Was Lamarck right about evolution?
Many of my readers reject evolutionary theory, at least as it’s usually presented - that is, Darwinian evolution through natural selection. But few of these evolution-sceptics are familiar with Jean-Baptiste Lamarck’s theories of evolution through inheritance of acquired characteristics. According to Edward (Ted) Steele, adding Lamarckian inheritance back into our understanding of evolution, provides answers to conundrums that strict Darwinists struggle to explain.Ted touched on Lamarckian inheritance in our previous conversation, Life, the Universe and Everything:In this conversation, we focused in on the details of how Lamarkian inheritance shows up in living creatures, and the mechanisms that researchers have discovered by which these inheritance patterns can actually occur. What we discussed:* The development of evolutionary theory in the 19th century. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck’s theories of inheritance of acquired characteristics, preceded Charles Darwin’s development of the theory of evolution by natural selection, driven by random mutation of genes. Darwin actually endorsed Lamarck’s theories, but his champions subsequently insisted that Lamarck was wrong, and that traits acquired after an individual’s birth could not be passed on to its offspring.* Evidence for Lamarckian inheritance. Ted asserts that instinctive behaviours are evidence of Lamarckian inheritance. He also describes the immune system as “the tip of the spear of such inheritance of acquired changes. Furthermore, many animal experiments demonstrate inheritance of acquired behaviours and characteristics.* Overlap between epigenetic programming and Lamarckian inheritance. According to Ted, epigenetic programming - that is, alteration of structure or function of offspring because of environmental circumstances experienced by the father or mother - is a form of ‘soft’ Lamarckian inheritance, while if similarly-impacted offspring inbreed or interbreed, these alterations will be locked in as ‘hard’ Lamarckian inheritance - that is, permanent alterations in the genetic code. * Mechanisms for Lamarckian inheritance. Multiple mechanisms by which Lamarckian inheritance could occur have been discovered and characterised, including reverse transcriptase which ‘writes’ environmentally-driven changes in RNA into DNA.* Incorporating Lamarckian inheritance mechanisms solves problems with ‘mainstream’ evolutionary theory. Not the least of these problems is the fact that random mutation occurs too slowly to explain the timeline of species development… including our own.* What it’s like to be a heretic in the scientific field. When Ted commenced his scientific career in the 1970s, even exploring Lamarckian ideas marked one out as a heretic! Voluminous evidence for such ideas has accumulated since then, but mainstream evolutionary biology still refuses to acknowledge it.* Thomas Kuhn’s notion of paradigm shifts… and what drives them (eventually), which is an accumulation of data that simply does not fit the dominant paradigm.* The need for funding of basic research to test hypotheses of Lamarckian inheritance. And some of the obstacles to such funding! Thanks for reading Empowered! In Defense of Sunlight
Following on from my interview with John MacMahon, I had the great pleasure and privilege of speaking with Rowan Jacobsen, author of the soon-to-be-published book In Defense of Sunlight. The book is a labour of love for Rowan, who spent several years digging deep into the science of the manifold benefits of sunlight exposure for human health and well-being. Along the way, he interviewed many of the top researchers in this fascinating and surprisingly controversial field. Why is it controversial to study the beneficial effects of sunlight exposure? Because (as with so many other domains of medical science) doctors and public health authorities have been reluctant to admit that the simple, one-size-fits-all message that has been promulgated since the 1980s - that any sun exposure is bad for you - is wrong-headed, and may have inadvertently contributed to the burden of chronic illnesses including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and many types of cancer. Our conversation ranged over many topics, from the heliotherapy movement of the early 20th century, to the paradox of increasing melanoma incidence in countries with strong public health messaging around sun avoidance, to the notion of sunlight exposure as a hormetic stress, which increases the efficiency of repair mechanisms as long as it’s not overdone.I wholeheartedly encourage you to pre-order Rowan’s meticulously-researched and thoroughly engaging book, In Defense of Sunlight, read it cover-to-cover, and follow his sage advice to “Get sun. Not too much. Go outside.” Get full access to Empowered! at robynchuter.substack.com/subscribe

The healing power of light
A couple of weeks ago, I came across an article in Scientific American on the health benefits of exposure to a very particular segment of the light spectrum - narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB) - for people with multiple sclerosis, psoriasis and other chronic inflammatory conditions. That led me to Cytokind, a medical device company that is aiming to get narrowband UVB light devices into the homes of people suffering from such conditions. I had a chat with Cytokind’s CEO, John MacMahon, who generously agreed to an interview. Please see the post at for extensive shownotes.Empowered! is a reader-supported publication. What has happened to our doctors?
