ev.news Briefly: Rivian, VW, Hyundai & more | 07 Sep 2026
It's ev.news Briefly for Monday 07 September 2026, only todays headlines and nothing else, in just 4 minutes if you haven't got time for the full show.Patreon supporters fund this show, get the episodes ad free, as soon as they're ready and are part of the ev.news Community. You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsRIVIAN OS 2 REACHES BOTH R1 GENERATIONSRivian began rolling out update 2026.31 on Friday, extending RivianOS 2 to R1T and R1S models from both R1 generations alongside R2, adding a vertical status bar, quick controls and media player placeable on either side of the centre display, a rebuilt Settings 2 app with universal search, Real-Time Route Alerts for speed cameras and police presence in Google Maps navigation, and Rivian Unified Intelligence behind a "Hey Rivian" assistant that can control vehicle functions. Hardware still divides the platform: R2 and second-generation R1 vehicles run Unreal Engine 5 for real-time 3D visualisations while first-generation R1s stay on Unreal Engine 4 to preserve screen responsiveness, reflecting the first-gen's 17 electronic control units against the 2024 second-gen's seven-unit zonal architecture, dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processors and roughly ten times the processing power.REPORTED ID. POLO ORDERS TOP 30,000 BEFORE LAUNCHMore than 30,000 orders for Volkswagen's ID. Polo, priced from €24,995 (about $29,000), have reportedly been placed across Europe before the hatchback's official sales launch, with pre-sales open since late April, demand strongest in Germany and most buyers ordering without having seen or driven the car. A major VW dealer group says the range is effectively sold out with waits of at least ten months, while Volkswagen attributes the delays to strong demand and capacity planned in advance at its Martorell plant in Spain, where it is progressively increasing production.HYUNDAI OPENS STARIA ELECTRIC ORDERS IN EUROPEHyundai has opened European orders for the Staria Electric from €57,450 (about $66,800) for the German Trend nine-seater, using an 84 kWh battery, a 160 kW (218 hp) front motor, up to 430 km (267 miles) WLTP range and an 800V architecture that charges 10-80% in about 20 minutes at 350 kW, plus internal and external 16-amp V2L. At 5,253 mm it is 200 mm longer than the IONIQ 9 and larger than the Kia PV5 and VW ID. Buzz, with up to 1,303 litres of luggage space in nine-seat form, a Prime version adding electric sliding doors, powered tailgate, Highway Assistant 1.5 and a 230V socket, and a Calligraphy seven-seater from €66,950 ($77,800) with Nappa leather, BOSE audio and reclining second-row seats.ELECTRIC VEHICLES OUTSELL PETROL CARS IN AUSTRALIAFully electric vehicles outsold petrol cars in Australia for the first time last month, with 27,078 EVs registered against 25,824 petrol and 23,608 diesel vehicles, taking one in four new-car sales. Including plug-in hybrids, battery-powered vehicles reached 36% of the market while petrol and diesel together fell below 50%, a shift BYD's Paul Ellis put down to falling reluctance and an influx of cheaper Chinese models, leaving public charging capacity as the open question.UK ELECTRIC VAN SHARE HITS RECORD 16.3%UK electric van registrations rose 25.9% to 2,395 units in August, a record 16.3% share of the light commercial vehicle market, with battery-electric vans at 11.0% of new LCV registrations in the year to August. August is traditionally a low-volume month ahead of September's numberplate change, so the share gain may overstate the trend and September will be the clearer test of sustained fleet demand.US DIESEL AVERAGE REACHES $5.85 A GALLONUS diesel hit a record national average of $5.85 a gallon on Friday, according to AAA data cited by the New York Times, 55% above the level at the start of the US war against Iran in late February and above the previous peak set in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. Diesel powers heavy-duty pickups, commercial fleets and farming, so the rise feeds through to supermarket prices, landing weeks before the midterms in a political climate hostile to EVs despite the household cost relief that switching away