TODAY'S EPISODE: TODAY'S DEVOTION: Reading today's scriptures, we encounter a real tension — a contradiction, actually — in the telling of David's census in 2nd Samuel and 1st Chronicles. On the one hand, we read that God incites David to count the people, while on the other, it's Satan who prompts this act. Some might see this and grow uneasy, wondering if the Bible's trustworthiness is at stake. But the authority and inspiration of Scripture do not rest on it being a flaw-free reference manual. The Bible is doing something deeper, more profound; it is not, first and foremost, a technical record or a divine encyclopedia. The very presence of these apparent contradictions is a signpost that the Bible should be read on its own terms. If we try to explain away every factual inconsistency, we risk missing the greater narrative: the Bible is inviting us into God's living story, a relationship with the God who is love, mercy, and truth. These differing accounts are not weak links to be repaired, but rather an invitation to mature faith — a faith that can sit honestly with the complexity and humanity of God's Word. God's people have always recognized the scriptures as authoritative, not because every detail is seamless, but because the stories, the poems, the letters, and the teachings draw us into the divine life. They reveal what it means to belong to God, to live under his mercy, and to join his story of love. In both accounts of David's census, we are ultimately pointed toward God's mercy. The authors have their own reasons for telling the story as they do, reasons shaped by the needs of their particular communities. Yet together, these voices lead us to the same truth: it is God's mercy that triumphs. Christ is our authority. He authorizes the Bible to tell his story — a story that forms us as a people beloved by God. So read the Bible honestly, unafraid of its tensions and contradictions. Trust the Spirit to use every word, every story — even the complicated ones — to form you in the likeness of Jesus. Let Scripture draw you deeper into love, not into fearful denial or brittle certainty. God's Word is not just information; it is invitation — into community, into relationship, into love. That's my prayer for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife and daughters and son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. Paul was convinced of something profound—that God loved and chose this small community in Thessalonica as his own. And that was no small admission for Paul to make. In his upbringing, Gentiles—those who didn't keep kosher or follow Jewish laws and customs—would never have been seen as loved, let alone chosen. For Paul to declare otherwise, to see and say, "We know…that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people," was a revolution in his heart and mind. It was evidence that he had truly encountered Jesus. That's what happens when we meet Jesus: he transforms the way we see the world, the way we see others—especially those outside our usual circle. We discover that the boundaries of God's love are far wider than we thought. Love isn't limited to our own race, our political party, our theological persuasion, or those who are "like us." No, as we encounter the living Christ, our vision expands. We begin to see people—even those we once considered outsiders—as loved and chosen by God. The message rings out: this love, this choosing, it's not exclusive. It's for the world. The believers in Thessalonica received this good news with joy—even in the midst of suffering. Their encounter with Jesus made them an example, so that the "word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people everywhere." Their lives proclaimed, in word and deed, the broad embrace of God, echoing across borders and backgrounds. Any theology that's empty of a living encounter with Jesus dries up and closes in. It forgets that the gospel isn't just for an "in-group." Jesus opens our eyes, again and again, to see as he sees, to welcome as he welcomes. That's a prayer I have for my own soul today: that the parameters of God's love would keep opening up in my own heart. That I would meet Jesus afresh and let him rearrange my perspective—so that his embrace for the world would be my embrace. That's a prayer for myself, for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son, and it's a prayer I have for you. May we encounter the One who changes everything. May it be so. In today's episode, we journey through King David's grief, political challenges, and restoration, reflect on David's heartfelt cries in the Psalms, and witness the resurrection of Jesus and his message of hope: "Don't be afraid. Go and tell." After hearing these powerful words, we'll spend time in prayer together, seeking courage and focus for the day ahead, and be reminded of God's steadfast love and presence—even to the end of the age. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Don't be afraid. Go and tell. Be sure of this. Those were the words the disciples heard after Jesus was raised from the dead. "Don't be afraid." These are the first words they hear as they approach the empty tomb. There's much to be afraid of when facing such uncertainty, such emptiness—questions without answers, situations that don't seem resolvable. Yet, the word of the risen Lord is, "Don't be afraid." The unanswered questions in your life need not cause you to fear. Why? Because he is with you. Because goodness and mercy are following you all the days of your life. Those first words are followed by a calling: "Go and tell." Go and tell your brothers, your sisters, the whole world, that they, too, need not be afraid. Go and tell them that the story of Jesus is alive and ongoing. That God's love continues on. That our journeys haven't ended—that God is not finished with you yet. There is hope for tomorrow. He is redeeming your past. He is alive today. Go and tell. And as Jesus meets them on the mountain, he gives one more assurance: "Be sure of this. I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Our comfort in uncertainty is his presence. Our calling is to speak hope into the world. The story isn't over. The tomb is empty. Christ is risen. Don't be afraid amid your own uncertainties. Go and tell. Be sure of this—he is with you, and you are loved. That's the prayer I have for my own soul today: that I will live in the light of the hope of the resurrection, listening for his voice, echoing, "Don't be afraid." On the cross, Jesus cried, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?" At first glance, it looks like a moment of utter desolation, as if God the Father has turned away from his Son. Many have taught that in this cry, Jesus is forsaken by the Father, or worse still, that God is punishing the Son. But things are not always as they seem. The early church often saw it differently. Jesus is quoting Psalm 22—a psalm that starts with anguish but ends with trust. Like many of David's psalms, it begins with abandonment but always resolves with confession of God's unfailing presence and faithfulness. As the psalm reaches its end, the psalmist declares, "He did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted. He did not turn his face from me but heard when I cried out to him." In the depths of suffering, God does not hide nor forsake, but listens and draws near. So, what does this mean for us? Jesus, in quoting the psalm, enters fully into the depths of human experience—our betrayals, our loneliness, our feelings of abandonment. He knows them all, tasting them as we do. Yet the profound truth is found not just in the cry, but in the assurance that God is present, even when it seems otherwise. Paul declares in 2 Corinthians 5:19 that on the cross, "God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself." There is no division in the Trinity, no rift between the Father and the Son—not then, not ever. And if God did not abandon Jesus in his most desperate hour, he will not abandon you. He is faithful, and his love endures. Let this truth settle deep into your soul. Trust, as Jesus trusted—even when everything in you wishes to surrender to despair. God's love is steadfast. His presence never leaves. You are never beyond the reach of his care. