Not Even a Hint (Ephesians 5:3) – Study 128
What does it mean for a Christian to live a holy life? In Ephesians 5:3, the apostle Paul gives one of the most striking commands in the New Testament: there should not even be a hint of sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among believers. As citizens of God’s Kingdom, our lives are meant to reflect the holiness, purity, and righteousness of our King. In this Christ-centered Bible study on Ephesians 5:2, Nathan Johnson explores Paul’s profound imagery of aroma, sacrifice, and the life of love that reflects Jesus Christ. The apostle declares that Christ “loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God,” and this message unpacks how believers are called to live that same sacrificial, Spirit-empowered love in a world that may reject it. Walking in Love Requires Living Out of Christ (Ephesians 5:2) – Study 125
What does it mean to "walk in love" as Paul commands in Ephesians 5:2? In this verse-by-verse Bible study, Nathan Johnson unpacks the radical nature of agapē love—a love that is not passive, emotional, or circumstantial, but a steadfast, sacrificial commitment modeled after Christ Himself. Paul's command to "walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us" reveals that biblical love is not measured by our comfort or preference, but by the extravagance of God's own self-giving love. This message explores five defining characteristics of agapē love and shows why walking in love is only possible when we live out of union with Christ, who is love. If you've ever wondered how Christian love differs from the world's version—or felt the gap between how you love and how Christ loves—this Ephesians 5:2 exposition will challenge and equip you to pursue a love that costs something.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 125» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. You Are God's Beloved Child … and why this changes everything (Ephesians 5:1) – Study 124
In Ephesians 5:1, the Apostle Paul makes a stunning declaration about our identity in Christ—we are God's beloved children, adopted as true heirs with full access to the Father's love and affection. In this Bible study, Nathan Johnson unpacks what it means to be God's cherished child and how this transformative truth should shape the way we live, worship, and walk with Jesus. If you've ever questioned your worth, struggled to believe God truly delights in you, or wondered what it means to be loved by the Father, this expositional teaching will ground you in the unchanging reality of your adoption in Christ. Whether you're studying Ephesians verse-by-verse or seeking to deepen your understanding of your identity as a Christian, this message will help you grasp the profound privilege and practical implications of being called God's beloved child. The Secret to Imitating Christ (Ephesians 5:1) – Study 123
What does Paul really mean when he commands believers to be “imitators of God” in Ephesians 5:1? Is Christian living about striving harder to act like Jesus—or something far deeper? In this Christ-centered teaching, Nathan explains why imitating Christ is impossible apart from Christ Himself and why true imitation must flow from divine impartation, not human effort. This message unpacks the gospel logic behind Ephesians 5:1, exposing the difference between external behavior modification and genuine spiritual transformation, and offers three essential reminders for anyone who desires to live an authentic Christian life shaped by the indwelling life of Jesus Christ. Always and in All Ways a Christian (Ephesians 4:17–32) – Study 122
What does it mean to be a Christian in every part of life—not just in belief, but in conduct, character, and conviction? In this Christ-centered Bible teaching from Ephesians 4, Nathan Johnson takes a big-picture look at the call to live as Christians always and in all ways, showing how the gospel should radically reshape our words, actions, thoughts, and motives. Throughout the message, we examine Paul’s vision of spiritual maturity and are reminded that Jesus Christ must be the center of the believer’s life.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 122» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. You Can’t Live Like Christ Without Christ (Ephesians 4:31-32) – Study 121
In Ephesians 4:31–32, the apostle Paul draws a sharp contrast between the old life shaped by sin and the new life formed by Christ, calling believers to put away bitterness, wrath, anger, malice, and unforgiveness, and to instead live in kindness, tenderness, and Christ-like forgiveness. In this in-depth Bible study, Nathan Johnson walks through Paul’s two contrasting lists—what must be put off and what must be put on—and shows that genuine Christian transformation is not achieved through self-effort but through the indwelling life of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit. This teaching helps Christians understand how the gospel reshapes the heart, how forgiveness flows from Christ’s forgiveness of us, and how a life centered on Jesus produces practical holiness for the glory of God.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 121» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. A Sobering Call to Holy Living (Ephesians 4:30) – Study 120
As Christians, we are not only image-bearers of the living God, but His Holy Spirit also indwells us. In this episode, we examine Paul’s sobering exhortation in Ephesians 4:30 to “not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,” exploring what this command actually means for everyday Christian living. Rather than treating grief of the Spirit as an abstract theological idea, we look at how our attitudes, words, relationships, and daily choices either align with—or resist—the life and character of Jesus Christ living within us. What does it mean to be sealed by the Spirit for the day of redemption, and how should that reality shape the way we live, speak, forgive, and walk in holiness? This teaching invites believers into deeper intimacy, Spirit-empowered obedience, and a Christ-centered life marked not by self-effort, but by surrendered dependence upon the indwelling Spirit of God.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 120» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. What is coming out of your life? (Ephesians 4:29) – Study 119
Every word we speak reveals what’s flowing from our hearts. In Ephesians 4:29, Paul exhorts believers to let no corrupt talk come out of their mouths, but only what builds up and gives grace to those who hear. Our speech is meant to reflect the transforming power of Jesus Christ—words that encourage, strengthen, and point others to Him. In this study, Nathan Johnson unpacks the biblical call to use our tongues for edification, showing how Spirit-filled communication becomes a powerful testimony of God’s work within us.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 119» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. Always with something to share (Ephesians 4:28) – Study 118
Always with something to share: the Christian's call to work and giving. As believers, we’re not called to take but to give. In Ephesians 4:28, Paul calls Christians to abandon the old life of idleness and selfish gain and instead work diligently with their hands so they always have something to share with those in need. True Christian stewardship and generosity flow from a transformed heart—a life centered on Jesus Christ that labors not for self but for His glory. In this study, we explore what it means to work hard for the Lord, live as channels of God’s provision, and reflect His heart of giving in a world that constantly takes.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 118» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. Put on the New (Ephesians 4:24) – Study 112
The prophet Isaiah called Jesus our “robe of righteousness”—the clothing we must wear if we desire to live holy, godly, and righteous. In Ephesians 4:24, Paul uses the same clothing language to give the final aspect of what it means to “learn Christ”—that as we put off sin, so too we must put on Christ. In short, our lives are not our own and we must be marked by His life, righteousness, and holiness. Put Off the Old (Ephesians 4:22) – Study 110
