LFG Game Planning Tips - Prepare for the Picture - Derron Gatewood, Jacob Craig, Sean Saturnio

In this episode of LFG Game Planning Tips, three coaches share practical ways to prepare players for what comes next on offense, defense, and special teams. Derron Gatewood, Senior Offensive Line Analyst at Texas, breaks down the Longhorns’ offensive line pull circuit. Gatewood explains how Texas trains trap pulls, skip pulls, perimeter pulls, and play-action pulls while emphasizing physicality, same-foot/same-shoulder contact, and the ability to react to different defensive responses. The circuit gives offensive linemen repeated opportunities to recognize power squeeze, spill, and mesh-charge reactions while maintaining their technique. On defense, Jacob Craig, Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach at St. Francis, explains their 4LOCO pressure coverage. As a high-pressure defense that traditionally relied heavily on one-high fire-zone structures, St. Francis needed another way to attack protections without continually presenting the same picture. Craig details their two-under, four-deep structure, how it allows them to pressure from a two-high shell, and how route distribution can transform the coverage after the snap. Finally, Sean Saturnio, Special Teams Coordinator at Army, shares how the Black Knights structure their special teams meetings to prepare players mentally as well as physically. Through “Daily Seasoning,” intentional meeting openers, and energetic closers, Saturnio creates an environment designed to engage players, reinforce leadership lessons, and get them ready to learn after demanding days at West Point.Sean Saturnio- Creating a "Get To!" LFG Game Planning Tips - Situations That Decide Games - Cris Reisert, Phil Kleckler, Todd Goebbel

Winning close games often comes down to situations you can prepare for long before they happen. In this episode of Game Planning Tips from Lauren’s First and Goal, three coaches share how they prepare their teams for critical moments on offense, defense, and special teams. Chris Reisert, Offensive Coordinator at the University of Toledo, breaks down four-minute offense and the decisions that go into finishing a game with the ball. He discusses ball security, managing risk, communicating whether a ball carrier should score or get down, controlling the clock, and preparing answers for the pressure looks defenses will bring late in the game. Phil Kleckler, Head Coach at Lindsey Wilson University, explains the development of the Rabbit Package, a third-down defensive system designed to give players familiarity while allowing the staff to customize the plan each week. Kleckler shares how Lindsey Wilson uses personnel, coverage, line games, and simple terminology to attack specific protections without rebuilding the third-down defense every week.Todd Goebbel, Running Backs Coach and Special Teams Coordinator at NC State, details how his special teams fundamental circuit prepares every player for squib kicks, sky kicks, onsides, and sideline decisions. His approach emphasizes feet, eyes, hands, ball security, and coaching the uncommon situations before they become game-changing moments. The common thread across all three phases: if a situation can decide the game, it deserves to be part of the game plan. Mushroom Society - Help Your Protection - Terry Heffernan, Offensive Coordinator, Stanford

In this in-season quick hitter, Stanford offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Terry Heffernan shares a question every offensive line coach and offensive coordinator should be asking: How are you helping your protection? Heffernan explains why offenses should have answers built before they face an elite pass rusher on game week. Rather than leaving tackles isolated in critical passing situations, he details ways coaches can use formations, tight end alignments, chips, nudges, running backs, and receivers to reduce space and give offensive linemen an advantage. He also emphasizes the importance of developing the terminology and practicing these tools before they become an emergency. If a difficult edge rusher is on the schedule, the solution should already be part of the offense rather than something installed for the first time on Wednesday. Topics include: Using tight end alignment to tighten a defensive end’s alignment Building chip and nudge terminology into the offense The difference between tight end and running back help Helping tackles without adding another full-time protector Using skill players to improve five- and six-man protections Practicing protection answers before game week Creating a plan for elite pass rushers before you need it Watch the video version on Spotify to see the examples Coach Heffernan uses throughout the presentation. LFG Game Planning Tips - Deliberate Preparation, Communication & Retention - Jarryd Baines, Shea Campbell, Justin Lustig