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. These are the words Jesus speaks to Peter, words that echo through the ages and land gently, honestly, in our own hearts. We long to have a strong will, to stand firm, to remain steadfast, but time and again, we find the flesh faltering. Hunter reminds us that no matter how much we bluster or boast, the flesh on its own cannot shape or sustain the will; it will betray us every time, just as it did Peter—three times, in the moment it mattered most. But notice the beauty of what Jesus does that same night. Three times, while Peter's spirit gives way, Jesus lays down his own will before the Father in prayer—three times, he chooses not his own will, but God's. Where we falter, he is faithful. Where we shrink back, he steps forward in radical self-giving love, empowered not by human determination but by the Spirit. It is this same Spirit that Christ offers to us—a Spirit that can shape our will, align our hearts, and enable us to reflect a radical forgiveness, a radical love, even when it is costly. That is the good news Hunter shares with us today. The abiding and willing Spirit of Christ dwells in you. You are not left to face these struggles alone or to will yourself into God's purposes. By his Spirit, you too can learn the way of self-giving love, molded more and more into the life of Jesus. That is my prayer for my soul today: to abide, to yield, to let Christ's willing Spirit have his way in me. It's the prayer I have for my family. And it's the prayer I have for you. May we abide in Christ and learn his way of love. May it be so. Settle in, open your Bible, and let's discover together what God has for us today. TODAY'S DEVOTION: This is a parable. It's important to know what we are reading. A parable is typically teaching us something about the nature of reality. Stories peel back what's under the surface. And in this case, Jesus is using a story to peel back a form of religion that is profoundly misguided. It has missed the point that our life in God is a life of love and will find its expression in the way we see all people, even those outside of our group, even those who are unseen by all groups. The religious culture of his day was preoccupied with a lot of things that had the appearance of piety and orthodoxy. A lot was being said about God and God was being leveraged by a lot of people to control and to coerce. God was being used and abused by the culture and by those in power. But he was not being known. This parable peels back what's really going on, and it asks us to examine our hearts. Today, the worst way to read this parable is to look from above and assume that I am a sheep and to use the text to condemn those that we think are goats. Rather, we are invited to sit under these words today and say, I see the goat in my own heart. Lord, I repent. And I ask you to judge this in me. Unmask the lies in my life that make me get it wrong. Help me to see how you see all people, even those who are outside my group, even those who are considered the lowest and the least. Show me those things that stand in the way of me fully understanding who I am in you and who you are for all. And that's the prayer that I have for my own heart. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. In the play Hamlet, Shakespeare wrote, "The play is the thing wherein I'll capture the conscience of the king." Stories hold a certain power—a way of reaching into hidden places and bringing truth to the surface. This is exactly what happened in the encounter between the prophet Nathan and King David. Nathan did not confront David with a simple accusation; he told him a story—a story about a rich man's cruelty toward a poor man, a story of broken trust, of taking what wasn't his, of conspiracy and the covering up of wrongdoing. Through this story, Nathan captured David's conscience and exposed his heart 17:14. And David saw it. He saw the depth of his sin—his betrayal, his adultery, his conspiracy, his murder. He saw how he had despised the word of the Lord, not just as a book of rules, but as the very presence and blessing of God, the union that God had given him—an anointing that David once cherished and then cast aside. David turned away from God in a moment of self-indulgence, as if he could separate himself from the God who called and blessed him 18:40. Yet, what this story reveals is that though we may despise or deny our union with God, God does not despise us—he will not abandon or reject us. God's discipline is not about retribution; it is about restoration. He sends his prophets and his word not to condemn, but to restore us, to recall us to himself. Psalm 51 is David's cry for restoration—a pleading for a renewed and healed heart, for the joy of God's salvation to be his once again 19:43. Even if we find ourselves far from God, in denial, in brokenness, God's word comes to heal, to renew, to draw us back. He will make us whole. That's the heart of God—to restore and not reject, to draw near rather than cast out 20:09. May we not deny the union we have with God. Instead, let us embrace it and live out of the wholeness and restoration that only he gives. May his love, his discipline, and his relentless pursuit bring us home, renew our hearts, and make us instruments of his peace and grace. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's my prayer for you. May it be so. The religious leaders came to Jesus with their questions, thinking they could entangle him in his words. But beneath their queries, there was something missing—understanding of the Scriptures and the power of God. Jesus saw through their schemes and told them directly, "Your mistake is that you don't know the Scriptures and you don't know the power of God." That's the problem: you can know all about the Bible, have it memorized even, but if you're not seeing it through Jesus, you're missing the point. Religion on its own can make us feel pious, can make us experts in what's written, but it cannot empower us to love—God or others. That power is in Jesus. To know the Scriptures, to know the power of God, is to know him and the power of his resurrection. God doesn't just offer us knowledge. He gives us the power to live—a new quality of life. We aren't left to pose or pretend. Instead, God has wrapped us up in his life and love even before we knew it. While we were still sinners, Christ gave himself for us. Looking at the Bible through the lens of Jesus, we see it plainly: God has acted for the sake of the whole world. You are included. The parable Jesus told makes this so visible—good and bad alike have been welcomed into the banquet of God. That's what we remember every day: that we are loved, not by our doing, not by our goodness, not by trapping God with questions or answers, but simply because of who God is and what he has done for us in Jesus. Let's ask God to help us see his Scriptures and his power through the person of Jesus—to know him, his word, and his love. That's a prayer I have for my own life, for my family, and for each of you. No, he has come to shed his own blood on behalf of others. The spoils of war for this king are not silver, gold, and bronze. Far from it. The spoils of his victory are people, nations, the world – far more precious than any gold. He has come for sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes, ordinary fishermen, and anyone who has been humbled by the defeats of war, even the wars in their own life – in relationships, health, finances, ministry. So many ways that we have experienced defeat. He comes for all the women and men who are ready to wave the white flag of surrender to the humble, conquering king, who comes riding on a borrowed donkey. Daily, he gives his own life in order to offer victory to the defeated. So let's look, because our king is coming. He is humble, riding on a donkey. And this king says to all the defeated ones: Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light. See how humble he is. Jericho is described as the lowest city on earth, and in Scripture it's the place where the blind receive their sight. Today, as we encounter two unnamed blind men in Jericho, crying out for mercy and to be able to see, we start to see Jericho as a kind of metaphor for our own lives. Each of us comes to a place where we can't see, where we've been brought low by the circumstances of life. It may not be a city, but we all find our private Jericho. At these low points, when our vision is gone and there seems to be no way out, we're reminded by these two blind men that we can cry out to Jesus. We can ask him for mercy, for sight, for the healing and hope we need. The Scripture tells us that Jesus stops. He hears. He sees us, even at our lowest, and he asks, "What do you want me to do for you?" It's not indifference that meets our weakness, but deep, compassionate attention. This is the heart of our God—to see us, to care for us, to heal us, and to invite us to follow him. When we know that we are truly seen and loved by God, we find the strength and the joy to follow where he leads. It was love that compelled those two newly-seeing men to follow Jesus, and it is the knowledge of his love that empowers us, too, to keep following, even from the lowest points of our journey. And so today, when you find yourself in your own Jericho, unable to see the road ahead or brought low by life's trials, remember the invitation to cry out. Remember that Jesus still stops. He still sees. He still calls, heals, and loves. Let this love guide your steps forward behind him today. