26th June 2026 // Rural News in partnership with Farmlands

Colin Hurst elected Federated Farmers president after Auckland AGM Government drops conservation land sale provisions from bill Game animal law change gives hunters formal voice in conservation Rural News is in partnership with Farmlands as part of CountryWide CONNECT with Andy Thompson & Sarah Perriam-Lampp - our daily rural show livestreamed from 11am-1pm. Visit country-wide.co.nz on how to watch / listen.   Colin Hurst elected Federated Farmers president after Auckland AGM South Canterbury arable and dairy farmer Colin Hurst has been voted in as the new Federated Farmers president, capping a dramatic annual general meeting that saw sitting president Wayne Langford's fourth-term bid ruled out before voting began. Hurst brings nearly forty years of farming experience, three years as vice president and a track record as the organisation's spokesperson on freshwater, biodiversity and emergency issues. His message to farmers is clear — their voices will be front and centre in every decision that affects them. Gisborne farmer Sandra Faulkner joins him as vice president, saying the next term will be defined by legislative reform — warning the new RMA and local government changes will shape how future generations farm. Hurst acknowledged Langford had been a phenomenal leader who genuinely transformed the organisation.   Government drops conservation land sale provisions from bill The Government has backed down on the most controversial aspects of its Conservation Amendment Bill, announcing it will remove provisions allowing for the disposal or exchange of conservation land. Conservation Minister Tama Potaka says the Government did not communicate clearly enough how the bill would improve conservation outcomes, and has acted on the public concerns that followed. Potaka met with the Environmental Defence Society and Forest and Bird, and agreed the disposal and exchange provisions would be stripped from the bill. He has also committed to working with those groups, other stakeholders and iwi on the remaining economic development aspects to ensure they deliver strong conservation outcomes. The bill — described as the most significant reform of conservation legislation in nearly forty years — remains before a parliamentary select committee and will continue to progress without the land disposal provisions.   Game animal law change gives hunters formal voice in conservation Legislation giving hunters a formal role in game animal management has passed into law, with ACT conservation spokesperson Cameron Luxton welcoming it as a long-overdue recognition of the conservation work hunters do in the field. The Game Animal Council Herds of Special Interest Amendment Bill puts game animal management on a proper statutory footing, giving the hunting community a genuine voice in how populations are managed on public land. Luxton says hunters — deerstalkers, tahr hunters and duck shooters — are doing real conservation work every weekend and this legislation finally acknowledges that contribution. He pushed for changes at select committee and says he has received assurances from Minister for Hunting and Fishing James Meager that the concerns he raised won't be a problem in practice. ACT says it will be watching closely to ensure the legislation delivers for the hunting community.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dino Kudrass - Skellerup’s square milking liners outselling round

Skellerup's square milking liners now outsell its round liners, Executive General Manager of Agri Dino Kudrass says. The design launched under the company's own VacPlus brand after others were slow to pick up the technology. "It's one of those things that when we first launched it, there was a lot of scepticism," he says. The company still manufactures about 300 different liner models that are used across the globe. Early adopters were cautious, but confidence built as word spread between neighbours. He says farmers proved the strongest advocates of the change. "Generally, when farmers tried them, they didn't go back; they could see a difference.” The liner role is less about extraction than stimulation, on a teat dense with nerve endings and exposed to infection. He says it carries that weight because it is the only part of the milking system that touches the cow. "The liners performing well will maximise the milk quality, and maximise the animal's comfort, which is intimately linked with the health of the udder, and ultimately milking speed and milk yield.” Round is the historical shape, held over from the era when liners were extruded tubes known as inflations. Skellerup learned, working with the United States dairy industry, that leaving open the cross-sectional area lets blood travel through the teat. "Round liners tend to have an effect similar to that of when you put a rubber band on your finger, they swell up – it cuts off the teats circulation “That's not good for milk production, and it's not good for the udder health.” Square barrels ease that problem, though the design is more than its outline. He says the corner radius, material thickness and barrel geometry all carry the innovation. A square liner fits a round shell, so farmers change only the liner and leave the rest of the cluster alone. He says liner longevity is measured against a hard ceiling, not the calendar, with deterioration and mastitis risk climbing after about 2,000. "2,500 milkings is really the benchmark maximum that you should put through a liner.” Herd and shed size will dictate how quickly that point arrives. Farmers can book a free dairy shed rubberware review through the skellerup.com, where Skellerup's technical team helps spec the right product and troubleshoot issues with your dairy rubberware. Visit country-wide.co.nz on how to watch / listen.   