    Finish Line Whiplash and Divorce

Send us Fan MailYou’re finally at the end of your divorce, you sign the agreement, and for a moment you can breathe again. Then the doubt rushes in and it feels like your brain is replaying every conversation, every number, every “what if I went to trial” scenario. We call that finish line whiplash, and it’s one of the most common patterns I see after years of divorce financial analysis and divorce settlement support. The hard truth is that urgency to be done and panic after it’s done are both terrible places to evaluate major money decisions. Click here to book a complimentary consultation with Jacki by clicking here https://calendly.com/roessler-jacki/30min?month=2024-03Click here to download your Post Divorce Gameplan worksheet https://www.roesslerdivorce.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/post-divorce-gameplan-fillable.pdfCenter for Financial PlanningStriving to Improve Lives Through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/DAWNDivorce Attorneys for Women: Michigan's Original Divorce Attorneys for MichiganDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Divorce in the Digital Age: What Your Digital Footprint Reveals with Max Emmer, Family Law Attorney

Send us Fan MailYour divorce isn’t just happening in courtrooms and conference rooms anymore. It’s happening in your texts, your emails, your payment apps, and the posts you forget you made. We’re joined by Michigan family law attorney, mediator, and collaborative attorney Max Emmer to unpack what a “digital footprint” really means in modern divorce and how one careless message can become expensive leverage. We talk through what’s truly discoverable in divorce discovery versus what’s actually relevant, and why that difference matters when emotions are high. Max shares practical guidance on co parenting communication, including how hostile text chains can show a court that neither parent can effectively cooperate. We also dig into the money trail: Venmo and Zelle transfers, credit card statements, and the “optics” that can make small charges feel explosive when they show up as pages of transactions. To reach out to Max to schedule a consult, click here https://www.emmerlawplc.com/To schedule a consultation to see if Jacki is a good fit for your case, click here https://calendly.com/roessler-jacki/30min?month=2025-01If this helped, subscribe, share the episode with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find clear divorce financial and legal guidance.Center for Financial PlanningStriving to Improve Lives Through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/DAWNDivorce Attorneys for Women: Michigan's Original Divorce Attorneys for MichiganDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. The Big Issue with QDROs (It's Not What You Think It Is!)

Send us Fan MailA pension can look “handled” in your divorce judgment and the former  spouse can still get reduced (or zero) benefits. That is the gut punch behind today’s deep dive on QDROs, the qualified domestic relations orders that actually control pension division in divorce. We walk through what a QDRO does, why plan administrators only follow the approved order, and how a delay can undo an otherwise solid settlement. That “most important” factor is timing. We explain how QDROs often get treated like leftover paperwork after the judgment, how plans can require multiple revisions, and why no one is automatically tracking the process unless you step in. Then we shift to the mailbag: a listener asks what to do when an ex agrees to pay credit card debt but the creditors still come after her, and we talk through enforcement and protecting your credit. Subscribe to Divorce Rich, share this with someone navigating divorce financial planning, and leave a review if it helped you take one concrete step toward protecting your financial future.Center for Financial PlanningStriving to Improve Lives Through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/DAWNDivorce Attorneys for Women: Michigan's Original Divorce Attorneys for MichiganDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. The "Hot Stock Problem": When One Investment Dominates your Divorce

Send us Fan MailOne stock can quietly take over your entire financial life and divorce forces you to make a decision before you feel ready. When a concentrated stock position grows out of employer equity, a hot tip, or a long run of gains, it can look like the easiest asset on the spreadsheet. We see the opposite: it can be the riskiest, most emotional, and most misunderstood part of the divorce settlement. We walk through why concentration risk matters more during divorce than almost any other life moment. Diversification is not just an investing buzzword here, it is protection against extreme volatility exposure and bad timing. We also dig into the practical fight that shows up at the table: one spouse wants to hold for future growth while the other wants stability now, and neither view is “wrong” until you run the numbers against real life cash flow needs. Then we get specific about the money details that change outcomes, especially cost basis and capital gains taxes. A large stock position with a low cost basis can carry a big tax bill under the surface, so a million dollar asset may not be a million dollars after tax. From there, we lay out three settlement paths: sell and split the cash, divide shares in kind, or let one spouse keep the stock while the other takes offsetting assets, as long as risk and taxes are properly considered.Center for Financial PlanningStriving to Improve Lives Through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/DAWNDivorce Attorneys for Women: Michigan's Original Divorce Attorneys for MichiganDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Stop Letting Chatbots Negotiate Your Divorce