In memory of Lauren Loose, February 15, 1997 - August 12, 2026 Season 2 of LFG Game Planning Tips opens with a look at how coaches can turn a game plan into something players can recognize, communicate, and execute under pressure. Jarryd Baines, offensive coordinator of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, explains why preparation has to be deliberate. From coaching quarterback footwork and reads during walkthroughs to scripting early opportunities for completions, building protection answers, and using self-scout to anticipate how defenses may attack, Baines shows how details throughout the week help quarterbacks play with rhythm on game day.Shea Campbell, defensive coordinator at Benedict College, shares how his staff builds communication into every part of preparation. Campbell explains why players must communicate in the meeting room, why the entire defensive staff needs to speak the same language, and how high-pressure practice situations can prepare a defense to execute when critical situations arise on Saturday. Penn State special teams coordinator Justin Lustig closes the episode with his approach to retention and deliberate practice. Lustig explains how quizzes create accountability at the end of meetings and why simply accumulating repetitions is not enough. Players and coaches have to understand why they are practicing something, correct mistakes, reinforce successful execution, and approach every drill with intention. In this episode: Making walkthroughs a deliberate part of quarterback development Building rhythm into the offensive game plan Using protection plans and self-scout to anticipate defensive answers Developing communication before players reach the field Creating pressure during the practice week Establishing one common language across a defensive staff Testing player retention in the meeting room Turning repetition into deliberate practice Find more coaching presentations, clinic bundles, and football resources at LFGClinic.com. Mushroom Society - Dante Scarnecchia on Becoming a Better Game-Day Coach

Game day is the final exam, but even the best preparation cannot account for everything a coach will see once the ball is kicked off. In this episode, we share a segment from legendary offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia’s presentation at the 2024 C.O.O.L. Clinic. Dante starts by looking back at his first year on the sideline and how much he still had to learn despite knowing the offense. Nearly five decades later, his perspective is simple: becoming a better game-day coach comes from experience, preparation, observation, communication, and learning how to solve problems as they appear. Dante explains why game day is different from every other part of the week and why coaches must be ready for the unexpected. Injuries change personnel plans. Matchups may look different than they did on film. Weather and field conditions can alter what an offense is capable of doing. Crowd noise can change communication and require answers such as the silent count. He then gets to the heart of the position coach's responsibility on the sideline: identify problems and provide solutions. That means seeing what changed from the plan, gathering information from players, communicating with the coordinator, watching the right things on every snap, and using the time between series to make players better before they take the field again. In this episode: What Dante learned from his first years coaching on the sideline Why game day is the final exam of the preparation week Preparing for the unexpected once the game begins Adjusting to injuries and changing personnel matchups Handling weather, field conditions, crowd noise, and silent count Why a position coach must identify problems and provide solutions What an offensive line coach should be watching during the game Using feedback from players to uncover what the defense is doing Making the time between series productive This segment is only a small piece of Dante's complete C.O.O.L. Clinic presentation. Inside The Mushroom Society, offensive line coaches can access the full presentation along with drills, techniques, coaching points, preparation ideas, and wisdom from some of the best offensive line coaches to have coached the game. One Play at a Time - The Virtual Film Room

