Can Mayor Mike Claim a Win on Homelessness? Plus, Same-y Farmers Markets and McDonald's Fried Apple Pie

Did Denver really figure out how to solve homelessness? British news magazine The Economist recently touted Mayor Mike Johnston’s long-term initiative to get people into shelter, and the 64% drop in unsheltered homelessness since 2023 – but what did they miss? City Cast Denver regular Michelle Jackson joins host Bree Davies to discuss the mayor’s “all in” shelter plan. They also compare the latest homelessness work in Denver to Aurora’s new tiered shelter and Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman’s decision to sleep at a shelter one night a week since February. Plus, they debate the merits of McDonald’s throwback fried apple pie and talk about the state of vendor variety – or lack thereof – at local farmers markets. Since voting to unionize back in November of 2024, Casa Bonita performers have gone to the table 14 times to negotiate wages, security issues, and workplace safety protocols, but have yet to reach a compromise with CB’s billionaire owners Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Pink Palace actor, union member, and City Cast Denver regular Joshua Emerson sits down with host Bree Davies to take us inside the ongoing labor fight. What Cheap Parking Downtown Really Costs. Plus, Can BRT Be ‘Better’ on Colorado Boulevard?

Is the city’s new $5 downtown parking program worth it to Denverites? After Mayor Mike Johnston came on the show last week to talk up his grand new plan to get people downtown, our dear listeners had a lot of thoughts and feelings about it. Jill Locantore, executive director of the Denver Streets Partnership, took particular issue with Johnston’s approach to the topic of drinking and driving – she joins host Bree Davies to share her perspective on the mayor’s new parking plan and some big ideas to fix Denver’s problems with car storage. Jill and Bree also discuss the Glendale City Council’s “no build” vote on bus rapid transit on Colorado Boulevard, the state of the Denver Deserves Sidewalks initiative, and more. Bree mentioned Jill’s last appearance on the pod, when they discussed the idea of establishing parking benefits districts. Jill mentioned Families for Safe Streets’ recent recommendation for regulations on autonomous vehicles. Bree also talked about the ballot measure Denverites passed to create funding to fix, build, and replace sidewalks on a recent episode of Your City Could Be Better, City Cast’s national podcast! A Phone Call With Former Sen. Gary Hart on How Politics Changed Forever

Two years ago, City Cast Denver producer Paul Karolyi interviewed a bona fide Colorado legend – two-term former Senator Gary Hart. He was the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1987, but became notorious for how his campaign ended, with a shocking sex scandal. At the time of the call, Hart was 87, and City Cast Denver was working on our big Lauren Boebert project. Paul had questions only Hart could answer about how politics has become personal and the changing of the guard – themes that resonate from last week’s primaries. So, for the first time, we are sharing this interview about the warping effect of the media, Colorado’s political establishment, and the threat of nuclear war.  Paul mentions Matt Bai and his brilliant book about Gary Hart, which was adapted into a pretty good movie starring Hugh Jackman – “All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid” For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter at denver.citycast.fm. Inside Alma Fonda Fina: How Johnny and Kasie Curiel Are Beating the Odds As Many Restaurants Close

After racking up two Michelin stars and opening six restaurants in less than three years, Johnny and Kasie Curiel are the Denver restaurant industry’s biggest success story. So how, at a time when so many other restaurateurs are struggling, closing, or calling for minimum wage reform, did they pull this off? And how long can it last? Producer Paul Karolyi sits down with the married co-owners of Fonda Fina Hospitality to talk about how they met, how their company was inspired by a national restaurant chain, and why they “literally put their lives on the line to follow their dreams,” as their friend and fellow chef Michael Diaz de Leon put it to the Denver Post. Plus, their favorite local spots to try today! Paul referenced his interview with Chef Michael Diaz de Leon from back in March 2024, when he had just stepped away from the restaurant where he earned a Michelin star. Zombies Are Attacking Denver! Where Do You Go? Who Do You Team Up With?

It’s officially summer in the Mile High City, and for many Denverites that means it’s time to high-tail it to the nearest shady spot on the bank of a mountain creek. But what if instead of escaping our day-to-day lives, we Denverites were escaping a horde of bloodthirsty zombies? Would that shady spot offer good defenses? Provisions? And what about the long-term chances for survival? Denver Business Journal reporter Catie Cheshire joined producers Paul Karolyi and Olivia Jewell Love last year to swap notes and talk through our survival strategies for a zombie apocalypse in Denver.  This episode first aired on Aug. 6, 2025. We discuss Catie’s report on Coors Field for Westword as the inspiration for this episode, and Paul mentioned Catie’s excellent recent report on the business leaders asking whether now is the time to demolish office buildings downtown. Olivia talked about Ark Tactical in Lakewood. Paul discussed nuclear missile silos.  Who brought the best survival plan — Catie, Olivia or Paul? Also, we want to know who you’d team up with. Denver State Senate Candidates Beef over Dark Money, Data Centers, and RTD's Budget

