#833 - JBB the MVP and ACC NIL intel

In a matter of weeks, Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje has become perhaps the most hyped recruit on the planet. His latest accomplishment was winning the MVP of the FIBA U17 World Cup leading an incredibly talented Team USA in scoring and rebounding and 3-point shooting. The Duke Basketball Roundup watched a bunch of the FIBA tournament, including every second of the championship game on Sunday. The podcast guys break down everything they have seen from JBB as he prepares to arrive on Duke's campus in the very near future. After the break, Jason and Scott dive into the topic of NIL spending with a breakdown on which ACC programs are spending what on their rosters. While the top of the list may not carry many surprises, you may find some unexpected names in the lower tiers of NIL spending. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

    #831 - NBA Draft Recap

There was exciting news and also a little bit of a bummer when it came to Dukies and the NBA Draft this year. The Duke Basketball Roundup guys hopped on to do a pod shortly after Isaiah Evans was taken in the second round (they wrapped up only minutes before Maliq Brown was picked -- bad timing). And while Isaiah's slip may have surprised some Duke fans, the podcast guys explain that it may not really matter all that much in the grand scheme of things. The DBR pod also breaks down the expected result at the top of the draft as Cameron Boozer went #3 and finds himself in a pretty good situation in Memphis. And, before they sign off, the pod crew talks a bit about Duke's West Coast trip in November which will find them playing an unexpected foe in an unexpected place. Learn more about your ad choices. Jason and Scott Rich break down what they have heard about JBB and how he projects at Duke over the next couple seasons. After the break, the DBR Podcast crew also dive into the latest social media videos being put out by the Duke basketball team, including a very revealing look at the newest member of the Duke coaching staff, KJ Conklin. One again, Jay Bilas is back to speak on Maliq's qualities and how his game translates to the next level. He obviously needs to continue to work on his offense, but can his defense carry him in the Association? After Jay wraps up, Donald and Scott react and give our final predictions on a) if Maliq will hear his name called in the second round, and b) where he could go if drafted. #828 - NBA Draft Preview: Cam Boozer (w/ Jay Bilas)

It's almost that time! The 2026 NBA Draft is almost upon us, so it's time to jumpstart our NBA Draft Preview series with Episode 828.. And once again, we're honored to have Jay Bilas join us! Donald and Jason were able to sit down recently with Jay Bilas to discuss each of the three Duke players who are eligible to be picked in the NBA Draft: Cameron Boozer, Isaiah Evans, and Maliq Brown. On this episode, we focus on Cam Boozer, widely presumed to be among the first three players to hear their names called by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. Jay provides his analysis of what makes Cam such a great player, how his game will translate to the NBA level, and what he can work on moving forward. We then hear his over/under on where he thinks Boozer will go in the draft. We then hear from Donald and Scott Rich, who react to Jay's analysis and discuss what they think Cam can do at the next level. They then offer their over/under takes on where we will hear Cam Boozer's name called and to which team. Next up in the NBA Draft Preview series: Isaiah Evans! #827 - Discussing the ACC-SEC Challenge matchups

The ACC-SEC Challenge matchups have been announced, and Donald and Scott Rich combine to discuss it all on Episode 827! Before we discuss the challenge, we give our takes on the report that the Duke-Michigan game is going to be shifted to LoanDepot Park, the home of the Miami Marlins. A baseball field?! We go through the ins and outs of keeping the game but adding the spectable of it being in a retractable roof non-basketball stadium. We then get into the ACC-SEC Challenge, first on the men’s side. Duke will head to Gainesville to take on Florida in a matchup that we all expected. Still, it’s a potential top 5 matchup and we’re pretty excited that it’s another high profile non-conference game for Duke. We also discuss the other matchups in the ACC-SEC Challenge and which ones we’re looking forward to seeing. We finally end on the women’s side with Duke drawing South Carolina, one of the two best programs in women’s basketball, and having that game in Cameron. For Kara Lawson’s bunch to take the next step in the program’s desire to ascend to the top of college basketball, they have to defeat teams like Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks. We’re excited about the opportunity the matchup presents for Duke to take that next step and show they should be considered a title contender. Make sure you’re following us! #826 - KJ Conklin, Alexander Powell join Duke staff