Camp gave us time. School takes it back. Once our players are sitting through a full class day before they ever get to us, the old model — get everybody in one room and watch tape together — runs straight into lifting, practice, shared facilities, and kids who still need dinner, homework, and sleep. This episode is how we rebuilt the film room instead of cutting it: recording my own practice-tape review, coaching it exactly like players are in the room, and dropping it into Just Play so a kid can watch it on his own time, at his own pace, and prove he actually processed it — not just pressed play. It's also the most research-heavy episode of the series so far: video feedback, learner-controlled pacing, retrieval, self-explanation, and formative assessment all show up here, each one checked against real, checkable studies. In this episode: Why school starting is the actual problem this episode solves — not technology for its own sake How I turned time I was already spending (reviewing practice tape alone) into a recorded film session, using Hudl's screen recorder feeding straight into Just Play The advantage nobody plans for: a kid can rewind his own coaching point three times without stopping the whole room — and the research on why learner-controlled pacing actually helps (195-medical-student pause study; a second study on guided pause-and-rewind use beating unguided control) The "second step" story: how hearing myself repeat the same O-line correction on tape became a signal for what tomorrow's practice actually needs Our current filming setup — an iPad behind the offense, run by a JV player or an injured kid — and why that end-zone angle matters, plus the drone certification still in progress The 2024 youth-football study (Journal of Athletic Training) on combined video-and-coaching feedback improving tackling technique — and an honest note on why that study's players are younger than ours, but the mechanism still applies Why every film review ends in a quiz, and why the open-ended reflection question ("explain the key coaching points... in your own words") is doing more work than the position-specific one The self-explanation effect and the research on retrieval practice — why explaining a coaching point back beats simply re-watching it The one question that might matter most: "What do you still need clarification on?" — and why that's formative assessment, not just a suggestion box Where AI actually fits: processing my film-review transcript and 44 players' worth of answers faster — explicitly not the source of the learning, just the speed The standard for any new tool: if it doesn't help us teach better or work more efficiently, we probably don't need it Quotable: "We didn't cut the film room. We moved it." "Completion isn't enough. A checkmark tells me a player pressed play. It doesn't tell me he processed a single thing he saw." "He sees the rep, and he hears the correction in the same breath." "Second step. Second step. Second step. That's useful for the player. It's just as useful for me." "If a piece of technology doesn't help you teach better or work more efficiently, you probably don't need it." The Art of Practice - Does Your Practice Feel Like a Game? - Dan Friend, OL Coach, Morris Community HS (IL)

On this episode of The Art of Practice, presented by GoRout, Keith Grabowski is joined by Dan Friend, offensive line coach at Morris Community High School and a member of the GoRout team, to discuss how coaches can create practices that better prepare players for the speed and demands of game day. The conversation starts with a problem every staff faces: limited practice time. When coaches are spending reps getting scout players aligned, managing cards, correcting substitutions, or waiting for the next look, practice loses its flow. Friend explains why those delays don't just cost reps. They can also take away the urgency and focus coaches are trying to create. Friend and Grabowski discuss ways to make scout-team work more valuable by connecting opponent concepts to terminology and techniques players already understand. Instead of asking developmental players to simply follow lines on a card, coaches can use those reps to continue teaching and preparing younger players for future roles. They also break down how Morris structures the practice week, including using Tuesday to challenge the offense with difficult looks, Wednesday to clean up problems, and Thursday to build confidence through a crisp, uninterrupted game-like rehearsal. The goal isn't simply to practice faster. It's to create an environment where players communicate, process, and execute at a pace that prepares them for Friday night. Topics include: Creating game-like tempo without sacrificing teaching Why practice flow and urgency matter Getting more value from scout-team reps Using opponent looks to develop younger players Preparing for pressures and difficult situations Why the hardest practice reps should happen earlier in the week Building confidence with a game-like Thursday practice Keeping coaches focused on coaching instead of practice logistics Using GoRout to communicate scout looks and maximize practice time Learn more about how GoRout can help your staff make practice more efficient, effective, and game-like at GoRout.com/podcast Get 50% off set-up fees. One Play at a Time - Building Players Who Can Adapt

On this episode of One Play at a Time, presented by Just Play, we look at what happens when teaching moves beyond completion and starts creating real understanding. After realizing that a checkmark did not always mean a player truly understood the offense, we changed how we used quizzes and reflection inside Just Play. Players were asked not only what they studied, but what they learned, where they still needed help, and how well they could apply the material. That approach was put to the test when two key seniors were held out of a scrimmage and younger players were forced into expanded roles. Six sophomores, a freshman, and a reshuffled offensive unit stepped in and executed the same core system without the offense having to be rebuilt around them. The episode explores how concept-based teaching, cross-training, reflection, and varied practice can help players retain information, transfer learning to new situations, and create functional depth on a smaller roster. We also look at how Just Play makes that process practical for a coaching staff by keeping the install, quizzes, player feedback, positional teaching, and learning data organized in one place. Topics include: Why completion does not always equal understanding Using reflection questions to improve how players study Identifying what players still need help learning Teaching concepts instead of isolated assignments Cross-training players across multiple positions Helping younger players step into meaningful roles Building functional depth on a smaller roster Why varied practice improves transfer to game situations How Just Play makes the entire learning process more efficient for coaches and players The goal is not simply to give players access to information. It is to build players who can learn it, own it, and apply it when the situation changes. One Play at a Time is presented by Just Play on the Coach and Coordinator Network. Seattle Seahawks Thomas Hammock: Coaching, Family, Leadership, and Building Men

