, from hiring front line employees to hiring department managers, from running a home office to running a permanent commercial business location. So much throughout the years has changed but their standards, their values and their principals have never waivered. Tyler Thigpen is a local celebrity, girl-dad, retired NFL player, and realtor with Signature Homes and Land. Listen to this podcast to get to know Tyler! DID YOU KNOW? Tyler was drafted out of Coastal Carolina University in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL Draft (217th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings. He was the first quarterback to play for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football team. He led the Chanticleers program to a 30–8 record as their starting quarterback. Thigpen holds the single-season and career passing records in most major statistical categories at Coastal Carolina. He saw his most extensive action as a starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. Thigpen recorded 22 touchdowns (18 passing, 3 rushing, and 1 receiving) against 12 interceptions in 11 starts, though the Chiefs were 1–10 in that span. Thigpen was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina, and he attended Fairfield Central High School, where he played on the football team. He became an All-South Carolina selection as a senior running back. In addition to running back, Thigpen played wide receiver and punter in high school. He grew up playing football in the Newberry County Youth Sports. Meet Maddie Shutts of Modern Companion! Modern Companion aims to bring the community of pet lovers together one stylish pet product at a time. We were created by owner Maddie St. Shutts, a crazy pet mom with a design background inspired to give pet accessories a whole new light. She was tired of pet accessories focusing on being too masculine or feminine. With two spotted dogs finding products that brought out their natural beauty and elegance was hard to come by. In 2019, Modern Companion was born. Maddie started to create modern products that had various natural tones that could work on every pet. She did this while working full-time as a UX designer and working on her MBA at the age of 23. In 2020, she started working with and commissioned small business illustrators to create one-of-a-kind patterns while hiring a small local team of seamstresses to continue to handcraft each accessory and started to offer their products in retail stores. In March 2021, she opened their first brick-and-mortar retail store at 508B Lexington Ave in Chapin, SC. Opening the retail store gave them a home to showcase their line of products to their local community. It also has allowed them to work with other fantastic pet entrepreneurs and small businesses. Every single product sold in our store is carefully curated, tested, and selected by Maddie and the Modern Companion team. Meet Alecia Klauk of Chapin We Care Center! Alecia Klauk is a well-known pillar in the community. Her work with the We Care Center blessed thousands of local residents. She most recently served as Benefits Coordinator for SC Thrive, where she assisted clients for agencies like We Care and other food pantries, medical clinics, and various ministries to gain access to various government benefits programs, including Social Security Disability, SNAP, Medicaid, Welvista, FAFSA, taxes and others, as clients work to reach greater financial security and independence. She has also worked for Family Connection of South Carolina and the South Carolina Department of Social Services’ Office of General Counsel. Chapin We Care is a Christian ministry that provides food and warmth to those in need in Chapin and the surrounding communities. The We Care Center was established in 1986, to work with families and individuals in our community who are facing emergencies trying to meet their basic living needs. With the support of affiliated churches, local businesses, civic organizations, and individuals, We Care coordinates resources to act as a single point of service for our clients whether they need food, gas for doctor’s appointments, kerosene, or help with utilities. Terri is actively involved in the community as a member of the Chapin Chamber of Commerce since 2013 and has served on the Board of Directors, also a member of the Superintendent Business Advisory committee for Lexington Richland 5 school district. She lives in the Timberlake Golf Course Community located on Lake Murray. Terri has previously served as PTO secretary, ROTC secretary, and children's church ministry. Meet Cassy Paschal, the principal at Piney Woods Elementary School. Cassy is honored to be serving as the principal of Piney Woods Elementary School (PWES). As the principal of the district’s newest elementary school, she is thrilled to have the opportunity to help create a learning environment for my future students that is nurturing, interactive and engaging.  She has over 30 yearss as a student and/or educator in the district. Before coming to PWES, she served as the principal of Irmo Middle School and Oak Pointe Elementary School. She started my career as a special education teacher at Wilson High School in Florence, SC then came to Irmo Middle to continue my career. She earned my bachelor’s degree from Presbyterian College and master’s degrees in public administration and educational administration from the University of South Carolina. When Cassy am not at school, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Johnny, and their three children: Chase, Keiser and Justus. All three of the children have either graduated from or currently attend school in School District Five. Meet Chapin's James Burns of the Eagle Club! James is an experienced litigator in the areas of consumer financial services litigation, FINRA broker-dealer litigation, and business litigation. A chief of staff to former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and a past chairman of the State Ethics Commission, James has counseled and represented clients in administrative law matters before state governmental bodies and in state attorney general investigations. James is a 24-year veteran of the United States Navy Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps, having served overseas in and at the Pentagon. James graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law, JD, cum laude (2002) and from the Citadel, BA, Political Science (1996). Meet Lexington-Richland School District Superintendent Dr. Akil Ross. “He flunked the third grade. Now he’s the best high school principal in the nation.” This was the headline from the local newspaper after he was announced the National Principal of the Year.  