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughter, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. In Matthew 19, Jesus speaks about the law—not as a set of rules meant to bring life, but as a concession to our hard hearts. When asked about divorce, he makes it clear: the laws were never God's original intention. They are an acknowledgment of our rebellion, our separation, our waywardness. The law meets us in our brokenness, but it is not the answer. God's answer is not a rule but a relationship. The answer is pictured in marriage—a union where two become one, where love and faithfulness are at the center. At the very first miracle, Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding, and at the last, all of creation gathers for the great marriage feast of the Lamb. All of Scripture, from beginning to end, is pointing us to the Bridegroom—Jesus. He alone is the One who transforms and heals the hard places within us. The keepers of the law came to trap Jesus, but he was not interested in debate. Instead, he offers a new way—a way to freedom and newness of heart, a miracle of transformation for all who would let him work. Jesus is the answer for our condition, the One who brings hope and changes hearts of stone into hearts alive with love. It is in him that all things are made new, where the impossible becomes possible, and where grace meets us in our deepest need. The law shows us our limits, but Christ gives us his life. Let us receive him, the Bridegroom who has come for us. Let him soften what has grown hard. Let him make us new. Step into the life that is yours in Christ—the life of joy, reconciliation, and love. Mercy has been shown to him, yet this man will not show mercy to others. Why is he behaving this way? Why is his heart not changed by the mercy of the King? Why is he so desperate to collect from others now that he himself is debt free? Maybe it's because he resents the King. The heart of the flesh never wants to admit its debt. When the debt is pointed out, and even when it is forgiven, the heart doesn't receive it as such. The heart of the flesh is still trying to pay back and earn, to rid itself of the shame by extracting it from others. The debtor wants to free himself of the shame. He is desperate never to be in that position again. But the heart that is ready to receive mercy is evidenced by the desire to offer mercy. It realizes the debt was too great and there was no way to ever repay it. The King has absorbed the loss because of his generous heart, and this is true for you and me too. King Jesus has absorbed the loss, the debt — he took on the insurmountable debt on Calvary's mountain, and he said, "forgiven." We can never collect enough from others to pay back what we owe. We must simply receive from the generous heart of the King. That's it. And when we do, we're changed by his loving, forgiving, and merciful heart. And we can, and we must, offer the same heart of generosity to others, forgiving the debts of others as we ourselves have been forgiven. Today, let's live with that generosity of heart, for we have been forgiven. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. This story is about far more than Jesus' clothes being transformed, made dazzling white, whiter than snow. It's about you and me. It's about the world and all things being transformed. In this story, we are offered both a vision and a voice. The first thing we see is that Jesus—he's the final word. He's the one we're told to listen to, over and above all else. Not Elijah, not Moses, not the writings, not the Torah, not Peter, not me, not you. Peter witnesses this amazing moment—there he is, suddenly, Elijah and Moses are speaking with Jesus on the mountain. And Peter, out of fear or pride, or probably both, shouts out, Lord, it's good for us to be here. If you wish, I'll make three tabernacles here. One for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah. Peter thinks somehow he's going to have some final say here. And so we hear him say those words: I will make a tabernacle. Other translations render it, let us build, but "let us build" is not the final word. No, those words are often born out of fear and pride, but they will never be the final word. Individuals and kingdoms and churches are always offering this as the final word. Let us build, but fear which makes us cower and pride which puffs us up will all be subsumed in the end by God's voice, by God himself, the living Word. And we see that here—suddenly a cloud envelops them and a voice comes from the cloud. The voice they hear is the Father saying, this is my son that I love. Listen to him. At the sound of his voice, they're terrified. They fall face down to the ground. It's at this point that Jesus comes and touches them. Says, get up. Don't be afraid. When they look up, nobody is there but Jesus—Moses, Elijah, gone. Only Jesus remains. No more voices, no more conversations. Only Jesus, the one who is the final word. He's the one that remains. And he, the living Word, will envelop all of our fearful pride. His voice will break through all things, and he will make all things new. So let's hear the Father's voice on this mountain today. He's pointing us to his son. And not just on this mountain, but on a different mountain. This whole episode is pointing us to Calvary's mountain. And not just Peter, James, and John are being drawn to Calvary's mountain—no, he's drawing all of humanity there to himself. When the Son of Man is lifted up, he will draw all humanity to himself, that he might transform all things, including you and me. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I'll hear the Father well, that I'll see what Peter, James, and John saw—that Jesus is the final word. He is the living Word, and through him, he's making all things new. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: It's a dangerous trap. That's what Jesus calls it—to see things only from your own point of view, from your own perspective. It's a dangerous trap to let your own plans, ambitions, or understanding be the lens through which you interpret everything that comes. When Peter tried to persuade Jesus away from the cross, Jesus rebuked him harshly—Get away from me, Satan. You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God's. What a sober warning. It's dangerous to hold onto your life and your agenda apart from God. To insist that life be about you, your comfort, your plans, your will—this is the trap. Jesus says, "If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it." To make your life a project about your own ego or status or pleasure is to forfeit what matters most. But Jesus gives us a way out of this trap. Through the cross, he offers us the way to true life. The cross is not just a symbol—it's the place where you have been restored, forgiven, made new, brought into the family of God. In the cross, your true identity is declared: a beloved child of God. Through Christ's victory on the cross, the chains of self-centeredness and spiritual blindness are broken. The cross proclaims what God has done and what you have become. Your soul, lost and searching, is found and made new in him. And to pursue your life apart from Christ is to miss that—it's to forfeit your soul. But to see what God has done is to step into your true self, your redeemed self, participating in his life and love. On the cross, we see what it means to love—to give, to forgive, to walk alongside others in their pain. This is the life Jesus invites you into—a life that is fully alive, fully surrendered, fully his. So I pray that for myself, for my family, and for you: that we would not fall for the trap of living from our own point of view, but instead, live from the perspective of the cross, of Christ's victory and love and self-giving. That we would see ourselves and our lives through what he has done, and that we would be set free to love and live as he has made us to be. May it be so. Today, we witness the rise of David amid conflict, explore the loyalty and strength of his supporters, and listen as Jesus challenges tradition, faith, and humility in dramatic encounters with religious leaders and a desperate Gentile woman. Through scripture, reflection, and prayer, we are invited to discover faith that overcomes barriers and to remember that, above all, we are dearly loved. Let's get started. TODAY'S DEVOTION: A group of Pharisees and a solitary Gentile woman come to Jesus, and at first, it seems as if both are offended by him. The Pharisees certainly are—Hunter notes how Peter even says to Jesus, "Don't you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?" Jesus has criticized their traditions, called them hypocrites, blind guides, and so they walk away offended, convinced Jesus isn't measuring up to their standards of holiness, still clinging to their way of interpreting Scripture and tradition. But the Gentile woman, though she seemingly has even more to take offense at—after all, Jesus has appeared to compare her to a dog—does not take offense. Instead, Hunter draws out the contrast: while the Pharisees approach Jesus in reliance on their own righteousness, seeking to justify themselves, the woman comes in humility, in desperate need, and in faith for the sake of her daughter, ready to worship Jesus. Even