Paul says that we, as believers, must “learn Christ”—but what does that mean? Paul answers with three specifics—the first being to put off the old man (the corrupt sinful, selfish nature we all have prior to Christ). The Depth of Depravity (Ephesians 4:17-19) – Study 108
There is a great depth of depravity in the lives of unbelievers. And while selfishness and sin once marked our lives (in the past), it should no longer be a part of how we live. In Ephesians 4:17–19, Paul describes the old life (and the current life of unbelievers) and boldly argues that this is NOT how we are to live. We are, as Paul exhorts, to put off this former way of living because we have been clothed with Christ.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 108» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. The Growth of the Body (Ephesians 4:16) – Study 107
There is a beautiful paradox with the body of Christ—Jesus supplies everything we need for life and godliness, yet we as the body are to build each other up in love, causing the growth of the body. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4.15–16 that Jesus is the head of the Church, but he exhorts the body to be abundantly supplied by Christ to function, grow, and mature as the body is called to be. In this study, Nathan walks through the passage and encourages us to think and live as a community of believers, rather than as individuals that go to church together.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 107» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. The Motives and Manner of the Message (Ephesians 4:15) – Study 106
Truth should mark our lives and lips as Christians. We are called to know the truth, be grounded upon the truth, and proclaim the truth. Yet, truth without love is not true truth, just as love without truth is not true love. In Ephesians 4:15, Paul declares that truth is to find its permanent residence in love—and as Christians, our lives and lips must have an accuracy of both truth and love. In short, the motives and manner is just as important as the message.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 106» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. Back and Forth, Here and There (Ephesians 4:14–15) – Study 105
In contrast to the maturity and growth we as Christians are to have in Christ Jesus, Paul warns believers that they should not be immature, unstable, and gullible. In this message from Ephesians 4:14–15, Nathan Johnson talks about how easy it is to be tossed back and forth while being blown here and there, how such a life is not fitting for Christians, and the solution so that we never have to.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 105» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. There is one goal and focus for the Church—Jesus Christ Himself! In Ephesians 4:13, Paul describes the goal in three ways, but the focus is the same. In this study, Nathan Johnson dives into the passage and talks about Paul’s heart and desire for the body of Christ and how we as the Church are to be unified in the faith and grow in the full knowledge of Jesus, mature unto the perfect man, and be measured according to the stature of the fullness of Christ.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 104» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. The Perfect man (Ephesians 4:13) – Study 103
Scripture makes a clear and bold statement: Jesus is the perfect man … and everything is measured against the standard of Christ. This is a profound reality for the Church (the body of Christ)—for it means that Jesus and His Word is the standard for growth and maturity as the Church. We must be measured against Him.In this study of Ephesians 4:13, we investigate the primary goal for the body of Christ and discover the only way it is possible to live such an impossible life.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 103» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. Waiters at the Table (Ephesians 4:12) – Study 102
Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4:12–13 that God’s desire for the Church is to grow up and be built into a body that is mature and measured by the stature of Christ. And this “building up the body” process happens, according to Paul, when every believer is equipped and in active ministry. In this message, Nathan examines Ephesians 4:12 and what it means for every Christian to be a “waiter at the table” for the work of Christ and His Kingdom.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 102» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. A Gift to the Church (Ephesians 4:11) – Study 101
Jesus has given a gift to His body—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. But what are they and how do they function today? In this study from Ephesians 4:11, Nathan explores these five areas, how they might be different today, and explains why God gave them to the Church. This message is bound to step on some toes, but will ultimately point all of us to the Giver of the gift, Christ Jesus.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 101» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. The Humility and Exaltation of Christ (Ephesians 4:8-10) – Study 100
Christ has ascended! While Christians give a lot of focus to the death and resurrection of Christ, we nod our heads at His ascension. Yet, contained in the ascension of Jesus is His exaltation, coronation, and a revelation of His majestic supremacy! Join Nathan Johnson in this study of Ephesians 4:8–10 as we examine Paul’s parenthetical statement about the majesty and preeminence of Christ Jesus in the context of Him giving gifts to the Church. Your Gift of Grace (Ephesians 4:7) – Study 99
You have received the ultimate gift from Jesus Christ—His grace! While many of us think of one aspect of grace (salvation from sin), we miss what Peter calls the “manifold wonder of grace”—the many layers and characteristics of His grace. Join Nathan Johnson in this study as we explore Ephesians 4:7 and Paul’s declaration that every Christian has received the fullness of grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift.Watch the video version of the study on YouTubeSee the notes for this study---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 99» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and the ministry of Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. Symphony of the Saints (Ephesians 4:1-6) – Study 98
A symphony is a tremendous metaphor for the body of Christ. Though we are all unique members (instruments) of the orchestra, we all have one song we are playing. As Christians, we are called to live in unity with one another—a symphony of the saints. As we dive back into Ephesians 4, Nathan uses this study as a review of Ephesians 4:1–6 to set the context for our future studies. As he reminds us, we are not called to uniformity but to true Jesus-focused unity as the Church. ---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 98» Join the Deeper Christian community and receive the Deeper Digest each Saturday—which includes all the quotes, articles, podcasts, and resources from Nathan and Deeper Christian from the week to help you grow spiritually. Singularity of Sight (Ephesians 4:4-6) – Study 96
We, as the body of Christ, are to have a singular focus on Jesus Christ. While the modern church is marked by division, denomination, and being divisive, Paul calls the church to guard and protect the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. In this message, Nathan gives an overview of Ephesians 4:4-6 and examines the seven times Paul uses the term “one” in the passage. This message is an important one for our day as Paul calls the church into greater unity, integrity, and living in “one accord.”---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 96Download the study notes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-096/

