This eclectic selection traverses a broad spectrum of genres, blending experimental drone, post-rock, and avant-garde jazz with Australian indie and classic rock. The tracklist balances contemporary works from artists like Big Brave and DEAFKIDS against archival gems, including a Miles Davis session outtake and a live 1988 performance by The Dream Syndicate. By moving between atmospheric soundscapes, lo-fi folk narratives, and guitar-driven melodies, the collection creates a varied listening experience that highlights both international alternative movements and independent song-writing. This selection offers a deep dive into the experimental and the atmospheric, weaving together a tapestry of psych-rock, avant-garde textures, and dry wit. It is a sequence that thrives on contrast—moving from heavy, hypnotic rhythms and swampy voodoo to lo-fi charm and the minimalist beauty of contemporary compositions. The journey transitions seamlessly between moments of dense, sonic saturation and stripped-back introspection. Whether it is the gritty electronics or the intricate arrangements, the tracks are united by a shared sense of unconventional exploration with a hypnotic groove attached. Graney and Moore are back with a new album at the end of next month. The first offering from the release comments on the perils of success. It’s highly unlikely that the vast amount of music in this playlist will achieve the levels of success or recognition they deserve. As Mr Graney opines perhaps that success or indeed recognition is a distraction from the creative process and exposes one to all sorts of nastiness/strangeness. This set moves through solo sketches, trio interplay, and full ensemble fire, tracing acoustic and electric textures across studio, live, and archival formats. It opens with flowing piano, moves into exploratory trio improvisation, and shifts between guitar meditations, reworked soul and rock standards, and tightly arranged ensemble writing. Abstract textures and ambient passages emerge mid-set, followed by groove-based phrasing, UK archival material, and layered acoustic duets. The final track dips into the archive for a rhythm-forward piece built around bass and percussion. What is cool? What is trendy? Who decides these things? In the context of this show what constitutes “Different”? In simplistic terms people send me things, or I buy them, based on past listening experience. I listen to them, if they sound sufficiently interesting, or they tug at some emotional string somewhere in the brain or heart, then they get on the show. This music sounds good to me, not stuck in some mainstream dreamed up in a committee meeting somewhere. It feels like Miles Davis Birth of the Cool did when I first heard it, recognisable as jazz but somehow completely unique in its’ construction of delivery. So this is “cool” music, or is it?