from the pumps could deliver.BYD OFFERS UK DISCOUNTS OF UP TO £2,500BYD will cut UK prices by up to £2,500 ($3,300) across its DM-i plug-in and electric range from 10 to 21 September in what it calls its biggest-ever sales event, covering the Dolphin Surf, Dolphin, Sealion 07, Seal U DM-i and Atto 2 DM-i, as the UK's record 25.6% BEV share for the first eight months of 2026 still sits below the 33% mandate. The brand has registered more than 110,000 UK vehicles since March 2023, with registrations up 98% to over 48,000 through August and market share rising to 3.48% from 1.92%, and the Europe-specific Dolphin G DM-i arrives this month from £250 ($330) a month.SPD BACKS EU TARIFFS ON CHINESE PLUG-IN HYBRIDSGermany's Social Democratic Party has backed extending EU tariffs to Chinese plug-in hybrids, closing a gap in measures that levy up to 45% on Chinese-built electric vehicles but leave hybrids untouched, setting out the position in an economic-policy paper calling for more resolute protection against "unfair practices". The stance is a notable shift for the CDU's junior coalition partner, given Germany opposed the 2024 EV tariffs and has long resisted tough measures on China for fear of retaliation against key industries.BC2BC LAUNCHES WEST COAST TRUCK CHARGING CORRIDORThe British Columbia to Baja California ZEV Corridor, or BC2BC, has launched along the I-5, linking California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Baja California with an initial deployment of 20 EV charging stations and three hydrogen fuelling stations for the estimated 10,000 trucks using the route daily. CalSTA, CALSTART/Drive to Zero and UC Davis's Institute of Transportation Studies are coordinating planning and investment, with Volvo Group North America, Southern California Edison, Tesla, EV Realty and King Fio Trucking represented at the Port of Long Beach launch.TESLA AND BYD DRIVE KOREAN IMPORT GROWTHImported vehicle sales in Korea rose 9.2% year on year to 29,817 units in August, driven largely by Tesla and BYD, while all five domestic carmakers recorded declines. Union walkouts from July into August lasted around 60 hours and were estimated to have cost about 55,000 vehicles of production, contributing alongside fewer summer holiday production days to a 7.6% fall at Kia, and growth in a market long led by BMW and Mercedes-Benz came mainly from lower-priced EVs.STELLANTIS OFFERS REFURBISHED BATTERIES FOR MOST EV MODELSStellantis is making refurbished high-voltage batteries available for most battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models across its brands, remanufactured to OEM specification with the same performance characteristics and warranty terms as MOPAR original parts. The company says the approach extends product life and prevents waste, saving up to 80% of raw materials and up to 40% of CO2 emissions against new parts, building on its earlier supply of refurbished EV batteries for stationary storage including at Rome Airport.

ev.news Europe: Volkswagen Just Put Four EV Factories at Risk
Volkswagen is preparing to quit building cars at four German factories. Every one of them builds EVs.On Thursday this week, in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen's supervisory board voted unanimously — a day ahead of schedule — to approve something called Future Plan 2030.50,000 more job cuts by the end of the decade. The model range gutted and cut roughly in half by 2035. And four German plants placed under a review that could end vehicle production at all of them. Those four plants are Emden. Zwickau. Hanover. And Audi's Neckarsulm.Zwickau was the first large car factory in Europe converted entirely to electric vehicles and Emden was the second. Hanover currently builds the ID. Buzz whilst Neckarsulm builds the e-tron GT and the A6 e-tron.Volkswagen spent something like 2.2bn euros converting Zwickau and Emden alone.Six years later, the company says it cannot demonstrate a competitive future use for either of them.So the question isn't "is Volkswagen in trouble."We knew that already. The question is why the factories it electrified hardest are the ones it now says it can’t justify - and what that tells you about how Europe built its EV industrial policy.