We’re back with Episode 826. As Jason is in the early days of his vacation, Donald is joined by Scott Rich to discuss a couple of new additions to the Duke Men’s Basketball program. First, Duke has added KJ Conklin as a new assistant coach to replace Evan Bradds, who left this offseason to become the new head coach at his alma mater, Belmont. Conklin, like Bradds, has G League coaching experience and is one of the bright young basketball minds who continues Scheyer’s desire to remain ahead of the times. We discuss his addition to the coaching staff and what he brings to the table. We then discuss the addition of Alexander Powell, who will occupy a newly created role: executive director of basketball. More importantly, Powell is a NBA guy who has excelled in salary cap management as well as analytics…for the first time, you’ll hear Donald say the word “quantitative” on a podcast! Powell is here in this new role to help Duke continue to navigate the NIL universe and remain current while also figuring out how to maintain the rising NIL numbers and keep rosters together while the program continues to push forward. Scott also gets to discuss his favorite starting 5 that Donald and Jason covered on the previous episode. We close out the show with a tribute to Liddy Grantland, who graduated from her battle with cancer over the weekend. Her father, John Grantland, is a longtime emailer and supporter of the show and Donald, Scott, and Jason send our heartfelt condolences to John, his family, and everyone who knew Liddy well and supported her during her life and courageous fight. Liddy was very active with the Duke Chapel Board and the Duke Wesley Fellowship, and we encourage any donations in her memory to Duke Wesley at https://www.dukewesley.org/liddy. DBR Bites #166 - Numbers Game and Scheduling Stuff

We are getting more little nuggets of news about the 2026-27 Duke Blue Devils. The team has released what numbers everyone will be wearing next season. And while numbers may seem less than exciting, the Duke Basketball Roundup crew is able to find something interesting to talk about in the digits each player chose.  Plus, there is scheduling news to talk about. Duke has lined up another power conference opponent for a date in MSG. And the ACC has unveiled who we will be playing and where the games will be played during conference season. It is a challenging slate for a Duke club that has only lost one conference game in each of the past two seasons. Bring it on!!  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

DBR Bites #165 - Favorite Duke Starters

Who are your favorite Duke players of all time? How hard would it be to pick a guy, just one guy, at each of the five positions on the floor? The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup dives into the question -- pick your favorite Dukies (not best, favorite). But, before Jason and Donald get to that little exercise, they spend a few moments on the arrival of players for K Academy; the ever-growing hype surrounding Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje; and the growing role of Jared McCain on the defending (and future?) NBA champs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#825 - Blackwell and JBB updates plus a Kansas exhibition game

We had a slew of news about Duke as the weekend started so the DBR Podcast crew had to hop on and talk about it. There's John Blackwell making it official -- no to the NBA Draft, yes to the Blue Devils. There's word of a really fun preseason exhibition against a blue blood program in a hallowed gymnasium. And there's a lot of buzz about international players coming over to the States, including Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, who is putting on a show in an elite youth tournament this weekend. #824 - Schedule updates and Combine evaluations

Duke Men’s Basketball has set up another terrific home-and-home series, and the NBA Draft declarees hit up the Draft Combine. Donald and Jason go over it all on Episode 824! Duke has a couple of games added to the schedule: a home-and-home with Illinois starting with a game in Cameron this fall along with Coastal Carolina on the first week of the season. We discuss those games and opine as to how the schedule might look as it starts to get filled out. We also discuss a potential exhibition game against Tennessee that would be a return game for the one that was played in Knoxville last year. We then discuss the NBA Draft Combine and how Cam Boozer, Isaiah Evans, Maliq Brown and John Blackwell are doing. We don’t get into a full draft preview, but we discuss how Boozer, Slim, and Maliq are stacking up against the others and whether Blackwell has done enough to be this year’s Cedric Coward. We then end with some information about how Duke dominates all the ACC’s TV numbers. Make sure you’re following us! #823 - Waaay too early season preview!