Originally recorded in 2020, this conversation from the Home Team Podcast features Joel Nellis with Thomas Hammock, who was then the head coach at Northern Illinois. Today, Hammock is back in the NFL as the running backs coach for the Seattle Seahawks and has drawn national attention following his appearance on the first episode of the 2026 season of Hard Knocks. His rise back into the spotlight comes after one of the defining moments of his tenure at NIU. In September 2024, Hammock led the Huskies into South Bend and defeated No. 5 Notre Dame, 16-14. Notre Dame would respond by winning 13 straight games and advancing all the way to the National Championship. But this conversation goes well beyond wins and losses. Hammock talks with Nellis about the responsibility coaches carry as husbands, fathers, leaders, and mentors. He explains why coaching decisions have to be family decisions, how he works to create an environment where assistants want to come to work, and why relationships with players have to extend beyond what they can provide on the football field. He also discusses building a football system capable of handling unexpected looks, avoiding wasted preparation time by “chasing ghosts,” and giving players enough tools to find answers when opponents adjust. Throughout the conversation, Hammock continually returns to the importance of relationships. He explains why family dinners remained part of the NIU routine regardless of whether the Huskies won or lost and why players and coaches need to know that family is genuinely valued within the program. In the closing moments, Hammock shares the larger purpose behind his career in coaching: developing men of character, discipline, and accountability and using the profession as an opportunity to change the direction of young people's lives. In This Episode: Making coaching career moves as a family Being fully present with your family when you're home Creating a staff culture where coaches want to work Why family dinners continue win, lose, or draw Building relationships with players beyond football Avoiding “chasing ghosts” in game planning Building systems that can handle unexpected adjustments Keeping players connected and engaged Developing men of character, discipline, and accountability The opportunity coaches have to change people's lives Featured Coach: Thomas HammockHost: Joel NellisOriginally Recorded: 2020 Story of the Season's Recruiting Profiles - Give your players better college exposure with Story of the Season's new web-based recruiting profiles. One Play at a Time - The Syllabus, Not the Manual

Episode 1 was the why. This one is the how. I walk through the actual nine-practice install calendar we built for Bay this preseason — the general information page that acts as the front door to everything, the color-coded system that tells a player what he's about to click before he clicks it, and why our quizzes are built by position group instead of one-size-fits-all. With twenty-two varsity and twenty-two JV players, a lot of our guys are learning more than one job, and this episode shows exactly how we built a system that could keep up with that. (Note: we walk through structure and categories here, not our actual terminology — we're installing a new offense this year and we'd rather our opponents learn it on Friday nights.) In this episode: The number that surprised our players: 60–90 minutes of homework before Practice One even starts The flight-school syllabus, continued from Episode 1's simulator analogy — and where the "checkride" fits Why 44 players with more than 44 jobs made "one place to organize everything" a survival issue, not a preference The Lego analogy: how concept-based teaching turns 7 varsity linemen (and 7 more on JV) into interchangeable parts at guard, tackle, and center — and does the same for hybrid skill players A full walkthrough of our General Information page and the blue/red/green color-coding system Why this couldn't be a Google Doc: what a football-built platform does that a shared drive can't Practice One, broken down: why day one is our heaviest install day, and why it's about vocabulary, not plays How the install calendar gets lighter, then heavier, then lighter again across Practices 2–5 Why our quizzes are split by role — All Players, Skill, O-Line, Running Backs, TE/Hybrids — and what "no quiz, no reps" actually means in practice Why "flipped learning" research is more humbling than the buzzword suggests — and why most attempts at it fail on execution, not concept (114-study meta-analysis, University of Utrecht, 2019; controlled study, Johnson & Wales University, 2013) How our own meetings changed: from a passive, read-the-binder model to 15–20 minutes of interactive application, then a 30-minute walkthrough on the field before practice — and why that's what separates a flip that works from one that doesn't The pivot after Scrimmage 1: why Practices 6–9 stop installing plays and start installing situational football 25 vs. 13: why a two-way HS roster gets barely half the practice reps a college team does before its first game — and why that makes a teaching platform a necessity, not a luxury What we're taking into Scrimmage 2 and the start of the season Quotable: "A few basic Lego shapes can build a race car or a spaceship. The player becomes interchangeable because the teaching was never built around the position label." "Google can host a document. It can't tag a quiz to a position group, gate a rep behind it, or tell me who actually watched the video." "Just Play is the first tool I've used in this game where I wasn't the one doing the stitching anymore." "If you haven't retrieved it, you don't get the rep." "The first scrimmage isn't the final exam on this install. It's the checkride." "That's still a manual. It just has a play button on it now." One Play at a Time - Teaching the Modern Player