[ARCHIVE] ev.news Briefly: Genesis, AUDI, EV Charging & more | 20 Aug 2026
It's ev.news Briefly for Thursday 20 August 2026, only todays headlines and nothing else, in just 4 minutes if you haven't got time for the full show.Patreon supporters fund this show, get the episodes ad free, as soon as they're ready and are part of the ev.news Community. You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsGENESIS UNVEILS 648BHP GV90 ELECTRIC SUVGenesis has revealed the GV90, a production version of the Neolun concept and its largest, most luxurious model yet, measuring almost 5.3m long with a 123.5kWh battery, up to 311 miles of range, 800V charging at 350kW and a 648bhp dual-motor setup with limited-slip differentials on each axle. It goes on sale in South Korea next month and reaches Europe in the first half of 2027, with UK orders expected to open above £100,000.IMPORTER BRINGS CHINESE-MARKET AUDI EVS TO EUROPEAuto China is importing, homologating and registering Chinese-market AUDI E5 Sportback and E7X electric cars for European sale, undercutting Audi's own models — the 776hp E5 costs €28,000 less than the 543hp S6 Sportback e-tron — with a charging adapter and a two-year warranty through independent repairers. The risks include unclear parts supply, workshops unfamiliar with the cars, driver-assistance tuned for Chinese roads, and the precedent of Volkswagen suing over imported ID.6s in 2023, after which those cars were destroyed.68% OF AUSTRALIAN EV OWNERS FLAG CHARGING GAP IN NRMA SURVEYAn NRMA survey of 42,472 members, including 1,730 EV owners, found 68% of EV owners concerned about a lack of charging infrastructure, while purchase price and range anxiety are fading and EVs near cost parity with petrol cars over a vehicle's life. Fuel costs were the top worry for combustion drivers at 75%, and electrified vehicles took 49.16% of Australia's new-car market in Q2, including 69,414 battery electric vehicles.VOLVO'S EUROPEAN PLANTS TO BUILD GEELY BRANDS FROM 2028Geely Auto Group's new chief An Conghui says Volvo's European factories are expected to build luxury models for sibling brands such as Zeekr and Lynk & Co from 2028, with the 61-year-old Ghent plant in Belgium a likely candidate following an upgrade deal with the Belgian and Flemish governments. Building in Europe would sidestep the EU's 18.8% tariff on Geely's Chinese-built EVs and support the group's target of 1.5 million annual sales outside China.CHERY TO OPEN UK R&D CENTRE AT MILLBROOK IN LATE 2026Chery will open a research and development centre at UTAC Millbrook in Bedfordshire in late autumn 2026, starting with chassis and driver-assistance tuning for British roads before extending into autonomous driving and AI, alongside a pact with Nissan to explore building its UK cars at Sunderland. Chinese brands took about 16% of UK registrations in the first half, with the Jaecoo 7 the third best-selling vehicle overall at 23,840 units, up 184%.CHERY TO LAUNCH IN GERMANY IN 2027 WITHOUT AN EVChery is establishing its German headquarters at Frankfurt's Gateway Gardens and will launch the Chery brand in the first half of 2027 with four Tiggo SUVs, all hybrids or plug-in hybrids and no battery-electric model, despite EVs being Germany's fastest-growing powertrain. An electric Chery Q, compared with the Renault 5 E-Tech, will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October, as the group targets 30 dealers at launch and 100 by the end of 2027.HYUNDAI AND GENESIS DRIVERS GET IONNA CHARGING AT $0.31/KWHFrom 20 August, Hyundai and Genesis EV owners in the US can stack two 10% discounts on Ionna's $0.39/kWh base rate, cutting it to $0.31/kWh, with one discount expiring 30 September and the other continuing indefinitely. Sessions must be started through the car maker's app or Plug & Charge rather than the on-site card reader, and eligible models include the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 9, Kona Electric, GV60 and Electrified GV70, but not the recently discontinued Ioniq 6.HYUNDAI AND KIA PARTNER WITH KALUZA ON SMART CHARGINGHyundai Motor Group has partnered with Kaluza to build smart charging into Hyundai and Kia EVs from August 2026, integrating with the Kia and myHyundai apps so drivers can set a ready-by time and charge on cheaper, cleaner power, launching in the UK first and then Australia. Vehicle-to-grid services are due from 2027, adding to Kaluza's existing work with Stellantis, Volvo, Volkswagen, Porsche and Mitsubishi Motors.DUTCH INSURER UNIVÉ RESTRICTS COVER FOR 14 CAR BRANDSUnivé, a Dutch insurer with over 1.8 million members, has restricted or excluded 14 car brands based on parts availability, repair information and access to qualified workshops, limiting Dongfeng, Lucid, Firefly, Nio and Zeekr to third-party liability and fully excluding Hongqi, Changan, Voyah, KGM, Leapmotor, VinFast, Jaecoo, MHero and Omoda. The brands took 3.6% of July's Dutch registrations, up from 1.0% a year earlier, and dealers call the warning heavily overblown, with Chery saying it holds more than 30,000 parts at Schiphol-Rijk.

