Dating America
by Jessica Baker
What if finding home worked a little like dating? After spending 34 years in the smallest state in America, Rhode Island, I packed everything I could fit into my SUV and hit the road—living in different cities across the country and trying each one on for size. There will be first dates, red flags, questionable decisions, great food, queer adventures, heartbreak, and hopefully a little chemistry. But the real relationship I’m exploring is with the places themselves.I’m dating cities, lifestyles, communities, and different versions of myself—asking what makes somewhere worth building a life in and what it really means to feel at home.Maybe I’ll fall in love with a place. Maybe I’ll fall in love along the way. Maybe I’ll end up right back where I started.I don’t know yet. That’s the point. This is Dating America.