Colin Hurst elected Federated Farmers president South Canterbury farmer Colin Hurst has been elected as the new president of Federated Farmers, with Gisborne farmer Sandra Faulkner voted in as vice president at today's annual general meeting in Auckland. Hurst says his focus will be ensuring farmers' voices are heard loud and clear wherever decisions are being made. He paid tribute to outgoing president Wayne Langford, saying he had been a phenomenal leader who transformed and modernised the organisation. Faulkner farms with her husband near Gisborne across sheep, beef, cropping, citrus and farm forestry, and has served on the national board for four years. She says there is significant work still to do, particularly as new RMA and local government legislation will shape how future generations farm. Mark Hooper retains his board position, with Richard Dawkins and Karl Dean holding their meat and wool and dairy chair roles respectively.   China Business Summit puts trade relationship under scrutiny New Zealand's largest trading relationship is under the spotlight in Auckland today at the twelfth annual China Business Summit, as business and political leaders weigh commercial interests against a shifting geopolitical landscape. China remains New Zealand's biggest export market by a wide margin — nearly twenty billion dollars in goods last year, close to double the combined total of the next two largest markets. China is also our largest source of imports at eighteen-point-five billion dollars and our third-largest source of international visitors. Auckland Business Chamber chief executive Simon Bridges says while New Zealand has been moving closer to traditional security partners, commercial ties with China must be protected. He says in contrast to the uncertainty surrounding US trade policy, China has positioned itself as a predictable and reliable partner. The Middle East conflict has added complexity — exposing both countries to oil supply vulnerabilities and accelerating New Zealand's uptake of Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles, solar panels and technology. Beijing hosts APEC in Shenzhen later this year, adding further diplomatic weight to the summit's timing.   a2 Milk declares three-hundred million dollar special dividend a2 Milk has declared a three-hundred million dollar special dividend to be paid on July twenty-fourth, following Chinese regulatory approval earlier this week for the company to transition its infant formula product registrations to the a2 brand. Chair Pip Greenwood says the dividend reflects the company's commitment to delivering shareholder returns while maintaining disciplined capital management. Primary Industries New Zealand Awards celebrate sector's best in Auckland Safer Farms ambassador Lindy Nelson wins national safety leadership award Government signals options to shield Waikato farmers from old planning rules Rural News is in partnership with Farmlands as part of CountryWide CONNECT with Andy Thompson & Sarah Perriam-Lampp - our daily rural show livestreamed from 11am-1pm. Visit country-wide.co.nz on how to watch / listen.   Primary Industries New Zealand Awards celebrate sector's best in Auckland More than five-hundred people gathered in Auckland last night for the Primary Industries New Zealand Awards, with dairy leader Jim van der Poel receiving a standing ovation as the night's highest honour was announced. Van der Poel received the Outstanding Contribution to Primary Industries Award, with judges describing him as an absolute titan of the New Zealand dairy industry. Van Der Poel was instrumental in forming Fonterra and chaired DairyNZ through one of its most challenging periods, including Mycoplasma bovis and significant environmental regulation changes. Jamie Mackay was crowned Agricultural Communicator of the Year, while Beef and Lamb New Zealand chair Kate Acland took the inaugural Rural Woman of the Year Award for inspirational leadership in changing the culture and effectiveness of the organisation. Neil Bateup won the Champion Award for decades of service to rural wellbeing, while Danielle Hovmand claimed the Emerging Leader Award, and Parininihi ki Waitotara won the Kaitiakitanga Award for its conservation work.   Safer Farms ambassador Lindy Nelson wins national safety leadership award Meanwhile Safer Farms ambassador Lindy Nelson has been named winner of the Leadership category at the 2026 New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards also in Auckland. The Wairarapa farmer chaired Safer Farms from 2020 to January this year and was instrumental in developing the sector-wide Farm Without Harm plan. She also helped create campaigns including Half Arsed Stops Here and Safer Rides, which offers farmers financial incentives to install crush protection devices on quad bikes. Safer Farms chair Murray Donald says Nelson's leadership is grounded in real farming experience — she understands the pressures farmers face and has consistently championed practical change that makes a difference on farm. Nelson was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2016 for her services to women and agriculture.   