'Education for All': Thailand expands access to Myanmar migrants
Thailand's new "Education for All" policy allows migrant and undocumented children from Myanmar to attend government schools. UNICEF Thailand has reported that migrant and stateless children are guaranteed 15 years of free education. Yet many remain out of school. The gap, education groups say, is not in the policy. At first glance, Myanmar’s 2026 matriculation exam results seem like a rare piece of good news. The nationwide pass rate climbed to 52.37%, with over 130,000 students successfully graduating. UN Special Envoy on Myanmar
The U.N. Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, addressed the General Assembly on June 19. The speech coincided with the 81st birthday of jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who’s been held in detention since the military coup on Feb. 1, 2021. Bishop raised Aung San Suu Kyi’s isolation with regime leader Min Aung Hlaing during her last visit to Myanmar in May. The ousted leader has been held in the capital Naypyidaw by the regime.
