Lest you think that we forgot about where the newly matriculating students have come from, Patti Lux-Weber from the UW-Madison Parent Program joined us to chat about how the parents and guardians get involved and stay in touch with their students. Plus, up-to-the-minute tech news and opinion and another harrowing tale of registering for classes using paper and face-to-face contact!

We were joined by Wren Singer from the Center for the First Year Experience, who put on the amazing SOAR program, helping new students before every semester. She delved into the history of the SOAR program, and the even more checkered past of course registration. And we put our own Sandee Seiberlich in the hot seat to tell us about the many resources DoIT offers to incoming students and their parents. And as always, we have the latest tech news and opinions, keeping you informed and ahead of everybody else!

Bill Jensen, Paul Nazario, and Dan Parenteau were kind enough to come in and try to explain to the Geeks how all those networks link up into this magical Internet concept, and actually get people connected to each other online. Since they actually install and maintain the physical networking links for DoIT and the surrounding Madison area, they told us about fiber optics, undersea cables, and even laser beams that get the 1s and 0s where they need to go.

Two more firsts for DoIT Live this week! We had our first live remote broadcast and our first returning guest, Ross Yahnke. He told us about an upcoming event all about publishing your written words via the iPad, and we also had Steve from UBS’s Text department on to chat about how all the latest book replacements have and have not replaced the printed page. And ... find out which DoIT Geek is a hardcore e-reader (you might be surprised)! A big thank you goes out to our hosts at the Book Store at HSLC for providing us the space and the good cheer during our broadcast.

In our quest to find the busiest people on the UW-Madison campus, we were graced by the presence of Gregg Vanderheiden, founder of the Trace Project, and professor of many things accessibility and technology related. He told us about the GPII initiative and about how we could all have technology adapt to us. Plus we had Alice Anderson from DoIT, and Shawn Henry from the W3C on to chat about the great resources available to people with disabilities. And all the latest news about Sony, Apple, Anonymous, and the importance of securing your information in the digital age!

How much technology do you need to make a modern-day center for students? More than you’d think! We’ll explore the newly opened Union South and all of the cool ways for students, faculty, staff and others in the University of Wisconsin community to meet and interact. We met up with DoIT's John Staley to talk about the really swanky Info Lounge in Union South, plus we go on an overland journey to the 2011 Engineering Expo and find lots of neat tech on display there too.

John, Mike, Chris, and Dave from the Cool It project were kind enough to talk about their game that simulates cooling things down to new absolute zero. All in all, it seems that John's students really enjoy learning about mechanical engineering, so who can argue with that? Plus Ty found us a gaming historian and used Google Voice to call him up! Chris Hopp and Judy Caruso from the DoIT and UW-Madison Campus Green teams joined us today, to talk about the various ways you can put your old and busted computers and gadgets to good use, and ways to save on your electric bill. Plus we had another important DoIT person on, Joanne Berg, our CIO and Vice Provost for Campus IT. She seems overly excited about being ready in case bad things happen, but that's what she's supposed to be doing, apparently!

We were intending to talk about the lighting, sound, and video technology that works behind-the-scenes for performing arts, but we mainly stuck to the first because we had a studio full of lighting people. Tom Steer from Electronic Theatre Controls soothed us with tales about installing dimmers in far-flung regions of the world, and Jon Miner, Sasha Aranow, and Bob Plankers from DoIT told us all about their hijinks with lighting instruments and controls. It may sound a bit overly-theatrical, but if you listen carefully, you can find ways to reduce your electric bill and extend the life of your incandescent lamps! Just in time for our program on green technology coming up next week.

We were joined by Josh Harder from DoIT’s awesome Digital Media Center to talk about how people are consuming media these days. Plus we had Peter Mann and Jeff Bohrer in to chat about how more and more students are attending their classes virtually. Plus, we revisit Netscape, T.M.N.T., and other odd nerdy nostalgia!

Phyllis, Nick, and Allen were nice enough to come in and chat about all of the awesome (and sometimes frightening) aspects of Social Media. And guest geek Theresa Saldaña again graced us with her presence since Jesse and Adam were MIA. One more excused absence was recorded today, for Mr. La Grew. But, again, we labored on and still had a great time with Leah and Rachel from the DoIT Help Desk. They told us all about the ins and outs of computer support, and we had a preview of the new Human Resources System (HRS) that’s on the horizon. Plus we played “Awesome or Lame” (RAID arrays are indeed “awesome!”) and “Stump the Geek” with our new friend from the land of free money, Trent!

We had a few excused absences today, Ty and Mattrock were out with the plague, and Sandee was skiing in Tahoe. But we soldiered on and drafted Theresa Saldana and Dale Carder to help us with our little broadcast enterprise, and Paul Broadhead stopped by to chat about the soon-to-be open new Union South. We were joined by Kelly Johannsen, director of Software Training for Students (STS) and Braden Bruington and Don Fleischman, instructors for the Student Technical Training (STT) courses to talk about all of the training offerings available to UW-Madison students. Plus we had up to the minute news on Apple and Microsoft, and played a unix-ey version of "Stump the Geek!"

Monica Bush and Stefan Wahe from DoIT Security helped gave us some tips on how to secure not only your computer but also your smartphone. Plus, Ty explained Google Voice to his Grandma, Lorraine, who copies and pastes like a champ on the Facebook and our listener Matt came in to the fabulous WSUM studios to play "Stump the Geek."

We were joined by Theresa Saldana from DoIT's Repair and Desktop Support (RaDS) group, and she tells us all about the bad things people have done to their computers and how her group can help. Plus Rick Keir, consultant at the DoIT Tech Store, gives us a primer on backing up your computer's data before bad things happen.

Steve Devoti was our guest today, talking about the UW cloud, and the other clouds too! And apparently MySpace is for sale, who knew? Plus, George Dreckman from the City of Madison Streets department and the geeks talk snowplows and GPS.