Government signals options to shield Waikato farmers from old planning rules Waikato farmers facing potentially costly rules under the regional plan change process have received encouraging news, with Agriculture Minister Todd McClay signalling the Government will look at options to better align regional rulemaking with the incoming national planning system. Speaking at the Primary Industries New Zealand Summit in Auckland, McClay said he had raised the issue directly with Minister Bishop, arguing it made no sense for Waikato farmers to be bound by rules developed under the old Resource Management Act while a new national system was being adopted. Federated Farmers has been urging the Government to pause Waikato Region Plan Change One until major national reforms have settled. Waikato Federated Farmers vice president Andrew Reymer says McClay's comments will be hugely encouraging — but the organisation will now wait to see what options officials bring to the table.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

23rd June 2026 // Rural News in partnership with Farmlands

NZ dairy season sets new production record BNZ and Pāmu pioneer new model to earn revenue from native forests KWKiwi's William Kenna wins Bay of Plenty Young Grower title Rural News is in partnership with Farmlands as part of CountryWide CONNECT with Andy Thompson & Sarah Perriam-Lampp - our daily rural show livestreamed from 11am-1pm. Visit country-wide.co.nz on how to watch / listen.   NZ dairy season sets new production record New Zealand's dairy industry has set a new full-season production record, with two-billion-and-twenty-six-million kilograms of milk solids collected in the 2025/26 season — up four-point-five percent on last season and four-point-one percent above the previous record set in 2020/21. May collections alone hit one-hundred-and-eight-million-seven-hundred-and-thirty-thousand kilograms of milk solids, a five percent year-on-year increase and a new record for the month. The record reflects a sector that has shifted back into expansion mode after years of consolidation, driven by stronger global commodity prices, improved farmgate returns and favourable La Niña weather conditions through summer that kept pasture growth strong and reduced supplementary feed requirements. Looking ahead, the growth trajectory is expected to ease. Rising fuel, fertiliser, feed and freight costs linked to the Strait of Hormuz disruption are already lifting input costs, and a strong El Niño event is anticipated. June collections are forecast to ease around three-point-three percent year-on-year, with July also slightly lower.   BNZ and Pāmu pioneer new model to earn revenue from native forests   BNZ and state-owned farming enterprise Pāmu have developed a new way for landowners to generate revenue from existing native forests — without needing to plant new trees or wait decades for carbon credits. Under the model, Pāmu leases a six-hundred hectare native block in northern Hawke's Bay to BNZ, which uses the forest's carbon removals to account for its own emissions. The majority of revenue flows back to Pāmu to fund pest control and additional planting. Native forests planted before 1990 are excluded from the Emissions Trading Scheme, leaving landowners with no way to monetise their conservation assets. This leasehold approach works outside the ETS while meeting international carbon accounting standards. Pāmu chief executive Mark Leslie says the approach values the contribution of established native forests today, rather than waiting decades for new plantings to mature. BNZ hopes others will adopt the model.   KWKiwi's William Kenna wins Bay of Plenty Young Grower title William Kenna, orchard and innovation lead at his family's kiwifruit business KWKiwi near Katikati, has won the Bay of Plenty 2026 Young Grower title and heads to the national competition in Cromwell on August twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth. Kenna returned to the family business in 2020 after studying marketing and logistics, and now splits his time between orchard work and developing in-house technology tools covering fruit quality forecasting, smarter water use and climate insights. Runner-up was Aimee Barker-Gilbert from Hume Pack-N-Cool in Katikati, with Patterson Kelly from Trevelyan's Pack and Cool in Te Puke placing third.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

NZ watching closely after bird flu detected in Australia a2 Milk secures China approval for Pokeno facility products T&G's Maddi Sheridan wins Hawke's Bay Young Fruitgrower title Rural News is in partnership with Farmlands as part of CountryWide CONNECT with Andy Thompson & Sarah Perriam-Lampp - our daily rural show livestreamed from 11am-1pm. Visit country-wide.co.nz on how to watch / listen.   