Watch Out for Fireballs 525: Ogre Battle 64 (Part 2)

This week we continue our discussion of Ogre Battle 64, a sprawling and mysterious strategy game that eventually sheds the need for using strategy all together. It’s also a story of revolution that stops being about a revolution partway through. This leaves us in the frustrating position of wanting to like it more than we actually do.Thanks again Will for executive producing this! Our highlighted project for this week is the creator Mech Amalia, who reviews Gunpla and plays games on her YouTube channel and Instagram.

[PREVIEW] Real Lich Hours124: Dead Man's Switch

This week we begin Dead Man’s Switch, the first of the three Shadowrun Returns games. Our runner is at the end of their rope, penniless and without any leads on jobs. Then they get a pre-recorded phone call from a deceased former colleague, promising a life-changing sum of money if they can solve the murder mystery. Best Quality Vacuum 111: Winner

Whether or not Jimmy actually misses Chuck, or feels bad about what happened between them, is all up for debate. What’s not up for debate is that Jimmy has to put on a big sad smile and stage the biggest display of grief ever. And speaking of grief: we lose Werner Ziegler too soon.

Watch Out For Fireballs 524: Ogre Battles 64 (Part 1)

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber was a big game that many, including us, missed out on. It’s a followup to a cult classic RTS for the SNES, and it follows Magnus Gallant, a young noble who ends up leading a revolution against his own kingdom. This is a strange game mostly known for its obscure mechanics, but it’s very much in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre in its story and presentation. This episode covers the game’s generalities, the prologue, and the first chapter.Big thanks to Will for executive producing this episode!

    [PREVIEW] Unfilmable 97: Ghostwatch

On Halloween of 1992, the BBC aired a new broadcast that sent the nation into a panic: real life video evidence of a brutal poltergeist at work. At least, that’s what some people thought, especially children. Ghostwatch was fictional, and they said so, but it was so well-done that it remained controversial. This episode has us diving into a cultural phenomenon that we were completely unaware of, though we’ve absolutely loved the things it’s influenced.Join us next time for an episode on The Blair Witch Project.

Real Lich Hours 123: Shadowrun Primer

Step it up, chummer, we’ve got a whole new season of Real Lich Hours for ya. That’s right, we’re beginning our coverage of the Shadowrun Returns trilogy of games! But before we get into those, we want to give a little bit of a history an overview of Shadowrun itself, a long-running cyberpunk fantasy tabletop game with amazing lore and obtuse mechanics. If you want to hear our previous podcast coverage of all things Shadowrun, here are some links:Monster in My Podcast Season 2: Paranormal Animals of North AmericaWatch Out for Fireballs! 7: Shadowrun (Genesis)Watch Out for Fireballs! 36: Shadowrun (SNES)Watch Out for Fireballs! 264: Shadowrun: DragonfallWatch Out for Fireballs! 380: Shadowrun: Hong Kong (Part 1)Watch Out for Fireballs! 381: Shadowrun: Hong Kong (Part 2)Abject Suffering 42: Shadowrun (Xbox 360)Thank you to Darrin Michelson for our art this season, and to Gwen Static for the music!

  16. 985

Everything to Guppy 1046: Monster Blitz Pt. 98

Earnestly shocking what Will says in this episode.

  17. 984

Abject Suffering 672: Powerpuff Girls: Bad Mojo Jojo (GBC)

The Powerpuff Girls was a fine cartoon. It hit a lot of people at the right age, and its groovy 90s aesthetic was instantly iconic. So it probably deserved a better game than this, a very sloppy brawler and asset hunt. We also talk about the differing legacies of Nicktoons and Cartoon Network classics, how sometimes a cat is a cartoon in real life, and ways to integrate a Venture Bros.-ass TV phone into your daily life.

  18. 983

    Best Quality Vacuum 109: Coushatta

If Jimmy wants to be a lawyer again, he needs Huell to not go to jail for lightly sandwiching a cop. Therefore, we need to commit some mail fraud. Meanwhile Werner Ziegler seals his fate, and Nacho has gone full Party Jesse mode.

  19. 982

[PREVIEW] Watch Out For Fireballs 523: Super Mario Bros. Wonder

But what if Mario were... surreal? Going back to the original design intentions of the Super Mario Bros., Nintendo delivers a game where Mario gets... a little weird. The only downside is that these little shits talk too much.

  22. 979

Abject Suffering 671: Riddick Bowe Boxing

Riddick Bowe Boxing, known as “Chavez” in some regions, is actually a very good boxing game for the Super Nintendo. So we return to the old topics of boxing in general, how quick and brutal real fights can be, Kaye’s dwindling number of pockets for pocket sand, and the bizarreness of “free use” pornography.

  23. 978

The Level 591: Don't Eat Me, You Might Choke!

Kaye, Ben, Dennis, and Moxie talk about the Homestar Runner DLC for Walkabout Mini Golf, tEverQuest Legends, Nodebuster, and much more. The Grind:Ben: Linelith. Stacklands. Jimmy gets jealous over Kim's office, Mike tries to solve a workplace dispute, Gus is pleased with Hector's progress and ends his treatment.

