I'm sure I have as much forgot your poor dear uncle as if he had never existed".MiscellaneousDon't forget to send us your crafty videosBOOK/WATCH PARTIES coming up in 2025: Last Thursday of every month, 8pm Eastern:Sep—The Last Unicorn (movie)Oct—Random Harvest (book)Nov—Random Harvest (movie)Dec—Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal (book)*CraftLit's Socials*• Find everything here: https://www.linktr.ee/craftlitchannel• Join the newsletter: http://eepurl.com/2raf9• Podcast site: http://craftlit.com• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CraftLit/• Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/craftlit• Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/craftlit/• TikTok podcast: https://www.tiktok.com/@craftlit• Email: [email protected]• Previous CraftLit Classics can be found here: https://bit.ly/craftlit-library-2023*SUPPORT THE SHOW!*• CraftLit App Premium feed bit.ly/libsynpremiumcraftlit (only one tier available)• PATREON: https://patreon.com/craftlit (all tiers, below)——Walter Harright - $5/mo for the same audio as on App——Jane Eyre - $10/mo for even-month Book Parties——Mina Harker - $15/mo for odd-month Watch Parties*All tiers and benefits are also available as*—*YouTube Channel Memberships*—*Ko-Fi* https://ko-fi.com/craftlit—*NEW* at CraftLit.com — Premium Memberships https://craftlit.com/membership-levels/*IF you want to join a particular Book or Watch Patry but you don't want to join any of the above membership options*, please use PayPal.me/craftlit or CraftLit @ Venmo and include what you want to attend in the message field. Hens the Rubric (from the Latin word for 'Red") signified someting of importance and later came to mean "injunction" or general rule. REALLY??? LATIN FOR RED????13:50 - Mammon - Matthew 6:24, Devil of Covetovness or Demon of Greed (medieval and Milton - lowercase) (in hebrew meant money, modern hebrew. = wealth), , unjust worldly gain - ANNOTATION is partly WRONG, But there WAS a Syrian God of Wealth19:45 - AAah Voo DEER-ray zhuh Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman - Basically Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - the easiest piece of music one could learn to play. Mozart had done one of his 12 variations (though, personally, I'm partial to Tom Lehrer's Clementine)21:25 - She could "trace out patterns very nicely for Muslin Embroidery, by dint of placing a piece of silver-paper over the design to be copied, and holding both against the window-pane, while she marked the scollop and eyelet-holes". ANNOTATION SAYS "Probably broderie anglaise which used scalloped edges and a pattern of holes sewn round with thread like a button-hole."22:55 - a Celestial Globe to learn simple astronomy/constellations https://fi.edu/en/science-and-education/collection/celestial-globe24:35 - Wool-work and counting threads - think of needlepoint and petit-point, but you have to COUNT THE THREADS in a muslin or light canvas backing. Around 1830 v popular to stitch portraits of royalty (again, at least 10 years out of popularity elsewhere, but still popular in Cranford). Printed, gridded patterrns (Beeton's Book of Needlework)27:05 - Under a glass shade - put a glass dome or CLOCHE over things to keep dust off—would have been REALLY important b/c it was DUSTY back then and only got worse in London as the Century went on (also used in gerdening for heat retention)27:55 - Couchant - lying down in Heraldry Image from Sodacan, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0, via Wikimedia Commons28:35 - East India Tea Company - Founded in 1600 by QE1 and held the chartered right to trade with India and China and IMPORT the tea as a monopoly until 1834 (BTW, Twining's started as a coffee SHOP/Room adding tea in 1717 , bought adjacent building for ladies to take tea(might be Western world's oldest dry tea and coffee shop) at No. 216 Strand london in 1706; still operating today - and logo created in 1787 is worlds oldest in continuous use) B/c the EIC's charter was for trade/importing, anyone could SELL the tea.31:25 - our mites: Biblical times a mite was the lowest denomination of coin in Judea (two mites = one lepta (thin or small in Greek) which was equivalent to a quadran, the smallest Roman coin), (also see Mark 12:43 re: the Widow's Mite where Christ praises the window who gives her last two mites in the temple) Two mites were worth about 1/64th of a denari - a day's wage for a common worker, toay about 1/8 of a US penny (1 cent)33:40 - Spills - QUILLING (thank you Aimee!) video of making Quilled spills37:15 - Comfit - nut, seed, etc, covered in sugar coating - link to max miller's video on Sugar PlumsPost-chapter Notes1:25:42 - SSA update - Broader information from Snopes and SSA-specific