Escaping Gilead! - The Testaments Podcast (Episode 110)
THE TESTAMENTS – “Secateurs” – While Becka faces the consequences of her actions, Agnes and Daisy must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect her. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)LUCY HALLIDAY, CHASE INFINITI, ROWAN BLANCHARD Gilead’s history is being re-written, and the resistance is wearing school green. In this jam-packed season finale breakdown, Paul and Caroline dive deep into “Secateurs,” an episode that changes the game for every major player. From high-stakes smuggling operations to heartbreaking sacrifices, we analyze a finale that feels less like an ending and more like the birth of an army. THE TESTAMENTS – “Secateurs” – While Becka faces the consequences of her actions, Agnes and Daisy must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect her. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)ELISABETH MOSS 🎧 Inside the Episode: Daisy’s Defiance: Daisy goes rogue from Mayday, sneaks out in a honey truck, and goes toe-to-toe with June Osborne herself. We discuss Daisy’s refusal to treat her friends as collateral damage and that massive advice she drops for June: *”Believe in someone other than yourself.” The Unholy Alliance: In a desperate bid to save Becka from the Wall or the Handmaid life, Aunt Lydia and Aunt Vidala form an unexpected, fragile truce. We break down Vidala’s past, the tragic fate of Becka’s mother, and how the Aunts use Agnes’ own logic to rewrite Gilead’s history. Agnes Uncovers the Truth: It’s a devastating week for Agnes. After blowing up the Weston engagement by exposing Dr. Groves, she faces the drunken wrath of Paula—leading to a shocking revelation about her true parentage. But the real tear-jerker? The final courthouse sequence where Daisy delivers the ultimate truth: *“Your mom is June and you are Hannah.” A Tragic Wedding: Our hearts break for Becka, who is drugged up just to get through her forced wedding to Garth while her mother faces the gallows. We discuss that haunting final kiss with Agnes and what Garth locking her away means for next season. The New Uniforms: That final shot of Agnes, Daisy, and Shu walking down the hall with locked pinkies gave us major *Handmaid’s Tale* Season 1 vibes. If Gilead didn’t want an army, they shouldn’t have given these girls uniforms. #TheTestaments #HandmaidsTale #Podcast #TVReview #Gilead #JuneOsborne #AuntLydia The Testaments 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 Follow the Show On Hulu | Facebook | Our Facebook Group | X Follow the Hosts on X Caroline | Paul This podcast was recorded, edited, and produced by Paul and Caroline Daley at Pod Clubhouse Studios and is a Pod Clubhouse Original Production.

Escaping Gilead! - The Testaments Podcast (Episode 109)
THE TESTAMENTS – “Marat Sade” – As Daisy steps into a new role, she considers what she’s willing to lose to help her friends. (Disney/Russ Martin)CHASE INFINITI The shortest episode of the season, but maybe the most layered. Right off the bat, Caroline and Paul dissect this episode’s name and what its use may imply. Some hints: it’s actually a derivation of a much longer name – The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, and it involves the French Revolution, an asylum, the Marquis de Sade, and the murder of a revolutionary. Go check out the Wikipedia entry for the movie based on the play here or about the play itself here. This is our favorite kind of episode to take apart and discuss all of the different parts that make it stand out. The deep title, the visual motifs, the foreshadowing – this episode had a LOT for the viewers to chew on and in one of the longest podcasts of this series so far, Paul and Caroline certainly have full… mouths? I’m not sure that metaphor works. We would never physically chew into the microphone during a podcast. I just mean to say that the podcast is dense this week. (Disney/Russ Martin)BRAD ALEXANDER, CHASE INFINITI In “Broken”, viewers got one of the shortest episodes of the first season – BUT that didn’t hold it back from delivering a substantial emotional punch. Escaping Gilead! – The Testaments Podcast (Episode 106)