Send us Fan MailAI is already sitting at the negotiation table in divorce, whether we want it there or not and that’s exactly why we wanted this conversation. I’m joined by Jamie Lima, a financial planner, certified divorce financial analyst, and software developer who’s building Secure Split to modernize how divorce professionals and clients handle the money side of a case.We get honest about the downside first: AI hallucinations and misinformation. When someone is overwhelmed and searching for certainty, a confident-sounding answer from a chatbot can feel like truth, even when it ignores state rules, county-to-county differences, and the reality that most divorces settle through negotiation. Jamie shares why prompting matters, why citations and controlled sources matter, and why AI is not the same thing as a search engine. Then we dig into what AI can do well in divorce financial planning: streamline data gathering, reduce manual entry mistakes, and help professionals build clearer scenarios faster. Jamie walks me through Secure Split’s approach to case management, secure client data collection, and an embedded AI assistant called Casey that can explain what you’re seeing on screen, guide workflows, and help generate scenarios based on the facts in the file. We also talk about the consumer version and why educational tools still need guardrails that steer people back to qualified legal and financial advice. Finally, our mailbag tackles a question I hear all the time: should you take a pension buyout or keep lifetime income? I explain how pension valuation works, why assumptions drive the number, and how side-by-side projections help you compare outcomes without letting emotion run the decision.Subscribe for more practical divorce money guidance, share this with someone who needs clarity, and leave a review so more people can find the show.To learn more about Secure Split, click https://essentials.securesplit.com/To schedule an introductory call with Jacki, click https://calendly.com/roessler-jacki/30min?month=2024-03Center for Financial PlanningStriving to Improve Lives Through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/DAWNDivorce Attorneys for Women: Michigan's Original Divorce Attorneys for MichiganDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Post-Divorce Investing Strategy for 2026 with Angela Palacios, CFP®, AIF®

Send us Fan MailMarkets keep shouting; our plan gets quieter. We bring on Angela Palacios, Partner and Chief Investment Officer at the Center for Financial Planning, to translate noisy headlines into steady, real-world steps for anyone rebuilding finances after a divorce. From interest rates and mortgages to taxes and risk, we focus on choices that protect your present and grow your future. We start by grounding the investment outlook in fundamentals. After a volatile stretch, both stocks and bonds showed surprising resilience, reminding us that corporate earnings, consumer strength, and employment drive long-term returns more than breaking news. We unpack how potential rate cuts may filter into mortgage costs and why timing a home decision is less important than building a runway of six to twenty-four months of cash. That buffer buys peace of mind and avoids panic selling.Next, we get practical with portfolio building blocks. Bonds offer scheduled income and lower volatility for mid-term needs, while stocks fuel long-term growth and protect purchasing power. We explain how to match money to time—now, soon, and later—so market dips don’t derail essential spending. We tackle common post-divorce questions: Should you liquidate investments to pay off the mortgage? What’s the tax impact of rebalancing after a strong year? How do you reset risk tolerance when your income and responsibilities change? If you’re ready to feel in control of your money, follow the show, share this episode with a friend who needs it, and leave a quick review telling us your top financial question post-divorce. Your feedback shapes future conversations and helps more people find the guidance they need.RSVP by February 18 2026: To hear Angela speak on February 25, 2026 about the 2026 Economic and  Investment Outlook in person at the Great Lakes Culinary Institute in Southfield, CLICK HERE to register https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/xt2germ/lp/bd4e0ed9-1f5c-4a7a-9d2c-0830d4f7d69aCenter for Financial PlanningStriving to Improve Lives Through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/DAWNDivorce Attorneys for Women: Michigan's Original Divorce Attorneys for MichiganDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. “I Just Want to Be Done"—and Why That’s the Most Dangerous Mindset in Divorce