With the roster seemingly set, the Duke Basketball Roundup dives into two burning questions -- what are the strengths of this team and where are the weaknesses? Jason and Donald welcome frequent podcast contributors Scott Rich and Jordan Brenner for what amounts to a very, very early preview of the season. Listen in as each of the guys identifies one cause for optimism and one reason to be worried about the 2026-27 Blue Devils.  This may be an extra long episode, but it is worth it!  Learn more about your ad choices. DBR Bites #164 - Elite Practice Player and NBA Update

The DBR Podcast is back with a look at what is (maybe? probably?) the last roster move for the Blue Devils this off-season, the addition of Jacob Theodosiou from Loyola Maryland. Though it appears Thoedosiou is mostly slated to be a practice player, it is still worth breaking down his game to analyze how he will impact practices and push the rotation guys.  After the break, Jason and Donald dive into the Big Ten snag that could impact Duke's big deal with Amazon. The guys also talk about how some beloved Dukies are doing in the NBA playoffs... and would you believe that one of the most underrated players in the league is a very famous Duke rookie?  Learn more about your ad choices. #822 - Duke sets up Prime non-conference matchups in historic deal

We're not done with the news! We're back very quickly to discuss more of the Duke Basketball news coming out over the past few days on Episode 822! If Episode 821 was the recruiting episode, 822 is the news episode and we start with the news that Duke has created a deal with Amazon Prime to have three showcase non-conference games air on the streaming platform in a multiyear deal. The games in 2026-27: UConn, Michigan, and Gonzaga. We discuss the historic deal and how Duke is setting itself up to once again have a terrific non-conference schedule. We also discuss Cooper Flagg holding off his former roommate Kon Knueppel to win the NBA's Rookie of the Year. It was a banner year for both, so we sing their praises. We update everyone on what we’ve heard and speculate on the portal on DBR Bites #160. After Nik Khamenia and Darren Harris entered the transfer portal, the news cycle has gone quiet. Sure, Duke has been rumored to be considering several players from the portal, but no one on the squad has made any decisions public yet. We start by going through the roster and giving what we think is the status of those players who may have decisions to make, whether it’s to stay at Duke, enter the NBA Draft, or to transfer. Some guys are likely very torn on their decision, but we also try to reassure folks who might be getting antsy that no news means bad news for next year’s roster. We also dive into some of the players that we are reportedly considering in the transfer portal and discuss the news that Flory Bidunga has committed to Louisville just hours before he was scheduled to visit Duke. Duke will still have a great roster, but we shall have to wait and see who fills out next year’s roster as everyone makes their decisions. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #159 - Silent K Hits The Portal Too

Another day, another portal decision for a Dukie. Nik Khamenia has decided to check out what else college basketball has to offer. The Duke Basketball Roundup crew says this one stings a bit more than losing Darren Harris. Jason and Donald say they could see glimpses of what Nik could become during his freshman campaign and they are bummed that we won't get to watch that at Duke, but they also understand why Nik made this decision. And the podcast guys have a warning for worried Duke fans... do not judge the portal until you know both who is going out and who is coming in.After the break, the guys dive into a proposed NCAA rules change that could be a seismic shift in eligibility... and could open the door for another season from Maliq Brown. DBR Bites #158 - Farewell to Darren and more roster speculation

On the latest edition of DBR Bites, the podcast crew dive into a flurry of topics, starting with Darren Harris announcing his intention to enter the transfer portal. Jason and Scott are sad to lose a kid who clearly gave his all and loved the program, but they also acknowledge that Darren just didn't perform in a way that indicated he had a big future for the Blue Devils.  After the break, the guys dive into a flurry of other news. Michigan won the national title, and Scott has some thoughts on that; Duke has been connected to a big-time scoring wing who would be probably the most significant portal addition for the Blue Devils in the Scheyer era; and then there is the situation down the road, where UNC has added a head coach that no one expected. #816 - Stats Game Results Show

