EP. 089 - JUST THE GASSHOLES (PRE SEASON SHOW)

EPISODE 089 — JUST THE GASSHOLESElk season is days away, BC industry is taking another beating, and somehow Curt can handle the mountains but apparently can’t handle getting blood drawn.Devin and Curt are back for another Just the Gassholes, kicking things off with Curt’s hospital visit and an unfortunate encounter with a needle that ends with him hitting the deck. From there, the conversation gets a little more serious as the boys dig into BC mill closures and what those shutdowns actually mean for workers, contractors, truckers, families, and small communities that depend on resource industries. Then it’s time for what everyone has been waiting for: September. The boys break down final elk-season prep, scouting and trail-cam intel, gear, rifles, and plans heading into the opener. Devin also gives his first impressions after finally getting behind the new Fierce Rage LR in .300 PRC—which naturally leads into another round of the internet telling them they apparently have “too much gun” for moose.Things get heated when the conversation turns to the Nelson-area grizzly saga. After the sow and one yearling were killed and the two remaining bears were relocated, both resurfaced around Christina Lake—with another eventually being killed after continuing to frequent human-use areas and access garbage. Devin and Curt dig into the backlash against Conservation Officers, the vigil held for the sow, food-conditioned bears, human responsibility, and the uncomfortable reality of what happens when wildlife loses its fear of people. Finally, the boys discuss disturbing allegations of remote airstrips and floatplane access being sabotaged in Northern BC and the WSSBC’s call for information.Hunting, rifles, elk season, BC industry, grizzlies, politics, and plenty of shit talking.Just the Gas Holes is back.

EP. 088 - MOOSE HUNT, FILM AND GEAR PREP w/ Dalton Peterson (Northern Son Media)

Episode 088 — Moose Hunt, Film & Gear PrepThe Northern BC hunt is getting close, and it’s time to figure out how the hell we’re actually going to pull this thing off.Devin and Curt are joined by Dalton Petersen of Northern Son Media, who’ll be behind the camera for this fall’s Northern BC adventure. The boys break down the plan for a remote moose hunt with the possibility of chasing late-season sheep — starting from a wall tent base camp, but staying ready to spike out when the hunt demands it.They get into the realities of preparing for remote northern country: cold weather, freezing water, river crossings, grizzlies, gear failures, long days and everything that can go sideways when you’re a long way from home.In this episode:Wall tent base camp vs. being ready to spike outBuilding a sleep system for cold Northern BC nightsWater filtration and storage when temperatures drop below freezingTrucks, quads, walking-beam trailers, winches, chains and spare parts.300 PRCs, bullet choice and rifle setup for moose and mountain huntingDalton’s approach to filming hunts from inside the experienceKeeping the film raw and authentic while stepping up the production qualityLessons Dalton has learned filming goats, sheep and other tough backcountry huntsFinding the balance between an old-school moose camp and bringing enough comfort to actually enjoy two weeks in the bushDalton also gives us a look at how he approaches hunt films — capturing the bullshit, camp life, struggles and personalities along with the kill. The goal isn’t to manufacture a story. It’s to put the cameras in the middle of the hunt and let the story happen. This one is part gear talk, part hunt planning and part figuring shit out before three guys disappear into Northern BC for two weeks.Moose. Sheep. Cameras. Cold weather. Questionable decisions.Sounds like a Come Out Heavy hunt.

In this episode, we sit down with Steve Speck and Mark Huelsing of Exo Mountain Gear—two guys who have spent decades pushing themselves in the mountains and redefining what hunting gear should be. This conversation goes far beyond packs and gear; it’s about the mindset, experiences, and lessons that only come from doing hard things in wild places. We dig into the true essence of mountain hunting—why it demands more from you physically and mentally, and why that’s exactly what keeps us coming back. Steve and Mark share the stories that shaped their journey, from early hunting roots to building Exo into one of the most respected names in backcountry gear.We also get deep into the evolution of pack design—what actually matters when you're miles in, under heavy load, and how small adjustments in fit and function can make or break a hunt. From packout strategies and load management to common mistakes guys make in the backcountry, there’s a ton of practical value in this one.But at its core, this episode is about more than gear—it’s about resilience, shared suffering, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from pushing limits in tough conditions.
