On Wednesday, June 17, 2015, Officer Danielle Peterson breaks down the front door of a house on quiet Lundy Street in the fancy North Arts District of Columbus, Ohio. The co-workers of David Thomas Brown, 56, said the man had not reported to work since the previous week, and they were worried something had happened to him.So as Officer Peterson performed a welfare check that morning, she did, indeed, find David. He was inside a basement bedroom -- with two missing women, college students from nearby Ohio State University.Police were able to piece together the clues quickly and learn that David was not just a mild mannered health care worker in Columbus. Crime Adjacent Live Episode 583: The Ridge Hollow files

It was late at night on July 5, 2019, when the phone suddenly rang in the empty Ridge Hollow Recorder newspaper in Ridge Hollow, Colorado.Reporter Penny C. Johnson casually answered the phone, thinking it was a caller perhaps angered over a typo -- that happened with surprising frequency. This late night phone call was anything but ordinary. It was a watershed moment. It was the moment Johnson first heard of a sex trafficking operation that had operated in this tiny southern Colorado town for quite literally decades, involving the most powerful townspeople. This episode of Crime Adjacent recounts the week-long newspaper series Johnson was able to piece together following this phone call -- a series that revealed cover-ups, conspiracies, and at least one a murder. And what's worse, this case is still ongoing. As of 2026, there are allegation that the powerful men in this forgotten town are doing everything they can to keep the one person who knows all of their secrets from testifying. I guarantee you, this case will shock and enrage you. This is Crime Adjacent episode 583: The Ridge Hollow files, told live in Los Angeles during our tour.OK, profilers. On the morning of Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, the body of 17-year-old Samantha Carpenter was discovered in the kitchen of a popular sandwich shop in Fairfield, California. She had been hit on the back of the head, and then stabbed. Her jeans were discovered around her ankles, and her green sandwich shop apron was pulled over her head, concealing her face. This was, quite obviously, a murder. Police even discovered the murder weapon on scene. But you’re about to hear why this case has been the source of endless conspiracy theories and cover-up allegations in this small Bay Area town, because those weapons ... they were never tested for prints. And Samantha’s body ... was never tested for DNA.Samantha Carpenter, Sam, was a bright, studious, hard-working high schooler with plans to leave this small town behind for good that year. Why?Because the people she was supposed to be able to count on most might also be the very people responsible for her murder. This is Crime Adjacent episode 580: The Fairfield Sandwich Shop Murder, told live in Memphis during our tour.OK, profilers. Crime Adjacent Live Episode 579: The Cross Country Killer

On November 23, 1987, Bernard "Barnie" Jones arrives home from a business trip and tells his wife he feels "heavy" after a long flight and stress. The next morning, she finds him dead of an apparent heart attack.By all accounts, this looks like a small, ordinary tragedy, the kind that plays out in homes across America every day. But a year later, another man arrives home from a trip, reports that he feels "heavy," and is also found dead of a heart attack within hours. And then another man. And another. And another. These men lived a country apart from one another. They didn't know each other, or have any interactions or connections in any way. They simply arrived home, reported that they felt "heavy," and died of seemingly natural causes.Which is why it took nearly 10 years and a random, off-hand comment for the FBI to discover that these were not, in fact, ordinary health events. These were murders, and what they discovered would shock them.Because from 1987 to 1995, a serial killer quietly murdered at least 12 business travelers throughout America -- and almost got away with it.This is Crime Adjacent episode 579: The case of the Cross Country Killer, told live in Austin during our tour.OK, profilers. Deputy Swanson immediately recognized a victim of sextortion when she saw high school senior Emily Willis trudging fearfully through town. The FBI reports that more than 7,000 cases of sextortion happen every year, when blackmailers start up fake relationships with minors to get incriminating materials they can then use to blackmail those minors. Swanson, who had worked with the FBI, recognized the signs and she immediately rushed into action. But she didn't just stop Emily Willis and let her know that help was available. Swanson enlisted the high schooler's help and together, they would take down the cyber criminal who had been menacing the town for the entire year. This is part 22 of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? Blackmail

High school senior Emily Willis said her best friend, Dorian Block, was the happiest, most cheerful person she had ever met. They'd known each other since before kindergarten and were about to graduate this year from high school and go on to college together. But one day, in early September 2024, Dorian began acting very, very strangely. Like she was scared of something, or someone.Within hours, Dorian would be dead, and Emily, just a few weeks later, would find herself in the exact same situation.Because it wasn't just something that scared Dorian. It was, indeed, someone. And that someone had now turned his attention to Emily. This is part 21 of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? Theory of the case

