DJ Sol Mixography

DJ Sol comes from a background spanning 3 generations of musician's, so the music is definitely in his blood. Growing up in Los Angeles in the late 70s and early 80s, Sol found inspiration in the newly-emerging hip-hop sound of that era (e.g. Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa) - a style that became the impetus for a DJ career that now spans three decades. He first started DJing small parties in the late 80s but eventually relocated to San Francisco in the early 90’s to get involved the emerging underground house and breakbeat music scene. At this point he began aggressively pushing his DJ'ing career and by 1998 he was playing at many of the biggest clubs and underground parties in San Francisco.The style of music he spins is an eclectic combination of House, Breaks, Hip-Hop, Mash-up's & NuFunk. He's shared billings with notable DJ’s such as Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, Andy Caldwell, Jeno, Derrick Carter, Stanton Warriors and Plump DJs to name a few. He recently just f

Sol Mustaches & Margaritas 2013
This week we have a set from DJ Sol, recorded live at Mustaches & Margaritas -- our pre-playa fundraiser at Mars Bar on a gorgeous summer day. Sol says: "I love walking into a party that's going off with only 10 minutes to spare before you start your set. When I arrived everyone had a mustache on and the margaritas were flowing. As I made my way to the back there were lots of sweaty bodies dancing and Shissla was tearing it up, as usual, right before I jumped on the decks. For this set I had burned 2 CDs of brand new tracks I'd been wanting to play, but about halfway into my mix I realized I must of burned the same shit on both CDs!! Luckily I brought a couple more CDs and eventually the place was rockin! Although it's not the mix I was planning on, it turned out way better than I expected. I ended the set with 2 killer remixes, PuRe SX & Mutantbreakz remix of Reckoning Song (One Day) by Asaf Avidan & The Mojos, which has the classic line "One day baby, we'll be old, oh baby, we'll be old, and think of all the stories that we could have told. Then into Mr Mezdup's remix of the reggae classic Israelites by Desmond Decker And The Aces."
