Alongside Kadria Hussein, Mohammed Khair, and his wife Meike (Micah) Ziervogel, he co-founded the Alsama Project — meaning "the sky" in Arabic.The journey that led to Alsama began, as Richard describes it, with a "simultaneous midlife crisis." Meike had written five novels and was running a publishing company in North London; Richard was spending his time in company headquarters, airports, and hotels. What was missing from their outwardly privileged lives was a palpable feeling of social impact. So, when their children left for university, they went to Lebanon. There, Richard did, in his words, "one brilliant thing": he introduced cricket to the teenagers of Shatila refugee camp, simply because he spoke no Arabic and needed a way to connect.As a non-contact sport where boys and girls can train and compete together, cricket became what Richard calls "a crash course in coping with success and failure" — and critically, a vehicle for girls' leadership in a context where 41% face early marriage.As Head of Strategy and Development, Richard has helped grow Alsama from a small empowerment centre into an award-winning NGO. They now operate four WASC-accredited education centres serving over 1,000 students - 66% of whom are girls - alongside 22 cricket hubs reaching 900 players across Lebanon. In February 2025, they launched their first international education centre in Syria.The model is remarkable: 90% of students arrive completely illiterate, yet Alsama prepares them for university in six years rather than twelve. The project has prevented early marriage for 256 girls - 99% of cases. And in 2026, they will launch the G12++, a first-of-its-kind, curriculum-agnostic high school equivalent certification designed for and by refugees and displaced youth, co-developed with Cambridge Assessment, Oxford MeasurED, the University of Leicester, and Alsama's own students.What speaks most to Alsama's character: during the 2024 war in Lebanon, they were the only educational provider that did not miss a single day of school.Their work has been recognised with the 2024 Library of Congress Literacy Award and the 2025 Ockenden Prize for advancing the self-reliance of refugees.---WHY? A born Londoner and Windrush generation descendant, Chris grew up in a few places — from London to Reading, to Texas and Toronto. His diverse upbringing has given him a million and a half tales to tell, but it's also inspired a passion for social justice and challenging the status quo. He's currently the Secretary of the Cambridge Union and is running for President for the second time, having previously served as Equalities Officer before his first presidential campaign. He was born and raised in Bedfordshire where he attended a state comprehensive school and was one of two pupils in his year to get into Oxbridge. Despite an early interest in STEM Jack found himself unable to shake his fascination with 20th century history and politics, however many of his close friends would contend that his greatest love is the Eurovision Song Contest. Educated at Cambridge where he graduated with a First in Natural Sciences, he joined McKinsey & Co for 7 years, enjoying accelerated promotion. He left in 2000 to pursue a career in education and authored the Education Strategy for Tony Blair. Following this, he returned to strategy consulting in Education, joining the Parthenon Group and building the largest European Education strategy practice in Europe. Episode 99 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Isaac Chan is a first-year music student at Clare College of Cambridge University. He is currently principal horn of the Cambridge University Orchestra, and is a designated conducting scholar for 2024-25 conducting the symphony orchestra and wind orchestra of Cambridge. Originally from Hong Kong, he started playing the horn at age 7, developing an interest in conducting through ample experience playing in orchestras. A recent graduate from Chetham’s School of Music sixth form, he founded and conducted a student group Chetham’s Camerata, and gave his operatic debut of Hansel and Gretel at age 16 among other ambitious projects. He has conducted orchestras such as the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra, the Berlin Sinfonietta, and has collaborated with various music societies at Cambridge; at venues such as the Bridgewater Hall (Manchester), Ely Cathedral, and the Foundation William Walton on the beautiful island of Ischia。 Isaac is particularly enthusiastic about opera conducting, having recently directed a re-conception of The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, as well as a premiere at the University Opera Society. As of 2024 he looks forwards to debuting with the Hong Kong Youth Philharmonia, Hertfordshire Opera and others, in an array of projects of stellar magnitudes. He currently studies horn and conducting with teachers at the Royal Academy of Music. He has worked with and been mentored by conductors such as Grant Llewellyn, Colin Metters, Timothy Redmond, and Sian Edwards. To enrich his experience as a conductor, Isaac started playing collaborative piano three years ago, and is now a frequently sought after accompanist for any sort of repertoire. Outside of music, Isaac enjoys reading and investigating anything related to literature and arts, with a particular interest in Chinese calligraphy. Born in a business family, he developed an interest in the economic and business world through books and everyday chats with his family. Curious about the world, he went on to explore his interests in areas including science, robotics, football, and history. He joined the youth team of Hong Kong Premier League Club Kitchee during middle school and thought about playing professionally until he got interested in the mathematical world. Going further down the road of competitive mathematics, he faced one of the most major setback in his educational journey, but eventually managed to overcome it and successfully made it into the Hong Kong Team Reserve for the International Mathematics Olympiad in the subsequent year. Episode 95 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Simon Staal recently completed his studies in computer engineering at Imperial College London, one of the best technical universities in the world. As somehow who has always been competitive in the classroom, Simon has an extensive history of prizes attained over his academic journey, recently culminating into being awarded the Siemens Memorial Medal for graduating with the top score in his department. Having lived in 10 countries across 4 continents, Simon has a culturally diverse background, and has helped him gain a strong sense of gratitude for the opportunities he's been given. This has fueled his strong urge to help others, reflected in many years of mentoring and extensive involvement in student representation, for which he was awarded the Electrical Engineering department's Denis