as an outsider, a Gentile, Hunter points out, she calls him Lord and Son of David. Unlike the religious insiders, this woman sees and believes in what the Pharisees cannot. She leaves knowing she is dear to God—not because she lived up to some prescribed way or standard, but because she came in faith. She leaves with a full heart and a daughter delivered. This woman's faith wins Jesus' commendation. Out of her trust in God's love comes healing, deliverance, and restoration. Today, we are invited to join her—trusting that we, too, are dear to God, loved by him, and that from his love will flow the healing, deliverance, and fullness of life that are ours in Christ. That's the prayer Hunter has for his own soul, for his family, and for all of us. May we lay down self-righteousness, self-justification, tradition clung to for its own sake, and come instead with open, humble faith. May we know we are loved and find in God all we truly need. May it be so. Sometimes, what looks like chaos is really a classroom, and the lesson isn't always pass or fail. God, in his wisdom, can use the tests of life—the wind and the waves themselves—as teaching assistants, drawing us deeper into understanding his heart for us. It's often in those dark moments, the stormy nights when we're most weary and afraid, that Jesus calls us out of our comfort. That's what happened to Peter. Out in the storm, at his weakest point, Peter is invited to step out of the boat and do something unimaginable: walk on water. It's in coming to the end of ourselves, coming up empty and unable, that God can begin to fill and empower and show us what's possible when our eyes are on him. This is the lesson of letting God be God. When we turn our gaze toward him—even as the wind blows and the waves rise—we find ourselves sustained by his power in new and unthinkable ways. But if, like Peter, our focus shifts to our fears, we'll find ourselves sinking just the same. The storm can either draw our focus toward him or away from him. The choice is ours. So the real invitation is this: Keep your eyes on Jesus in the storm. Let the troubles of life press you into his embrace, not away. May we heed his call and know his joy, even when we don't understand, even when we're scratching our heads at life's complexities or what we read in Scripture. Let's pray for that focus, for that wisdom, for that joy to shape our hearts and families and lives. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus is telling stories about seeds and soil and the miracle and mystery of new life. Seeds are being thrown out on every imaginable kind of soil, not to waste the seed, but because the miracle of life can take place in any kind of soil. Life is a miracle, and yet there are so many things that come against life. The fact that there's any life at all is simply a miracle when you consider all that we're up against. That's true in agriculture as well as in our own lives. The worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, the desire for things, and the thief that comes to plant weeds in the field. And on and on it goes, one thing after another. So much standing in the way of life, so much is coming against that seed on its own. It doesn't stand a chance. And that's the point of the gospel, that God, seeing that we don't stand a chance at life apart from him, apart from a miracle, has done that very thing. God has intervened. God has provided the miracle that we need. His intervention wasn't by appearing in some otherworldly apparition or vision, sitting high and lofty above all in his brilliant and impenetrable light. That's not how he came. That could have been the miracle. But it wasn't anything like that. God's miraculous intervention was far more humble than that. God became a human being. The Creator assumed the life of the creature. He put on flesh and bones and lived among us. He came and sat with us in this messy soil. He came to give us his life in the midst of this messy world, in the midst of your messy world. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see what God has done in Christ. That I'll see the miracle of the incarnation of God with us. That I'll see the miracle of the seed that died for all so that all might live. That I'll see the heart of God who saw our need of a miracle and he came, humbled himself and gave himself on behalf of all. That I'll worship him today and that I'll have his joy. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Join Hunter, your Bible reading coach and fellow traveler, as we dive into 1 Samuel 28-29, Psalm 109, and Matthew 11. Today, we'll explore Saul's desperate search for guidance, David's position among the Philistines, the cries and prayers of a troubled psalmist, and Jesus' words to a doubting John the Baptist. Through reflection, prayer, and encouragement, we'll be reminded that even when our circumstances seem overwhelming, God sees us and is at work in our lives. Settle in for Scripture, soul work, and renewal as we seek God's presence together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: See beyond the walls. What do you do when it seems that God is inattentive to your circumstances? Are you tempted to lose faith, to shut down, to walk away, to try and go it alone? John the Baptist feels you. Here he is, in prison, and his circumstances aren't looking good. In fact, it won't be long before he's executed. It's doubtful that he had this in mind when he answered God's call and went into the desert to preach. John had a clear sense of purpose: he was to prepare the way for the Lord, for the Messiah to arrive. Yet in this chapter of his story, nothing seems clear anymore. He is awaiting his death. So he sends his disciples to Jesus with a pressing question: Are you the one we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else? John's vision of his place in God's story is getting cloudy, and he wants clarity. To John, it seems like God is being inattentive to his struggles, like God's not coming through. The temptation for doubt is real and heavy. You can't blame John. He sends his friends to Jesus, longing for confirmation, for something that will shore up his hope. Notice how Jesus responds. He doesn't tell them, "I'm the guy—tell John I'll break him out by noon." Instead, Jesus says to report what they hear and see: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me. John's circumstances have shrunk his vision down to the size of his cell, but Jesus wants him to see something bigger—something beyond the prison walls. It's as if Jesus is saying to John, "Hang in there, John. See beyond the walls. There's something more happening here." Maybe this is the message for you today. Don't let your faith hinge on whether God has answered your current prayers or performed according to your recent expectations. When your world closes in and your vision shrinks, remember this message: God is at work—the blind see, the lame walk, the hurting are healed. He is not inattentive or neglectful of you. He is working all things out according to his purposes for you. Even when you cannot see past your prison walls, God has his eye on you, just as Jesus had his eye on John. Jesus knew all about John. Jesus had not forgotten his friend. And the same is true for you. Let us allow Jesus to renew our vision—to see the God who is at work, the God who sees me. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Jesus acknowledges these physical needs without excluding our spiritual needs—the needs of our soul and heart. He sees our need for forgiveness, for healing from shame and regrets. And there, he has compassion. There, he reaches out. There, he heals, and there, he forgives. He says to the paralytic, "Be encouraged, my child. Your sins are forgiven." The same is true in our lives. He sees our physical needs, and he sees and responds to our spiritual need—our need for forgiveness, our need for wholeness and healing. He has come to show mercy. That was the question that weighed on the heart of the leper in Matthew 8. Is God willing to reach out with hands of compassion and touch him, to make him clean? It's a question that echoes through all of us at some point—will God reach out to me? Will God break through the distance, the uncleanness, the unworthiness that I feel? Or will he keep his distance? The Roman officer had this question, too—wondering if God would show mercy and healing to his suffering servant. The crowds outside Peter's mother-in-law's house lined up with the same unspoken hope: will God reach even me? This is the deep ache every human heart feels, the root of our fear and the lie that so often gets sold to us—that God, in his holiness, could not possibly make up the distance to where we are. That our failures, our uncleanness, our inadequacy, build a wall he will not cross. Religion sometimes reinforces this story, making a fortune on the lie of separation—that God is far off, unwilling to bridge the gap. But separation is a lie. The gospel tells a different story entirely. Jesus faces the question