You Are Called to Love and Unity (Ephesians 4:2-3) – Study 95
Paul exhorts believers in Ephesians 4:2-3 to be marked by love and unity with one another. If we are called to the high calling of Christ, we must be marked by His love and life—which means the Christian life cannot be lived in a vacuum, rather it must be lived in relationship and community. In this study, we examine what it means to bear with one another in love and to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 95Download the study notes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-095/

Called to Humility (Ephesians 4:2) – Study 91
You have a calling in your life, which is to be conformed in the image of Christ. Knowing about your calling is insufficient; we must live it out. As such, your life must be tested and proven against the perfect standard of Jesus Christ. In this study from Ephesians 4:2-3, we examine humility—the first of Paul’s five initial tests that our lives must reflect if we hope to walk worthy of the calling with which we have been called.---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 91Download the study notes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-091/

The Lord is my Shepherd (Ephesians 4:1) – Study 88
Jesus is Lord! But what does that mean practically for our lives as believers? If we are going to truly understand and embrace God’s calling on our lives, we must first embrace the One who has called us. In this study, we look at God being our Lord and Shepherd and the three things these two characteristics of God have in common for our daily lives as Christians.---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 88Download the study notes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-088/

A Prisoner IN the Lord (Ephesians 4:1) – Study 87
While we know Paul was a prisoner of Rome for the sake of the Gospel, he boldly declares that He is a prison IN the Lord—that his position and focus is Jesus Christ. In order for us to have a proper understanding of God’s calling in our lives, we, like Paul, need to see ourselves in a proper position of humility, submission, and surrender to the One who has called us. In this expositional message from Ephesians 4:1, Nathan Johnson explores what it means to be a prisoner IN the Lord and how that changes everything for a Christian.---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 87Download the study notes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-087/

Recapping the Outflow of the Inflow (Ephesians 1-3) – Study 86
I recorded this mini-series from Ephesians 4:1-3 in the studio. As such they are a bit shorter and have a slightly different tone than our normal studies. To lay a foundation for this ten-part mini-series, I gave a recap of the previous study I gave, The Practical Outflow of Our Position in Christ. As we begin this new mini-series from Ephesians 4 examining God’s call in our lives, we first need to see the connection between chapters 1-3 and chapters 4-6. Without recognizing that the outflow of the Christian life is based upon God’s inflow, we will either live with hypocrisy or passivity. Join me in this overview message looking at the importance of knowing all of Ephesians to properly understand God’s calling in the life of a believer.---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 86Download the study notes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-086/

The Practical Outflow of Our Position in Christ (Ephesians 4:1) – Study 85
The Christian life is all about our position in Christ. Yet many Christians will either know their position and not live it out or they try to produce “religious activities” out of their own strength and resource without having the life of Christ within. Both can be dangerous. In Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians, he spends half the letter addressing their position in Christ, and then exhorts them to live it out in the everyday moments of their lives. Join Nathan in this expositional study as he talks about the practical outflow of our position in Christ as we begin to study the second half of the book.---------------------Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 85Download the study notes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-085/

Filled with all the Fullness of God (Ephesians 3:19) – Study 81