Sheriff Press had a grand theory about the ultimate suspect in this case. She put it all together when she noticed a pattern. All of the women who were assaulted were out-of-town visitors. But all of the women who were murdered had something in common. They were Realtors. And there was only one man in town with a grudge against Realtors. Was he behind all this? The only problem was ... this guy had been murdered as well. This is part 20 of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? Northern Michigan lake country had seen a murder in years. And then all of a sudden there are four, in just two days?It didn't make sense to Sheriff Press. How serial killers get their names

The same thing that happened in California, in the 1980s, happened in Northern Michigan. Residents wondered: What do we call this guy?In the beginning, he broke into cabins and rubbed women's feet while wearing a creepy Halloween clown mask. So he became known as the Clown Creeper. But when he started to murder people, a new name emerged: the Nightstalker. Specifically, the Michigan Nightstalker, to distinguish him from two different serial killers operating in California who were both called the Nightstalker.Whatever people called him, Sheriff Press knew she had to catch him, fast. A huge mistake

We had to get ahead of this guy. A loud clue

Just a few blocks from the Clinton Street house where Allison Barnes was murdered that Saturday, Realtor Ebony Aster was hosting her own open house on Lake Street. But while she was getting ready, she heard something. Upstairs. That strange noise soon turned to pounding footsteps, and she knew, immediately, she had to get out of the house. Fast.It turns out, these type of attacks on Realtors happen all the time. In Florida, from 2024 to 2025, a man would check out open homes hosted by women Realtors, and then, when they were alone, he would try to grab their feet.Ebony was thinking about assaults like these, wondering who was upstairs. A timeline for murder

Can you kill a person in five minutes? And then appear perfectly reasonable when the cops arrive? These questions were floating through Sheriff Press's mind as she questioned Billy Barnes, who had just discovered his wife had been murdered. Why, Press wondered, did it take him five whole minutes from the alleged discovery of her body until the time he called 911?The more she dug into the story of Billy and Allison Barnes, the more she discovered reason after reason about why he might have killed her. And she wondered, was this the case of a local foot fetish creep escalating to murder, or yet one more horrible example of an enraged husband taking his anger out on the supposed "love of his life"?This is part 12 of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? Do you know about those fancy shoes with the red soles? How about that brand with the plaid design crawling over coats and purses? What does a belt with "G" on it denote, or "H"?In the field of conspicuous consumption, these are what sociologists call loud signals of wealth. But there are quiet signals as well, signals so subtle and obscure as to be noticed only by the truly, impossibly rich -- those who don't even need fancy brands to signal their wealth. So what does this have to do with murder? A prelude to murder

Beginning in January 2024, the town began experiencing an odd but noticeable rash in crime. The high school science teacher suddenly began sending people nudes. The school principal was arrested for embezzlement. The bookstore owner also sent nudes. A cafe worker was charged with felony assault for beating up a high school football player. The town's biggest problems were bar fights and traffic tickets. But now, everyday citizens suddenly went on unusual crime sprees. And one person, who moved to town in January, long before the clown creeping even began, appeared on the periphery in each case. Over and over again, this one name in particular popped up.And it popped up again in the clown creeper cases in September 2024, when he was arrested right outside the cabin of Claire Gasley. This is part four of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? It appeared as if this case would be solved in mere hours. And then investigators discovered something else about these cameras, something that would turn this case upside down and begin to answer questions about why the small town began experiencing big crimes. This is part three of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? Clowns and crime: Why do they scare us?

Clowns are supposed to be happy, entertaining figures. And yet, they factor into true crime cases all the time -- from bank robberies to burglaries to serial killers. As more break ins and foot rubs were tied to this case, we take a look at why clowns have such a fascinating -- and terrifying -- hold on us. And we also discover something shocking inside the cabin of one victim.Someone had recorded the whole thing. This is part two of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? A break in on Walloon Lake

Early in the morning on Sept. 26, 2024, a man in a Halloween clown mask broke into the cabin of a single, vacationing woman in Northern Michigan. He bagged all her shoes. Watched her sleep for an unknown period of time. And then crept to the foot of her bed, where he gently lifted the covers and massaged her feet.Night after night, cabin after cabin, the man prowled the quiet vacationland of Walloon Lake. It started with break ins and foot rubs. And soon, it escalated, with murders stretching from Petoskey to Traverse City. This is part one of a new season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? The Rest Stop Killer

