Flat River Medical Helping Build Healthcare Careers in Montcalm County
Flat River Medical Helping Build Healthcare Careers in Montcalm County Healthcare careers continue to be one of the fastest-growing opportunities in Michigan, and Flat River Medical is helping students across Montcalm County step into the medical field quickly and affordably. On this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, hosts Duane Weed and Kara Stevens sit down with owner Melody Teagarden to talk about how her business started, the growing need for healthcare workers, and how students can begin a new career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in as little as two weeks. Flat River Medical – About Melody shares how her background as a nurse and educator inspired her to open Flat River Medical in Greenville in 2015. Since then, the program has expanded to additional locations in Paris and Alma, helping students throughout central Michigan gain hands-on healthcare training. One of the biggest takeaways from the episode is how accessible CNA training can be. Flat River Medical offers both daytime and evening classes, making it possible for working adults, high school students, and career changers to enter the healthcare field. Students as young as 16 years old can begin training and prepare for careers in nursing homes, hospitals, and healthcare facilities. The podcast also highlights funding opportunities through Michigan Works, which may help qualifying students cover tuition costs for CNA training programs. Melody encourages anyone interested in healthcare to reach out and explore the options available. Beyond healthcare training, the episode also dives into life in Montcalm County, local businesses, community connections, and favorite spots like Anderson & Girls Orchards. If you are considering a healthcare career, looking for a career change, or know someone searching for a meaningful profession with strong job opportunities, this episode is packed with useful information and local inspiration. Howard City History: Downtown Stories & Main Street
Howard City History: South Main Street Stories & Downtown Life Howard City History: The story of Howard City, Michigan continues as the Discover Montcalm Podcast wraps up its three-part series exploring the rich history of this small but vibrant Montcalm County community. Hosted by Duane Weed, this episode features local historian Don Bauman, whose firsthand knowledge and family history bring the south side of downtown Howard City to life—one building, one business, and one story at a time. Howard City History: A Walk Down South Main Street In this final installment, the focus shifts to the south side of Main Street, where buildings served not just as businesses—but as the heartbeat of the community. One of the earliest landmarks was the Congregational Church, which stood as more than a place of worship. Before Howard City had a gymnasium or auditorium, this church hosted high school graduations until 1934. Over time, it transitioned into a Seventh-day Adventist church, and even temporarily served multiple congregations after a fire destroyed the Methodist church in the 1940s. Downtown Businesses That Defined a Generation As Howard City grew, so did its downtown: A new post office built in the 1950s marked progress and expansion Appliance stores brought radios and televisions into homes for the first time A tailor shop and dry goods store served everyday needs The local bank building anchored financial activity A Chevrolet dealership once stood proudly on Main Street Across the street, grocery stores, hardware shops, and small retailers formed a tightly connected business district where everyone knew everyone. Howard City history: A Community Connected by Wartime Letters One of the most remarkable stories shared in this episode is about Ralph Jennings, who kept Howard City connected during World War II. From his office, he created and mailed a monthly newsletter to over 300 local servicemen and women stationed around the world. These letters didn’t just share updates—they connected soldiers to each other, sometimes leading to unexpected reunions overseas. It’s a powerful reminder of how a small town like Howard City made a global impact during a critical time in history. Saturday Nights in Howard City Downtown Howard City wasn’t just about business—it was about community life. Saturday nights were the highlight of the week: Families gathered to shop and socialize Kids watched free movies projected on buildings Crowds filled sidewalks and benches Locals gathered around storefront TVs—some of the first in town It was simple. It was local. And it was unforgettable. The Stories That Stay With Us – Howard City history From barber shops and bakeries to theaters and bowling alleys, every building had a story—and every story adds to the identity of Howard City, Michigan. These stories remind us why preserving local history matters. They connect generations and give meaning to the places we pass every day. Howard City History-Downtown Stories
