It’s the last ever brand new DVD he ever purchased at full price - it’s magickal psychological two-hander A Dark Song!A Dark Song marked the feature directorial debut of Irish filmmaker Liam Gavin, who also wrote the screenplay. Released in 2016, the film takes a restrained approach to the occult, building its story around a lengthy ceremonial ritual rather than relying on traditional horror conventions.The film centres on two strangers who isolate themselves in a remote house to perform an elaborate months-long ritual, with Gavin drawing on real occult traditions to give the story an uncommon sense of authenticity. After moving to the seemingly idyllic town of Cradle Bay, teenager Steve Clark begins to suspect that his fellow students are the products of a sinister behavioural modification programme.Disturbing Behavior began as a screenplay by Scott Rosenberg, which MGM acquired in 1997 before partnering with Beacon Communications on the production. James Marsden was cast alongside Katie Holmes and Nick Stahl, assembling a young ensemble at the height of the 1990s teen movie boom. Based on Jirō Tsunoda’s 1973 horror manga The Newspaper of Terror (Kyoufu Shinbun). Premonition was released in 2004 as part of Takashige Ichise’s J-Horror Theater project, an anthology of standalone horror films from some of Japan’s best-known genre directors. The series also featured films by Takashi Shimizu, Hideo Nakata, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Masayuki Ochiai, and Hiroshi Takahashi, helping to showcase a new wave of Japanese horror following the international success of films such as Ring and Ju-On.The film uses the manga’s central idea of a newspaper that predicts future tragedies as the foundation for a completely new screenplay, with the script undergoing around two years of revisions before filming began. Although Tsunoda was initially unhappy with how much the story differed from his manga, he reportedly changed his opinion after seeing the finished film.Released as a double feature alongside Infection, Premonition combines supernatural horror with psychological drama, using its unsettling premise of a newspaper that foretells the future to explore grief, guilt, and the fear of being powerless to change fate. Vacancy, directed by Nimród Antal, stars Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson as a married couple who become trapped in an isolated roadside motel, where they discover the room has been rigged to film gruesome snuff movies.Antal approached the film as a tribute to classic suspense thrillers, particularly Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, favouring tension, confined locations, and psychological suspense over excessive gore, and although reviews were mixed on release, critics generally praised the film’s stripped-back approach to horror and its emphasis on suspense instead of graphic violence. DEALER’S CHOICE - On our third go around of Dealer’s Choice, Paul picks a movie that we all have fond memories of: hitman procedural / kitchen sink drama / folk horror Kill List (2011), directed by Ben Wheatley. Blending crime thriller, psychological horror, and folk horror, Kill List follows a former soldier who returns to work as a contract killer, only to become entangled in a series of increasingly disturbing events.Wheatley set out to make a horror film inspired by the gritty crime films of the 1970s and the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft. Originally planned to shoot in the Philippines, the project ultimately became a low-budget British production, starring Neil Maskell, who was cast as Jay after previously working with Wheatley. To create more natural performances, many scenes were filmed twice - first as written, then with the cast improvising dialogue and expanding on their characters’ backstories. Wheatley later removed much of the script’s exposition during editing, intentionally leaving the film open to interpretation and allowing its unsettling mystery to unfold without clear explanations.Rather than relying on traditional horror conventions, Wheatley drew on themes of domestic tension, economic uncertainty, and the psychological effects of violence. The film’s mysterious cult was deliberately left unexplained, while its shocking bursts of brutality were designed to keep audiences uncertain about where the story was heading.Although Kill List received modest attention on its initial release, it has since become one of the defining British horror films of the 2010s.