  25. 976

Watch Out For Fireballs 522: Parodius

Specifically, Parodius! From Myth to Laughter. We've been itching to revisit the Schmup genre and this seemed like a perfect fit. Originally a parody of Gradius, it really just proves that Schmups are really easy to just think about the game in terms of a wireframe.

  26. 975

The Pivot Presents: Cutthroat Kvetchin' 4: Let Them Eat Cupcakes

At this point, you have to be asking yourselves: Is this REALLY The Pivot?

  27. 974

The Level 590: Why So Gun?

    Best Quality Vacuum 107: Piñata

Mike deals his outburst at therapy, Kim loses interest in her Mesa Verde work, Jimmy gets into the party decorating business.

  29. 972

Watch Out For Fireballs 521: Grunn

If it looks like a horror game and quacks like a horror game, it's probably a horror game. Disguising itself (slightly) as a cozy simulator, Grunn is a gardening time loop game about solving micro mysteries in the Dutch countryside. It's neat! It's snack!

  30. 971

The Pivot Presents: Cutthroat Kvetchin' 3: Tac'o The Town

Hail Gravlox, DJ Chef (The Chef That Rocks) is in this episode.

  31. 970

    Abject Suffering 669: Space Jam

Everybody get up, it’s time to talk about the Space Jam video game now. And it’s just a weak NBA Jam byproduct, with zero cartoony wackiness to be found. We also talk about the Space Jam sequel and how it was the height of cynical corporate IP management.

  32. 969

The Level 589: People Just Don't Look Back

Kaye, Ben, Dennis, and Moxie talk about MOLE, Pronoun Palace, Order of the Sinking Star, and much more! The Grind:Ben: Saros. Order of the Sinking Star (Demo).Kaye: PHASE ZERO (Demo). Silver Pines (Demo). MOLE.Dennis: Pronoun Palace.Moxie: Diablo IV.The Multiplayer:Video game adaptations. The End Boss:Grand Theft Auto 6 to be a $100 code in a box.Call of Duty no longer day and date on Game Pass.Kyle MacLachlan is Jill Valentine’s boyfriend.mechanical-pencil.com

Jimmy starts a side hustle. Kim is loving pro bono work. Mike starts his new life... under the ground.

  34. 967

Watch Out For Fireballs 520: Neon White

They're called neons, sinners plugged from hell to do God's dirty work. But it's hard to believe they're in heaven. Old friends, ex lovers... only one of them can stay in heaven and White has a score to settle.Producer Gwen joins Kaye to discuss this speed-run focused platforming/visual novel hybrid. We like it! With some caveats.

  35. 966

The Pivot Presents: Cutthroat Kvetchin' 2: Porkchops And Sabotage

At last, the show Gary and Will have been itching to ACTUALLY do for years: The second installment of our episode-by-episode recap podcast of the 2013 Food Network competition series Cutthroat Kitchen.

  36. 965

Abject Suffering 668: Phix: The Adventure

Phix is a furby who got magnet powers, and this entire game is an exploration of how to execute on that premise as sorely as possible. But one of the bosses is a big titty Medusa monster, so we discuss whether or not we could find love if one of our arms was a snake.

  37. 964

[PREVIEW] QUAKSTAK 41: Black & White Movies

Gwen is really into Baseball, Kaye rewatches It's Always Sunny. Did I mention Gwen really wants to talk about Baseball?

  38. 963

    Best Quality Vacuum 105: Talk

[PREVIEW] Unfilmable 94: Memories of Murder

Before Parasite, before Snowpiercer, before The Host, Bong Joon Ho first gained attention with this pre-Zodiac serial killer mystery of two detectives searching for the identity of the Hwaesong Murderer. It may not be his best movie, but his talent is on full display for the first time.Join Kaye and Producer Gwen on the next episode when we cover Green Room.

  44. 957

Everything To Guppy Presents: The Labyrinth Pt. 12 - The Exodus Terminus

It's something unpredictable. But in the end? It's right. We hope you've had the time of your life.

  45. 956

    Abject Suffering 666: Hell Pie

Hell Pie is a spiritual successor to Conker’s Bad Fur day, and a successful one! It’s also not very funny because it’s trying too hard to be transgressive. However, the platforming is kind of on point, which pains us greatly to say.

  46. 955

    Best Quality Vacuum 103: Breathe

Jimmy looks for a new job, but gets interested in figurine collecting instead. Kim has some harsh words to share with Howard. Gus explains to Nacho the terms of their agreement.

  47. 954

Watch Out For Fireballs 518: Loop Hero

You make your decision to listen a podcast, you listen while you do not move, you die. You make another decision to listen to a different episode. Yet again, you do not move. You die. But at least you have a few of the meta resources you need to live a little bit longer. This is kind of what playing Loop Hero is like.

  48. 953

Abject Suffering 665: Streamer Life Simulator

Streamer Life Simulator is, believe it or not, streamer slop. An incredibly janky asset flip that tries to skate by on utter charmlessness. It’s also one of many simulator games that doesn’t really bother to make a game out of what it’s simulating. It just slaps a bathroom meter on it. In addition to complaining about this bad game, we talk about various instances of reality breaking down around Gary.

  49. 952

Everything To Guppy Presents: The Labyrinth Pt. 11

This is the closest you're getting to a Mewgenics episode, folks.

  50. 951