Howard City History | Downtown Stories from Montcalm County Howard City History: The rich history of Howard City comes alive through the voices of those who lived it. In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sits down with longtime local historian Don Bauman to explore the buildings, businesses, and stories that shaped downtown Howard City. A Walk Through Historic Downtown Howard City – northside of West Edgerton Street Howard City has long been a hub of activity in Montcalm County, with its downtown serving as the center of commerce, community, and connection. One of the most notable buildings in town dates back to around 1900—the former Golden Hotel, now known by many through its modern identity as Latitudes. Before that stood the Coburn Exchange, a three-story wooden hotel once considered one of the finest north of Grand Rapids, complete with a ballroom and dining hall. Like many historic towns, fire played a role in reshaping the landscape. Several original buildings were lost, only to be rebuilt and repurposed over time. Howard City History: Industry, Innovation, and Everyday Life Howard City wasn’t just about small shops—it was also a place of industry and innovation. The Wolverine factory brought manufacturing jobs to the area, while appliance stores introduced new technology like televisions during the 1950s boom. Local newspapers were printed right in town, including the Howard City Record, keeping residents informed and connected. Even healthcare had its place in downtown, with doctors’ offices located above storefronts—sometimes requiring patients to climb long staircases for care. A Community Shaped by Service One of the most powerful parts of Howard City’s history is its connection to military service. During World War II, nearly every home along Main Street had a family member serving in the military. From pilots witnessing historic battles like Midway to families with multiple children in service, the sacrifices made by this small community reflect a deep sense of duty and patriotism. Education and Community Roots – Howard City History Howard City has long valued education. Early graduation ceremonies were held in local churches before larger school facilities were built. Class sizes were small, often between 12 and 20 students, reflecting the close-knit nature of the community. Today, those roots continue to shape the identity of the area. Preserving Montcalm County History Stories like these are exactly why the Discover Montcalm Podcast exists—to preserve local history and share it with future generations. From buildings that have stood for over a century to businesses that have come and gone, Howard City’s story is a vital part of Montcalm County’s heritage. CAD and Engineering at the Montcalm Area Career Center
CAD and Engineering at the Montcalm Area Career Center Preparing the Next Generation of Designers, Engineers, and Problem Solvers In Montcalm County, education isn’t just about textbooks—it’s about preparing students for real careers, real challenges, and real opportunities. That mission comes to life every day at the Montcalm Area Career Center, where students from across the county gain hands-on experience in career and technical programs. On a recent episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host and producer Duane Weed sat down inside the Digital Art’s podcast studio with CAD and Engineering instructor Mike Johnson to talk about a program that is shaping future designers, engineers, and innovators right here in Montcalm County. What makes the conversation even more unique? Duane Weed also teaches the Digital Arts program at the Career Center, meaning the podcast itself becomes a real-world learning environment—with students running cameras, directing the show, and producing content behind the scenes. A Program Built on Real-World Experience Mr. Johnson brings decades of industry and education experience to the classroom. After earning multiple degrees from Ferris State University, he spent nearly a decade working with architectural and engineering firms in the Grand Rapids area before transitioning into education. That industry background shapes how the CAD and Engineering program operates today. “When I was working in industry, I realized I was teaching new employees skills they should have already known,” Johnson explained. “That’s what pushed me toward education.” Today, he focuses on helping students build those skills early—long before they enter the workforce. Starting with the Fundamentals: CAD Students typically begin the program as juniors, spending their first year learning the foundations of design through CAD (Computer-Aided Design). But before jumping into computer software, Johnson starts with something simple: pencil and paper. Understanding traditional drafting helps students develop visualization skills and learn how designs are structured. From there, students move into professional software such as AutoCAD, where they begin turning ideas into digital drawings. As the year progresses, those designs can become real physical objects through modern manufacturing tools like: 3D printing (additive manufacturing) Laser cutting Plasma cutting Students don’t just design objects—they produce them. And sometimes, those designs start with requests from local businesses or community members. Second-Year Students Move Into Engineering During their second year, students take the next