THE TESTAMENTS – “Stadium” – As the Aunts sift through ancestry records to finalize matches, Agnes plots for her chance at love. Meanwhile, Lydia contemplates the choices that shaped her rise in Gilead. (Disney/Russ Martin)CHASE INFINITI What an episode! In “Stadium”, we finally looked into Lydia’s backstory. We’d gotten a peek only once during the entire run of The Handmaid’s Tale, but now we know where Lydia’s journey to becoming Aunt Lydia truly began. No one was more surprised than your hosts to see that Commander Judd had been there since the beginning. For better or worse, Aunt Lydia became what she needed to become as her drive to live her life according to her “resolve” fell to survival mode. We think Aunt Lydia has secretly switched back to “resolve” mode, but time will tell. THE TESTAMENTS – “Stadium” – As the Aunts sift through ancestry records to finalize matches, Agnes plots for her chance at love. Meanwhile, Lydia contemplates the choices that shaped her rise in Gilead. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)THE TESTAMENTS Meanwhile, during the current timeline, the Aunts converged and created matches between the new greens and the eligible commanders. Think of how much harder the process must have been, given their lack of access to technology! By hand, the Aunts must manage not only the political impacts of their decisions, but the limited gene pool in Gilead’s reproducing population. I wonder how close the relations can get before they nix a match. THE TESTAMENTS – “Stadium” – As the Aunts sift through ancestry records to finalize matches, Agnes plots for her chance at love. The Testaments Season1 Episode 5
THE TESTAMENTS – “Ball” – At a debutante-style ball where Green girls are paraded before Commanders; the illusion of elegance begins to fray. Agnes discovers Garth’s status has changed. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)CHASE INFINITI Agnes’ season 1 journey has led up to this point, the ball (or the prom as some call it) is her chance to make an impression on eligible commanders. The prospect of it all scares and excites her. The chances that she’s ever touched a man for an extended time are low – and that’s all she’s expected to do at the ball! For her, it’s overwhelming and exhilarating – for the viewers, it’s just sad and pretty uncomfortable watching the older men with the young women. Meanwhile, our supporting characters endured a much less exciting time. One of Becka’s dance partners offered to spike her drink – which she could not refuse. Shu and Daisy rally behind the scenes to try and help Becka minimize the damage her drunken stumbling could cause her chances to find a good match (little as she wants a match). Daisy learns that she doesn’t have an easy path out of Gilead through her Mayday connections from Garth. Now that we mention Garth, Mr. Perfect gets a chance to dance with Agnes, leaving her breathless and riddled with desire. And upon learning that Garth’s promotion to Commander is only a couple weeks away, her fantasies may indeed become reality. Paul and Caroline really doubt it, but it’s nice for her to have had that moment of romantic dreaming. THE TESTAMENTS – “Green Tea” – As the Green girls gather for a tea party, Daisy struggles to keep on task, while Agnes begins to understand what being a woman in Gilead means. (Disney/Russ Martin)HEATHER KOSIK, LUCY HALLIDAY This week’s episode of The Testaments, “Green Tea”, takes us further into Gilead’s arcane traditions with the plums hosting high tea as an expression of thanks to the Aunts. BUT there are also subtleties with lasting consequences for even the slightest misstep. Needless to say, the girls are on edge. Meanwhile, Daisy has no official role in the tea. She attends and observes the behind-the-scenes activities… and snoops around and speaks with Garth, the young Mayday agent masquerading as a Mackenzie family guardian. She’s getting nervous that Gilead’s forces are tightening the noose around her as she sees her Mayday comrades swinging from the gallows. Needless to day, she is also on edge. You know who’s not on edge? Aunt Lydia. She’s just here for the cake. Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 10
THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season 6 Episode 10 – “The Handmaid’s Tale” – June reflects on her experiences in Gilead and decides what to do next. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)ELISABETH MOSS, CHERRY JONES It’s hard to say goodbye, but here we are—the final podcast for The Handmaid’s Tale has arrived! Paul and Caroline dive deep into the 10th and final episode of Season 6, fittingly titled “The Handmaid’s Tale.” THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season 6 Episode 10 – “The Handmaid’s Tale” – June reflects on her experiences in Gilead and decides what to do next. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)MADELINE BREWER After the thrilling climax of Episode 9, this finale took a quieter approach, focusing on resolution, emotional closure, and laying the groundwork for The Testaments, the upcoming sequel series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel. Paul and Caroline generally appreciated the emotional payoff and the sense of closure for characters we’ve followed closely for eight years. But not in every case. THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season 6 Episode 10 – “The Handmaid’s Tale” – June reflects on her experiences in Gilead and decides what to do next. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)YVONNE STRAHOVSKI They didn’t shy away from highlighting some storytelling choices that didn’t fully land. While not as critical as some online commenters, they felt that the finale spent a bit too much time on indulgent flashbacks and montages, time which could have been better used to deepen certain pivotal moments. The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 8
THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season 6 Episode 8 – “Exodus” – June and Moira execute their dangerous plan. Serena makes a big commitment. (Disney/Steve Wilkie). The revolution has begun. In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 8 “Exodus”, the carefully plotted rebellion against Gilead erupts during Serena Joy’s wedding, shifting the tide of power in ways we’ve long hoped—and feared. On this week’s podcast, Paul and Caroline unpack the episode’s three central storylines and what they mean for the final stretch of the series. The episode unfolds through three distinct perspectives: Serena’s Wedding:It’s the centerpiece of the rebellion. The plan to bomb Jezebels has been replaced with something quieter but just as deadly: poison. Serena’s maroon wedding cake becomes a focal point—rich in symbolism, according to Paul and Caroline, who debate its possible meanings. The poison weakens the guests, setting the stage for the handmaids to strike later that night. But what comes next for Serena? In the final scenes inside her and Wharton’s new home, we’re left wondering: Is she a survivor, a pawn, or a player? THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season 6 Episode 8 – “Exodus” – June and Moira execute their dangerous plan. Serena makes a big commitment. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)ELISABETH MOSS June’s Command:June leads from the front, orchestrating the handmaids’ infiltration and managing the rebellion in real time. Paul and Caroline discuss June’s transformation into a true field general—steely, smart, and still deeply human. They also wrestle with the looming question: what does a “win” even look like for June at this point, and is it within reach? THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season 6 Episode 8 – “Exodus” – June and Moira execute their dangerous plan. Serena makes a big commitment. (Disney/Steve Wilkie)THE HANDMAID’S TALE Aunt Lydia’s Reckoning:The final storyline brings us to Aunt Lydia, whose breaking point finally arrives at the Red Center. Surrounded by Janine and the other handmaids, she is forced to confront the consequences of her life’s work. In her quiet moments and subtle gestures, a transformation begins—one that may redefine her future in Gilead. The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 3 – “Devotion” (Hulu)ANN DOWD The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 3, “Devotion,” brings the action, the politics, and the heartbreak. Hosts Paul and Caroline are back to unpack it all in our latest podcast episode. This time, June and Nick join forces on a high-stakes mission: rescuing Luke and Moira, who are trapped in no man’s land after their work with Mayday draws the deadly attention of Gilead’s guardian patrols. The tension is thick, and the emotional stakes are even higher. Meanwhile, in New Bethlehem, Commander Lawrence and Serena Joy begin their uneasy alliance as they host international delegates. The goal? Repatriate American refugees back to Gilead—under the pretense of safety and peace. But can such a place ever truly be safe? And back in the heart of Gilead, Aunt Lydia makes a devastating discovery: Janine has been sent to Jezebels. For Lydia, it’s a cruel betrayal of everything she believed about Janine’s value—and a sign that the system she’s long upheld may be more broken than she can justify. In this podcast episode, we explore the theme of devotion—to people, causes, and institutions—and how that devotion is tested at every turn. With thrilling rescues, shifting alliances, and moral reckoning, “Devotion” delivers a heavy, layered hour of television. The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 2 – “Exile” (Hulu)YVONNE STRAHOVSKI The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 2, “Exile,” aired alongside the premiere—and we’re back with our thoughts, theories, and plenty to say about these seismic shifts. In this episode, we finally get a long-awaited reunion: June and Nichole are with June’s mother, Holly, living in the remote safety of Alaska. It’s