Send us Fan MailEver felt the surge of “I just want to be done” and almost signed away your future for a little quiet? We’ve been there with countless clients, and today we walk through how to turn that burnout into smarter, calmer decisions that protect your long-term peace. We talk strategy, not slogans: how to slow down without stalling, how to see numbers instead of noise, and how to finish wisely so you’re not paying for quick relief with decades of regret. We also unpack the house dilemma—the powerful urge to keep it at any cost. We break down the real math: maintenance, taxes, insurance, repairs, and the emotional premium we pay for “stability.” You’ll learn to compare scenarios like keeping the home, downsizing later, or setting a cash reserve, and how those choices change net worth and breathing room over time. If you’re ready to trade panic for a plan—quantify tradeoffs, set pre-commitment rules, and keep your energy for the parts that truly matter—this conversation is for you. Divorce and the Mortgage: Can One Spouse Keep the Low Rate? With Brian Mutter, CDLP

Send us Fan MailThink you can simply “assume” the mortgage and keep that sweet 3% rate? We pull back the curtain on what actually happens when one spouse tries to take over the home loan after divorce—and why lenders often say “maybe” on the phone but “no” in underwriting. With guest Brian Mutter, a Certified Divorce Lending Professional, we unpack how assumptions work, when they collapse under lender-specific rules, and what to do when you still need to pull equity to buy out your spouse.Throughout, we show why involving a CDLP before your judgment is final protects you from unfinanceable settlements. Align legal decisions with lending rules, document the right income at the right time, and avoid assumptions that unravel after the ink dries. Plus, in our mailbag, we explain how to access an ex-spouse’s 401(k) using a QDRO, timelines to expect, and why a specialist is worth the fee.If this helped clarify your housing plan, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs it, and leave a review with your biggest mortgage question—we might feature it next.To contact Brian at Go Forward Mortgage, email at [email protected] or call 248-956-0445To schedule an intro call with Jacki to see if she's a good fit for your divorce, click this link https://calendly.com/roessler-jacki/30minCenter for Financial PlanningStriving to Improve Lives Through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/DAWNDivorce Attorneys for Women: Michigan's Original Divorce Attorneys for MichiganDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Money Panic After Divorce? Let’s Unpanic with Coach Angela Cipriano

Send us Fan MailThe moment the decree is signed, real life begins. We walk through the first months of financial independence after a divorce and show how small, steady actions create relief fast. Our guest, Angela Cipriano, a financial coach who rebuilt her own life post-divorce, explains how to move from overwhelm to ownership with checklists, simple systems, and a mindset that actually sticks. We start by demystifying the roles: a financial coach handles what most advisors skip—beneficiary updates, utility transfers, passwords, bill flow, and day-to-day budgeting—so you can arrive at your planner’s office organized and confident. We also tackle the emotional side of money. If you’ve heard “you’re bad with money,” we show how to replace that script with data and small wins. Then we get tactical: why your emergency fund belongs in a high-yield savings account, how to sanity-check a 401(k) allocation, and where to look for signs of hidden accounts using pay stubs, bank statements, and tax schedules. In our mailbag, we answer two big questions: who pays old medical bills after the divorce, and can a “vibes-only” budget work? Spoiler: numbers give you choices, and your decree often decides the bills.Reach out to Angela by clicking this link https://www.aiocoachingmi.com/To review and download Jacki's post-divorce game plan form, click below: https://www.roesslerdivorce.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/post-divorce-gameplan-fillable.pdfListen to the Divorce Rich podcast episode, "Ready, Set, Go"..creating your post-divorce Game Plan https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ready-set-go-post-divorce-gameplan-divorce-rich-snacks/id1735150222?i=1000691831731Visit us at https://www.roesslerdivorce.com/ to learn more about Jacki's practice and to find valuable resources for your case. The Divorce Rich podcast is proudly sponsored by Center for Financial Planning: Striving to Improve Lives through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/

The Shocking Cost of Health Coverage After Divorce

Send us Fan MailThe moment a divorce becomes real, health insurance can feel like quicksand. Premiums spike, deadlines loom, and the plans you relied on may no longer cover the treatments that keep you well. We walk through a real client’s story to show how to evaluate COBRA, employer coverage, and ACA marketplace plans without guesswork or panic. The twist: even with a higher monthly premium, COBRA can sometimes save you money and protect continuity of care when you factor in deductibles, prescriptions, integrative therapies, and network access.Health insurance choices are also legal strategy. We explain how to document costs and negotiate COBRA into temporary orders, spousal support, or property settlements, especially when one spouse keeps valuable workplace subsidies. To cap it off, our mailbag tackles QDROs—what they are, why your divorce judgment isn’t enough to divide retirement plans, and why using a specialist protects your share. If you’re navigating divorce and want clarity, control, and peace of mind, this conversation gives you a step-by-step plan to protect your health and your wallet. Collaborative Instead of Combative Divorce with Attorney Randy Pitler