Dr. Akil Ross’ story is a testimony of the power a community has to transform a struggling student into a high performing student.  Akil grew up in Washington, DC during the height of a drug and crime wave that claimed the potential of many young people in his community.  In the midst of these conditions, transformational elements were made available that empowered him to maximize his potential. He credits his home, his elementary school and a recreational center for teaching him how to face adversity and overcome obstacles early in his life.  As a result of the high expectations set in his home, school and on the playing field, Akil was able to earn a full scholarship to Duke University. Upon graduation from Duke University, Akil moved to South Carolina, where he taught Social Studies for three years at Eau Claire High School in Columbia, SC. In 2005, he obtained his M.Ed. in Secondary Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina and joined Chapin High School as an assistant principal in July of 2005.  After 5 years as an assistant principal, he was named principal in July of 2010. In July of 2012, he earned doctorate degree in Curriculum Studies from the University of South Carolina. Chapin High School received many awards and recognitions under Akil’s leadership such the Palmetto’s Finest Award, Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Lighthouse Award, several national rankings in academics from Newsweek, Niche, Washington Post and US News & World Report. His school earned 20 State Championships in 8 Years (14 State Championships in Athletics, 4 State Championships in Marching Band and 2 NJROTC State Championship including 1 National Championship). As principal of Chapin High School, Dr. Ross was named the 2017 SC Secondary Principal of the Year and the 2018 NASSP National Principal of the Year. He has received numerous professional recognitions and accomplishments during his career including: the 2017 South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) Secondary Principal of the Year and the 2018 National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Principal of the Year. He was featured in The State Newspaper, 20 under 40, Class of 2017, Principal Leadership Magazine, The Rotarian Magazine and Columbia Business Monthly, 50 Most Influential, 2018. Dr. Ross was named the 2020 UofSC College of Education Adjunct Professor of the Year. In 2018, he left Chapin High School to serve as the Director of Secondary Education for the district. Meet William Lynch! William was born and raised in Sumter, SC, William began his career in funeral service in 2013. William attended Wilson Hall School growing up and graduated from Sumter Highschool in 2012. Following his graduation, he worked as a funeral assistant in the family owned and operated firm, Elmore-Cannon-Stephens, in his hometown. William moved to Columbia, SC in 2015 and worked as an apprentice funeral director and embalmer with Dunbar Funeral Home. He graduated from Piedmont Technical College with a degree in applied science in funeral services and became a licensed funeral director in early 2018. He joined the McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation team in January of 2023 to lead the opening of its new West Columbia Location in the Landmark 200 State St. Building with John David Thompson.William serves his community away from work as well. He is an active volunteer firefighter with Dutch Fork Fire and Rescue where he coordinates the annual Santa Claus run for the neighborhoods of Irmo/Chapin. William is a member of the United Methodist Church and is active with the Greater Cayce-West Columbia Chamber of Commerce. William is a former member of the Town of Chapin Planning Commission and is the public address announcer for the Chapin High School Football Team. William is very active in the State of South Carolina in veteran services. William has conducted numerous funerals for unclaimed and at-risk veterans and has worked tirelessly with the South Carolina Legislature to draft laws that protect veterans as the time of death in South Carolina. William is a recipient of the Jefferson Award, the State’s 2021 Top 20 under 40, The 2022 Lexington County Chronicle’s Top 20 under 40 and was named the Chapin Chamber of Commerce Young Professional of the Year in 2021. Currently he serves as the Incoming Board Chairman for the Chapin Chamber of Commerce and is active with the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association, where he previously served on the Executive Committee and as chairman of the Central Coastal Funeral Directors Group. William and his wife, Kelsey, a former kindergarten teacher, reside in Chapin with their three children. You can often find William and his family visiting their favorite places like Riverbanks Zoo and The State Museum. They also enjoy spending time on Lake Murray or traveling to Charleston to spend time with family and friends. William and his family see the funeral profession as his calling to serve every family with compassionate care during challenging times. They look forward to serving West Columbia and the surrounding areas of Richland, Lexington, and Calhoun counties for many years to come.