step into engineering design. Using professional software like SOLIDWORKS, they begin working in a 3D parametric design environment, allowing them to create complex models that mirror what engineers use in industry. Second-year students also participate heavily in competitions and team projects that simulate real engineering environments. The focus shifts from simply drawing designs to solving problems. Engineering Competitions Build Teamwork One of the most exciting parts of the program is participation in statewide engineering competitions. Students regularly compete through organizations like: Square One Education Network Michigan Industrial Technology Education Society These competitions challenge students to design and build innovative solutions—often centered around vehicles, robotics, or autonomous technology. Projects may involve: Designing electric vehicles Building autonomous systems Programming sensors and controls Creating full engineering presentations But the biggest lesson isn’t just technical. It’s teamwork. Just like in real engineering firms, students must collaborate, debate ideas, and solve problems together. CAD and Engineering at the Montcalm Area Career Center Learning Beyond the Classroom While technical skills are important, Johnson emphasizes that some of the most valuable lessons students learn are soft skills. Students develop: Communication skills Professional presentation abilities Problem solving strategies Team collaboration Confidence They also interact with judges, businesses, and community members during competitions and public events. Those experiences help prepare them for the transition from high school to the professional world. CAD and Engineering at the Montcalm Area Career Center Real Community Connections One unique feature of the CAD and Engineering program is its connection to the local community. Students regularly take their work outside the classroom, participating in events throughout Montcalm County such as: Old Fashioned Days Edmore Potato Festival At these events, students demonstrate 3D printing and manufacturing technology while interacting with the public. Even better, local organizations and businesses often bring real projects to the classroom for students to design. That means the work students complete isn’t hypothetical—it serves real needs in the community. Multiple Career Pathways Students who complete the program leave with a wide range of future opportunities. Possible paths include: Engineering or architecture degrees Technical drafting careers Manufacturing and industrial design Military technical fields Direct entry into the workforce Some students continue their education at universities like Ferris State University, while others move directly into industry with valuable experience already on their resume. And sometimes, students discover new career paths they never considered before. A Place to Explore Your Future Programs like CAD and Engineering at the Montcalm Area Career Center give students something incredibly valuable—the opportunity to explore careers before they commit to them. As Johnson puts it: “Come here and see if it’s something you like. If it is, great. If it isn’t, you’ve learned that before spending years and money in college.” That kind of discovery can make all the difference. Papa Gnome — Spreading Joy Across Montcalm County
Papa Gnome — Spreading Joy Across Montcalm County Papa Gnome: “I just take the negative and try to make it into a positive.” Papa Gnome: From Health Struggles to Healing Smiles In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sits down with a local legend who is impossible to miss but whose story is even more colorful than his outfits. Meet Gerald Wellman, known to many in West Michigan as Papa Gnome. What started as a difficult season of life—marked by a diagnosis of actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous skin cells) and the onset of PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)—became the catalyst for a movement of joy. Struggling with depression during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gerald found inspiration in a neighbor’s nickname for him. If people were going to call him a “garden gnome,” he decided he was going to be the best one they’d ever seen. He began crafting his own iconic gnome hats to protect his health and lift the spirits of those around him. “I just wanted to make somebody smile just so I would feel better… just a simple hat, and young people come up and say, ‘Oh, you just made my year.'” Papa Gnome is more than just an outfit: A Heart for Giving While Papa Gnome is famous for having over 200 handmade hats and an outfit for nearly every day of the year, his true impact is felt through his philanthropy. Papa Gnome doesn’t just wear the hats; he uses his platform to support the community that supports him. In this episode, we discuss his work with: I Am Third Kids Meals: Helping fight childhood hunger in our region. Cannonsville Critters: Supporting local animal rescue and welfare. Hearts of Ionia: Donating his time as Santa Claus for daycares and AFC homes. Trufant Santa: Bringing the magic of Christmas to the “Stump Fence Capital” for the last four years. Turning Negativity into Light Gerald Wellman shares a powerful message about handling “haters” and online negativity. When someone called him a “jester” as an insult, he simply decided to make a jester outfit. It is a masterclass in resilience and choosing happiness over bitterness. Local Landmarks Mentioned: Meijer in Greenville: The site of many “Gnome sightings” and community hugs. Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival: Where Papa Gnome’s tie-dye outfits stole the show. Trufant, Michigan: Home of the annual Christmas festivities. West Michigan Businesses Are Using AI to Save Time and Grow