ev.news Briefly: UK Record, Jeep, PHEV Lies & more | 04 Sep 2026
It's ev.news Briefly for Friday 04 September 2026, only todays headlines and nothing else, in just 4 minutes if you haven't got time for the full show.Patreon supporters fund this show, get the episodes ad free, as soon as they're ready and are part of the ev.news Community. You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsBEVS BECOME UKS LEADING POWER SOURCE DESPITE INDUSTRY PUSHBACKBattery electric vehicles took 30% of the UK car market in August, up from 23% a year earlier, making BEVs the largest single powertrain category ahead of hybrids at 29%, petrol at 22% and PHEVs at 14%, with plug-ins combined reaching 44%. The performance is comfortably ahead of the effective 24.6% target New AutoMotive calculates for this year, yet the government has opened a consultation on relaxing its EV rules under carmaker pressure — a move that could backfire, given Chinese manufacturers now hold 28% of Europe's PHEV segment, up 60% year on year, with PHEVs making up 60% of BYD's European registrations.STELLANTIS SETS NOVEMBER JEEP, MID-APRIL RAM PRODUCTIONA supplier memo reviewed by Automotive News schedules electrified Jeep Grand Wagoneer production for November, six months later than the planned May start, and Ram 1500 REV production for mid-April, a nine-month slip from mid-2026 for a pickup originally due in 2025 as the Ramcharger. Stellantis maintains both extended-range models are on track — Jeep this year, Ram in 2027 — with the Grand Wagoneer built in Warren, Michigan alongside its petrol version and the Ram at Sterling Heights, delays that two supplier executives attribute to ensuring smooth launches.PHEVS EMIT 4.6 TIMES OFFICIAL CO₂ VALUESPlug-in hybrids registered in 2023 emitted 4.6 times their official CO₂ values in real-world driving, up from 3.5 times for 2021 registrations, according to an International Council on Clean Transportation study of nearly 920,000 vehicles that found longer electric range has coincided with less actual electric driving. The ICCT blames the EU utility factor formula, which assumes an 80% electric-driving share against a real-world figure of around 21% in 2022, with author Jan Dornoff arguing the rarely-achieved official values give PHEVs an unjustified advantage over combustion cars in manufacturers' CO₂ compliance.FORD AIMS FOR 100,000 FATHOM SALESFord has set an internal target of 100,000 first-year sales for its Fathom electric truck, according to WSJ sources, a figure no non-Tesla EV model has ever reached in the United States. Production is expected to begin in Q1 2027 with a starting price just under $30,000, which would place the Fathom third among US single models if rivals' volumes hold steady.BEVS OUTSELL PETROL AND DIESEL IN AUSTRALIABattery-electric vehicles outsold both petrol and diesel in Australia in August, hitting 27,078 units and 24.9% of a new-car market that grew 4.9% to 108,760 vehicles, against 25,824 petrol and 23,608 diesel cars, with BEV sales up 171% year on year. BEVs, hybrids and PHEVs together took 51.8% of sales, leaving combustion-only cars in the minority for the first time, and all eight best-selling EVs were China-built, including Tesla's Shanghai-produced Model Y and Model 3, the BYD Sealion 7 at 2,213 units and sixth overall, and the Geely EX5, up more than 385%.BATTERY TRUCKS PROJECTED TO BEAT DIESEL COSTSBattery-electric trucks are projected to undercut diesel on total cost of ownership across 70 to 90% of kilometres travelled in German heavy-duty freight by 2030, but that falls to a medium-scenario lower bound of 21 to 25% of economically feasible activities once daily range limits and charging availability are factored in. