Government pilots AI tool to speed up biosecurity import standards ACT promises to transfer game animal management from DOC to hunters NZ shearers lose Wales test series by less than one point WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SHOW LIVE (11am-1pm NZST) ON THE GO? Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard says the current process for developing import health standards — the rules goods must meet before entering New Zealand — has not kept pace with modern trade and innovation. The AI tool would take on document-heavy work while key decisions remain with Biosecurity New Zealand experts. Hoggard says the goal is to free up staff time and improve consistency, not reduce the quality of assessments. For farmers and growers, the wider reform programme — including live plant import system reform — is expected to improve access to new plant genetics and reduce unnecessary restrictions on productivity. ACT promises to transfer game animal management from DOC to hunters ACT is promising to transfer responsibility for game animal management on conservation land from DOC to the Game Animal Council, with full funding — giving hunters formal authority over the animals and landscapes they already manage on the ground. The policy, announced at the weekend’s Hunting and Wildlife Expo, also includes multi-year funding contracts for community groups maintaining backcountry huts, improved hunting access to public land and new protections against interference with lawful hunts including through drones and helicopters. ACT conservation spokesperson Cameron Luxton says DOC cannot manage New Zealand's conservation estate alone, pointing to more than two-thousand-three-hundred hut closure alerts since 2021 and a maintenance backlog community groups are already filling at a fraction of the cost. Deputy leader Nicole McKee says hunters have spent generations managing game animals, controlling predators and clearing tracks — but Government still treats them as a problem rather than a conservation asset. ACT would also open the Voluntary Nature Credits Market to accredited hunting groups, rewarding verified conservation outcomes. NZ shearers lose Wales test series by less than one point New Zealand shearers Jack Fagan and Hemi Braddick have gone down to Wales by just point-nine of a point in the deciding test at the Corwen Shears in North Wales, handing Wales a three-one series win on the Wools of New Zealand UK Tour. Gethin Lewis claimed the day for Wales with the best time, shearing twenty lambs in eleven minutes fifty-three seconds — nine seconds ahead of Fagan. Braddick had the best quality work on the board, averaging less than one penalty per lamb, finishing just over half a point behind Lewis overall. The result reverses the earlier series in New Zealand, where Fagan and Toa Henderson beat the same Welsh pairing three-nil across tests at Aria, Pukekohe and Taumarunui.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

India and New Zealand to establish kiwifruit centres Live ammunition found in wool prompts safety warning Animal and Plant Health Sector Recognises Long-Standing Contributors WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SHOW LIVE (11am-1pm NZST) ON THE GO? Dr Stephanie Montgomery, programme manager for New Zealand’s Bioeconomy ScienceInstitute, is leading the Green kiwifruit project, with the first centre planned for Nagaland innorth-east India. The project will focus on knowledge transfer, orchard production and supply chain capability, rather than sharing commercially protected varieties. Montgomery says Indian growers have been welcoming and keen to improve production, butthe project faces challenges including steep, high-altitude orchards, limited soil data andpoor roading. Zespri says the FTA also provides greater certainty to grow demand in India, with kiwifruitreceiving zero tariffs on an initial 6200-tonne quota. Live ammunition found in wool prompts safety warning The discovery of live rifle ammunition and a shotgun cartridge at a Hawke’s Bay woolprocessing plant is prompting an urgent safety warning across the wool industry. Eight live rounds were found in May at Woolworks’ Awatoto factory, after wool from multipleNorth Island farms had been combined. The source farm cannot be identified. Chief executive Rosstan Mazey says the rounds were found in a tray beneath the woolopening equipment, creating a serious health and safety risk for workers. He says farmers, shearers and wool classers need to be more vigilant inside woolsheds, particularly around duck shooting season when spent cartridges and live ammunition may bepresent. The National Council of NZ Wool Interests and New Zealand Wool Classers Association areurging everyone in the supply chain to ensure only wool goes into bales. Animal and Plant Health Sector Recognises Long-Standing Contributors Two individuals with decades of service to New Zealand's animal and plant health sectorhave been recognised at the annual APHANZ Awards dinner in Wellington. Gavin Kerr received the Outstanding Contribution Award for five years as APHANZ chair, during which he oversaw the merger of two legacy industry associations into APHANZ andestablished the Emerging Leaders Forum. The President's Award went to Awilda Baoumgren, Specialist Adviser Veterinary MedicineRegulation at MPI's ACVM team, recognised for more than a decade of pragmatic,evidence-based regulatory advice that has strengthened the working relationship betweenindustry and government. Acting APHANZ board chair Fraser Hodgson says Awilda exemplifies the consistent, approachable leadership that underpins good regulatory practice — and ultimately supportsbetter outcomes for New Zealand farmers and animal owners. APHANZ chief executive Liz Shackleton says the awards highlight the people who deliverprogress through expertise, pragmatism and collaboration across the sector.