a rare moment of peace for June, but you can feel the storm building on the horizon. Meanwhile, Serena’s journey takes a major turn. After arriving at a tranquil farm that shelters women and children refugees, it seems like she’s found a safe haven—but it’s short-lived. Gilead knows exactly where she is. And when Commander Lawrence offers her a way back—not just as a citizen, but as a leader in New Bethlehem—Serena chooses power over peace. In this episode of the podcast, hosts Paul and Caroline dive deep into the emotional weight of the mother-daughter reunion, the symbolism behind the episode’s title, and what Serena’s latest decision says about her ongoing struggle for identity and control. We’re witnessing a season that’s not pulling any punches—and “Exile” proves that safety and freedom are never guaranteed in The Handmaid’s Tale. Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Nick (Max Minghella), shown. (Photo by: Sophie Giraud/Hulu) After last week’s disastrous trip into Gilead, we spent this week watching Luke pace around his makeshift cell next to cool-as-a-cucumber June. And did all that nervous energy do him any good? Next time you decide to join the Resistance, take some self-defense courses beforehand, Luke. Caroline has a lot to say again about Luke’s overall lack of understanding when it comes to Gilead and its zealous supporters. Elsewhere in Gilead, Lydia manages to make an example out of a rapist – as long as it aligns with Commander Lawrence’s need to wipe an enemy off the board. Or at least that’s Paul’s theory. What could go wrong when June and Luke decide to sneak over the border and into Gilead? No “Fairytale” ending in this one. Seriously. Certain members of this podcast were yelling at the screen when Luke pushed June to take Jaeden’s advice to rest up in the Bowl-o-rama before heading back into Canada’s safe embrace. As you’ll hear in this podcast, Caroline has strong beliefs about Luke’s dim future on planet earth given how little he’s learned over the years. Then there’s Caroline’s theories on Serena and her possible status as a handmaid in exile, rather than “unofficial ambassador”. Having Serena Joy and June in close quarters positioned within spitting distance of each other was never going to work out, was it? One might think Serena would only receive threats and aggressiveness from June, but as the title of this episode proves with “Dear Offred”, she’s perfectly willing to continue trying to prove who’s the boss. Back in Gilead, Lydia confides in Janine and asks for her help re-entering the human race after being denied reforms to the handmaid system by Commander Lawrence. The Handmaid’s Tale 503 “Border”. Elisabeth Moss as June. Image by Hulu. Copyright 2022. Seeing Serena Joy lay her oily hands on Hannah during Fred’s funeral must be driving June nuts. In “Border”, we see her scrambling and starting to figure out what she can do. Can she get to Hannah? Not easily. Can she get to Serena? Much more easily. Serena doesn’t get quite what she’d hoped for from the Commanders in Gilead. Something tells me she’ll be able to make the absolute most of her time in exile though. And Lydia. Hannah and particularly Serena Joy’s proximity to her. Now that we know that next season, the 6th, will be the show’s final, we can start to look for what an endgame might look like. Escaping Gilead! The Handmaid's Tale Podcast (Episode 408)
PHOTO EMBARGOED FOR USE UNTIL June 2nd, 2021. The Handmaid’s Tale — “Testimony” – Episode 408 — June confronts Fred and Serena in court and challenges Emily to face a painful reminder of her Gilead past. Lawrence presents Aunt Lydia with a newly captured, familiar Handmaid. Moira (Samira Wiley), June (Elisabeth Moss), and Emily (Alexis Bledel), shown. (Photo by: Sophie Giraud/Hulu) This week we chat about: June’s style of “healing” and whether or not she’s playing with fire trying to rile up the former handmaids The previously thought unlikely source of support the Waterfords found in Canada Lydia’s struggle to remain relevant And pretty much everything else in the episode Season 3: 301+302 | 303 | 304 | 305 | 306 | 307 | 308 | 309 | 310 | 311 | 312 | 313 Season 4: 401 | 402 | 403 | 404 | 405 | 406 | 407 Follow the Show On Hulu | Facebook | Our Facebook Group | Twitter Follow the Hosts on Twitter Caroline | Paul Note: For the first three seasons, you might have been listening to Paul and Caroline as the “Daley Review”, faithfully analyzing each episode of The Handmaid’s Tale. Escaping Gilead! The Handmaid's Tale Podcast (Episode 407)