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research study in Nature, combining cost forecasts with real-world use profiles from four million European trucks, finds small-battery electric trucks competitive on 91% of freight activity by 2030 versus 69% for large-battery variants, with drivetrain efficiency, energy costs, battery size and usage intensity driving the outcome.MAN PARTNERS PLAN AROUND €400M FOR EUROPEAN SERVICE SITESMAN dealers, service partners and importers plan to invest around €400m (about $464m) in European service locations, on top of MAN's own €300m (about $348m) network investment by 2030, with board member Friedrich Baumann calling the combined scale unprecedented in company history despite ongoing cost cuts and job reductions. Roughly a third of the partners' spending goes to electromobility and digitalisation, including high-voltage staff training, battery repair centres and public charging at MAN branches, while a separate E.On partnership announced in 2024 targets up to 400 charging points at up to 170 European locations, up to 125 of them in Germany.WAYVE AND UBER OFFER LONDON AUTONOMOUS RIDESWayve and Uber have launched supervised autonomous rides through the Uber app across London's entire urban area excluding airports, using battery-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles running Wayve's AI Driver with cameras and environmental sensors, each carrying a TfL-licensed safety driver who can intervene. UberX, Uber Electric and Uber Comfort passengers may be offered a Wayve ride at no extra cost before their trip, with London the first of twelve planned markets and a Tokyo service using the Nissan Leaf and Nvidia Drive Hyperion due later this year, though no date has been given for removing the safety driver.BARCELONA OFFERS FOUR MILLION EUROS ELECTRIC BIKE SUBSIDIESBarcelona is launching four million euros of electric bike subsidies running from 2027 to 2030, with the first call scheduled for publication in 2027, offering up to 400 euros (about $465) for pedal-assisted city bikes and up to 800 euros (about $929) for freight bikes, capped at 40% of the pre-VAT cost. Registered city residents and companies with premises in Barcelona will be eligible, with the scheme intended to extend cycling distances and open up the city's sloped areas, though the subsidy rules still require approval.XIAOMI SIGNS EIGHT GERMAN DEALER ARRANGEMENTSXiaomi has signed agreements or letters of intent with eight German dealership groups, including Emil Frey, Penske Automotive and the Lueg Group, ahead of a planned 2027 European launch that will add another Chinese entrant to an already competitive German market. The company, which has sold roughly 700,000 SU7 sedans and YU7 SUVs in China since March 2024 according to President William Lu, is raising its profile at Berlin's IFA show from Sept. 4 to 8 with around 380 products, promoting a "Human x Car x Home" ecosystem linking more than 1,000 devices to the car, though it has not said which models Europe will get.

ev.news Tech: When It Comes To Battery Health, High Mileage Is Not A Scary Number
Buying a used EV still comes with one major concern: what condition is the battery actually in?A major new dataset from Austrian battery diagnostics company AVILOO, covering more than 500,000 battery-health tests across 20 popular EV models, suggests the picture is considerably better than many buyers might expect.Even at 150,000 kilometres, median usable battery capacity across the models studied remained at roughly 87–94%.But averages only tell part of the story.Individual cars of the same model, age and mileage can have substantially different battery health, making traditional measures such as mileage a surprisingly poor guide to the condition of a used EV.In this episode of ev.news Tech, I speak with Nathan Gore-Brown from TestEV, AVILOO’s distributor in Australia and New Zealand, about what actually determines EV battery ageing and how buyers can protect themselves.TestEV is a Premium Partner of ev.news but this is not a paid promotion. I genuinely wanted to get Nathan's view on this as an insider. The central conclusion is not a simplistic one: high mileage doesn't automatically mean a worn-out EV battery. Most batteries in this dataset appear to be ageing relatively slowly, but individual condition matters far more than the odometer alone. For anyone buying a used electric car, an independent battery-health test may therefore be one of the most useful checks to make before money changes hands.