update - but don't feel the need to read other sources. The customer's copy was their only proof of the account's balance.14:12 Envelope usage / turning inside out (ETSY doing this NOW)Whole vs half sheet and crossed letters16:36 STRING and Indian-rubber rings17:24 "India-rubber" was the 19th-century term for what we now just call rubber—and India-rubber rings were small rubber loops or bands like we use today.Came from the latex of tropical trees (especially Hevea brasiliensis)18:42 TONQUIN beans: TONKA beans: Tonka beans are the wrinkled, black seeds of the Dipteryx odorata tree, native to South America. Chefs outside the US use them in desserts and to replace nuts. (Revelation 9:11, KJV)Meaning:Abaddon (Hebrew) means "destruction" or "place of destruction."Apollyon (Greek) means "destroyer."It's overblown biblical satire—calling someone "Apollyon" in Cranford is like referring to a strict schoolmarm as "Beelzebub."38:08 Bonus Bernardus non video omnia The Blessed Bernard does not see everything - maybe said by St Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153)— This quote is often attributed (possibly apocryphally) to Peter Abelard, the 12th-century theologian, as a gentle jab at St. Bernard of Clairvaux, with whom he clashed theologically.Meaning: Even the wisest man (here, Blessed Bernard) can be wrong sometimes.Post-chapter NotesChapone and Carter and Bluestockings (see below for big notes)real historical women writers, both part of the 18th-century English Bluestocking movement—educated, literary women who promoted female intellectualism and moral development. Gaskell is absolutely name-dropping intentionally here for Cranford's themes of domestic gentility, moral seriousness, and self-improvement.⸻Mrs. Hester Chapone (1727–1801)Best known for Letters on the Improvement of the Mind (1773), addressed to her niece. It was a conduct book for young women, offering advice on moral character, reading habits, and proper behavior.Hugely popular—Cranford-adjacent readers would know her by name.⸻Mrs. Elizabeth Carter (1717–1806)A respected scholar, translator, and poet—a genuine intellectual heavyweight.Famously translated the Discourses of Epictetus from Greek in 1758—the first English translation by a woman, and one of the first of Epictetus at all.She knew multiple classical and modern languages and was close friends with figures like Samuel Johnson and Hannah More.*CraftLit's Socials*• Find everything here: https://www.linktr.ee/craftlitchannel• Join the newsletter: http://eepurl.com/2raf9• Podcast site: http://craftlit.com• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CraftLit/• Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/craftlit• Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/craftlit/• TikTok podcast: https://www.tiktok.com/@craftlit• Email: [email protected]• Previous CraftLit Classics can be found here: https://bit.ly/craftlit-library-2023*SUPPORT THE SHOW!*• CraftLit App Premium feed bit.ly/libsynpremiumcraftlit (only one tier available)• PATREON: https://patreon.com/craftlit (all tiers, below)——Walter Harright - $5/mo for the same audio as on App——Jane Eyre - $10/mo for even-month Book Parties——Mina Harker - $15/mo for odd-month Watch Parties*All tiers and benefits are also available as*—*YouTube Channel Memberships*—*Ko-Fi* https://ko-fi.com/craftlit—*NEW* at CraftLit.com — Premium Memberships https://craftlit.com/membership-levels/*IF you want to join a particular Book or Watch Patry but you don't want to join any of the above membership options*, please use PayPal.me/craftlit or CraftLit @ Venmo and include what you want to attend in the message field. SEND US YOUR CRAFTY VIDEOSGeorge Herbert's poetry often draws on the natural world, gardens, and quiet reflection:1. "The Flower"Theme: Renewal, the seasons of the soul, joy in growth Perfect for July because: It celebrates the resurgence of beauty and hope—after cold or darkness, flowers bloom again."Grief melts awayLike snow in May, As if there were no such cold thing.""Who would have thought my shriveled heartCould have recovered greenness? It was gone Quite underground; as flowers depart To see their mother-root, when they have blown.""Thy garden is not bare; And I shall find once more The sweet communion with thy saints."2. "Easter"Yes, it's tied to the holiday, but it also celebrates light and blooming."Rise heart; thy Lord is risen. Sing his praiseWithout delays, Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise With him mayst rise."Pair this with literal rising things—morning sun, lilies, tall foxgloves.3. "The Pulley"Theme: Why God withholds perfect rest—so we seek Him. This works well in summer, when life feels abundant, but still leaves a twinge of longing."When God at