Polaroid Notes - Snippets of Two Trees Remaining (Edition DWI)
Edition DWI is a new series of recordings from the netlabel Drone Works International. The releases focus on specific themes related to nature and its secrets, its constant change, destruction and renewal. Each album is an acoustic statement that invites the listener to listen attentively and with quiet introspection. The first release on Edition DWI is by Polaroid Notes. The album ‘Two / Trees / Remaining’ deals with the transformation and changes of our forests, whether through human intervention or natural forces. It has been scientifically proven that forests suffer particularly from global warming. A sad example of the destructive power of extreme weather events happened in October 2018 in South Tyrol/Trentino, Italy, with a storm called Vaia, which devastated and deforested entire mountain slopes within a short period of time, changing the landscape drastically. ‘Two / Trees / Remaining’ is an elegy to this dramatic event, which left deep scars on the mountain landscape and in the hearts of its inhabitants. But it also testifies to the vitality of nature and the people who live there, creating something new out of destruction and pain. The ten tracks of this album reflect this contradiction in minimalist, subtly accented piano compositions with contrasting sublime ambient soundscapes. The artist himself witnessed the changes in this wonderful mountain region over many years through repeated visits before and after the storm disaster. Tracklist: 01. Two / Trees / Remaining / 02. The Breathing Of The Forest / 03. Slow Mountain Views / 04. Vaia / 05. Every Storm Runs Out Of Rain / 06. Riturne / 07. Hope Is In Our Hands / 08. New Landscapes / 09. Variations (Replanting) / 10. Blanket Swimming - Snippets Of Balance (DWI 51)
"Balance" is a new five-part album by US artist Blanket Swimming, with a focus on minimalism by exploring the limitations of a single instrument. Each track was recorded live in a single take, with the only sound source being the Critter & Guitari Organelle and effects pedals. "While this is perhaps one of my most minimalistic albums to date, each piece offers rich and calming textures that when leaned into, reveal tranquil worlds of infinite exploration and solace. As referenced in track 4, the album as a whole takes inspiration from the idea of there being five elements - air, fire, water, earth, and spirit. When all five are in balance, a sense of wholeness and oneness emerges. It is this feeling that I tried to tap into with these pieces." (Blanket Swimming) Tracklist: 1. It Is The Wind / 2. Ordovician / 3. Antarctic Ice Shelves / 4. The Five Elements / 5. Global Ocean Bio: Nicholas Maloney is a sound artist based in Nashville, TN. They create concrète compositions from field recordings under their given name, fluid ambient music as Blanket Swimming, and are 1/2 of the experimental music duo, Picture Rather Muted. Maloney works with field recording, guitar, synthesizers, and a variety of processed instruments/sound sources to create an abstract world of immense depth and range. Maloney's work expresses stillness and activity, lightness and dark, in order to provide a rich imaginative space for listeners to explore. They also curate the label Asonu and operate their self-publishing banner, Open Colour Imprint. Deep Dive Sound - Snippets Of On The Drone Of Solitude (DWI 48)
"On The Drone Of Solitude" is a collection of sonic narratives whispered through the gentle hiss of vintage tape, evoking solitary moments experienced during travels. From the labyrinthine backstreets of ancient Tunis to the haunting, long-forgotten sanatoriums of post-Soviet Georgia, from the tranquil serenity of a Singaporean airport to the bustling, chaotic streets of Ho Chi Minh, and to the serene heights of Azorean mountain lakes, from the grandeur of Kosovo's towering peaks to the delicate caress of my hand drum's mellowness, this album weaves a tapestry of sonic solace and soulful connection. These sonic vignettes emphasize the transformation of landscapes into cherished memories, in places where people chose solitude or were compelled to embrace it. They serve as sonic meditations on solitude, portraying a single person confronting the grandeur of nature or the lonely moments experienced in bustling but careless urban environments. As the title "Dreaming Drone" suggests, it's a multilayered soundscape that is inspired by the intention to create an ambient drone piece that would reflect a dream world. Vinny Vortex - Snippets Of Subtle Movements (DWI 41)