West Michigan Businesses Are Using ChatGPT and AI to Save Time and Grow West Michigan businesses are already using ChatGPT and AI—and it’s not just big companies. Artificial intelligence is no longer just a buzzword—it’s becoming a practical, everyday tool for businesses across West Michigan and the world. On this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed talks with Steven Rainwater of Business Growth Engine about how local businesses are already using AI tools like ChatGPT to save time, stay organized, and grow—without needing a tech background. ChatGPT – AI Is Becoming a Daily Business Tool for West Michigan businesses Steven explains that many people don’t even realize how often they’re already interacting with AI. From replacing traditional Google searches to drafting emails, organizing ideas, and creating content, AI is quietly changing how work gets done. For small businesses in Montcalm County and West Michigan, this can mean: Faster content creation Better organization Clearer messaging More time to focus on customers West Michigan Businesses – Free vs Paid AI Tools The conversation breaks down the difference between free AI tools and paid versions. Steven encourages beginners to start free, learn how to ask better questions (prompts), and then consider upgrading once AI becomes part of their workflow. Paid versions allow users to: Upload files and documents Create long-term projects Get more consistent, business-specific results Why Human Oversight Still Matters AI isn’t perfect. Steven and Duane both emphasize that AI works best when paired with human judgment. It can move fast—but it still needs someone to verify, refine, and personalize the output. Used correctly, AI becomes a time-saving assistant, not a replacement for creativity or decision-making. AI Beyond the Office The episode also explores how AI is helping people outside of business: Reviewing bank statements and subscriptions Planning meals based on what’s at home Organizing schedules and priorities It’s about working smarter—not harder. Helping West Michigan businesses Move Forward This episode launches a new AI-focused series on the Discover Montcalm Podcast, aimed at helping local businesses, entrepreneurs, and community members understand how to use modern tools in practical ways. Karli joined me in the DW Video studio in Howard City, Michigan, and it was a full-circle moment. The last time I saw her was back in 2012 when she was a student involved in video productions at Greenville High School. Thirteen years later, she’s back—this time as a small business owner serving up cookies, cupcakes, breads, pretzels, and plenty of laughs. From Grandma’s Kitchen to Cozy Bear Bakery Karli grew up in the Greenville–Rockford area, and her love for baking started early—right alongside her grandma. While she wasn’t allowed near the hot oven, she was trusted with mixing, rolling, and learning the joy of feeding people. That spark never went away. Fast forward to April 2025, when Karli officially launched Cozy Bear Bakery, turning her passion into a business rooted in comfort, creativity, and community. What’s on the Menu at Cozy Bear Bakery? Cozy Bear Bakery offers a wide variety of homemade treats, including: Classic and specialty cookies (chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, no-bakes, M&M, and more) Custom decorated sugar cookies for birthdays, weddings, baby showers, and events Cupcakes and cakes Homemade breads Chocolate-dipped and seasoned pretzels (including cinnamon and ranch flavors) Some custom cookie orders—like holiday sets—can take six hours or more, and they disappear just as fast as they’re made. Custom Orders & A Few Funny Requests Karli loves creating custom designs for special occasions, whether it’s a family reunion, a school event, or a bachelorette party (we’ll keep that one PG-13). If you can dream it up, there’s a good chance she can bake it. She also takes food allergies seriously. With a peanut-allergic sister, Karli customizes recipes when needed and avoids almond extract altogether—making safety just as important as flavor. Local, Mobile, and Community-Focused Based in Gowen, Michigan, Karli currently offers pickup and delivery throughout the Greenville area and surrounding communities in Montcalm County—and yes, she’ll come to Howard City too (I feel special). Looking ahead, she’s excited to get involved in: Local craft shows Farmers markets Community events throughout Montcalm County Where to Find Cozy Bear Bakery You can find Karli and her mouth-watering creations on: Facebook Instagram Just search Cozy Bear Bakery (that’s Cozy with a C). Remember—Christmas calories don’t count… and neither do Cozy Bear Bakery’s (at least that’s the story we’re sticking with). Preserving Local Stories with Duane Weed