While there’s been plenty of coverage of the gubernatorial, congressional, and U.S. Senate primaries, smaller but equally important battles are also being fought in Denver – like the race to represent Colorado Senate District 34 (a seat currently held by Julie Gonzales). Two Democrats are vying to represent the downtown and northwest Denver district: Andrés Carrera and Chela Garcia Irlando. They engaged in a heated forum last week on stage at Su Teatro, with our producer Paul Karolyi moderating. With the primary election just eight days away, we’re sharing this live recording of Carrera and Garcia Irlando, who fiercely debated everything from data centers and the city’s handling of the migrant crisis to RTD’s budget issues and the role of dark money in this very race. A quick clarification on the “dark money” exchange: After the forum, Conservation Colorado Victory Fund reached out to let us know that they had reported spending on the mailers Paul mentioned, but that the secretary of state’s office had not yet updated its database at the time of the forum. For more, the Colorado Sun reported last Thursday a breakdown of all the spending from groups that don’t disclose their donors in support of candidates in state legislature races, including SD34.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter at denver.citycast.fm. Over the course of two years, she visited all 511 parks in the county, seeking to record their amenities (e.g., bathrooms, playgrounds), write helpful summaries, and track down the people in charge. The resulting map has already become a valuable tool for locals, who now not only know who to call when trash cans are overflowing: they can also find outdoor spaces that meet their needs. Where Denver Falls in the Harm Reduction Conversation

When it comes to numbers, the story of drug-related overdose deaths in America is simple. They increased slowly and steadily through the early Trump years until a big jump during the pandemic. But that’s where Colorado is diverging. The Denver Post recently reported on preliminary numbers from the CDPHE that show overdose deaths increasing here in 2025, when most of the rest of the country was declining. 'Your City Could Be Better': How Las Vegas Saves More Water Than Any Other City — Presented By City Cast Denver

Denver recycles some of its water, but not as much as Las Vegas, where the water there stays in the city. How else could a desert city possibly have enough water for its year-round tourists, a metro area population of over 2 million, and all those pools? The process just might be grosser than you think. With innovative recycling, strict lawn rules, and infrastructure to monitor it all, Vegas has become a global leader in water reuse. City Cast CEO David Plotz talks with City Cast Las Vegas podcast host Jesse Merrick to learn how the city makes do with what it has and how its practices could save other cities’ water supplies. Is Good Food Enough for a Denver Restaurant to Thrive?

Between Michelin stars and James Beard Awards, it’s safe to say that Denver has secured its place in the food world. But, a lot more goes into making a 5-star restaurant than just awesome food. We are revisiting a conversation from earlier this year where host Bree Davies chats with Kevin Nguyen, the award winning architect behind some of Denver’s most celebrated restaurants, like Brutø, The Wolf's Tailor, Hey Kiddo, Hop Alley, Xiquita, and more. The two parse out what else can really make, or break, an elite restaurant experience. Paul mentioned our cool new shopping guide newsletter Keep it Local – make sure you’re subscribed to get it in your inbox every Thursday afternoon! A big thanks as well to Keep it Local’s sponsors, the Denver Economic Development & Opportunity office and the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. City government reporter Elliott Wenzler joins producers Paul Karolyi and Olivia Jewell Love to talk about the settlement reached after Denver Police shot at and arrested the wrong people they thought they found via HALO cam. AI Talks End in ‘Near-Total Rewrite,’ Trump vs. Denver’s Assault Weapons Ban, and New Scooter Problems

The 2026 Colorado legislative session is in its final week, so we’re looking into the hot-button issue of AI, which continues to divide Democrats. Westword editor-in-chief Patty Calhoun joins host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi to talk about how Colorado’s’ “first in the nation” regulations, passed in 2024, ended up with a “near-total rewrite” this year, according to the Denver Post. Plus, the Trump administration is coming after Denver again – this time with a lawsuit aimed at overturning the city’s ban on assault weapons – so we’re talking about where this attack ranks among all the other times Trump has turned his attention toward the Mile High City. And finally, a listener calls in to talk about their first impressions of Veo scooters. For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter at denver.citycast.fm. After the Bandstand Fire, the Key to City Park’s Future Lies in the Past

After City Park’s iconic bandstand was damaged beyond repair in an overnight fire in late March, the park’s neighbors and city leaders have come together to raise money for a replacement. While alternate locations are in place for big events like City Park Jazz this summer, the fire and the outpouring of love sparked new questions about the history and what’s next for the park itself. So today, host Bree Davies is taking a walk through City Park’s past, present, and future with Georgia Garnsey, president of City Park Friends and Neighbors, and Kristina Maldonado Bad Hand, a Sicangu Lakota and Cherokee artist who is working on the new City Park Living Land project.