first made man,Having a glass of blessings standing by…" (and yet withheld rest, to draw man's soul back to God)A beautiful idea for a reflective pause among too-perfect blooms.4. "Love (III)"Theme: Divine love, human unworthiness, and acceptance It's more theological, but gentle and moving—great for a quiet bench moment in a shady corner."Love bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back…""You must sit down," says Love, "and taste my meat." So I did sit and eat."It pairs beautifully with the hum of bees and the hospitality of a garden. If you want a very short quote for your garden journal or bench-musing: • "Thou hast given me this herb of grace to smell and taste." — from "Grace" • "Sweet rose, whose hue angry and brave…" — from "Virtue" • "He that in mirth and youthful jollity keeps measure, is more temperate than he that lets his sorrow flow out without check." — from his prose The Country Parson*CraftLit's Socials*• Find everything here: https://www.linktr.ee/craftlitchannel• Join the newsletter: http://eepurl.com/2raf9• Podcast site: http://craftlit.com• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CraftLit/• Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/craftlit• Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/craftlit/• TikTok podcast: https://www.tiktok.com/@craftlit• Email: [email protected]• Previous CraftLit Classics can be found here: https://bit.ly/craftlit-library-2023*SUPPORT THE SHOW!*• CraftLit App Premium feed bit.ly/libsynpremiumcraftlit (only one tier available)• PATREON: https://patreon.com/craftlit (all tiers, below)——Walter Harright - $5/mo for the same audio as on App——Jane Eyre - $10/mo for even-month Book Parties——Mina Harker - $15/mo for odd-month Watch Parties*All tiers and benefits are also available as*—*YouTube Channel Memberships*—*Ko-Fi* https://ko-fi.com/craftlit—*NEW* at CraftLit.com — Premium Memberships https://craftlit.com/membership-levels/*IF you want to join a particular Book or Watch Patry but you don't want to join any of the above membership options*, please use PayPal.me/craftlit or CraftLit @ Venmo and include what you want to attend in the message field. To the displeasure of many a maiden, its enjoyment is short lived. Once satisfied, it ceases to exist, and always costs dearly.Another moral: Apply logic to this grim story, and you will ascertain that it took place many years ago. No husband of our age would be so terrible as to demand the impossible of his wife, nor would he be such a jealous malcontent. For, whatever the color of her husband's beard, the wife of today will let him know who the master is. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to be widely popular. Born in Portsmouth, England, Dickens left school to work in a factory after his father was thrown into debtors' prison. Although he had little formal education, his early impoverishment drove him to succeed. Over his career he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas and hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.Read by: Bob NeufeldSt. Nicholas 05:02 (fireside) http://www.archive.org/download/firesidechristmasstories_1312_librivox/firesidechristmas_09_stnicholas_algerjr_ccs_128kb.mp3Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty.Read by: Claudia SaltoThe House of the Seven Santas (1908)John Kendrick Bangs (May 27, 1862 – January 21, 1922) was an American author, editor and satirist.Read by: David WalesChristmas SermonRobert Louis Stephenson (13 November 1850 – 3 December 1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. It is now more commonly known as puerperal sepsis or postpartum sepsis. This condition is an infection that occurs after childbirth. In the past, it was a major cause of maternal deaths related to childbirth, especially before modern hygiene practices and antibiotics became available.Global Situation Today:- Maternal sepsis remains a serious issue and is still a significant cause of maternal deaths around the world.- The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that maternal sepsis accounts for about 10% of all maternal deaths globally. It tends to be more common in areas where many births happen at home, there are not enough skilled healthcare workers, and healthcare systems are weak.Historical Background:During Wollstonecraft's time, doctors often worked in unhygienic environments and did not yet understand germs. Consequently, infections after childbirth were sadly common and often turned deadly.- Peer Reviewed Journal Articles on Placental Sepsis: Cambridge: https://bit.ly/4f3Absz; AIMDR: https://bit.ly/4gicca2; Incidences of: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6903710/-Trigger Warning: Details on MW's death: bit.ly/craftlit-MWs-death