While the end of the Duke basketball season is always a terribly sad time, it at least allowed the Duke Basketball Roundup to bring our old friend Sam Klein back on the show for the season recap via the Stats Game. Every year, the DBR Podcast team all guess at various statistical measures of success in the preseason and then, when all is said and done, we look back on it to see how foolish (and how insightful) we all were. Even though the season ended short of the promised land, the Stats Game is always a fun way to wrap up the season. And it is even more challenging now that we have added Scott Rich to the mix as one more stat picker. Jason has a 6-4 lead on Donald (Sam has only won once) in the history of the game. DBR Bites #157 - Silly season begins

The Duke Blue Devils are in the offseason, and there are a few stories and nuggets to discuss on DBR Bites #157. Jason and Donald review some of the news stories and events that have taken place since the weekend, starting with Cameron Boozer, Jon Scheyer, and Maliq Brown. The most prestigious of the national awards come this weekend, and the trio hope to hear their name called even more as those awards are announced. We also recap the McDonald’s All-American Game, where Deron Rippey Jr. and Cameron Williams played in the Boys’ game and Autumn Fleary and Bella Flemings participated in the Girls’ game. We also address some of the horrid online abuse that Duke guard Cayden Boozer received after the UConn game and a recent article where coaches overwhelmingly think the best job in college basketball is held by Jon Scheyer. After the break, we get into some of things we’re hearing about roster construction for next season. Who stays? Who goes? Who comes via the portal? We’ve reached the beginning of silly season, so we discuss just the bit of speculation we’ve heard about what next year’s roster could look like. Make sure you’re following us! #815 - Stunned! A Miracle Ends The Season

Pain. Duke’s season ends on a final second miracle 3 pointer to UConn, and unfortunately we have to talk about it. Jason and Donald gather to recap the game that ends the 2025-26 season on Episode 815. The Blue Devils had it all going in the first half. The second half saw them let a 19 point lead slip through the cracks, and a last second turnover that lead to a miraculous 3 pointer knocks Duke out of the tournament. We talk about the good and the great performances and what gave Duke that big lead. We also talk about the stuff that fueled UConn’s comeback, all leading up to the final play. The Duke Blue Devils are in the Elite Eight! They win 80-75 over St. John’s sparked in part by a legendary performance from Caleb Foster in his return to the floor 20 days after surgery for a fractured foot. We recap the Sweet 16 win on Episode 814. Jason and Donald reflect on the win and how incredible it was, beginning with Caleb Foster’s unimaginable heroics. We discuss a lot of the other reasons why Duke is still dancing, including their toughness, the play of Isaiah Evans, and rebounding. We also get into what to work on from this game as St. John’s forced us to dig deep to win with their aggressive physicality. He gives us his take on where they’ve succeeded, where some of the struggles have been, and what the possible return of Caleb Foster and the improved health of Pat Ngongba does to the roster. We also talk about what they need to do to get past St. John’s and keep dancing in the tournament. #812 - Taking Care of TCU

It wasn't nearly as easy as the final score indicated but the Blue Devils roll on to the Sweet 16 by sending TCU home with a dominant second half performance. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down the way Duke flipped the switch and dominated the Horned Frogs over the final 16 minutes of the game. Defense, rebounding, and shot selection were major keys to this contest. Oh, and getting Big Pat back was a big boost as well. #811 - Surviving Siena!