Duane Weed has been telling stories through a camera lens. Since 1984, Duane Weed has been telling stories through a camera lens. A Ferris State graduate (Class of 1983), Duane launched DW Video in 1984, building a career in video, media production, and visual storytelling long before “content creation” became a buzzword. Beginning in Morley, the business moved to Howard City in 1987, Duane understands Montcalm County not just as a place—but as a collection of people, histories, and lived experiences. That understanding led him to create the Discover Montcalm Podcast in 2002, a community-focused podcast dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of Montcalm County businesses, communities, attractions and residents. What makes Discover Montcalm different is its approach. This isn’t about soundbites or sales pitches. It’s about conversations. Duane sits down with business owners, nonprofit leaders, educators, tradespeople, community volunteers, and lifelong residents to uncover the person behind the sign. From interviews with organizations like the Montcalm County Road Commission, to conversations with veterans, service organizations, and everyday community members, each episode offers insight into the people who shape the county. Some guests have shared decades of history—stories that may have otherwise been lost. In a few cases, the podcast has become a lasting record of voices no longer with us. “That’s when it really hit me,” Duane says. “If I hadn’t interviewed that person, that story would be gone.” Podcast also reflects Duane Weed belief The podcast also reflects Duane’s belief that strong communities don’t thrive on their own. Montcalm County doesn’t have fences around its towns.. What happens in Edmore affects Carson City. What happens in Howard City matters to Greenville. By encouraging residents to learn about one another, Discover Montcalm creates connections that strengthen local culture and economic resilience. Today, the podcast continues to grow with the help of co-hosts like Kara Stevens and Dillinger, expanding the range of voices and perspectives. Episodes are recorded at DW Video and released weekly on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and at DiscoverMontcalmPodcast.com. Whether you’re a lifelong resident, a newcomer, a business owner, or someone with a story to tell—if you live in Montcalm County, you’re a potential guest. Edmore, Michigan: Growing Up Through Hitachi and Electrolux Closures and Community Comeback
Edmore, Michigan: Growing Up Through Hitachi and Electrolux Closures and Community Comeback. For Anthony Stickler, Edmore, Michigan isn’t just a hometown — it’s a lifelong story of community, change, and resilience. Anthony has lived in the Edmore area since 1971. Over that time, he’s seen Montcalm County at its best and at its most challenging. On episode 166 of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, Anthony shares a firsthand perspective on what it was like growing up in a small town, watching major employers rise and fall, and working alongside community leaders to help the county rebuild. Growing Up in a Small-Town Edmore When Anthony was growing up, Edmore was a place where people knew their neighbors and often stayed for generations. Many students started school together and graduated together. The town revolved around local industry, schools, churches, and Main Street businesses. A major part of Edmore’s identity was manufacturing. What later became Hitachi originally started as Union Carboloy in 1952, later merging with General Electric before becoming Hitachi. For decades, the plant was a cornerstone employer, shaping daily life and the local economy. Anthony remembers a time when industry felt stable and permanent — a time when people expected to work locally, raise families locally, and retire locally. When the Jobs Left: Hitachi and Electrolux That sense of permanence was shaken in the early 2000s. In 2004, Hitachi closed its Edmore-area plant. Just a short time later, Electrolux closed its Greenville facility between 2005 and 2006. The closures hit Montcalm County hard. Electrolux in Greenville (2005–06 closure): ~2,700 jobs lost. Hitachi Magnetics in Edmore (2004 closure): ~120 jobs lost. The ripple effects were felt across multiple communities and counties — from small businesses to schools to local services. Anthony was working with the Montcalm Economic Alliance during this period, alongside Franz Magnus and many others. The Alliance served as a critical bridge between businesses, workers, and local, state, and federal resources. “It was hectic,” Anthony recalls. Phone calls, paperwork, workforce retraining, and coordination with the state all happened at once. The focus wasn’t just replacing jobs, but helping people navigate an entirely new economic reality. Rebuilding Through Education and Collaboration One of the biggest parts of Montcalm County’s recovery was education and workforce development. Montcalm Community College played a major role, expanding programs to help displaced workers retrain quickly and realistically for