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The commission says the current emissions budget is under serious pressure and the subsequent one cannot be met with current plans and policies. It says the next twelve to twenty-four months are critical to correct course. The Emissions Trading Scheme is identified as a key concern, with the commission saying it is not efficiently driving emissions reductions due to low market confidence and price volatility. Agriculture remains outside the ETS under current Government settings, with the focus instead on agri-tech investment to reduce methane. The report does identify some positives — increased EV uptake, solar and time-of-use electricity charges among them. All major parties are proposing household solar policies ahead of November's election. Arms Bill changes welcomed by licensed firearms owners Licensed firearm owners say they have finally been heard, with the Government adopting a range of practical improvements to the Arms Bill following thousands of submissions to the Justice Select Committee. Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee says the changes remove unnecessary red tape, improve public safety and ensure the law functions as intended — in contrast to the rushed 2019 and 2020 reforms that she says treated licensed owners as villains while failing to reduce unlicensed criminal offending. Key changes include extending multi-entry visitor licences to eighteen months — benefiting those returning annually for duck shooting, the roar or sporting competitions — and clarifying that museum workers do not require special endorsements to handle firearms in the course of their duties. Gunsmiths will also have longer to process restricted firearms without additional permits. Most of the bill comes into force September twenty-third, with remaining provisions by February 2028. Apple and Pear industry gathers in Queenstown for annual conference Growers, exporters, researchers and industry partners have descended on Queenstown for the New Zealand Apples and Pears Conference, with a packed first day covering research and development, biosecurity and the future of the sector. NZAPI chief executive Danielle Adsett says the strong turnout reflects the industry's determination to keep building a world-class sector in an increasingly complex environment. At the annual general meeting, directors Adrienne Sharp from T&G Global and Cameron Taylor from Taylor Corp were re-elected, with Ross Wilson from Sunpeach Orchard joining the board as a new director. Chair Andrew Gibbs acknowledged outgoing director and former chair Lesley Wilson for seven years of service. Day two of the conference today features Agriculture and Trade Minister Todd McClay as keynote speaker, with sessions covering market access, biosecurity challenges and the wider economic and political environment facing New Zealand horticulture.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Weather is emerging as a key watchpoint. Prolonged heatwaves across Europe and the United States are beginning to weigh on milk production, improving market sentiment and providing support to prices. US launches safeguard investigation into lamb imports The United States has formally requested an investigation into lamb imports, with the US Trade Representative asking the International Trade Commission to launch a safeguard inquiry that is expected to take four to six months. The investigation is not specifically directed at New Zealand but will cover all lamb imports into the US. New Zealand lamb earns an average of twenty-one-ninety-nine per kilogram in the American market — well above the global average of fourteen dollars — meaning any restrictions would displace product into lower-value markets. Meat Industry Association independent chair Nathan Guy says the sector is confident in its position that New Zealand's exports have not caused damage or posed any threat to the US sheep industry. He says New Zealand lamb complements rather than competes with US domestic production, filling supply gaps and occupying a distinct market position. The sector has engaged legal representation in Washington and is working closely with Government officials to ensure New Zealand's case is clearly put to the Commission. Marton Maltings to close New Zealand's largest malting factory is closing, with Malteurop announcing its Marton mill will shut at the end of September — leaving