With "Subtle Movements" British artist Vinny Vortex makes his first full length album appearence on DWI. Some of you may remember Vinny from his contributions to our "Drone Works" compilations. With "Subtle Movements" he presents a great set of meditative ambient drone soundscapes. The concept behind the project was to try and strip things down to the bear minimum, and to create soundscapes for sound therapy. In particular case for his daughter who struggles to sleep and quite often listens to his ambient compositions. The album is dedicated to her. "Subtle Movements" was created on a very small modular system. This gave him real focus to maximise the potential of the system. Vinny is a firm believer of the 'less is more' concept. Track list: 1. Layers Of Mist 2. Slow Rotation 3. High Altitude 4. Higher Plane 5. Beyond The Surface 6. Demetrio Cecchitelli - Snippets Of Drone Works (DWI 33)
Demetrio Cecchitelli (b. 1997, located in Rimini/Italy) is a musician, multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer and research artist. In his sound performances gestures and textures melt composing layers and timbrical juxtaposition. He uses lots of techniques from the concrete music's experience and both electroacoustic, where the usage of different sound sources, mixed to live electronics and instrumental parts argue the compositional and performative act. "Drone Works" is his first album release for DWI, preceeding his contribution to our "Drone Works Vol. 4" compilation (Dec. 2020). About the album: "Coming from a huge period of restlessness, this work wants to share a research in the field of drone-music, that I carry forward since the very beginning of my musical activity. I remind that I was a young 16-year-old guy, wondering to record and compose my own material to develop a personal language. Firstly was not the idea of making ambient the impact and primordial impulse that inspired my creative days, but a will to discover, with scientific or empiric methods, the variety of sounds that electronic and electroacoustic music have. I recorded "Drone Works" in a room of an apartment inside a residence in Rimini, it was the first lockdown. All the sound sources I used came from stretched guitars, reverberations and Michael Norris plugins, that are really interesting for having particular characteristics in sound modelling and the correlated transformations. At that time, that's quite one year ago, the recordings were not meant as a possible release on a record label, but instead as a mere catharsis, and an archive of sounds for a sound installation or a live performance. What I wanted to express was a condition of permanency in a specific state, reminiscences of past memories relived before and afterwards the composition of the tracks. I have to say that my emotions are locked up within this album. But the gap in which resides the compliance between sound and subjectivity is nothing but "unknown"." (Demetrio Cecchitelli) Tracklist: 1. Arc / 2. Deepest / 3. Dimension / 4. Eleven / 5. F / 6. Sibilance / 7. Still / 8. The Usher Audio setup: Logic Pro X + Apple Audio Units, Ibanez Gio, Michael Norris plug-ins Recorded in Rimini, between March and May 2020. The Soft Capture - Snippets Of Reality Diver (DWI 32)
"Reality Diver" is the first album by the recently formed duo The Soft Capture (Copenhagen/Denmark). Even though the members have known each other for a long time, they only started producing music together recently. The first session was a challenge to find new musical expression liveprocessing a single sound source - the zither. It turned out to work very easily, and became the main part of "Reality Diver", finishing off the production and additional recordings seperately. Mainly toned down, the album’s minimal and harmonic soundscapes becomes very organic where the live played instrument merges with the electronic layers. Some arpeggios, chords and instrument noises come and go during the eight tracks, varying from one to seventeen minutes. Tracklist: 1. Sartorial 2. Insular 3. Carthography 4. Retreat 5. Foundry 6. Sigende 7. Phoebus 8. Dominion Credits: Andreas Wetterberg - electronics Claus Poulsen - zither Cover by AW Claus Poulsen is an improvising musician and producer, who has been a part of the electronic and experimental scene since the 90’s. A versatile improviser, his music projects span across genres such as ambient (solo), noise, freejazz (Blind Man’s Band) and lo-fi soundscape (Star Turbine). He has collaborated with multiple major institutions in Denmark, and has performed in the US, Brazil, and throughout Europe. In the early 00s, Andreas saw the Danish electro-acoustic music scene as over-reliant on backtracks and shallow performances of “studio music”, and he shifted his focus to combining “traditional” electronic computer music with deep improvisational practices. Using the software Max, Andreas writes algorithms to allow reacting in real-time to other performers, such as Claus, while also drawing on Western and world music traditions. Tony James Morton - Snippets of Music For Modular Synthesizers (DWI 28)