In the annals of true crime lore and media representations, serial killers are far too often held up as loner geniuses and masterminds. But the truth is, for the most part, these guys are morons -- usually psychopathic, narcissistic idiots who are, ultimately, done in by their own stupidity and hubris. Ted Bundy couldn't help but steal the same type of car. The Son of Sam got parking tickets and returned to the scenes of his crimes. The BTK Killer trusted cops and basically sent in his own confession letter. And in Ridgewood, in 2023, the Rest Stop Killer couldn't stop putting up signposts that would, in the end, lead to their capture. This is the story of The Rest Stop Killer's capture. What happens if your favorite character jumps off the page and starts a podcast? That’s Crime Adjacent, the never-ending true crime thriller told weekly. With the help of devoted listeners and true crime fans, the international #1 smash hit Crime Adjacent podcast team has already captured the Bay Area's Rest Stop Killer in 2023, stopped the Mercy Street Butcher in 2019, and exposed the AmaniCorp conspiracy in 2024.But the darkest chapter awaits and comes to you live, each Wednesday, beginning Nov. 26, 2025. In Season 8, host and serial killer survivor Chase Patrick investigates the Michigan Nightstalker, who in September 2024 broke into the cabins of single, vacationing women late at night to rub their feet. All of the victims were found on his property, either in the valley or at his home or at his officeWhen Bea Macy, the final known victim of the Rest Stop Killer, was discovered outside of his downtown headquarters building on Dec. 16, 2023, there was a literal trail of blood leading directly to his office.Ridgewood police had seen enough. Coming soon: The Michigan Nightstalker

On a quiet lake in Northern Michigan, in the early morning hours of September 26, 2024, a man in a long tan coat and a Halloween clown mask broke into the cabin of a single, vacationing woman named Claire Gasley. First, he bagged up her shoes and socks. Then, he crept to the foot of her bed, slipped his hands under the covers, and … massaged her feet.Michigan is practically a breeding ground for serial killers. The Ypsilanti Ripper. The Sunday Morning Slasher. The Oakland County Child Killer. The North Fox Island pedophile ring—a dark foreshadowing of Epstein’s island. But nothing compares to what happened on Walloon Lake in September 2024.While the locals called him the Walloon Lake Clown Creeper, the man in a clown mask with an incurable foot fetish soon had a different name that shocked the entire state — because it all went from creepy to deadly in the span of days, with murders stretching from Petoskey to Traverse City and beyond. This is the story of the Michigan Nightstalker. And this season of Crime Adjacent explores how a rookie sheriff’s deputy uncovered a deadly conspiracy that turned this vacation wonderland upside down.Imagine what happens if your favorite character from your favorite true crime, mystery thriller leaps off the page and starts a podcast. Serial killer souvenirs

Ed Gein took skin. BTK took jewelry and trinkets. The Zodiac took pieces of a bloody shirt. In Ridgewood, police knew exactly what the Rest Stop Killer took from each victim. And somehow, they managed to keep this a secret for decades, knowing these souvenirs provided the only link between each murder. If police could find these tokens, they'd find their suspect. On Dec. 16, 2023, on the night City Councilwoman Bea Macy was abducted, they finally found the tokens -- which meant, they also found the Rest Stop Killer. It was the last person anyone suspected. This is the story of the final night in the Rest Stop Killer saga.Imagine what happens if your favorite character from your favorite true crime, mystery thriller leaps off the page and starts a podcast. The Ridgewood City Council murders

In the winter of 2023, three city councilmembers from the city of Ridgewood were abducted. One, Gary Pugh, was murdered, his body dumped in a valley on the outskirts of town -- the exact same location used by the Rest Stop Killer. The two others, Margie Miller and Bea Macy, were brutally assaulted but, somehow, survived. To figure out what happened and to better understand how the Rest Stop Killer played a role in these cases, the city council commissioned an independent report. What it uncovered stunned the town but also provided the answers to a question haunting everyone for years: How could the most prolific serial killer in American history live there undetected for decades? What's Crime Adjacent all about? Bea Macy

Bea Macy was born in a small town in Wisconsin but, just like Len Macy, she made her way to Ridgewood in a roundabout fashion following the Summer of Love. She remained in town until the very end.In the 1960s, she escaped the doomed cult in the valley outside of town, grabbing on to a secretarial job at City Hall. There, she learned the ins and outs of Ridgewood. In the 1980s, she ran for school board, and then for City Council. The annual Christmas parade and Santa greeting was her idea. She fought tooth and nail to preserve the valley from development. People loved her.On Dec. 16, 2023, Bea Macy would become the last known victim of the Rest Stop Killer. Parking lots

There’s something undeniably eerie about a parking lot. The rows of silent cars, or worse, the vast swaths of empty space. The distant echo of footsteps. The half-burnt yellow lights casting shadows across the gritty pavement. Parking lots are liminal spaces — they’re designed for movement, for transitioning from the safety of cars to the safety of places. But for many - especially women - parking lots aren’t just transitional spaces. They’ve become cultural touchstones of heightened fear. Indeed, parking lots have become gendered terrains. Places where women and children are taken, where sex traffickers and kidnappers prowl, hunting for new victims. In this episode, we examine the conspiracy theories surrounding parking lots and how they collide with reality. Because it was in a parking lot, under police protection even, where the final victim in this case was abducted on Dec. 16, 2023.What's Crime Adjacent all about? Over the span of a week in December 2023, two Ridgewood city council members were abducted and assaulted. One, Gary Pugh, had been murdered. The other, Margie Miller, managed to survive somehow, but the prognosis did not look good. She was abducted on Friday night, Dec. 15, 2023, and by the following morning, Saturday, she would be in the hospital, fighting for her life. No one knew it at the time, of course, but by that Saturday morning, the killer already had their eye on the next and final victim in this case, which would unravel that very night, in that very hospital.Imagine what happens if your favorite character from your favorite mystery thriller leaps off the page and starts a podcast. Tokens

