Dad the Man

Do you have the skills you need to love and lead your family from the front? My name is Brendan Wall. I am a father of four and married to my best friend. I started this podcast not because I have all the answers, but because I am in search of them. We have one opportunity to be the best men, husbands, and fathers that we can be, and I plan to seize it.At DAD THE MAN we interview guys we all know and admire professionally, but more importantly, are setting the tone for what a great man, husband, and father looks like. Guys who seize the opportunity before them to love and lead their families from the front, from a place of opportunity not obligation. This is Dad the Man. This is who we all aspire to become. Every single week, you can expect to hear from household names like JORDAN SPIETH, TIM KENNEDY, ERIC DECKER, SEAN LOWE, STIPE MIOCIC, DAVID MELTZER, DR MICHAEL GERVAIS, STAN EFFERDING, MARK BELL, DREW MANNING, DR JOSH AXE, DR JOHN DELONY, ROBB WOLF, JASON KHALIPA, TODD ABRAMS, LEW

Lee has a pretty amazing story.. from the University of Tennessee to Marshall to a long NFL career, and what I love most about him and his story (the part of the conversation that God needed me to hear) is that Lee has always done things “his own way” - as the world might say, but in reality its the way that the Lord has led him. People have called him crazy, ut he isn’t worried about what people think. He’s worried about what God thinks. This idea is weaved through this entire conversation today, nd I’m so excited to share it with you. God spoke to me through this conversation and I pray that he’ll do the same for you today as you listen.

    138 | 3 Pillars of Youth Sports

Only 3 things matter in youth sportsLove of the gameCharacter developmentSkill progression... in that order ..Sport is an undeniably great medium to inject life lessons into our kidsThe lessons I learned playing sports as a kid laid a foundation for the character I carry today as a 32 year old man. I am beyond grateful to have had parents who “got it” and optimized my experience for character development above all else.I’m striving to give the same to my kid - and I want to help you do the same.Unfortunately, 80% of kids who play sports quit by age 12..robbing them of the opportunity to continue playing a game they once lovedand to further build their character through it.My goal is for us to fix this issue moving forward. In youth sports, only 3 things matter (in this order!): Love of the GameCharacter DevelopmentSkill ProgressionFollow me on this….If we make sports fun..they maintain and grow their love of the gamethey want to playthey want to practicethey practice on their own in the back yardthey're engagedmeaning they actually care when coach talksbecause they care about the game and want to get betterso they listen to the character development stuffwe teach them about how to work hardhow to practice hardhow to be a great team matehow to respond to adversity and failurehow to compete and winwhich makes it more fun, by the way,and because they're having funand they want to come backand they understand how to work hardand how to practice hardand how to work as a teamand how to competeAad how to learn from mistakesthen the output of all of thatIs them getting better at the game!and then…THIS IS THE MAGIC PART RIGHT HEREas they get better at the gamethe game becomes more funbecause everything is more fun when you get better at itand because they’re having more funthey play longerproviding more opportunity to build characterwhich ultimately makes them better at the gameand the cycle continues….… it’s a beautifully vicious cycleand it’s my mini manifesto on sports. In today’s episode I go deep on this!!

118 | DANIEL CARLSON - Kicking in the NFL with Kids, Leading a Family Through Faith, and the Real Goal of Raising Kids