NZ watching closely after bird flu detected in Australia New Zealand is monitoring the situation closely after Australian authorities confirmed H5N1 bird flu in a migratory seabird in Western Australia, with Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard saying the country is well prepared but everyone needs to take steps now. Initial tests on a sick giant petrel found in the same area also suggest infection, though Australian authorities report no mass mortalities or poultry infections so far. Hoggard says New Zealand's geographic isolation has bought time to prepare, but if the virus arrives it's likely to spread among wild birds and won't be eradicable. Farmers and bird owners are urged to watch for signs of illness, prevent contact between their birds and wild birds, and maintain good biosecurity hygiene. Anyone finding three or more sick or dead wild birds together should report it to the exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66, without handling or moving them. There is no food safety risk, and the risk to human health is assessed as low.   a2 Milk secures China approval for Pokeno facility products The a2 Milk Company has received Chinese regulatory approval to transition infant formula product registrations linked to its Pokeno facility to the a2 brand — clearing the final hurdle in its acquisition of the facility. With approval now secured from China's State Administration for Market Regulation, a2 Milk no longer has the right to unwind the Pokeno acquisition. New products are expected to launch later this year, with no change to the timing or financial benefits outlined when the acquisition was first announced. Chief executive David Bortolussi says the approval marks a significant milestone in the company's China growth strategy, supporting long-term market access, accelerating advanced nutritional manufacturing capability, and capturing stronger financial returns. The board is expected to convene soon to declare a three-hundred million dollar special dividend, fully franked and unimputed, with further details on timing to be confirmed.   T&G's Maddi Sheridan wins Hawke's Bay Young Fruitgrower title T&G Global quality and compliance manager Maddi Sheridan has won the Hawke's Bay 2026 Young Fruitgrower title and will now represent the region at the national Young Grower of the Year competition in Cromwell on August twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth. Sheridan switched from an agri commerce degree to horticultural science at Massey University after a T&G scholarship led to summer work, and now oversees technical work across T&G's six-hundred hectares of Hawke's Bay orchards. Runner-up was fellow T&G employee Joseph Stenberg, with third place shared between Saffron Riley from Mr Apples and William Horsefield from Ceed in Waipawa.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ANZCO Foods to acquire Greenlea Group in red meat consolidation Conservation land sale law sparks heated parliamentary exchange Fisheries Amendment Bill delayed until after election Rural News is in partnership with Farmlands as part of CountryWide CONNECT with Andy Thompson & Sarah Perriam-Lampp - our daily rural show livestreamed from 11am-1pm. Visit country-wide.co.nz on how to watch / listen. ANZCO Foods to acquire Greenlea Group in red meat consolidation Two red meat processors are set to combine, with ANZCO Foods announcing an agreement to purchase Hamilton-based Greenlea Group — subject to Commerce Commission and Overseas Investment Office approval. Japanese-owned ANZCO, based in Christchurch, is one of New Zealand's largest red meat processors with revenue of two-point-two billion dollars and plants across the South Island and lower North Island. Greenlea operates two Waikato beef processing sites and is New Zealand's fourth-largest beef exporter with annual turnover of six-hundred million dollars. ANZCO chief executive Peter Conley says Greenlea will continue to operate as a standalone entity if the deal is approved, providing continuity for staff, farmers and customers while the combined business explores future growth opportunities. Greenlea managing director Tony Egan says the sale is about securing the company's legacy and long-term success as the family-owned business works through succession planning.  Egan will remain involved as an adviser and board member. Conservation land sale law sparks heated parliamentary exchange Proposed law changes that could open up conservation land for sale have sparked a heated confrontation in Parliament, with accusations of lying traded across the select committee room. Conservation Minister Tama Potaka faced intense questioning over legislation that Forest and Bird says could put up to sixty percent of conservation land at risk of disposal. Potaka was adamant the intent was only to sell off low-value land — what he repeatedly described as "bits and bobs" — pointing to examples like a MetService building in Wellington and a West Coast gravel reserve surrounded by farmland. Green Party co-leaders Chlöe Swarbrick and Marama Davidson called the minister a liar. National's Grant McCallum responded with "hypocrite", and Labour's Rachel Brooking told Potaka to shush.Potaka called suggestions of a mass sell-off "highly ridiculous and fantasy land", saying anyone claiming sixty percent of the estate was at risk was in the Olympic championships for exaggeration. Fisheries Amendment Bill delayed until after election The controversial Fisheries Amendment Bill looks set to be pushed past the election, with Fisheries Minister Shane Jones acknowledging the legislation could benefit from more "panel beating" before progressing. Jones told a parliamentary scrutiny hearing he was aware of significant disharmony across the industry and Parliament, and suggested the select committee extend its reporting deadline — effectively delaying the bill until after November's vote. Jones had dismissed critics as "noisy voices" before the coalition reversed a key proposal to scrap most minimum size limits for commercial fishers.  Other contentious elements remain, including limits on judicial review timeframes and restrictions on sharing on-board camera footage under the Official Information Act. Labour is calling for the bill to be scrapped entirely and started from scratch.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