Send us Fan MailDivorce doesn’t have to be a courtroom sport. We sit down with Michigan family law attorney Randy Pittler to unpack how collaborative divorce reframes the process from “win-lose” to problem solving—replacing subpoenas and shuttle diplomacy with a trained team, full transparency, and solutions built for real life. Randy explains why litigation so often breeds delay, expense, and post‑mediation regret, and how Collaborative Divorce flips the incentives: each spouse has a collaboratively trained attorney, a neutral financial expert gathers documents and models options, and a mental health coach keeps emotions from steering the deal.Curious whether you’re a fit? If there’s basic good faith, no active hiding of assets, and a desire to avoid scorched earth, Collaborative Divorce can work—even when emotions run high. We share how to find trained professionals in Michigan and beyond, why ongoing training matters, and how this approach sets healthier patterns for future co‑parenting. We pull back the curtain on the true financial toll of an unhappy marriage, from hidden debts you never signed off on to the slow bleed of funding a lifestyle that later becomes the benchmark for spousal support. Through real client stories, we trace how shared liabilities, unapproved loans, and retirement withdrawals can quietly rewrite your balance sheet while you’re trying to keep the peace. We talk through practical safeguards—prenups or postnups, shared logins, regular financial check-ins—and offer a structured worksheet to calculate your monthly cost of staying versus leaving. The aim isn’t to push you out the door; it’s to arm you with numbers so your next step—whether to work on the marriage or plan an exit—rests on clarity, not guesswork.Ready to see your situation in black and white? Send us Fan MailEver had a doctor prescribe surgery but wondered who would guide you through the daily rehabilitation afterward? That's exactly the situation many people face in divorce when they rely solely on their attorney without bringing in a financial expert. The most successful divorces involve a collaborative team: your attorney handling legal strategy, a financial expert analyzing long-term sustainability, and you—the informed client—making decisions based on both legal rights and financial realities. This approach not only leads to better outcomes but often saves money by having the right professional handle the right tasks.Listen as I break down the three most common financial mistakes in divorce, share real client stories of settlements gone wrong, and explain the red flags that signal you need financial expertise on your team. You'll learn why the house you're fighting for might become a financial prison, how retirement accounts aren't created equal, and why spousal support calculations require more than just legal formulas.Don't let your divorce victory turn into a financial defeat. Could the Court Decide You Should Have a Bigger Paycheck? with Vocational Expert Karen Grossberg

Send us Fan MailEver wondered who determines what you "could" be earning during a divorce? Meet the vocational expert—a professional whose assessment of your earning potential might significantly impact your financial settlement.Vocational experts analyze education, work experience, and job market opportunities to establish reasonable income expectations for divorcing spouses. They're often hired when one spouse has been out of the workforce, works part-time, or appears underemployed relative to their qualifications. While their evaluations frequently benefit the higher-earning spouse, understanding their methodology empowers you to navigate this aspect of divorce more effectively. Our guest brings refreshing candor to this often-contentious topic, explaining how she prioritizes fairness and realism over inflated projections. "It's important to me to be reasonable," she emphasizes. "I don't want them to negotiate a settlement based on something that will never be." Her approach includes comprehensive research using Department of Labor statistics, geographic wage data, and sometimes direct employer inquiries to establish accurate wage ranges rather than arbitrary figures.Visit us at https://www.roesslerdivorce.com/ to learn more about Jacki's practice and to find valuable resources for your case. The Divorce Rich podcast is proudly sponsored by Center for Financial Planning: Striving to Improve Lives through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/