fourteen workers without jobs and grain growers across the region facing an uncertain future. The Marton Maltings has been the largest malting operation in New Zealand since 2008, supplying around seventy percent of the total malt market, including to Lion, DB and Asahi. Rangitīkei mayor Andy Watson says it's another employer lost from the district, and the impact on local grain farmers comes at a time when rising costs are already making things tough. Several companies have since approached him showing interest in the significant grain storage and production opportunities at the site. Canterbury-based competitor Gladfield hopes to pick up some of the business, but acknowledges New Zealand will become more reliant on imported malt as a result. Malteurop's existing Geelong facility has the capacity to service the entire New Zealand market.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Federated Farmers claims win as Government drops council-iwi agreement transfers Inflation hits two-year high on fuel price surge Asian markets driving New Zealand avocado export growth WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SHOW LIVE (11am-1pm NZST) ON THE GO? Download CountryWide Connect mobile app to stream the show via Apple Car Play or Android Auto. Or try the voice command ‘Play CountryWide Connect’ on Amazon Alexa or Google Home. Apple: https://apps.apple.com/nz/app/countrywide-connect/id6761033881 Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.co.countrywide&hl=en_NZ Federated Farmers claims win as Government drops council-iwi agreement transfers Federated Farmers is claiming a win after the Government agreed to stop existing and new Mana Whakahono ā Rohe agreements from transferring into the new resource management system. The move comes just a week after Federated Farmers raised the alarm about councils rushing to lock in iwi partnership agreements before the law changes — including Environment Canterbury, which gave elected councillors just one week to consider an agreement with Ngāi Tahu. RMA reform spokesperson Mark Hooper says the Government has listened. Under the changes recommended by the Environment Committee, no existing or initiated agreements will carry over into the new planning system. Instead, councils will be able to enter more narrowly scoped iwi participation agreements with clear legislative guardrails. Hooper says decision-making powers affecting communities must remain with democratically accountable elected representatives — and the new guardrails are an important step toward ensuring that. Inflation hits two-year high on fuel price surge New Zealand's annual inflation rate has risen to four-point-one percent in the year to June — its highest level in more than two years and above the Reserve Bank's one-to-three percent target band — driven largely by surging fuel prices. Petrol rose twenty-seven-point-five percent annually and accounted for almost a quarter of the total inflation increase. Diesel jumped forty-seven-point-seven percent in the June quarter alone. Together, petrol and diesel accounted for nearly two thirds of the one-point-five percent quarterly rise. Without fuel, annual inflation would have been two-point-nine percent — comfortably within the Reserve Bank's target. Electricity was the next largest contributor, up twelve percent for the year, while council rates rose eight-point-eight percent. Economists expect the Reserve Bank to begin raising the Official Cash Rate at its September meeting, with further increases likely in December. Asian markets driving New Zealand avocado export growth New Zealand's avocado sector is pivoting rapidly toward Asia as Australian demand softens, with exports to South Korea surging seventy percent and shipments to China, Hong Kong and India nearly doubling in the 2025/26 season. Total export volumes reached three-point-four million trays, down around nine percent on the previous year due to wind damage and constrained market windows. Australia remains the largest single market at twenty-two percent, but five years ago it accounted for more than two thirds of all Kiwi avocado exports — highlighting just how far diversification has come. The newly signed New Zealand-India trade deal is adding further optimism, with avocado tariffs set to be phased out over ten years. Exports to India are already growing strongly. Globally, avocado production continues to expand, but the developing El Niño is expected to increase yield variability and market volatility rather than cause a broad supply squeeze.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kelly Higgins - Feeder calf values climbing as dairy beef demand reshapes market