Daniel Carlson is the starting kicker for the Las Vegas Raiders. Daniel kicked at my alma matter, Auburn University for four straight years, where he had a tremendous career and became the SEC's all time leading scorer. He was selected in the fifth round by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 NFL draft, but after a rough game  in Minnesota, Carlson was cut and was picked up by the Las Vegas Raiders where he's been ever since. He has been the NFL's leading scorer In two of the last three seasons, and just last year he signed a big contract extension locking him in with the Raiders for the next four years. I really enjoyed hearing his perspective on the uncertain times in his career as a newly married man and the significance of the stability provided by a four year contract as a father of one with number two on the way. As an Auburn guy I've rooted for Daniel throughout his entire career, and after getting to chat with him it only reinforced my perception of him as a strong, humble dude with a calm confidence about him. There is nothing to not like about this guy. On the field he has ice in his veins. He's as clutch as they come. Off the field he lives a life deeply rooted in faith and devoted to his young and growing family. But above it all he's an incredible man, husband, and father, and I'm pumped I had the opportunity to chat with him.DISCUSSION POINTSChildhood in Colorado Springs, CORaised by Alabama fans, played at AuburnSpent one year of his childhood in SwedenHow Daniel got into playing footballThe marriage fast trackUncertainty after getting cutStability of a four year contract as a younger dadPlaying in the NFL with a newborn baby at homeGame winning field goal --> birth of first babyCompartmentalizing kicking in the NFL vs home lifeBringing in baby number twoBest marriage advice from DCWhat Daniel struggles withWhat Daniel is the most proud ofWhat Daniel wants his legacy to be with his kidsLINKSIG: @danielcarlson38

Before joining Ramsey Solutions in 2020, John worked as a senior leader, professor, and researcher at multiple universities. He spent two decades in crisis response, walking with people through severe trauma. Now as a Ramsey Personality, he teaches on relationships, mental health, and wellness as the host of his caller-driven radio show the Dr. John Delony show. John is the author of Redefining Anxiety which I highly recommend as a quick and impactful read for anyone who has experienced anxiety. Today is also a BIG day for John because it's officially release day for his second book titled "Own Your Past, Change Your Future." In our conversation today I misread the title of his book which is pretty embarrassing but thankfully John was super cool about it. Jason is an American former Crossfit Games athlete, who made 8 consecutive appearances and the games and is known for his win as the 2008 CrossFit Games champions and other notable finishes in second place in 2013 and third place in 2014. He also won the Spirit of the Games award in 2009, which is an award given to the CrossFit gamesathlete who exemplifies extraordinary character and inspires those watching to face their biggest challenges with resilience, grace, and kindness. In 2016, Jason's daughter Ava was diagnosed with Luekemia which led him to stepping away from competing in the games. Since his days competing in the CrossFit Games, Jason has spent his professional time building his fitness business, NCFit Gyms and the NCFit Collective. He is also the host of his own wildly popular podcast call Effort Over Everything. Jason is also known for the book he wrote titled "As Many Reps as Possible." This book serves as a framework to being more present, living more intentionally, and accomplishing more in life. Not in a hypothetical, mushy way, but in a practical, real way. "As Many Reps as Possible" or "AMRAP" in the CrossFit community is an approach I've adopted in my own life and in today's conversation we talk a lot about how to apply this framework in our roles as leaders of our families. Jason is a hyper present, hyper focused guy, and after speaking with him, its no surprise to me that he was able earn the fittest man on earth while also accomplishing what he's accomplished in business so far all while keeping his family as his number one priority. 109 | ROBB WOLF - Simple Rules for Family Nutrition, Courage to Stand for Your Beliefs, and Your Obligation as a Parent to Provide Healthy Food Options