Gabour prize for outstanding contributions to student life. On a more personal level, Simon has recently reignited his passion in climbing in the form of indoor bouldering (the most stereotypical software engineer hobby in existence), and enjoys spending his remaining free time hanging out with friends and loved ones, keeping fit, or diving into one of the many games on his list which have accumulated over the busy course of his degree. Beyond her studies, Lexi is a member of the Blues basketball team and enjoys woodworking, hiking, and playing guitar and Nintendo. Before Cambridge, Lexi graduated with honours from Vassar College. Episode 90 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Annie Chown is an up and coming global pop star... just kidding! Annie is going into her third year studying music at St Catharine's College and is a choral scholar, having recently toured Rome with the college choir, as well as enjoying writing more acoustic indie folk songs that she performs at chilled college open mics that she helps to run with the college's music society. As well as being a multi-instrumentalist (the piano diplomas and 2 grade eight distinctions speak for themselves) she is striving to become a music producer and composer after graduating, writing tracks in a range of styles, a few of which can be found on her Spotify and Soundcloud pages. Episode 88 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Andre Pancholi is a second-year Geography student at Homerton College, University of Cambridge. His primary interests centre around sustainability, politics, ecology, identity, developmental economics and climate change. Motivated by his desire to see a non-environmentally destructive developmental trajectory for the Earth within our lifetime, he has been a part of several grass-roots environmental initiatives, including a community-wide beach clean while volunteering in Ghana, as well as a school-wide tree planting day in his local borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. He has also written several articles on how social media and the internet can empower individuals to drive global social justice movements across the world, with one of these articles winning the prestigious John Locke Essay Prize for Politics and a scholarship of £2,000 (alongside publication in an academic journal). Keen to put his ideas into action, after finishing school he decided to take a gap year, spending almost 6 months living abroad working as a voluntary teacher in Ghana and Nepal. There, he gained insight into the developmental challenges (and successes) of rural communities in the developing world. Having been brought up by first generation Chinese immigrants, he has navigated growing up in two different worlds, one at home and one being at a British highly selective independent school. His father and mother both had very few opportunities growing up (although this didn’t stop his father from getting a masters degree in engineering!) having grown up in mainland China during the Mao era, and were determined to give him opportunities that they weren’t given as a child, with him being in private education since he was born - even whilst his parents worked as dishwashers on minimum wage. His parents have had a huge impact on his upbringing and on the person he has become today, and he feels as though he owes much of his current and future success to the way that they have brought him up until today. His passions generally revolve around sports and music, having played rugby for a professional teams developing player program (Northampton Saints), competing in multiple national hockey finals and founding a football team during his time in high school. He finds comfort in anything outdoors. His parents also convinced him to take up the violin and piano, something he is eternally grateful for. Again, highlighting the disparity between worlds that he grew up in. Episode 83 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: As the youngest child of 3, Sophie Boxall (Education @ Homerton College, University of Cambridge) is all too familiar with the struggle to meet the achievements of her siblings. She has an older brother with autism who defied expectations of him based in ableism and graduated from University of Portsmouth with a 2:1 in Biomedical Science after being told he couldn’t even attend a mainstream secondary school let alone go to University. To continue to raise the bar, her sister achieved the highest grades she could have at every educational level (annoyingly for Sophie) and graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA in English and to top it off did a masters at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge, during Sophie’s first year at Cambridge!A passion of Sophie’s is striving to achieve inclusive education and an inclusive society, this is particularly due to her experience of living and struggling with a hidden disability, her role as a young carer and her time working with children with additional needs. Sophie has been a feminist since the womb and feels this has created a perpetual undertone (or a very obvious one) of anger to accompany this, causing her to develop pretty good debating skills, which is a nightmare for anyone she argues with.Sophie has struggled with mental health issues through a prominent part of her teenage years, with a lot of trauma and anxiety causing her first year at Uni to be fairly tumultuous to say the least. During her teens, Sophie’s family experienced a lot of illness and her father being made redundant, so she experienced the move from middle (ish) class to working class. Episode 82 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Emma Dix has just finished her first year studying Economics at Girton College, University of Cambridge, and coming back to the UK for university has been the 7th time she has moved countries and the 11th time she has moved houses. From living in Nigeria, India, Spain, the UK and most recently the UAE, she's had her fair share of travel as well as the ability to experience many different cultures across the world. Over time, Emma has been able to discover her passions for both Mathematics and Economic Development, something that she has been able to delve deeper into within her degree. Simultaneously, she's had quite a few life lessons when it comes to making friends and sustaining long-lasting relationships, something which therapy to understand her ASD has certainly aided. He was born in London, grew up in Derbyshire and attended Christ's Hospital School in Sussex. At Cambridge he is a dedicated college rower, though by his own admission hardly the most proficient; he has rowed 4 Bumps campaigns, winning blades in 2022 and just got back from rowing the qualifier race at Henley. He is also involved in organising high-school level debating conferences for CUUNA, and is a lively member of CULC, often participating in their meetings.
