The Darien Scheme was a late 17th century attempt by the Kingdom of Scotland to establish a colony on the Isthmus of Panama, near the Gulf of Darien. Conceived as a bold solution to Scotland's economic struggles, the scheme ultimately became a national disaster with far reaching consequences, incuding its influence on the 1707 Act of Union with England.