Robb Wolf is a former research biochemist and is the 2x NYT bestselling author of The Paleo Solution and Wired to Eat. Robb has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people around the world via is top ranked podcast called The Healthy Rebellion, books, seminars, and products. Robb has functioned as a review editor for the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism and as a consultant for the Naval Special Warfare Resiliency Program, and he serves on the board of directors of many innovative start ups with a focus on health and sustainability. Along with being a true pioneer in both the Crossfit and Paleo movements, Robb holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and is a former California state powerlifting champion. Robb has provided seminars in nutrition and strength & conditioning to a number of big time entities including NASA, Naval Special Warfare, the Canadian Light Infantry, and the United States Marine Corps. More recently, Robb wrote a book titled Sacred Cow which also was produced as a documentary which you've probably seen advertised on Netflix. Robb is also the cofounder of the exploding electrolyte brand called LMNT, which I absolutely love. When I originally scheduled my conversation with Robb, he sent me a huge box of LMNT which I thought was such a cool gesture, and after drinking it for a few days Im now absolutely hooked. I have no affiliation with LMNT and get no kickback from them and I'm very hesitant to suggest or recommend supplements, but LMNT is one that I really love and has become a staple in my daily routine. And if you don't know Robb from any of the things I've already mentioned, then maybe you recognize him as a former guest on ultra popular podcasts like The Joe Rogan Experience, Ben Greenfield Fitness, Cleared Hot, Mark Bells Power Project, The Doctors Pharmacy, and many many more. If you can't tell, Robb is a guy who does a lot. He's brilliant, articulate, and unapologetically rational, refusing to let politics or other ulterior motives manipulate his conclusions but above it all Robb is an incredible man, husband, and father, and I am so excited to share this conversation with him.Discussion PointsWhat in the world does Robb Wolf do?How Robb became the defender of all things meatThe sustainability argument for meat consumptionWhy Robb is so passionate about defending meat consumptionResponsibility of parents to serve their kids nutritional foodsSimple rules for family nutritionLong term effects of bad nutrition in kidsProviding good nutritional options for kidsHow to shop at the grocery storeIs organic meat worth it??What Robb is the most proud ofWhat Robb struggles with personallyWhat Robb wants his legacy to be with his kidsLinkswww.robbwolf.comwww.drinklmnt.com

JOIN THE DAD THE MAN FACEBOOK GROUP --> CLICK HERE <-- or visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/dadthemanBrian Nabavi is best known as an entrepreneur. He is the founder the Til You Collapse clothing brand. He is the host of the Til You Collapse podcast. He is a mindset, business, and fitness coach, and he does a lot more in business as well. I know he also has a successful CBD brand and is an investor in multiple businesses as well. All of the success he's achieved comes as an extension of being a great husband and dad at home, and he is known by his peers as such. I really enjoy following Brian because of this. He has the business, the success, the cars.. He has all that, but when you listen to him speak, it's apparent that its his family that he's the most proud of. One other thing that I really appreciate about Brian is something that he's actually known for on social media and that is, what has now become a slogan for him, and that is "put your cart back." If you follow him on social media then you know he's always preaching about being a decent human being and putting your shopping cart back when you're done with it. I love this, and I'll echo that message all day long. Put your cart back guys! Be a decent human - come on! Brian is a great dude, and it was really cool to mix it up with him here. I know you'll enjoy this one. Here is my conversation with Brian Nabavi.DISCUSSION POINTSBrian reflects on his childhoodFinding confidence through fitnessThey watch everything you doYou’ll never be readyCapacity expands You actually do have the time The mind and body determine what you’re capable ofPros and cons of social mediaKids absolutely can and should work out and be active Working hard AND smartEntrepreneurship isn’t for everyoneconsumption be production Balancing everything in life Explaining the vision to your kids Prioritizing your kids as an entrepreneurLINKSIG: @briannabaviCompany: www.tilyoucollapse.com

103 | STEVE ECKERT - How to Create Your Ideal Life for You & Your Family, Manufactured Adversity for Kids, How to Make Time for Your Family, and Building Your Next Big Thing

