Medicine Abroad: Studying in the Netherlands

If you’re a U.S. student considering a medical degree, you’re likely familiar with the high costs and intense demands of studying medicine in the U.S. With tuition rates rising every year, exploring alternative options abroad might be worth your consideration—and the Netherlands offers some interesting possibilities. In the Netherlands, the 6-year medical program (combining bachelor’s and master’s degrees) is tuition-free for Dutch students, and international students from outside the EU can expect to pay around €32,000 ($34,800) per year. However, it's important to note that all medical programs in the Netherlands are now taught in Dutch. While Maastricht University offers a unique pathway for 2024/2025 where international students can start their studies in English and learn Dutch during their bachelor’s, the University of Groningen has recently canceled its English-taught medical program, making Dutch language proficiency essential for admission to other programs. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Roxanne and Marianna, two international students who navigated the English program at Groningen before it was discontinued. They share their personal experiences, challenges, and advice, giving us a firsthand look at what it’s like to pursue medical studies in the Netherlands. Tracey (USA): Going to College in Europe?

It is the time to reconsider "the most important" choice in life-College! I saw the clarity once after college: I would not again pay over 60K per year (back in 2014) for my college degree! This is obvious to me after studying abroad in Germany. I would much rather pay € 700 than $ 60,000 for a college degree annually. In this episode, Tracey (the Director of college counseling at Kents Hill School) and I will unfold the option of earning a college degree in Europe. The conclusion we made is simple: It is a great option! Like the trademark of Nike, I would say: "Just Do It"! But what are the hurdles of European college admissions (e.g., Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain)? Do I need to speak the native language?