new careers. Anthony emphasizes that recovery wasn’t easy or instant. Families were under pressure. Businesses had to adapt. Communities had to rethink what growth looked like. But collaboration — between educators, economic developers, local leaders, and residents — made a difference. Turning Loss Into Opportunity What could have remained empty factories instead became an opportunity. The Edmore, Michigan industrial area, particularly the Sunrise Industrial Park, hosts businesses like Ryan’s Equipment (forestry attachments), Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) (corrugated packaging), A&O Forklift, and the Edmore Department of Public Works, with past significant operations including the former Hitachi property being redeveloped for industrial use. Rather than letting setbacks define the county, Montcalm leaned into adaptability — finding new uses for old spaces and supporting diversified industry. Edmore Today: Growing Forward Together Fast forward to today, and Anthony sees real momentum — especially through Growing Edmore Together, a grassroots group of local businesses working hand-in-hand with the Downtown Development Authority. From summer music events to downtown revitalization efforts, the group is focused on community pride, foot traffic, and connection. Anthony is a strong believer that economic development and community development must go hand in hand. One shining example is the Edmore Potato Festival. Dating back decades, the festival has evolved into a true centerpiece event. With Main Street closed to traffic, kids’ activities on one end, car and tractor shows on the other, and neighbors reconnecting downtown, the festival captures what small-town life is all about. “It felt like a Hallmark movie,” Anthony says — a place where people run into friends, meet new neighbors, and celebrate where they live. A County Built on Strengths Anthony is quick to point out that Montcalm County has more going for it than many people realize: Strong industrial roots with modern manufacturing Growing tourism tied to trails like the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail and White Pine Trail Access to outdoor recreation through Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources Central location between major cities like Grand Rapids, Lansing, Mount Pleasant, and Big Rapids A growing number of festivals, events, and volunteer-driven initiatives Montcalm County also continues to see interest in secondary homes and outdoor recreation, bringing new visitors — and new investment — into the area. The Power of Getting Involved One of Anthony’s strongest messages is simple: community involvement matters. Volunteering builds skills, strengthens resumes, creates pride, and helps people feel connected. Whether it’s setting up barricades for a festival or serving on a board, involvement creates ownership — and ownership fuels growth. “Investment isn’t always money,” Anthony says. “Sometimes it’s blood, sweat, and tears.” Looking Ahead After seeing Edmore and Montcalm County through both good times and hard times, Anthony remains optimistic. The county has learned how to adapt, collaborate, and lean into its strengths. From local industry to community festivals to grassroots groups like Growing Edmore Together, Montcalm County continues to move forward — not by forgetting its past, but by learning from it. And as Anthony reminds us, the more people who step up and get involved, the stronger the future will be. Tony Gates: Rock Radio Stories
Tony Gates: Rock Radio Stories from Decades Behind the Mic, Sharing Music History, Legendary Artists, and the Community-Driven Spirit of WGLM 106.3 FM. For decades, Tony Gates has been a trusted voice in rock radio—introducing listeners to unforgettable music, legendary artists, and stories you simply won’t hear anywhere else. In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, Tony sits down with host Duane Weed and Kara Stevens to share the remarkable journey that shaped his career and why, after years in corporate radio, he’s found a true home at WGLM 106.3 FM in Greenville, Michigan. Tony Gates raised in a small town Born Anthony Eugene Gates and raised in the small town of Litchfield in Hillsdale County, Tony’s path into radio began almost by accident at Grand Valley State University. What started as a midnight college radio shift a few years later became a lifelong education in music—digging deep into the heart of rock and roll, and discovering artists organically, one record at a time. That curiosity opened doors few ever experience. Tony shares stories of driving legends like Frank Zappa, meeting Walter Cronkite, and spending time with icons including Paul McCartney, Bob Seger, George Harrison, and countless others. Rather than chasing celebrity, Tony’s approach was simple: treat artists like people. That authenticity became his trademark and carried him through a career spanning more than three decades on the air. After 37 years at a major rock station, Tony made a decision many broadcasters never do—he stepped away from corporate radio. What pulled him back? A radio station that reminded him why he fell in love with broadcasting in the first place. “I had my fill of corporate radio,” Tony