The Handmaid’s Tale — “Home” – Episode 407 — June struggles with her newfound freedom, reuniting with loved ones and confronting her nemesis, Serena. June (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), shown. (Photo by: Sophie Giraud/Hulu) Man, this scene felt good to watch. June has had a pretty frustrating last few weeks, what with getting shot, scaring her daughter, killing her friends, and getting bombed, June has needed a personal “win”. Angel Flight is great and all for Rita and the 85 kids – but none of them were HER kid. Sure, she got out of Gilead, but she has unfinished business there. In this scene, she gets to take a little something just for her and I for one (Paul) am glad she took it. In fact, I’m surprised she didn’t lash out and strike Serena. After all, Serena established during June’s pregnancy that a little hitting was perfectly OK. I just hope that this bit of completely justifiable catharsis doesn’t come back to bite June. Paul and Caroline also talk about: June’s adjustment to life in Canada The Waterfords’ new uneasy alliance The “love” scene with Luke Season 3: 301+302 | 303 | 304 | 305 | 306 | 307 | 308 | 309 | 310 | 311 | 312 | 313 Season 4: 401 | 402 | 403 | 404 | 405 | 406 Follow the Show On Hulu | Facebook | Our Facebook Group | Twitter Follow the Hosts on Twitter Caroline | Paul Note: For the first three seasons, you might have been listening to Paul and Caroline as the “Daley Review”, faithfully analyzing each episode of The Handmaid’s Tale. Escaping Gilead! The Handmaid's Tale Podcast (Episode 406)
The Handmaid’s Tale — “Vows” – Episode 406 — After a shocking reunion with a dear friend, June contemplates the possibility of freedom, and confronts the unfulfilled promises she’s made to herself and to Luke. Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and June (Elisabeth Moss), shown. (Photo by: Sophie Giraud/Hulu) Last week, Caroline remarked how the pace of this season was moving MUCH faster than usual and that she expected June to be flying the space shuttle in this episode. This Great Lakes hauler wasn’t the space shuttle, but Caroline still gets full points for June’s hare-brained attempt to steal and pilot a lifeboat back to Gilead. Jeez. That statement is almost too ironic to type. Anyway, in short, Moira was real, not a dream. Her girlfriend is a hard-ass with a nametag-maker for those just-in-case scenarios (like intelligence assets stowing away on your boat). June needs a CAT scan. Hopefully Luke cleaned up his house before coming to the dock. We talk about this stuff, and: June’s irrational, concussion-fueled insistence that she returns to Gilead for Hannah Moira’s hard-hitting tactics to keep June by her side and heading north Luke’s hands-off approach to escorting June off the boat Season 3: 301+302 | 303 | 304 | 305 | 306 | 307 | 308 | 309 | 310 | 311 | 312 | 313 Season 4: 401 | 402 | 403 | 404 | 405 Follow the Show On Hulu | Facebook | Our Facebook Group | Twitter Follow the Hosts on Twitter Caroline | Paul Note: For the first three seasons, you might have been listening to Paul and Caroline as the “Daley Review”, faithfully analyzing each episode of The Handmaid’s Tale. Escaping Gilead! The Handmaid's Tale Podcast (Episode 405)
The Handmaid’s Tale – “Chicago” – Episode 405 – June seeks out more active rebels in the Chicago war zone, while Janine tries to help her fit in with their new group of survivors. Moira goes on her first field aid mission. Janine (Madeline Brewer) and June (Elisabeth Moss), shown. (Photo by: Sophie Giraud/Hulu) Janine made fast friends in Chicago, but June had trouble being content with her new surroundings in “Chicago”. Unlike the observant, strategic thinker we met in Season 1, June has become more impatient and rash in her decision-making. Case in point, this week June essentially lost patience with Steven (Janine’s new boyfriend) and his unwillingness to pointlessly engage a superior force with his rag-tag, semi-armed squad of civilians. What a wimp! And just like that, June wants to jump ship for a more aggressive chapter in the Resistance. She never got the chance to find them though as wheelings and dealings back in Gilead-proper sent bombers headed straight for her. Paul and Caroline chat up these plot points, as well as: Aunt Lydia’s new ambitious streak Commander Lawrence’s willingness to compromise anything to ensure his survival and advancement Janine ongoing quest for a normal life in an anything but normal world Season 3: 301+302 | 303 | 304 | 305 | 306 | 307 | 308 | 309 | 310 | 311 | 312 | 313 Season 4: 401 | 402 | 403 | 404 Follow the Show On Hulu | Facebook | Our Facebook Group | Twitter Follow the Hosts on Twitter Caroline | Paul Note: For the first three seasons, you might have been listening to Paul and Caroline as the “Daley Review”, faithfully analyzing each episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.