I came back to coaching after a decade away and walked straight into the same problem I left: a playbook full of good information that players weren't retaining. This episode is the "why" behind everything that follows in this series — the research on how today's players actually learn, the three-tier video framework (Foundation, Reminder, Connection) we built around it with Just Play, and why NFL teams are now paying people whose only job is to make coaches better teachers. If you coach, and you've ever handed a kid two hundred pages and hoped it stuck, this one's for you. In this episode: The binder, the $20 bill, and what neither one ever taught our players Why coming back to coaching in 2026 felt like starting over The owner's-manual problem — and why install meetings still work that way What the research says about how Gen Z players actually learn (Thomas Kane's "learning recession," the 59% YouTube stat) Why the NFL now employs instructional designers — and what that says about the rest of us The 7-on-7 moment that exposed the gap between knowing a play and understanding it The three-tier framework: Foundation, Reminder, Connection — and the learning science behind each one The analogy that ties it all together: the flight manual vs. the flight simulator Why we explain the "why" to our players, not just the "what" Quotable: "We stopped asking players to adapt to our teaching, and started adapting our teaching to the player." "The playbook was never wrong. It was incomplete." "They knew the play. They didn't understand the play." The Passing Lab: Half-Field or Full-Field? Why the Answer May Be Both - Pete DeWeese, OC, Cambridge HS (GA)

Should your passing game be built around half-field reads or full-field progression concepts? It's a debate offensive coaches have had for years. Instead, they combine split-field concepts with scan tags to create quarterbacks who can process changing defensive pictures without slowing down. Pete explains: The strengths and weaknesses of half-field concepts Why quarterbacks struggle when the picture changes after the snap How scan tags create full-field answers without overwhelming your quarterback Why teaching matters more than simply collecting concepts This clip is just one lesson from The Passing Lab, where five high school offensive coordinators break down the systems they use to build efficient, explosive passing games. The Two Faces of Self Scout - Andrew Coverdale, Passing Game Coordinator, Kentucky

What if one of your best plays was hiding in your own data? In this episode, Andrew Coverdale shares a powerful section from his Move the Chains: Situational Offense keynote on the real purpose of self-scouting. For offensive coaches, self-scout is not just about finding tendencies. It is about discovering who you actually are, what is truly working, and how your opponents are preparing to defend you. Coverdale explains why coaches often misjudge their own offense, how emotions and big-game memories can create bias, and why objective information matters in the game-planning process. He also shares the story of discovering after the season that one of his most explosive concepts had been called only 17 times. This episode gives coaches a practical way to think about self-scout, offensive identity, tendency breakers, carry-forward ideas, and the pictures your offense presents to a defense. In This Episode Why self-scout has two different purposes Knowing who you actually are as an offense How a great concept can get underused Why practice impressions can mislead play callers Using data to challenge emotional bias Building offensive categories for better evaluation Carrying forward unused ideas from week to week Understanding how defenses see your offense Identifying high-efficiency and explosive pictures Finding tendency tells in formations, motions, alignments, and personnel How AI can help answer better game-planning questions Creating new presentations for your best offensive answers Featured Resource: Move the Chains This episode comes from Andrew Coverdale’s keynote presentation inside Move the Chains: Situational Offense.