explains. “WGLM felt different. The music library was deep, varied, and real.” Today, Tony hosts weekdays 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on WGLM 106.3 FM, a locally owned, community-focused station serving Greenville and West Michigan. It’s a place where music matters, local voices are valued, and radio still feels personal. Jim Aaron owner WGLM brings Tony Gates back to the airways That commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. In a November 21, 2025 Daily News article, WGLM Owner and General Manager Jim Aaron put it best: “Tony’s not just a broadcaster—he’s part of West Michigan’s identity. He has decades of experience, knows the community, and brings a kind of authenticity you simply can’t manufacture. We’re proud he chose us.” This episode isn’t just about radio history—it’s about community radio done right, the power of music, and why authenticity still matters. 🎧 Listen now and experience community radio the way it was meant to be. https://m1063.com/ Tune In Discover Montcalm Podcast Listen now on the Discover Montcalm Podcast and on Apple Podcasts, Pandora, iHeart, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Montcalm Community College celebrating 60 years
Montcalm Community College celebrating 60 years with Gary Haulk Montcalm Community College has played a vital role in shaping education, workforce development, and community life in Montcalm County for six decades. In Episode 164 of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sits down with Gary Haulk, Dean Emeritus of Montcalm Community College and author of Montcalm Community College: Creating Futures—Then, Now, and Always, to explore the rich and fascinating history of MCC. Gary was asked to write the official history of MCC as the college approached its 50th anniversary. What began as a research project turned into a multi-year journey through archives, interviews, and firsthand accounts from the people who helped build MCC from the ground up. The result is a deeply human story—one that blends facts, milestones, and personal narratives. From Feasibility Study to Community Anchor The story begins in the early 1960s, when Montcalm County leaders explored whether a community college could succeed locally. After town hall meetings and community outreach, voters approved the creation of Montcalm Community College on March 2, 1965. With no campus at first, MCC classes were held in churches, libraries, schools—and even unused cells at the county jail. The first students enrolled in vocational and nursing programs, laying the foundation for what would become a thriving institution. By 1967, MCC opened its permanent campus on the former Anderson farm, strategically located near the geographic center of the county. The Centurion mascot, inspired by Roman history and the campus atrium, soon followed—along with athletics, music programs, and a growing academic footprint. Leadership Through the Decades Gary walks listeners through the eras of MCC leadership, highlighting how each president shaped the college during their tenure: Don Fink – MCC’s founding president Cliff Badour – Expansion of academic and vocational programs Herb Stoutenberg – Creation of the MCC Foundation Don Burns – Community outreach, Heritage Village, Crystal the Mastodon, and the pivotal 1996 millage Bob Ferrantino – Student success, study abroad, and cultural enrichment Stacey Young – Leadership through COVID and the launch of student housing Dr. Bradley Barrick – Enrollment growth, housing expansion, and a bold new strategic vision Each era reflects the evolving needs of students and the community—demonstrating how MCC continues to adapt while staying true to its mission. MCC: More Than a College As a former dean and long-time educator at MCC, Gary shares why the college feels more like a family than an institution. Faculty know students by name. The college supports personal growth as much as academic success. And MCC remains deeply connected to the communities it serves. This episode is a must-listen for alumni, students, educators, and anyone interested in Montcalm County history. Montcalm Musicians Spotlight
Montcalm Musician Spotlight: Jim Wonsey & the Heartbeat of Local Music Montcalm Musicians Spotlight: Music runs deep in Montcalm County—and this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast proves it. In this Montcalm Musician Spotlight, I sit down with Jim Wonsey, longtime local musician and the driving force behind Tequila Roze Chilled, to talk about a lifetime of music, memories, and what it really means to play local. Jim’s journey started young—around five years old—when a certain guitar riff from Smoke on the Water lit a spark that never went out. From plastic toy guitars to real lessons in the Six Lakes area, from teenage garage bands to wedding receptions, festivals, and packed local bars, Jim’s story mirrors the path of so many musicians who grew up surrounded by sound and inspired by family. We talk about: Growing up in a musical family Forming bands as a teenager Balancing full-time work with weekend gigs Playing house bands and festival beer tents The evolution of Montcalm County’s live music scene Why live music still matters—even in a Netflix world Jim Wonsey also shares honest thoughts about how the music scene has changed since the 70s and 80s, what’s better today (no smoke-filled bars!), and why supporting local venues and musicians is more important than ever. From Frosty’s to festivals like the Edmore Potato Festival, Jim and Tequila Roze Chilled continue to keep live music alive across Montcalm County and beyond. If you love local music, local stories, and the people behind the sound—this episode is for you. 🎶 Support local music. Support local venues. Buy local. Little Rascals Wildlife Rescue in Montcalm County