Send us Fan MailWe're starting off Season 2 with a bang! Divorce is the single largest financial transaction of most people's lives, and making uninformed decisions based on common money myths can have devastating long-term consequences. We debunk five major misconceptions about divorce finances to help you navigate this complex process with confidence and clarity.• DIY divorce is rarely the money-saving solution it appears to be and can cost significantly more in the long run• Keeping the house requires careful financial analysis including mortgage qualification, affordability, and evaluating its long-term impact on your finances• Retirement accounts can be accessed during divorce through QDROs, offering important financial flexibility without the usual early withdrawal penalties• Alimony needs should be evaluated as part of your complete financial picture, including all potential income sources and a realistic budget• Divorce settlements must consider future implications like taxes, investment growth, and retirement security, not just division of current assets• Having proper legal and financial guidance helps you make sound decisions when you're feeling emotionally exhausted near the end of negotiationsSchedule a free 30-minute consultation with me to see if divorce financial planning is the right fit for you, because financial peace of mind is possible. https://calendly.com/roessler-jacki/30minCLICK the LINK below to download Jacki's budget worksheet and find other resources!https://www.roesslerdivorce.com/resources/Visit us at https://www.roesslerdivorce.com/ to learn more about Jacki's practice and to find valuable resources for your case. The Divorce Rich podcast is proudly sponsored by Center for Financial Planning: Striving to Improve Lives through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/

Divorce Like a Boss: Real Talk and Strategy for High Earners with Financial Advisor, Nick Defenthaler, CFP, RIPC

Send us Fan MailTax strategies that high-wage earners need during divorce but rarely receive proper guidance on - that's the focus of this deep-diving conversation between host Jacki Roessler, CDFA and returning guest Nick Defenthaler, CFP and partner at the Center for Financial Planning. For executives receiving equity compensation, the conversation turns to concentration risk - the danger of having too much net worth tied to a single company's performance. "Our general rule of thumb is no more than 10-20% within one particular company stock," explains Nick, while acknowledging the emotional attachment many feel to their company shares. The solution? A strategic "capital gains budget" approach that systematically diversifies assets while managing tax implications.Throughout the episode, both experts emphasize that while technical knowledge matters, successful financial planning during divorce requires balancing mathematical precision with empathy for the client's emotional reality. As Nick puts it: "You can look at the math and it could tell us one thing, but there's this other component called the human element."Ready for some advanced tax planning tailored to your post-divorce life? Mediation, Divorce (and Marriage) with Attorney, Xavier Prather

Send us Fan MailWhen most people think of divorce, they picture contentious courtroom battles and emotional warfare. But what if there's a better way? Family law attorney and certified domestic relations mediator Xavier Prather reveals how mediation offers couples a path to resolution that  saves money, and creates better outcomes for everyone involved.Xavier brings an unexpected background to his mediation practice. As the historic winner of Big Brother Season 23—the first Black winner in the show's two-decade history—he developed remarkable skills for helping people in conflict communicate effectively. "In the Big Brother house, just like in divorce, you're dealing with a lot of different personalities and emotions in an environment designed to bring out some of the most toxic feelings," Xavier explains. "That experience taught me how to help people express themselves while still finding common ground."The conversation explores the critical differences between facilitative and evaluative mediation approaches. While evaluative mediation focuses on assessment based on courtroom experience, facilitative mediation centers on improving communication between parties. Xavier passionately advocates for approaches that give couples more control over their outcomes rather than surrendering decisions to the court system.Perhaps most fascinating is Xavier's discussion of marriage mediation—a proactive approach for couples who want to stay together but struggle with communication issues that could eventually lead to divorce. Unlike couples therapy, which delves into psychological patterns, marriage mediation focuses on practical communication strategies and agreements about responsibilities, finances, and parenting. "The couples that go to mediation—I applaud them because they're recognizing they need help before it's too late," Xavier notes.Center for Financial PlanningStriving to Improve Lives Through Financial Planning Done Right! https://www.centerfinplan.com/Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. The Marital Home in Divorce: Experts Weigh In: Sell, Split, Buy-Out?

Send us Fan MailThe marital home represents far more than bricks and mortar during divorce—it embodies memories, stability, and often the largest financial asset couples must address. This insightful roundtable discussion brings together key experts who should be involved in these critical decisions: family law attorney Max Emmer, mortgage specialist Leeanne McKeon (a Certified Divorce Lending Professional), real estate expert Jodi Douglas, and host Jacki Roessler (a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst). Most eye-opening are the experts' warnings about poorly crafted divorce decree language,  unrealistic refinancing deadlines, improper quitclaim deed timing, and failure to verify accurate home values which can create catastrophic financial consequences that last years beyond the divorce itself.