I recently had an enlightening, and also very disturbing, conversation with retired GP, Dr Philip Bradfield Stowell.Despite being born into a multigenerational family of doctors, Philip entered medical training in the UK almost entirely unprepared for what the practice of medicine actually entailed. Suffice it to say, he did not care much for the increasingly bureaucratic, algorithmically-driven model of medicine that he encountered both in the UK, and in Australia after he emigrated here.Dr Stowell drifted into a practice focused on helping patients with complex, chronic health problems… but as he discovered, Australia’s highly-centralised Medicare system judged his patient-centred model of care as aberrant. He was hauled before an investigative tribunal to account for his three sins: spending too much time with his patients, ordering unusual tests, and not prescribing enough drugs. (I kid you not. This is what he was accused of.)What Dr Stowell witnessed during the COVID episode persuaded him to leave the practice of medicine forever. I’m sure, after listening to this conversation, that his retirement was a sad loss to patients who are desperate to find a skilled doctor who actually cares about diagnosing them accurately and treating them effectively. Here are some of the questions and topics we discussed:* What common misconceptions does the general public hold about doctors, and the practise of medicine?* How does the selection process for entry into medical school, and the education of doctors (in medical school, during internship/residency, and postgraduate) influence who becomes a doctor, and how doctors practise?* Was there a ‘golden age’ when medical education and the practise of medicine were any better than today, or have there always been fundamental flaws in the system?* How does the current system maintain conformity, and what happens to doctors who do not conform?* If you were granted the magical power to reform medicine, what would you do?* Realistically, do you think the current system is capable of reform?* What advice would you give to people with respect to their engagement with the medical system? Should people avoid doctors altogether, or are there any aspects of routine medical care that have value? If someone really needs a doctor, how should they go about finding a good one?* What advice would you give to young people who are considering a career in medicine? Finally, I apologise for the audio quality. I was using an external microphone but Dr Stowell was not, so our audio volumes were very different. I’ve done my best to manually edit our respective audio volumes but you may still have to adjust the volume as you listen. Please persist; this is a conversation you will not want to miss. And finally, if you would like to support my work, I would be grateful if you would consider a paid subscription at https://robynchuter.substack.com/subscribe. Twins, SIDS and vaccination
This interview is a follow-up to my previous interview with Dr Ted Steele and Dr Paul Goldwater on their recently-published paper on the link between vaccination and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).Dr Paul Goldwater returned to discuss his latest paper, on twins, respiratory infections, vaccination and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS): ‘Insights from twin Sudden Infant Death Syndrome studies could reveal an aetiopathogenetic pathway to sudden infant death through immunopathology’.The conventional view is that the increased susceptibility to SIDS seen in twins, is largely or entirely due to the fact that twins are born relatively prematurely (typically at 37 weeks, in contrast to the gestational length of 40 weeks for singleton pregnancies). But Paul is convinced, on the basis of a large body of research, that there’s more to this story than is usually acknowledged. In this interview, Paul and I discuss the following:* Why respiratory infections increase the risk of SIDS, and why SIDS research has not been focused on this well-established link;* The impact of ‘space weather’ on respiratory infection rates - pretty wild stuff!* Contributing factors to the higher rate of SIDS seen in twins, including* Reduced time in the womb, to receive transplacental antibodies from the mother;* Reduced rates of breastfeeding in twins, compared to singletons; and* Altered immune system development in twins* Common features in reports of death in twins following vaccination;* Risk factors for higher twin pregnancy rates;* The relationship between the numbers of vaccine antigens included on different countries’ infant vaccination schedule, and the rates of infant mortality in those countries;* What the term ‘hyperimmunisation’ means, and how it is induced by the current vaccination schedule;* How hyperimmunisation can backfire, resulting in increased susceptibility to infection, as well as to autoimmune disease;* Why injecting vaccines that induce antibodies in the blood, just doesn’t make sense for respiratory infections that don’t lead to viraemia (viruses entering the bloodstream)… and what vaccine manufacturers should be doing instead;* Paul’s advice to parents who are trying to decide which vaccines to administer to their child, and when;* Circumstances in which babies and children should not be vaccinated;* Sex-linked differences in responses to particular vaccines, and the increased death rates seen in female babies after certain vaccines;* The link between aluminium adjuvants and autoimmune conditions;* The enormous damage done to both the public conversation and the research on vaccines, by the weaponised use of the term ‘antivaxxer’;* The difference between public health and medical practice, and why they are fundamentally incompatible fields;* The types of research that urgently need to be done to fill in the gaps in our understanding of the impact of the current vaccination schedule, especially on twins (and other higher order multiples, such as triplets and quadruplets), and why this research has not been done; and* Alternative models for funding, peer-reviewing and publishing vital research on health. We also discussed the editorial written by associate editor of the BMJ, Peter Doshi, ‘Medical response to Trump requires truth seeking and respect for patients’.See also my previous Substack on public health vs the practice of medicine, ‘Your doctor is not your doctor’.See Paul’s researcher profile and previous publications here.