Little Rascals Wildlife Rescue in Montcalm County In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sits down with Sara Dido, the founder of Little Rascals Wildlife Rescue, a growing wildlife rehabilitation effort based in the Howard City area. With Montcalm County surrounded by forests, fields, and plenty of Michigan wildlife, Sara’s work fills a major gap in the region — especially when it comes to caring for raccoons and other small mammals. Sara Dido – Little Rascals Wildlife Rescue Sara didn’t begin her journey expecting to become a wildlife rehabber. After moving from the Detroit area to West Michigan to study biology at Ferris State University, she discovered a family of orphaned raccoons living in her shed. With no nearby rescues accepting raccoons, she reached out to Wildheart Wildlife Rescue and became a sub-permittee, learning the skills needed to support orphaned and injured wildlife under a licensed rehabber. Today, Sara runs Little Rascals Wildlife Rescue while working through the process of securing 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. She specializes in small mammals—raccoons, opossums, squirrels, mice, and more—operating from a dedicated rehab room, outdoor enclosures, and an expanding volunteer network. In the interview, Sara walks us through the intake process, challenges of caring for wildlife, the importance of releasing animals back into their home region, and the many misconceptions people have about raccoons and rabies. She also shares what NOT to do when you find wildlife (such as feeding babies), explains safe rescue practices, and highlights the ecological value of animals many consider “nuisances.” Little Rascals Wildlife Rescue is quickly becoming an essential resource for Montcalm County and surrounding areas. As the organization grows, Sara hopes to expand her licensing to help additional species and continue working with local vets, communities, and other rescue centers. What Montcalm Is Thankful For in 2025
What Montcalm County Is Thankful For in 2025 — Discover Montcalm Podcast This time of year, it’s always good to slow down, take a breath, and think about the things we’re thankful for. In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, we’re talking all about gratitude—right here in Montcalm County. Montcalm Community Gratitude Hello, my name is Duane Weed, your host and producer, and I’m thankful for all of you who tune in each week to learn more about our amazing county. Personally, I’m thankful for my health… even if the ol’ check-engine light is starting to flicker on a little more these days. I’m thankful for my family, for the opportunity to work with young people as a Digital Arts instructor at the Montcalm Area Career Center, and for 41 years of creating media at DWVideo.com. I’m grateful I can still sit behind the drum kit, play the music I love, and worship my faith in God freely. Discover July 4th episode 142
July 4th – What Does Independence Day Mean to You? July 4th – Welcome to this special Independence Day episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast! I’m Duane, your host and producer. Today, we’re setting aside the fireworks, cookouts, and parades for just a moment to ask a deeper question: July 4th What does the it mean to you?Is it more than just sparklers and backyard barbecues?Does it stir memories, a sense of pride, tough questions, or even hope for the future? In this episode, we take a casual stroll back through history to explore why we celebrate July 4th in the first place. It might surprise you to learn that the big vote for independence actually happened on July 2nd, 1776! In fact, John Adams believed that July 2nd would be celebrated as America’s great holiday. July 4th, 1776 But history had other plans. July 4th, 1776 is the day the final version of the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted — the day the words were approved, made public, and sent out to the world. Here’s a fun fact — most of the signatures weren’t added until August! But July 4th was printed on the top of the document, and that’s the date that stuck. So, nestled between the fireworks and flags is this story — a reminder that this day is not just about history. It’s about us — all of us — and the ever-evolving ideas of freedom, equality, and what it means to be part of America’s continuing story. 💥 Happy Fourth of July, everyone! And don’t forget — celebrate safely, reflect deeply… and as always, remember to buy and shop local. 🔗 Find us online: 🌐 discovermontcalmpodcast.com📱 Facebook | Instagram | YouTube — @DiscoverMontcalmPodcast Listen to the episode: Discover Montcalm Podcast Check out this video!