How is your heart rate? The Duke Basketball Roundup is here to talk you down off the ledge from a nerve-wracking opening NCAA tourney game against the 16-seeded Siena Saints. It was a tale of two halves as Duke looked nothing like a top seed in the opening 20 but then found their way in the back half thanks to some real heroics from Cayden Boozer and his supporting cast (yes, it feels strange to even type that sentence). Jason and Donald break down the reasons not to be too worried about this game and point out some nice historical precedents to show that, despite a less-than-expected opening round win, Duke is still a major national title contender. DBR Bites #153 - Injury Update & Coaching Change

On the eve of the start of the NCAA Tournament for Duke comes big news... Evan Bradds, one of the brilliant assistant coaches on Scheyer's squad, is being hired to be head coach at Belmont, one of the better mid-major programs in the country. Bradds was a star player at Belmont and the allure of heading home had to appeal to him. Luckily, he has committed to sticking around the Duke program until the season is done, hopefully the first Monday in April. The Duke Basketball Roundup discusses what this move will mean for Duke and Jon Scheyer moving forward. The podcast guys also chime in with the latest on Patrick Ngongba's injury situation. Find out why he loves VCU, McNeese, and High Point... as well as why he thinks certain popular teams are safer than others.  But, before Jordan gives us his picks, we spend a little time reflecting on the Duke season, especially how the team looked in the ACC tourney playing without Caleb or Big Pat. #809 - Bracket Brains - What do we think of Duke's region?

It has only been less than 24 hours since Duke won the ACC title over Virginia but there is little time to look back as the most important games now lie before us. The Duke Basketball Roundup crew is already deep into their analysis of the brackets, especially Duke's East region, which looks absolutely loaded. Jason, Donald, and special guest Scott Rich say that if this was Duke's reward for being the overall #1 seed, what would their region have looked like if they had been a little bit lower in the rankings?!?!  After the guys break down almost every team in the region (Jason even moans about the quality of #16 seed Siena) the guys turn their gaze to the rest of the bracket. They all like Houston to get back to the Final Four and they see some real obstacles standing in Arizona's way.  This episode is the first of several to dissect the bracket ahead of Duke's first game on Thursday. #807 - Crushing Clemson on the way to the ACC title game

All the angst and worry that permeated the Duke fandom 24 hours ago melted away on this night as Duke bounced back from a subpar effort against FSU to produce a good old fashioned beatdown of Clemson. The Duke Basketball Roundup gives you all the details from a contest that really wasn't all that competitive in the second half because Duke had so thoroughly stifled Clemson in the first half. Cameron Boozer was his usual dominating self. but Jason and Donald say the story of this game was the complementary success of Cayden Boozer and Nik Khamenia, who combined for 30 points and made winning play after winning play. A little too close for comfort but Duke demonstrates "survive and advance" is what really matters in March as they take down the stubborn FSU Seminoles 80-79. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down what was a very unusual game for the Blue Devils. This was not the Duke team we have been watching lately as the Blue Devils really struggled on defense. Luckily, Isaiah Evans was in rare Showtime Slim mode as he set numerous career highs and carried the offense at times. Duke also ruled the rebounds, with a big shout out to Maliq Brown on the offensive boards. Next up, Clemson as the DBR Podcast and the Blue Devils roll on! Learn more about your ad choices. There were a lot of great performances individually and collectively as NC State had no answer after about 9 minutes had elapsed in the game. DBR Bites #148 - Rolling On To Raleigh

Fresh off a big win against Virginia, Duke has to turn it around very quickly to play NC State in Raleigh. We preview that game along with some other nuggets on DBR Bites #148. Duke has had some stinkers in Raleigh against the Wolfpack, but they're hoping to buck that trend. NC State has a lot of familiar guys from other teams, but have been inconsistent this season in several areas. We take you though what they've done this year, how they look in the metrics, and what it will take to get a win at the Lenovo Center. After the break, we have a couple of other stories to touch on. First, Nolan Smith has won a regular season conference title in his first season with Tennessee State! Could they be a potential Duke opponent if they make the NCAA Tournament? We also look at how many double digit leads Duke has held over the past couple of seasons, and we discuss the streets finally saying that Jon Scheyer might be a frontrunner for ACC and national coach of the year.