"Music For Modular Synthesizers" is a collection of generative performances by sound artist Tony James Morton from the UK. The work explores probably with human control. Constructed over a period of six months, each piece was created in a single sitting and deconstruction afterwards. Due to this, and the probabilistic nature, these works will never be recreated. Tracklist: 1. Swell / 2. Points / 3. Windows / 4. Bloom / 5. Folds Tony James Morton is a musician, composer and sound artist whose work focuses on real-time systems aesthetics. These systems created have rules and structures, but within the confines of these boundaries there is enough room for improvisation, chance and probability. This allows for a different interpretation each time, creating unique experiences of sound. ”As an artist I am fascinated in how we interface and improvise with sound. It’s in this case that I enjoy creating my own unique interfaces (or instruments) using both hardware and software. My work focuses on creating, what I like to call, audio/visual systems. These systems have rules, but within those created boundaries is enough room for users to improvise and move around the program how they feel. I like the idea of a piece of work never being interpreted the exact same way twice and these systems allow me this freedom to do so.” His work has been displayed and performed at; OXO Tower Bargehouse (London, UK), IKLECTIK (London, UK), BEAST FEaST (Birmingham, UK) and Studio 47 (Amsterdam, Netherlands). He is a featured composer on the Steam Greenlight computer game “Exception,” and is credited for soundtrack mixing in the independent short film “The King,” by Frederic Casella. Mario Cianca - Snippets Of Murano (DWI 27)
Mario Cianca is based in Rome. He choosed double bass as way of expression. The love for improvisation lead him to discover many artists of contemporary music, ambient, sound art and many more. People like Toshimaru Nakamura, Brian Eno, Berio, Stockhausen deeply influenced his concept of sound and his ideas about written music, especially about musical notation which contemplates unsatisfactory for the wide emotional expression. Nature is the mother of all music. "Murano" is a series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon. Mario recorded hours and hours just staying in front of different kind of things, charmed by the sound of the furnaces of the glassmakers or just meditating near the Stravinskij's tomb in San Michele. Mixing renaissance lute and doublebass with different kind of sounds, using Nakamura's "no input mixing board", field recordings and synth improvisation he has tried to embed the essence of Murano, emphasizing natural sounds, noises in the backgrounds often ignored by the contemporary man. Tracklist: 1. Intro 2. Registrazione sulla tomba di Stravinskij 3. Laguna 4. Murano 5. Registrazione a San Marco 6. Notte a Venezia 7. Vincent Raude - Snippets Of Forest Prism (DWI 26)
Our 26th release is from Vincent Raude from Rennes/France. On "Forest Prism" he is trying to hire a dialog between nature and technology to create imaginary landscapes avoiding human presence (sound pollution of cars, planes, cities, etc…). Vincent used three different field recordings he did in the same location (a small forest near Brest, Brittany, France, July 2020) at three different places and three different hours of the same day. So the purpose is to use these (unedited) field recordings as scores for electronic soundscapes composition in reaction to the particular space and sounds that each location recorded generates. Field recordings are the main conductors, giving frames for tones and timbres, allowing Vincent to create an electronic resonance to the sound of nature. All tracks were played live in the studio, August 2020. V. Raude: Field Recordings, Analog Modular Synth, Electronics. Mixed and Mastered by V. Raude - August 2020. Born in 1979, French artist Vincent Raude is exploring electronics since he is 11. He studied contemporary electronic music using many tools from « old school » analog studio to some all digital production environements. His works are always questioning the relationship between the musician and the machine for composition, improvisation and live performances. For more than ten years now, he has been playing with many musicians all around the world in many different genres and situations including improvisation, jazz, dub, techno, hip hop, reggae, rock, world music, ambient, etc... He also composed and played a lot of music for theater and contemporary dance.