head on and answers with, "I am willing." He steps into our mess, our uncleanness, our brokenness, and bridges every gap. He comes to us at our lowest, at our worst. He is willing, present, compassionate. God is not separate—he is with you, right where you are. Jesus has shattered the illusion of distance. He has shown us, once and for all, what God is really like: with us, for us, willing to touch, heal, make whole. The embrace of Christ is unshakable. His willingness undoubtable. The invitation to union and nearness is open to all—there is no wall he will not cross, no uncleanness too deep, no wound too raw. The reality of the gospel is that you are not alone and never separated. God is willing. God is compassionate. God is here. That's the good news I'm rooting my heart in today. That's the prayer I have for myself, for my wife and my daughters and my son, and for you: that the lie of separation would be rooted out, and our roots would sink deep into the gospel of union with God in Christ. May it be so. This is the essence of all that is taught in the Law and the prophets. That's what we heard in Matthew's gospel today, the heart of it all—the golden rule, so simple, so profound, and yet few truly find it, and only One has truly lived it. He is the door, the gateway, the narrow road that leads to life. The road is narrow because it's a road that requires death to our self and our own efforts. We don't arrive at this life of love through striving or earning. Instead, we come like children—helpless, trusting, in need of a good Father's love and grace. We are to trust that our Father does not give us stones when we ask for bread; he knows how to give good gifts, to shape the very essence of who we are. His life in us, his transforming Spirit, produces good fruit in us—not by our stressed striving, but as a gift. When we abide in him, when we seek, when we knock, when we participate in his life, his joy and his goodness, then we begin to live out this posture of grace, this golden rule, from the inside out. We're able to love as we would want to be loved, extend grace as we would hope to receive it, and bear the kind of fruit that only comes from his Spirit living in us. We do not do this alone. We need eyes open to what our good Father has done for us in Christ. Our lives are hidden in him, and from that place we can rejoice in the new life that is ours. Let us receive the Spirit of Christ, the transforming power, and let his life become the melody of our own, producing the kind of love and grace the world so desperately needs. TODAY'S DEVOTION: What are you looking at? Where is your eye being drawn? What light is filling your life? Hunter reminds us that if the world catches our eye, we'll find our hearts filled and even dominated by worry—concerns about survival, about what we eat, drink, wear, and even people's opinions of us. The world teaches us to look inward, to focus on ourselves, and when our eye is fixed inward it becomes a black hole—pulling us deeper into self-obsession, worry, and regret. Jesus warns that an unhealthy eye fills our whole body with darkness. Even for religious people, Jesus gives a strong caution: if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is. To parade our religious acts before others, seeking attention rather than God, is to dwell in this darkness. But Jesus offers us another way—a way that leads us out of the spiral of worry and self-focus. He invites us to a God-focused life, a life of trust and rest in our Father who knows us, sees us, and loves us. When our eyes are fixed on him, when we're caught up in the light of Christ, we begin to see ourselves and others with new eyes. We learn to love, to serve, to honor—not because we're seeking praise, but because his love is filling our hearts. The light of Christ can shine into every hidden corner of our lives—into our past, our wounds, our fears—bringing healing, wholeness, and renewal. So what you look at really matters. Where is your gaze? Let your eyes be fixed on Jesus. Let his light fill not just your eyes, but your soul and every part of your being. As his light shines in you, you become new. That is the miracle and the invitation of life with Christ. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. When you think about the Sermon on the Mount, what stands out? Many might say it is a list of high ethical expectations, almost impossible to attain. Yet, nestled right there in Jesus' words is a deeper message: he has not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. What does that mean for us, today? Matthew draws a powerful parallel between Moses, who ascended Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments, and Jesus, who climbs this mountainside to deliver his most famous sermon. Moses gave the law; Jesus offers its fulfillment. But Jesus tells us plainly—he is not erasing the old commands. He is here to complete them, to bring them to their true end. And that end, that purpose, is love. The law, in its truest sense, was never meant to be a ladder we climb, striving to make ourselves right with God. It was meant to point us to our need for him, to expose the heart. Jesus recites these laws—not to bind us to endless rules, but to lead us to the very heart of God. At the heart of it all is love—love for God, love for neighbor, love that is stronger than resentment, that seeks reconciliation, that moves beyond the limits of mere human justice. This is the way of Jesus—the far better Moses—showing us the way of love. And by the power of Christ, we are invited into it. This life begins as we experience the love of God for ourselves. Out of that love, we are called to let go of anger, make peace with others, keep our word, live with purity, and embrace the radical call even to love our enemies. As Jesus walks with us, the fulfillment of the law shows up in our lives—not by our striving, but by his life in us. The fruit of that life is freedom, joy, mercy, a love that shines like a light on a hilltop for all to see. So may God help us, today, to experience his love at the core of our being. Let us live as people shaped and led by this love—love that fulfills the law, embraces the broken, and brings us into God's heart. May his way become our way. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. On the outside, it seems that he's alone. And after forty days of fasting, outwardly, he might appear weak. That's the exact point of Satan's attack—when it seems he is most vulnerable, most isolated. In that moment, the temptation is to break with the Father and the Spirit, to act alone, to choose self-preservation, to seize what he came for by his own means instead of remaining in the community of love and dependence on God. It's the same temptation Adam faced—and failed. It's the same temptation we face, and so often, we fail. We grasp for control, for sovereignty, for solitary power, abandoning trust and union with God. But where we fail, Jesus will not. Seeing our need and our weakness, he enters into our condition and does what we cannot. He overcomes the temptation. He stays faithful. Through his faithfulness, he wins for us—wins back our place in the community of love with God. Because Jesus would not be deterred, but clung to union with the Father and the Spirit, he demonstrates what life in God truly is: dependence, trust, communion. He would win not just the battle in the desert, but the war on the cross. And through his victory, we are all invited back—into the circle of belonging, into God's family, into union and communion, victory and joy. Today, hear this invitation. In Christ, we are called to participate with him, victorious over evil, called into a life not of solitary striving, but of humble dependence. Life in God is union and communion, strength in dependence, and joy in belonging. Victory is not found in going it alone, but in resting in the faithfulness of Jesus and the love of the Father and the Spirit. Let's receive our place in that community of love. Let's live lives that lean not into our own strength, but into the victory and dependence Jesus has already shown us. He has won the battle—we are invited to live in the freedom and joy that brings. That's my prayer today—for your soul, for my own, for all those we love. May we step into the reality of our union with Christ, and may that union give us strength and joy for the journey. Hear the declaration of what is. Hear the proclamation that you are loved by God. This is not a proposition. You see it again and again through the story of scripture. Where the very weapons of an enemy are turned back on themselves. Where the strength of giants falls to the weakness of faith. Take Goliath—that enormous, armored enemy defying the people of God. His height, his armor, his weapons are all intimidating and overwhelming. But David steps onto the battlefield with nothing but a sling, a handful of stones, and trust in the God who delights in making giants fall. God reverses the supposed power of those who oppose him. David, the psalmist, reminds us: "They have dug a pit in my path, but they themselves have fallen into it." And it is not only with David and Goliath—this pattern finds its greatest expression at the cross. The cross, meant to destroy and defeat, becomes the very means of victory. What was used as a weapon against Jesus was turned into the instrument that defeated sin, death, and the grave for all who trust in him. God is in the business of turning things around. He brings about the great reversal at the cross for you and for me. It's not the sword, spear, or javelin that wins the battle, but the presence and power of the Lord of Heaven's armies. Whatever giant you're facing, it can be faced with faith, not armaments. Today is a good day to remember the God who brings reversals and rejoice in it. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer I have for you. May it be so. When Samuel pours oil over David's head, it's almost easy to miss. There's no spectacle, no immediate change in the circumstances. David goes back to the field, back to the ordinary. But something true has been named. Not by outward strength, not by appearance, but by the quiet seeing of God. The Lord looks on the heart. That moment doesn't make David powerful in the ways we might expect. It places him within a story—a long, winding story where God continues to meet people in hiding places, working through what seems small, overlooked, even unlikely. And when you trace that story forward, through generations and names and lives, it carries all the way to the opening lines of the Gospel of Matthew. Not a story of uninterrupted strength, but a story marked by weakness, failure, surprise, and grace. And at the center of it, not a king grasping for power, but a life-giver—the Anointed One. Not anointed with oil alone, but filled with the very life of God. A life that doesn't dominate or control, but enters into the human story and transforms it from within. And that same life is not held at a distance. It is shared, poured out, not in spectacle, but in quiet, steady ways, in ordinary lives and people who often return, like David, back to the field. So maybe the question today isn't about where power is. Maybe it's about where God is at work—in what feels small, in what feels hidden, in what feels unfinished. And the prayer today is simple: that we would trust the places where God has quietly met us. That we would not overlook the life being formed there. For faith isn't generated by our striving; it's a participation in Christ's life, a life that is already ours. When we catch even a glimpse of that reality, everything starts to gently shift. Joy is no longer forced—it rises naturally, the way a flower blooms in sunlight. Maturity is not performance, but the slow, honest growth of roots in good soil. Encouragement flows more freely as we loosen the grip on self-preservation, trusting that we're held by something greater than our worries. Peace becomes possible—not as the result of having everything figured out, but as a knowing that we rest within the God of love and peace, not as a reward for getting it right, but as a reality we're invited to notice, abide in, and enjoy. So maybe today isn't about trying harder to perfect joy, or force maturity, or muster peace. Maybe, it's about paying attention. Where is the life of Christ showing up in you right now? Where is he already moving, already inviting, already holding you? That's my prayer today—for myself, for my family, for you: that our eyes would open to this life given, that we'd learn to dwell in it honestly and gently, trusting that it is enough, and it is ours. TODAY'S DEVOTION: What is it you find yourself wanting right now? If you slow down long enough to notice, it's there. Something you wish would change. Something you wish would come with ease. Maybe it's relief. Maybe it's clarity. Maybe it's something for someone you love. Paul knew that place. He doesn't speak about it in the abstract—he names it plainly. There was something in his life that hurt, something that stayed, something that he asked God to take away again and again. He wasn't detached or above it all; he was feeling it the way we feel it. He calls it his thorn in the flesh. We don't know exactly what it was. And maybe that's part of the gift—it leaves room for us to recognize our own thorns. What's striking is not just that Paul asked, but that the answer he received didn't come in the form he hoped for, because the thorn remained. But something else opened—not a better outcome, not a cleaner resolution, but a deeper knowing. "My grace is sufficient for you. My power is made perfect in weakness." This isn't God withholding something better; it's God drawing near in a way Paul hadn't yet known. Grace isn't a substitute prize. It's the presence of God meeting Paul right in the place he wanted to escape. And over time, Paul began to see it not as something to celebrate in itself, but as a place where he is not alone, where the life of God meets him, sustains him, and even holds him in the aloneness. Perhaps the aloneness is the most traumatic part of that thorn-shaped wound. So he says, almost surprisingly, that he will boast in his weakness—not because weakness is good, but because it has become a place of encounter, a place where the aloneness can be undone. Maybe the invitation isn't to stop wanting or to pretend that the thorn doesn't matter. Maybe it's to notice where even here you are being met. Not fixed, not bypassed—but met. And the prayer today is not that everything changes, but that we might have eyes to see what is already being given: the quiet, steady presence of God, of grace, the nearness of God in the very place we would rather avoid. Paul is being lowered in a basket through a hole in the wall outside of the city, and as he's being lowered, God is lifting him up. We are being invited into an upside down world—a world where those who are lowered down are, in God's mysterious way, being lifted up, while those who lift themselves up are being lowered from within. Paul, in his letter, briefly recounts his own elevated days, that he was, as he says, like those super apostles. But Paul wants us to see that this outward elevation, this status, did nothing for his soul. In fact, while outwardly ascending, he was descending on the inside. Paul tells us his defining moments with God weren't in highlights of status or achievement, but rather in the deep descents—when he was accused, scorned, whipped, stoned, shipwrecked, left hungry and alone. It was there, in the moments of his greatest lowering, like when he was being let down in a basket outside the city, that God's presence was most real and God's strength most evident. The lowering did not defeat him; instead, it was the place where he experienced God's intimate love. God does his deepest work in our lowering. The world may tell us differently, and even super apostles may try to convince us the way up is always up—but we are reminded: See God in the lowering. Experience the fellowship of his suffering. There—in struggle, in humility, in weakness—he is faithful to bring about his good purposes in all our circumstances. And that is the prayer for my own soul today: that I will participate with God in faith, even in the lowering. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Saul had the stature of a king, but he didn't feel like it. Not on the inside, not in his heart. Others saw his physical stature, but God was looking at his heart. The people wanted a king, but God wanted a heart. So when the Spirit of God came upon Saul, the Scriptures tell us that that's what God did—he changed his heart. Saul's part was simply to say yes to this gift of life, to begin to see himself for who he now was. He was chosen. He was a leader. He was God's anointed king. But deep down, there were things that kept him from truly embracing who God said he was. He felt like an imposter. He hid in the baggage, fleeing from all of it. Saul couldn't see it. There was a part of him that worked against himself and who he really was. He was tortured with internal contradictions, and his life was marked by anguish. Things were always complicated for Saul, but the life he had been awakened to wasn't complicated. It was simple. It didn't require him to be tortured and anguished. It simply required him to say yes to God. Thank you, God. I invite you to live your life through me today. God, whatever that life may entail—when a person does that, they begin to live like a king. And it simply requires a yes to the new thing that God has done, to the new heart. A heart that would simply trust, a heart that would be free. God is offering all of us something very simple today. Who you really are is hidden with God in Christ. You are who he says you are. You don't need to power up. You don't need to bluster or fake your way through to live up to the expectations of others. You can simply rest in him. You can say yes and thank you. You can choose to believe. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul today. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. He wants to inspire us to live like good, cheerful farmers. Farmers aren't necessarily extravagant, but there is an extravagant heart. That is true of many of the farmers I've known. Maybe it's because they know that it's God who provides the seed. And from that seed comes their bread. We, like them, need to see that it is God who is the source of all that we have, right down to the very seed. It all comes from Him. He's the one who gives it, and he's the one who increases it. Remember that the crop that you receive will be in proportion to the seed that has been sown. If you're going to sow sparingly, you will reap sparingly. If you sow generously, you will reap generously. These are basic, fundamental truths in order for us to become good and cheerful farmers. So let's remember that it's all his, right down to the very last seed. Therefore, let us sow generously into the lives of others. Those in need, those that need encouragement, those that are out in the field working. And if we do, we will be blessed both to be able to continue in this gift of generosity, but also with the abundance of a full heart that comes from participating with God's generous heart for the whole world. And that, my friend, is exciting. It really is better to give than to receive. May God help us to be good and cheerful farmers. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. That makes you wealthy, that makes you blessed, that makes you His. He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because you are united with Christ. These are heavenly riches. But these spiritual riches work their way into our physical lives. They free us up to live generous lives here right now. And to the extent that we truly understand this will result in generous hearted living. Paul wants us to follow through with the generosity that was born in our hearts. He doesn't want us to stall out. He wants us to finish whatever it is that God inspired you to do. Maybe it's offering a meal to someone who's sick, spending time with someone who really needs it, giving financially to someone in need, helping to advance the cause of the gospel, as was the case of this particular passage. Whatever it is, don't stall out. Finish what God has inspired you to do. Live out your generous life because you are rich and your spiritual wealth comes from Him. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Life is what we all want. Hannah wants a child. She's a childless mother, and she longs for life. We see this story time and time again throughout the Bible—Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Samson's mother, Hannah, Micah, and Elizabeth. All of these women experienced the ache of longing for life. They wanted children. They wanted life. And, truthfully, isn't that what we all want? We're made for it. We are creatures who yearn deeply for life—real life, a life with meaning, hope, and fulfillment. And just like them, we cry out. Sometimes our cries are desperate, sometimes silent, sometimes shaped into prayers, sometimes only sighs. But God hears. He listens to the longing in our hearts. God, in His great love, makes a way for us to experience the life that we desire. That's what we see over and over again in the scriptures. Jesus tells us he has come so that we might have life, and have it abundant. This is his invitation—to bring our cries, our hopes, our very selves to him. He alone is our source. When we call out, he hears us, and from his fullness, we receive the life he's designed for us. Let's be sure to bring every longing to him. Let's begin this new day with faith, gratitude, and the assurance that you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Bitterness and dead ends, tragedy and loss – at first, that's what the Book of Ruth looks like. Naomi's story is marked by famine, exile, death; so much so that she insists on being called Mara, meaning "bitter" – a name reflecting what she believes to be her story: one of cruel, relentless loss. Maybe some of you feel the same way about your own life after these past few years. Hardships, loss, displacement, even a sense of exile – it's easy to let bitterness take root, piecing together our stories and finding only pain. But Ruth teaches us something vital. When we respond in faith to God, as Ruth did, the dead ends become doorways. Her story, begun in bitterness, unfolds into a love story with eternal consequences. Ruth, a Gentile, chooses Naomi's God – even after Naomi herself has given up hope. And through this love, a kinsman Redeemer is born, the grandfather of King David. From David's line, the Redeemer of the world: Jesus himself, the kinsman Redeemer for all humanity. Ruth's faith shapes the future. When we respond like Ruth, faith makes possible the discovery that God has always been at work in our story – even if it doesn't look like it now. God turns tragedy into redemption, loss into new beginnings. Bitterness isn't the final word. God is shaping your story even amidst heartbreak. I know it's hard to see sometimes. Yet, even now, a story of God's love is being written. Hold onto him. Our Redeemer has been here all along. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer I have for you. May it be so. This is astonishing news, cosmic in scope and beautiful in its reach. On the cross, Christ did something so profound—he undid what Adam had done, and now, in him, all are made new. For Paul, this message is not just worth sharing—it's a "fearful responsibility." He's been entrusted with being an ambassador of what God has accomplished for the entire world. The old ways of seeing people—judging, dividing, excluding—have been swept away. Now Paul recognizes that all have been included in the embrace of God, even if they don't know it yet. He pleads: "Come back to God. Look, behold, see what he has done for you!" The reconciling work of Christ is not distant or theoretical—it is deeply personal, life-changing, and world-altering. When we catch even a glimpse of the magnitude of what God has done—the height, the width, the depth—it reshapes the landscape of our hearts. It fills us with awe, compassion, and longing for others to step into the fullness of God's love. This is a prayer for vision and understanding, to see as Paul sees, to grasp just a bit more the wonder of God in Christ for all. Jesus is the treasure that lives and shines within these jars of clay, and as Paul urges, we are called to fix our eyes on him. When we read troubling Old Testament stories—stories that make us question the character of God—we must remember that sometimes what we say about God is more a reflection of our own hearts than his. The darkness and evil we wrestle with are not left unresolved; God has not abandoned us in confusion. In the face of Jesus, God's character is made perfectly clear. There is no shadowy figure behind the face of Jesus—what we see is love and light, the exact representation of the heart of God. This light now shines in our hearts, so we can know the glory of God as seen in Christ. Let us keep looking at Jesus—whether in reading the Bible or in living life—in all our weakness, confusion, and suffering. Our present troubles are small compared with the glory to come. We fix our gaze on what is unseen, the enduring promise of God's love. May we go forward as jars of clay filled with treasure, living in the joy and mercy of God's revealing, abiding presence. Paul compares our life to a letter—one not written with ink or etched in stone, but written by the Spirit of God on human hearts 15:06. This new letter is a message of freedom and love; it's the identity that God establishes for his children. The old letter, the law, was glorious but always meant to be temporary. It was waiting for the arrival of something greater. With the coming of Christ, God now writes a new story in us, not shaped by our own hands or our own striving, but shaped by his Spirit 15:23. And this letter reads: You are loved. You are free. You are his 15:49. Your identity is not anchored in the idols we shape for ourselves or the relics we construct—like Micah, who made his own ephod and household gods, seeking satisfaction in something crafted by his own hands 16:05. When we try to write our own story, to make our own letter, we find ourselves exhausted, lost, and dissatisfied. These self-written stories, these idols and images we pursue, always leave us empty. They never truly set us free 16:51. Real freedom comes only when God's Spirit writes his letter on our hearts. It is a letter filled with confidence before God, an assurance that you stand forgiven and loved 17:07. This is the heart confidence we long for, and it is a gift—receive it today. God has set you free. Live today with the confidence that comes from the new thing he has written in you 17:27: You are loved, you are free, you are his. That is my prayer for my own soul, for my family—my wife, my daughters, my son—and for you. May it be so. This perfume Paul is talking about goes even further—it gives life. This life giving perfume doesn't evaporate or dissipate over time. Once poured out, it grows and multiplies. It fills the room, it fills the world. Its fragrance spreads through time and gives life to each new generation, each new civilization. This is eternal, life giving perfume. It has been poured out on us, and we are to pour it out on others. On this Good Friday, we remember that God's life giving perfume was poured out in the life of our Lord Jesus upon the whole earth as he hung from the cross. He gave Himself so that he might offer radical forgiveness for all, that he might suffer on behalf of all, that that fragrant life would beautify all. So this day, may the Spirit of Christ—the fragrance of his life—emanate from our souls into this world. May others be awakened to the fragrant life, the self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering life of our Lord. May we all be awakened to this life that is ours in him today. