In today’s episode, we continue to Kershia Mvundura, CCCD Programme Officer highlights what the organisation is doing to end the problem of drug abuse. Zimbabwe is witnessing an unprecedented increase in drug use among its domestic population. Young women and girls are reported to be among the most vulnerable section of the population, as they are tempted to use drugs as an escape from life’s troubles.

Young women and girls are reported to be among the most vulnerable section of the population, as they are tempted to use drugs as an escape from life’s troubles.  The substances that are most commonly used in Zimbabwe include alcohol, cannabis, heroin, glue and cough mixtures such as histalix and bron clear.  Cannabis (mbanje) remains the most popular illicit drug because it is grown locally or smuggled in from neighbouring countries like Malawi and Mozambique.

In this episode we amplify voices of women and girls who continue to experience challenges because of menstruation. The situation is worse in rural areas where women and girl’s activities and mobility are restricted or constricted during the time of their menstrual cycle. 

Menstrual Hygiene Day: In Zimbabwe, many women and girls are stigmatised, excluded and discriminated against simply because they menstruate. It is not acceptable that because of a natural bodily function women and girls continue to be prevented from getting an education, earning an income and fully and equally participating in everyday life. The Creative Centre for Communication and Development is working with young women and girls to amplify their voices and raise awareness about the challenges regarding access to menstrual products, education about menstruation and period-friendly sanitation facilities.

In this episode, we talk to a social worker who works with marginalised and vulnerable women, including women with disabilities. Women with disabilities in Zimbabwe face daily struggles to access homes, offices, health facilities because most buildings were constructed without consideration for the accessibility needs of people with disabilities and their families. 

ntra-familial sexual abuse is sexual abuse perpetrated by a relative or close family member. In this form of abuse, a family member involves a child in (or exposes a child to) sexual behaviors or activities. The “family member” may not be a blood relative, but could be someone who is considered “part of the family,”   A child who has been abused by a close family member lose trust in everyone. Knowing that the abuser is liked—or even loved—by other family members makes it all the more difficult for the abused child to tell others about the abuse. A child who has been abused by a family member is more likely to blame herself or himself for the abuse than those who are abused by someone outside the family unit. This is particularly true of older children, who may be all too aware of the effect that disclosing the abuse will have on other family members.  In today’s episode, we talk to you young woman who, at the age of 16 was indecently assaulted by her uncle. For many years, the uncle pestered the girl to engage in sex and would send inappropriate and indecent messages to her

In this episode we highlight the problem of Gender Based Violence in Zimbabwe. Cases of Gender Based Violence continue to escalate and many women and girls are losing the lives and livelihoods as a result of Gender Based Violence. We talk to Charity, a home based care nurse who has worked with survivors of Gender Based Violence. Charity has also experienced Gender Based Violence. Today she will share with us how she survived the violence and also share what is doing to support other women. 

 In this episode we highlight the problem of breast cancer in Zimbabwe. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the country. Breast cancer patients face social and economic difficulties in accessing care, including significant delays, and public systems are often stretched both financially and logistically. We talk to a caregiver who has cared for some patients with breast cancer and some other terminal illnesses to find out how breast cancer is affecting women. 

In this episode we want to look at one issue that is affecting Bulawayo’s peri-urban dwellers. The issue of Identity documents such as birth certificates and national Identity cards. Areas such as St Peters and Methodist villages on the outskirts of Bulawayo metropolitan province have a high number of people who do not have identity documents. Sithembinkosi, a development worker who has worked with these communities gives more insight into the issue. worker.

In this podcast today, we continue to talk to women have been subjected to sexual abuse at workplaces including female students who have abused while they were looking for work or industrial attachment. We talk to Bekezela, a student at a local university who says she went through a difficult time because of some senior employees who were coercing her into sexual relationships.

As we commemorate the Women's Month we want to highlight some of the experiences that women and girls in Zimbabwe go through. This episode is a follow-up to our previous episode where we highlighted the prevalence of sexual exploitation of young girls in tertiary institutions. CCCD is working with young women to raise awareness on the physical and psychological impact of this form of abuse and mobilise girls to take action towards ending the abuse.