Rear Motor versions offer 200kW and up to 630km WLTP range while Dual Motor models produce 400kW and up to 600km, both using a 100kWh battery charging at up to 200kW DC for a roughly 30-minute 10-80% top-up, priced from €57,900 in Germany and £54,750 in the UK with first deliveries planned for Q4 2026 and Canada to follow Europe.SCOUT REVEALS TWO TRAVELER CONCEPTSScout Motors has revealed the Mountainside and Trail-ready concepts based on its Traveler electric SUV, debuting at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Experience, with the rugged Trail-ready wearing Galvanized Steel paint, a Canvas roof, full-metal bumpers, elevated roof rack with trail lights, front winch, 18-inch beadlock wheels, 35-inch off-road tyres and a brick-red leather Denim District interior, while the refined Mountainside uses Morning Dusk charcoal-brown paint with gold flakes, 22-inch dish wheels, light-brown leather, grey fabric and recycled walnut trim. Scout has not confirmed whether either will be sold as a package or which features are optional; Traveler production starts next year with deliveries from 2028, and the range-extended Harvester, using a four-cylinder generator and 63kWh LFP pack for a claimed 500 miles, launches before the battery-electric version.FRANCE BEV SHARE RISES TO 38% IN AUGUSTBattery-electric vehicles took 38% of France's new-car market in August 2026, up from 35% in July, with registrations climbing 113% year on year to 36,159 units according to the CCFA. Chinese brands took 7,070 registrations or 7.5% of the market, led by BYD on 2,195, MG on 2,003 and Jaecoo on 1,987, but were outsold by Renault alone on 13,128, ahead of Peugeot on 11,716 and Tesla on 5,038, of which 4,622 were the Model Y, France's best-selling BEV.MOST USED EVS RETAIN ABOUT 90% CAPACITY AT 150,000KMAn Aviloo study of more than 500,000 battery-health tests across 20 popular models in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia between 2022 and 2026 found most used EVs retained about 90% of usable battery capacity at 150,000km, with median state-of-health scores ranging from 87% to 94%, led at that mileage by the Mercedes-Benz EQA at 93.97% and Hyundai Ioniq 5 at 93.79%, and trailed by the Nissan Leaf at 86.67%, Mini Cooper SE at 87.11% and Renault Zoe at 87.33%. Chinese models were excluded for lack of data, air-cooled and smaller batteries such as the Zoe and Leaf degraded faster, the Leaf ZE1 showed a 13.5-percentage-point spread between individual cars, and with warranties typically covering eight years or 160,000km and requiring replacement below 70%, the findings strengthen calls for mandatory battery-health certification since identical age and mileage can mask very different treatment.KIA OPENS CANADIAN ORDERS FOR 2027 EV4 GTKia has opened factory orders for the 2027 EV4 GT at certified Canadian dealerships from CA$58,595, its third "affordable" EV to get GT treatment, replacing the standard car's front-wheel drive with a 288-horsepower dual-motor all-wheel-drive system paired to an 81.4kWh battery for an estimated 431km of range. The GT adds GT-exclusive neon-accented brake calipers, 20-inch alloys, suede and synthetic-leather seats, a GT instrument cluster and a steering-wheel GT boost button, sitting above the standard EV4 that launched in Canada in late 2025 from CA$38,995 as what Kia called the country's most affordable EV.HONDA SEEKS 1.5 TRILLION YEN IN SAVINGSHonda is seeking 1.5 trillion yen ($9.4 billion) in savings by 2030 to improve its car business, expecting cumulative EV-related losses to exceed $12 billion and shifting towards hybrids while under pressure from Chinese manufacturers including BYD, which are taking share in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Europe on software, battery technology and the industry's lowest prices. Honda briefed major suppliers on the plan in spring and, according to internal documents, is targeting a 30% cost reduction in pressed and forged components, electrical parts and software-defined-vehicle parts, with individual targets issued to suppliers afterwards.MNDOT OFFERS $41.2 MILLION FOR UP TO 40 SITESMnDOT is offering $41.2 million in its third and largest NEVI round for fast-charging sites across Greater Minnesota, expecting to award up to 40 locations across 74 eligible areas with no more than one station funded in each, now able to go beyond I-35, I-90 and I-94 after the federal government certified those