COLE ODIN

COLE ODIN (who occasionally uses the moniker Ownership) was raised to the pulse of the twin hearts of the San Francisco Bay Area… a gritty underground DJ scene, and the blinding light of a rock and roll stage. A gigging and writing multi-instrumentalist of over 25 years, his music is inspired by arm hairs on end, uncontrollable smiles, and the concept of a song you can't take off repeat.Since compatible comparison is justifiably needed by some to draw them into something new, the sounds of COLE ODIN's music can be traced from a variety of influences into a new hybrid of moving music. Some (sonic) examples might be… THE VERVE, COBBLESTONE JAZZ, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, KAUF, REMI WOLF, AMEN DUNES, ANDREW WEATHERALL, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, BILL WITHERS, ROISIN MURPHY, FLAMING LIPS, EDDIE C, TAME IMPALA, RUB 'N TUG, M83, FLYING MOJOTO BROTHERS, SPIRITUALIZED, TOOL, PSYCHEMAGIK, SINEAD O'CONNOR, ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, SPOON, PRINCE, JANE'S ADDICTION, NITZER EBB, TODD TERJE, LORDE, ALL THEM WITCHES,

I Remember the Sun by Jamel Lee I REMEMBER THE SUN by JAMEL LEE Closing out the record is a gorgeous deep-house ride by Jamel Lee Markx. As keyboardist and co-songwriter in Cole's old band Ownership, Jamel made his way into the Bay Area scene as a storied musician, only to emerge as one of its best DJs and most promising producers. "I Remember the Sun" pulls you in with its playful, yet thoughtful chords and flits, and sets the stage with a spoken word call to the power of the sun, and to being present in the moment. It wouldn't be out of place on a release from Ajuna Deep, but it's so much more than that. Joy Theater is proud to release the first track by Jamel Lee.

    THE ARTURIAN - BREAK FREE_SNIPPET

JOY THEATER PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS "FRIENDS IN MUSIC VOL. 1" SIDE 1 1. Dawn's Approaching (Psychemagik Remix) by Cole Odin 2. Evil Eyes by Babylon Black (aka Buna & Corey Black) 3. I Remember the Sun by Jamel Lee BREAK FREE by THE ARTURIAN Track five on the release is dedicated to the spirit of a fallen local hero in the Bay Area's techno scene, Paul Leath. The Arturian (aka Danny Varela) has crafted a beautiful cosmic brooder that's full of palpable emotions. Danny (along with Paul, Cole and Jamel) are a part of a collective called LDP, whose long-running houseboat retreats are the stuff of legend around the Bay. A remote cove on a NorCal lake... a 20-point Turbo Soundsystem... and a couple dozen of the best DJs you've never heard, make for your favorite weekend of the year. "Break Free" gives deep vibes that would fit finely shimmering across a dusty playa, or a moonlit lake, just as well as a strobe-slashed nightclub.

    SWEETDIQUE - D-FREQ_SNIPPET

JOY THEATER PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS "FRIENDS IN MUSIC VOL. 1" SIDE 1 1. Dawn's Approaching (Psychemagik Remix) by Cole Odin 2. Evil Eyes by Babylon Black (aka Buna & Corey Black) 3. I Remember the Sun by Jamel Lee D-FREQ by SWEETDIQUÈ As we move to the 2nd side, once again, Buna has a hand on the controls. This time teaming with local musician and DJ Jason Greer. Jason rose to prominence throwing killer parties with Solar (of Sunset fame) and another local hero Mozhgan, called We Are Monsters. As a DJ, Jason has been a local fave for decades, getting the nickname "The Machine" for his impeccable mixes, often coming at a time when most wouldn't be able to sign their name. As Sweetdiqué they offer "D-Freq", a slow burning, mid tempo chugger that brings to mind classic slo-mo vets Ghost Vision, and of course the Guv (IYKYK).

JESSE BLACK FAHNESTOCK - QUIENES SON_SNIPPET

JOY THEATER PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS "FRIENDS IN MUSIC VOL. 1" SIDE 1 1. Dawn's Approaching (Psychemagik Remix) by Cole Odin 2. Evil Eyes by Babylon Black (aka Buna & Corey Black) 3. Quienes Son by Jesse Black Fahnestock (aka 10:40) SIDE 2 1. D-Freq by Sweetdiquè (aka Buna & Jason Greer) 2. Break Free by The Arturian (aka Danny Varela) 3. I Remember the Sun by Jamel Lee QUIENES SON by JESSE BLACK FAHNESTOCK The 3rd track comes from afar, courtesy of Cole's longtime friend Jesse Black Fahnestock. Before moving to Sweden, Jesse lived in SF back in the 90s and was a big influence on Cole's beginnings as a DJ, as Jesse was a frequent selector for the famed Bulletproof parties. His deep musical knowledge and breadth of taste showed in his eclectic DJ sets, as it does in his work under the moniker of 10:40, and in his partnership with Darren Bell as the world-renowned duo Jezebell. It's dub-funk, it's disco-boogie, it's house-a-delica.... It's Jesse Black Fahnestock!