Today's guest is Steve Eckert. Steve is a husband, a dad, a marine, an entrepreneur, and a performance coach among other things. You probably recognize Steve from the clips of him coaching his clients. He has a no nonsense, in your face style, and he isn't afraid to lean into his experience with the Marines in training he clients. This episode has some heavy language in it. This is not the episode to listen to with your kids in the car - just wanted to make sure to mention that. Steve is an example of a guy who lived a problematic childhood and is now hellbent on changing the trajectory of his family lineage. One thing I really appreciate about Steve is how intentional he is with his time. In our conversation we talked about how he plans and schedules to make sure he has the right symmetry, as he calls it, in his life. I also want to note that in this conversation Steve mentions an upcoming challenge that he is doing with his family for the Save Our Allies Foundation, which is headed up by previous guest of the show Tim Kennedy. This is a 24 hour fitness challenge that is upcoming on March 25th, I've posted a link in the show notes for anyone who wants to join and contribute to raising funds for the Save Our Allies Foundation. This conversation is direct, it's honest, and its loaded with takeaways that you can use today to be a better man, husband, and father. Huge shoutout to Steve for making the time to join us today.DISCUSSION POINTSReflecting on an abusive childhoodBuilding confidenceBreaking the cycleOur kids raise us “My kids are my mentors”Are you doing it for your kids or for you? What’s your ideal lifestyle? 097 | KEN RIDEOUT - Raising courageous kids, Mental health, Adoption, and Giving your family the best version of yourself

JOIN THE DAD THE MAN FACEBOOK GROUP --> CLICK HERE <-- or visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/dadthemanToday's guest is none other than Ken Rideout. Ken Rideout has an unbelievable story including a chaotic childhood, working summers as a prison guard, and drug addiction. Through it all, he managed to work his way onto a trading desk on Wall Street where his professional career began and now he has shaped himself into a world class marathon runner. He was actually deemed "World's Best Marathoner over 50" by the NY Times. Ken is a non nonsense, salt of the earth, would do anything for anybody type of guy who leads from the front in every way, every day. Before Ken and I spoke, I felt deeply drawn to him and his story for a few reasons 1) He adopted his oldest daughter and for those of you who may not have followed along here my wife and I recently adopted newborn twins. It was great getting to connect on that experience. 2) In Ken's Wall Street days, he worked for a company called Cantor Fitzgerald Cantor Fitzgeralds headquarters was located in the World Trade center. Ken happened to be in London on September 11, 2001, but he lived through the experience of losing many of his friends and colleagues to the tragedy. My uncle, my dad's younger brother, Glen Wall, also worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. On 9/11 he was at work on the 105th floor of tower 1 and unfortunately did not survive. As you can imagine, 9/11 is a big deal in my family and getting to speak to someone who was basically there for it was a unique experience for me. We spoke at length today about the importance of managing our mental health through physical exercise, and how there's absolutely no excuse not to make time to exercise. We also talked about holding our kids accountable and Ken breaks down the values that he focuses on the most with his four kids. Above it all, Ken is an incredible man, husband, and father, and it was an honor to host him on the show.DISCUSSION POINTSCaring for your own mental healthTreating yourself like someone you’re responsible forMental health and runningLiving a life of serviceIf you aren’t the best version of yourself you’re cheating those around youSeasons in lifeInternational adoptionYou’re only as happy as your saddest kidSupporting your kids emotionally Kindness, confidence, and effortRaising confident kidsAddressing fear with your kidsApologizing to your kidsWhat Ken is the most proud ofWhat Ken wants his legacy to be with his kidsLINKSwww.rideoutstrong.comInstagram: @ken_rideout

After serving with the SEALs, Ray continued to serve his country for eight years as an overseas security officer for government agencies. With his specialized skill set, Ray deployed to remote areas around the world n the continuing efforts in the war against terrorism. As he looked to life beyond the SEAL Teams and CIA, Ray focused his passion and experience on helping others improve their own lives. Along with guys like Bedros Kuellian and Steve Eckert, Ray spends much of his time serving businesses, men, and adolescents through programs like The LDT Project, The Modern Day Knight Project, and the Squire program. Ray has a reputation for being intense, which is understandable, maybe even well earned, but being close enough to him to connect and have a conversation with him, I was able to see that his intensity is an authentic expression, an unbridled enthusiasm for the life itself and his mission to get the best out of others. Ray is a powerhouse and was fun to talk to. I left the conversation inspired and fired up and I think you will too.