True crime is littered with cases of killers who tied to throw investigators off their tracks. These cases are also littered with the tiny, dumb mistakes these killers made that ultimately led to their demise. The out of place pizza box. The tiny trace of DNA. The wild story of a late-night trip through a blizzard that was most definitely not an impromptu alibi attempt.Which is all to say, true crime has grown accustomed to bizarre cases like these and the strange, unbelievable stories murderers come up with to throw police off the track. But Detective Jones and Chief Williams both agreed: Detectives are not born yesterday. They, too, studied these cases. They knew all the ways killers try to elude capture. And they knew almost from the start. Fraud

On Dec. 13, 2023, Ridgewood resident Mollie Miller came to one of the Crime Adjacent live shows in San Francisco. She had a message for us: The Rest Stop Killer had returned to Ridgewood. But more than that, she knew exactly who the killer was.So why, then, when I returned to Ridgewood to investigate, did I find her in her main suspect's home?I needed answers. Rehearsal Fantasy

True Crime stories are riddled with serial killers and their crimes. But how do they get started? From BTK to The Nightstalker to the Rest Stop Killer, many serial killers begin with what forensic psychologists call rehearsal fantasy. That's the term for the young teen or young man outside, in the bushes, watching. Eventually, for some, these voyeuristic, Peeping Tom fantasies evolve into something far, far worse -- like break ins and eventually physical violence.I couldn't help thinking of that term and all those killers, because wasn't I doing the exact same thing? I headed to the Palmer house on Friday night, hoping to find some answers. But I soon found myself outside, in the bushes, watching ... peeping. And what I discovered turned this case upside down.Crime Adjacent is the never-ending true crime thriller told weekly. New episodes every Wednesday.Weekly BTS info and profiling group at Patreon -- http://www.patreon.com/crimeadjacent Instagram -- https://www.instagram.com/crimeadjacentWeb site -- www.crimeadjacent.comCrime Adjacent is produced & edited by Multitude.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

    Margie Miller

Margie Miller spent her life trying to escape Ridgewood. But a series of unfortunate events always pulled her back home, and right back into the heart of this case.At 18, she was accepted into the University of Chicago, but her family just couldn't afford it, and so she stayed home. At 22, she was offered a job in San Francisco, but her father suddenly died and she remained home to help her mother. After a few years, she was offered another job, a dream job in the history department of the University of San Francisco, but then she met Bob Miller. He was new to town. And unlike every other man in Ridgewood, he liked her. They married, had a daughter, and settled in Ridgewood. When Bob died in 2023, Margie saw her chance. By December of that year, she had put the house on the market and was packing up, looking at senior communities in Napa and Fairfield. This was, finally, her chance to escape Ridgewood once and for all.Margie Miller was abducted just a block from her home on Dec. 15, 2023, and her body was discovered just hours later in the valley. On Sept. 27, 1969, the Zodiac killer donned a black hood and approached a young couple on the shores of Lake Berryessa — just a few miles north of Ridgewood.Once he tied up the couple, he stabbed them mercilessly. I told you the Zodiac kept appearing in strange ways in the case of the Rest Stop Killer, and it happened again here, at Lake Berryessa. Because this exact spot where the Zodiac struck back in 1969 -- it was the exact same location where the body of Michelle Diaz was discovered by hikers in 2023.Crime Adjacent is the never-ending true crime thriller told weekly. New episodes every Wednesday.Weekly BTS info and profiling group at Patreon -- http://www.patreon.com/crimeadjacent Instagram -- https://www.instagram.com/crimeadjacentWeb site -- www.crimeadjacent.comCrime Adjacent is produced & edited by Multitude.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The disappearance of Michelle Diaz happened at the worst possible time in a small town with limited resources and in a media environment desperate for information about a different case altogether. So although her death would eventually lead to uncovering the true volume of horror committed by the Rest Stop Killer, she would, sadly, become a footnote in the larger story. Michelle Diaz was anything but a footnote to her family and those who loved her most. This is her story.Crime Adjacent is the never-ending true crime thriller told weekly. New episodes every Wednesday.Weekly BTS info and profiling group at Patreon -- http://www.patreon.com/crimeadjacent Instagram -- https://www.instagram.com/crimeadjacentWeb site -- www.crimeadjacent.comCrime Adjacent is produced & edited by Multitude.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