Feeder calf values have jumped significantly this season. Kelly Higgins, Regional Livestock Manager for Carrfields Livestock, says Friesian bull calves are going for $300 to $500 in the autumn just gone, and beef bull calves between $400 to $600 against $100 to $200 for Friesians a year ago. "Traditionally the feeder calves have been viewed as a by-product of the dairy farming system, but they're certainly now a genuine income stream for the dairy farmers in what are typically leaner cash flow months," he says. The spring market has opened with Friesian bulls at $200 to $300 on limited numbers and top Charolais calves reaching $560. "The autumn calves have sold exceptionally well up here in the Waikato – all the rearers have pretty much sold out." He says there are several forces keeping prices firm. National beef herds have shrunk as land shifts into forestry, dairy beef is filling the gap, and a strong yearling market has some farmers rearing their own replacements again. "We're seeing record beef schedules at the moment, with demand for red meat and protein exceptionally high." He says the Friesian bull is trading well from weaners to yearlings and 18-month cattle. "The Friesian bull has been a rollercoaster in the past, up and down, but it is absolutely back in vogue again now.” He says farmers are being more strategic at mating. Beef straws from Charolais, Angus, Hereford and Speckle Park are going over lower-producing cows. "You would have seen in the past, the lion's share of those farmers would have used the Friesian genetics to capture that export market, but as we know, that export market is no longer." He says the buyers span larger rearers, dry stock farmers and small block holders rearing for themselves. "We also use bidr at our auctions, and that has seen those calves travel through a much larger buying bench through the country.” He says this means calves are moving weekly to Hawke's Bay, King Country, Wairarapa and Northland. Pressure to process fewer bobby calves is driving more use of beef straws, and an older farming demographic favouring dairy beef cattle for their quieter temperament. "Quality, well-marked calves with age on them, and you should be on the money. "I believe the dairy beef market is here to stay.” This is brought to you in partnership with Carrfields Livestock. New Zealand holds position as world's largest single-country dairy exporter Firearms owners group pushes back at Safety Authority over trust survey criticism Poultry remain clear despite second wild bird flu detection WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SHOW LIVE (11am-1pm NZST) ON THE GO? New Zealand's contribution has held remarkably steady over eight years at around twenty-two billion kilograms, and the country remains dominant in whole milk powder — accounting for fifty-six percent of global exports, a share stable over time. China's dairy imports have softened significantly, with milk powder imports halving over four years as domestic production grows. New Zealand has adapted well, becoming China's largest supplier of imported liquid milk and cream since 2024, while Middle East, Southeast Asian and Brazilian markets are filling the gap. The EU remains the world's largest overall dairy exporter at twenty-seven percent, followed by New Zealand and the United States. Firearms owners group pushes back at Safety Authority over trust survey criticism The Council of Licensed Firearms Owners is pushing back after the Firearms Safety Authority publicly dismissed its annual trust survey, calling out Acting Director Superintendent Bruce Bird for attacking the messenger rather than addressing the substance of the concerns raised. COLFO says its 2026 survey received one-thousand-five-hundred-and-seventy-five responses from an estimated two-hundred-and-twenty-thousand licensed owners — giving it a margin of error of around two-point-five percent, modelled on the Authority's own survey format. The organisation says Bird's claim that the survey invariably finds licensed owners want less regulation misrepresents their position. COLFO says it has always supported robust licensing — what members reject is Police administering the Arms Act, a view shared by the Justice Select Committee, which recommended removing sworn officers from day-to-day firearms regulation. COLFO says the Authority chose not to contest the substance of the complaints — declining trust, standover tactics, registry errors and armed home visits to law-abiding licence holders — and instead attacked the survey methodology. Poultry remain clear despite second wild bird flu detection New Zealand now has two confirmed cases of H5 bird flu, with a second detection confirmed on Thursday in a kāhu swamp harrier found near Carterton in the Wairarapa — following the initial detection in a seabird on Petone beach in Wellington. No further detections have been recorded, and there is no evidence of mass wildlife mortality and no detections in poultry. Chicken and eggs remain safe to eat and the risk to human health remains very low. MPI has staff on the ground in Wellington's south coast and Wairarapa carrying out checks, and is offering one-on-one support and advice to poultry and egg operations in both regions. A technical advisory group of expert scientists is also being established. DOC's vaccination programme for three-hundred core breeding birds from five of New Zealand's most endangered species continues. Anyone finding three or more sick or dead wild birds together should not touch them and should call the MPI hotline on 0800 80 99 66 immediately.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
