82. Parenting Can Feel 'Good': 'Good Inside' Book Review
Are you tired of fighting with your children over bad behavior? Do the tactics you’ve been trying fall short? You are not alone. You are NOT a bad dad. This week, It’s another Book Club episode - where we turn evidence-based research into practical, values-focused parenting tips. This week’s episode covers Dr. Becky Kennedy’s Book, Good Inside. You don't have to feel frustrated. You don't have to feel like a bad parent. This podcast will include my biggest lessons from this book and how I am applying these to my own life as a parent as well as with the families that I serve:1. Internal goodness and behavior as an expression of needs, not identity2. Importance of empathy and connection in building resilience3. Shift from correcting behavior to helping children develop long-term emotional regulation skills4. Parental self-reflection and emotional maturity as key to child developmentOne action item for dads is to practice interpreting their child's behavior as a form of communication and to respond with empathy and understanding, rather than judgment. By nurturing their child's internal goodness and emotional regulation skills, dads can help their children develop into compassionate and resilient individuals. 81. Ask the Experts: ADHD ft. The ADHD Dude
This week we are tackling a controversial and complex condition - ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder with The ADHD Dude, Ryan Wexelblatt.Find Ryan on his Social media - Instagram, Youtube, and LinkedinFind his full content and membership info at www.adhddude.comADHD is a difficult diagnosis for families living with someone experiencing it because of the many misconceptions, false beliefs, and poor education that exists around this topic - for medical professionals and patients alike. So our guest this week is going to help us truly understand ADHD. He shares information that makes it more clear than most other resources you can find on ADHD!We start by discussing how ADHD is a poor name for this condition, because while Attention challenges and hyperactivity can be clues to ADHD, they don't describe the underlying cause or provide a framework for treatment. So we start with a definition of ADHD to frame our discussion and cut to the heart of the underlying problems in a way that empowers parents and kids living with ADHD.We then discuss:Other conditions that mimic ADHD: poor sleep, screen time, learning disabilities, and exposure to trauma. We help listeners understand how these pieces fit together? What type of therapy is needed for ADHD? What changes can parents make at home to help support their child with ADHD?How can parents advocate for their kid's needs at school as it relates to ADHD?Then we talk about medication? There is a lot of stress with parents about starting medication for ADHD. It's also the aspect of treatment that everyone's uncle has an uninformed opinion about - making it even more difficult for families to make the right choice for their child. 80. Becoming a 24/7 Dad ft. Christopher Brown
Happy Father's Day to all Dads everywhere. This week on the Docs2Dads podcast, we are celebrating Father's Day with Christopher Brown, the President of the National Fatherhood Initiative. NFI works with community partners to address the issue of fatherlessness plaguing communities across the country. This includes programs to support fathers' involvement in the family and ensure that fathers are included in the parenting support programs. We start our conversation by discussing NFI's mission on their website - "Creating a world in which every child has a 24/7 Dad" and what that means to Mr. Brown both as a dad and as the President of NFI. We talk about the way fatherhood has evolved in the minds of the Millenial and Gen Z generations. How and why dads are getting more involved in the family life happening in their homes and supporting their wives' careers outside the home. Then we shift gears to talk about the ways that NFI is working with community programs across the country to address fatherlessness. Here are some resources that we reference in the episode:For more information about the National Fatherhood Initiative or to find a program in your community, head over to www.fatherhood.orgTo reference the strategy slide Mr. Brown discusses at the end of the episode, find that image here about halfway down the page or at Docs2Dads.com/episode80Have a question about this or other topics? 75. A Cord of Three Strands ft. Anthony Vandagriff
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecc 4:12The importance of community is in every book of wisdom from the Bible and most major world religions!! This week, I’m joined by Anthony Vandagriff, from The Fathering Our Future podcast to discuss the importance of community for dads!! As Dads we sometimes fall into the trap that we need to “man up” and do everything ourselves. This approach is not just unwise, it’s outright foolishness!!Whatever struggle you may be having with your wife, children, or business, someone in your community probably has some experience and wisdom to provide. No man is an island and this week, we challenge you to start building your community of dads to become the best husband and father you can be. Check out Fathering Our Future for more great content for dads including my appearance on his podcast. Have a question about this or other topics? 74. Take a Hike and Take Your Kids with You
As Spring weather starts to appear here in Michigan, that means I get to return to my favorite activity to do with my kids in the springtime: taking a walk. When the weather is nice, I take a walk outside with my kids almost every day!!This good for me because it:Forces me to Unplug from my cell phone and other technologyHelps me meet my step/activity goal each dayIt's good for my kids because it:Normalizes spending time outside in fresh airAllows them to get 'the wiggles' out before bedHelps with their natural circadian rhythm, especially if our walk is around the time the sun is going down. And it's good for our relationship because:It's time that my kids know they have my undivided attentionThey can ask me about anything and we talk about their dayWe can practice with subjects they are learning - right now it's shapes, colors, letters, and words - but someday these conversations will get much deeper. So I challenge you to get outside with your kids TODAY. Whether it's walk, pushing a stroller, riding bikes, or whatever you like to do outside.