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Let's start the month with hope, faith, and joy. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Letting go of the death grip. Given the option, I'll rely on myself every time. Given the choice, I'll hold on to control with a death grip until I reach the point of death. My guess is you know that grip well. It's that instinct inside us, that urge to handle every pressure and problem, every sorrow and uncertainty, by our own strength. But God invites us into something entirely different—a life that is not clinging in fear but open in trust. As Speaker B reflects on 11:00, God sometimes brings us to the end of ourselves so that we would learn, like Paul, to stop relying on ourselves and instead trust in God—the One who raises the dead. The power of the resurrection, the very presence of Christ with us and in us, is what loosens our desperate hold and gives us something far more certain to cling to: Him. Suffering is impossible to avoid in this life, and the meaning of it is often beyond our understanding. We won't always have clean answers, even as we walk through heartache and questions that won't relent. What we do have is this: a Savior who suffers with us, a God who meets us in the depths of our loss, shame, and wounds, and who brings comfort and hope beyond our suffering—hope strong enough to give us joy even in life's hardest places. This is the mystery and the gift: God is the radically forgiving, co-suffering One. The love of God in Christ reaches us at the lowest point, mends what's been torn, and not only heals us but enables us to comfort others. As Speaker B paraphrased Paul at 17:33, "for when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you." Suffering becomes a meeting place of love—God's love to you and, through you, for others. So if you feel your grip tightening on all that brings pain and fear, hear this invitation today: open your hands to His. He didn't feel like a mighty warrior. He felt like he was the least of the least. That's what he told the angel of the Lord: I come from the least of the tribes of Israel, and I am the least within my own family. That's not what God called him. God didn't call him the least of the least. He called him a mighty warrior. Regardless of how you feel, you are who God says you are. You might be beaten up, exhausted, and hiding like Gideon was, but like Gideon, God will come and find you. He comes looking for people just like that, so that he might prove himself strong through us. He delights in making the least the greatest. And he ultimately will win the victory for us, just as he did for the 300 trumpet-blowing Israelites. It was God who won that victory. It was God who was showing himself strong among the least. In the end, it is God who says who we are. If he chooses to call you mighty warrior, then that, my friend, is who you are. Have you heard him call you daughter, son, friend? Well, that's who you are. You are who God says you are. So listen and receive the blessing of the name that he has given you. There's going to be a time coming when we stand before God— in Revelation, we're told that there's a gift for those who overcome: it is a white stone, and on it will be written a name that no one understands but the one who receives it. You are who God says you are. So live in the light of that. Receive the blessing of it and rise up into what he's calling you to do. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?" 16:27 These sobering words echo Shakespeare's lines: "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day… Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." 17:09 Whether it is the pursuit of the arts, power, prestige, pleasures, or making a name for yourself, all of it in and of itself is laden with nihilism 17:54; it all renders down to nothing apart from this—apart from love 17:59. Paul tells us here very clearly that love is what animates our days with meaning 18:11. Love imbues every gesture in life with the eternal 18:20. And love's kind was revealed to us in the flesh—in the life of Jesus 18:27. So we look to him, friends. We look to him as the model of our life in love 18:38. It is a self-giving life, a radically forgiving life, a co-suffering life—a life that is patient and kind [18:51](/timestamps/1131]. Not jealous, not boastful, not proud, nor rude [18:54](/timestamps/1134]. It doesn't demand its own way. It's not irritable and it keeps no record of wrongs [19:03](/timestamps/1143]. It doesn't rejoice about injustice, but rejoices when the truth wins out. It never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through everything [19:07](/timestamps/1147]. So by his grace, dear friends, let us be reminded today that love can deliver us from a meaningless life and that God Himself has gifted us with his love [19:22](/timestamps/1162]. You get to add your unique sound to the magnificent masterpiece that God is composing in and through his people. The very word "personality" comes from the Latin word "persona," literally meaning your sound. God has created you to offer your sound, your life, your presence, to his great song. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God's masterpiece. That word in the Greek is poema; it means poem. God has expertly crafted you to be exactly who you are, right where you are. To learn to play our part in the music of God's kingdom, we must begin by accepting our own humanity—because God has. He has accepted your humanity; he has even embraced all of humanity. He became one of us. He knows every secret, every weakness. As the prophet says, he remembers that we are but dust. And yet, in Christ, you have become a partaker of the divine nature—God's very life now dwells in you. You are deeply valued and cherished by God. Part of our Christian journey is learning to discover what it means to partake in the life of God. This does not make us God, but it does mean we've been welcomed into his family, his purposes, his symphony. So as we learn to play our part, we must remember both our humanity and our participation in God's divine life. When that is lived out, it looks like giving of oneself—being radically forgiving, learning to suffer alongside those who are in pain, offering self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. This is what it looks like to live as the masterpiece you truly are. That is a prayer I have for my own soul. That is a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. TODAY'S DEVOTION: We hear the cry of the flesh: "I will do it." That was Israel's confident response to Joshua—"We will serve the Lord"—but Joshua challenged them, saying, "No, you will not." Israel insisted, "We will do it." And how often do we echo that same refrain? Our hearts, like Peter's, boldly declare things like "I will never disown you," only to discover the weakness of our resolve when the moment of testing comes. Before the rooster crowed, Peter had denied the Lord three times. That is the story of the flesh—full of promises, full of self-assurance, but destined to betray both ourselves and God. What we need is not another promise from ourselves, but Someone who can do what we could never do, Someone who has done it. That Someone is Jesus. He is the One who was faithful when we were not. He undid what Adam—and all the sons and daughters of Adam—have continued to do. He kept the covenant. He served his Father in absolute obedience, all the way to the end. He did it. And after he had done it, he declared, "It is finished. It is done." So, as God's people, we need not rely on our own flesh. We need not say, "We will do it." Instead, let us proclaim, "It is done. He has done it." Let us live in the reality of Christ's victory—not our own striving, but his finished work. Because he did it, we can remain in the land. We can remain in him, in his promise and in life. Live in the One who has accomplished what we could never accomplish. That's the prayer for my soul; that's the prayer for my family—my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