    BABYLON BLACK - EVIL EYES_SNIPPET

JOY THEATER PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS "FRIENDS IN MUSIC VOL. 1" SIDE 1 1. Dawn's Approaching (Psychemagik Remix) by Cole Odin 2. Evil Eyes by Babylon Black (aka Buna & Corey Black) 3. Quienes Son by Jesse Black Fahnestock (aka 10:40) SIDE 2 1. D-Freq by Sweetdiquè (aka Buna & Jason Greer) 2. Break Free by The Arturian (aka Danny Varela) 3. I Remember the Sun by Jamel Lee EVIL EYES by BABYLON BLACK In the 2nd slot comes a cool collab from two OGs of the Bay Area scene Tim "Buna" Babillions & Corey Black. Buna has a long history of work, but is mostly known for being partly responsible for the rave classic "20 Minutes of Disco Glory" which he did with DJ Garth and the late Eric James (as part of E.T.I.). Corey is most notably one half of 40 Thieves, whose well-known and vast catalog has been repping the Bay properly for over 2 decades on labels such as Leng, Rong, and Permanent Vacation among many others. He's also cofounder of Imperial Dub Recordings (the home of seminal SF group Dub Tribe) and cofounder of Smash Hit Music. Their sneaky slice of quirky disco funk feels like a Fat Freddy's Drop instrumental played at a zombie beach party.

    COLE ODIN - DAWN'S APPROACHING (PSYCHEMAGIK REMIX)_SNIPPET_

JOY THEATER PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS "FRIENDS IN MUSIC VOL. 1" SIDE 1 1. Dawn's Approaching (Psychemagik Remix) by Cole Odin 2. Evil Eyes by Babillon Black (aka Buna & Corey Black) 3. Quienes Son by Jesse Black Fahnestock (aka 10:40) SIDE 2 1. D-Freq by Sweetdiquè (aka Buna & Jason Greer) 2. Break Free by The Arturian (aka Danny Varela) 3. I Remember the Sun by Jamel Lee DAWN'S APPROACHING (PSYCHEMAGIK REMIX) by COLE ODIN The record starts with a previously released and loved track of Cole's, brilliantly remixed by the legendary Psychemagik. Originally out digitally on SF label Das Sind Wir in 2019 (when it made Tim Sweeney's "Best of 2019" mix on Beats In Space), it was planned to be pressed to vinyl. This unfortunately never materialized and the label went into hiatus, but thankfully DSW label head Trev Campbell released the rights to Cole & Joy Theater, and now Tom and Danny's amazing remix (a tribute to the Underworld classic "Rez",) can finally be que'd up by the vinyl-loving world.

    Dawn's Approaching

A dub-influenced bass line ebbs with a beat that doesn't ever break, while falsetto vocals swirl around a calling for hope, that recognizes change. The song reminds me of Spiritualized, if they did a balearic, deep house track. FALL IN LINE… REUNITE DAWN’S APPROACHING (AND IT’S GONNA BE BRIGHT) All music & lyrics written, performed, produced and mixed by Cole Odin Berggren. Released in digital format on August 12th, 2019 on Das Sind Wir recordings. Vinyl to be released early 2020! Copyright 2015 King of the Gods Music. BMI All rights reserved

Dawn's Approaching (C.J. Larsen & Trev Campbell Remix)

SF promoter, DJ and producer, CJ Larson teams up with label head Trev Campbell to deliver a chugging mid-tempo grooving take on Cole Odin's track. With hints of acid, psyche rock and deep house riding atop a steady house beat, it pumps and breathes through the vocal refrain. All music, lyrics and production by Cole Odin Copyright 2015 King of the Gods Music

    Dawn's Approaching (Psychemagik Remix)

It is my honor to share this amazing remix of "Dawn's Approaching" by super friends and family, Psychemagik. Their take slings the psyche-rawk-balearica into majestic, blippity-bloopity, tech-house territory. Bravo dudes! Released in digital August 9th, 2019 on Das Sind Wir recordings All music, lyrics and production by Cole Odin Copyright 2015 King of the Gods Music

    Dawn's Approaching (Shhhh Dub MIx)

If Spiritualized did a balearic sunrise party... this might be right at home. A hypnotic (mostly) instrumental... removing the comments section. Released in digital format on August 9th, 2019 on Das Sind Wir recordings. Vinyl to be released early 2020! All music & lyrics written, performed, produced and mixed by Cole Odin Berggren. Tone of Arc - Bottom Of The Sea (Cole Odin's Remix Of Arc)

Out now on SF label, Das Sind Wir! I'm proud to have put my spin on this fantastic new tune from my good friend, Derrick Boyd (aka TONE OF ARC). In this remix (aside from the switching up of the arrangement), I've played some live drums and dirty synths to sink this deep-house, psyche-rawk beast straight to the Bottom of the Sea. 'Twas an honor to be a part of it! Mucho thanks to Tom Coveney (aka Thomaas Banks) of Psychemagik for the extra mix assistance!

    Changelings (Instrumental Synth Mix)

Changelings is a psyche-rock-infused, mid-tempo, dub-tech-house song that teeters on a lurching beat, while a moody, brooding bass line rumbles atop it. Written by Cole Odin All instruments performed by Cole Odin Mixed (with love) by Dave Aju
