Now it is easy to see why this is Paul Naschy's most successful film, it clearly deserves that honor. The Grue-Crew follow H.G. Wells and THING TO COME (1936) 90 years into the past to predict 10 years into the future. This film is fully politically charged but incredibly fascinating. While it slogs from time to time compared to modern films, it manages to deliver as a movie by the end. The film spans over four distinct dates: 1940, 1966, 1970, and 2036 encompassing a decades long war and the reformation of civilization afterwards. The main character that we follow is John Cabal as he goes from a cynical visionary to a liberator from the skies as part of the Wings Over the World; for the 2036 time jump, we follow his descendant, Oswald Cabal as society races to the moon. The film is a legendary British science fiction classic with extraordinary visuals well worth a watch sparking a multitude of discussions from the Crew. Enjoy! The Decades of Horror Grue Crews stick with the folk horror subgenre and bring in Scott Wells to help explain some of the details. This time, the film is A CHINESE GHOST STORY (1987), from Hong Kong producer Tsui Hark and director Siu-Tung Ching. The great Leslie Cheung and Joey Wang create the chemistry necessary to believe this "ghost meets innocent, naive tax collector" love story. Of course, they need the help of Wu Ma's Monk/Swordsman to overcome the hold the Old Dame has over the two lovebirds. Much wire-work, special makeup effects, stop-motion animation, and mystical shenanigans ensue, making for one heck of a fun film experience. Enjoy! This exercise in lycanthropic folk horror from Argentina catches the Grue Crew by surprise. Lulled to sleep by the slow, freezer-burn pace of the first twenty minutes, they immediately perk up when the Devil shows his face. There are several reasons to watch this film: brilliant cinematography, an excellent performance from Alfredo Alcón, entertaining supporting characters, fascinating folk horror, and a WEREWOLF! Jeff picks an obscure Japanese horror film, THE LIVING SKELETON (1968 - Kyūketsu Dokurosen), for episode 235 of Decades of Horror The Classic Era. This black and white novelty was featured in Criterion's When Horror Came to Shochiku along with The X from Outer Space, Genocide, and Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell. While skeletons are featured in the film, the rumors of their being "living" are greatly exaggerated. Instead, and perhaps for the better, director Hiroshi Matsuno plays out a ghostly revenge tale featuring bats, haunted ships, and mad scientists. Still, sadly, no living skeletons. Oh, well. Regardless, the film delivers plenty to discuss, marvel upon, and question heavily. Check it out. Enjoy! PRIMAL RAGE (1988) is a horror movie that gets very little mention, accolades, or fanfare. Many horror fans may not have heard of the film, instead maybe they recall the 1995 video came or 2018 movie of the same name. For this episode, Bill steps up and declare "The Grue-Crew shall watch Primal Rage!" And so we did. Odd choice, but let's go with it. It's not long before she realized this was a mistake and she's ready to disintegrate them all.... all 7 or 8 of them. Poor, misguided alien. The 3D craze was brief in the 1980s and the output quality was questionable, but the run was fun for all the wrong reasons. Among Friday the 13th part III, Jaws 3D, and Parasite, was AMITYVILLE 3D and the Grue-Crew are ready to investigate all the shenanigans. The film is from accomplished director Richard Fleisher and the cast includes Tony Roberts, Tess Harper, Candy Clark, and Robert Joy. And, in an early role, Meg Ryan appears alongside Lori Loughlin. The film has an unjust bad reputation, but it's much better then you'd expect. Some of the effects are laughable, while others are downright creepy... and always in your face! The Grue-Crew tackle the early Italian horror film THE VAMPIRE AND THE BALLERINA (1960, L'amante del vampiro) from director Renato Polselli. This is a first watch for each of the crew: Bill, Daphne, Doc, and Jeff. Walter Brandi makes for an interesting vampire appearing mostly in a oddly effective monster mask while Maria Luisa Rolando fills the role of Countess Aldo - also a vampire. Much of the film is reminiscent of the Dracula story but set near Rome, Italy, shot in the spectacular castle of Artena in 1959. In the story, Baba Yaga (Carroll Baker) is a mysterious witch occupying a creepy presumably abandoned mansion who sets her eyes on Valentina for a secretive agenda she may, or may not, share with the audience. Boris Karloff! Peter Lorre! The Boogie Man Will Get You (1942) is one of Karloff's Columbia pictures horror pictures from the 1940s. Each of these films, with the exception of The Black Room, has Boris in the role of a mad scientist; however, with Boogie Man, the film allows Karloff of Peter Lorre the opportunity to parody the genre and have a great time doing so. Chad picks the direct-to-video Eighties "treasure," THE DEAD NEXT DOOR (1989). The then teenage director, J.R. Bookwalter, truly accomplishes something remarkable given his age and his choice of film stock: Super-8 film. Is the film any good? Well, that's the debate. The practical special effects are quite enjoyable and bloody, quite possibly making the film and the viewing experience what it is. Technically, however, the dialog is cringe, the acting is amateurish, the editing even more so. The groovy opening vampire scenes are quickly replaced with a lack-luster crew of space jockeys as they encounter a beautiful alien looking into the distance at scene cut from a little known Pilipino sci-fi film. The creatures include vampire cavemen, lobster men, bat men, and dinosaurs borrowed from other films. Wahoo! It's as bad as it sounds, yet, it just may be Al Adamson's best film. The movie begins with an entertaining, albeit goofy-looking, pointy-nosed kaiju Moguera. Somehow this robot giant monster still works in its own way and the Grue-Crew have their fun with all the shenanigans.