routes as fully built-out corridors. Funded sites must provide at least four NACS and four CCS1 connectors delivering a minimum 150kW per port with all ports in simultaneous use, be open during the host business's hours, and include an ADA-compliant charging space, adequate lighting, security cameras or staff, and snow removal within two hours of storms exceeding an inch — even though most earlier interstate sites have yet to open.TESLA US SALES DROP 26% IN AUGUSTMotor Intelligence estimated Tesla sold 40,816 vehicles in the United States in August 2026, down 26% from 55,500 a year earlier and its largest year-over-year monthly decline of 2026, with demand appearing to stabilise around 40,000 units a month, below the 47,000 monthly average of the first half of 2025 and below tax-credit-inflated third-quarter volumes. Ending Model S and Model X production, extending Model Y and Model 3 offers, starting Model Y L deliveries, expanding a certified pre-owned programme from $20,600 and fully claiming California's MyFirstEV allocation within days did not materially change the trajectory.VOLVO GLOBAL SALES FALL 7.4% FROM JUNE THROUGH AUGUSTVolvo Cars sold 148,239 vehicles globally from June through August, down 7.4% year over year despite a 13% rise in electrified sales — fully electric up 27%, plug-in hybrids down 1% — which made up 53.5% of global volume, with the decline blamed on China's continuing downturn and weaker US demand for electrified models. The company expects a significantly stronger second half as EX60 deliveries ramp up from Gothenburg production that began in spring at around $60,000 in the US, alongside European growth and continued US recovery, while shifting more output stateside to cut tariff exposure with XC60 production starting in South Carolina later this year and global Polestar 3 production consolidated there.XPENG TAKES UK COMMERCIAL CONTROLXpeng is establishing its own UK national sales company, taking ownership of its UK operations and responsibility for strategic and commercial development while retaining International Motors — the Subaru and Isuzu importer that originally handled its UK shipping and retail — as a provider of operational infrastructure and local distribution expertise. Having entered the UK last year with the G6, delivering 1,800 units through 48 dealers in England, Wales and Scotland, Xpeng plans to add the X9 MPV as an ID Buzz rival and the L03 coupé-crossover, sold as Mona in China, though no UK launch date or pricing has been announced and an entry price below £40,000 would pitch it against the Skoda Enyaq and Ford Explorer.35% OF SCREEN-EQUIPPED OWNERS NEVER USE THEMJD Power's 2026 U.S. Tech Experience Index study, surveying 68,084 owners of vehicles with passenger screens, found 35% had never used the screen and only 6% used it every drive, even as the feature spreads through new vehicles. Smart ignition, climate control and driver-preference settings scored highest for satisfaction with the fewest problems while added complexity in driver-assistance features lowered scores, suggesting owners prefer predictable technology and that a screen — a cheap, simple way to make a plain dashboard look advanced, useful for passenger HVAC control or films on long trips — improves appearance rather than the ownership experience.

You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsJLR LAUNCHES ELECTRIC RANGE ROVER FROM £154kLand Rover's first fully electric Range Rover arrives next year from £154,070 (about $208,473), using a 120kWh battery and two motors producing 542bhp, with a WLTP range of 372 miles and claimed real-world range of 330 miles. Built on the MLA-Flex architecture designed from the outset for battery power, it weighs around 2885kg but sits 88mm lower in centre of gravity than the V8, retains 900mm wading depth (960mm practical), and tows 2500kg versus 3500kg for the combustion model, with JLR's analysis of 360 million customer journeys concluding it suits 97% of them.NORWAY ELECTRIC CARS REACH NEW RECORDBattery-electric cars took a record 98.7% of Norway's 13,451 new passenger-car registrations in August, up from 96.9% a year earlier and 97.6% in July, according to the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council. Volkswagen led brands and the ID.4 led models ahead of the Toyota bZ4X and BMW iX3, while Xpeng and BYD together took 11.4% of the market against 4.9% in August 2025.VOLVO EX30 GAINS V2L IN SOFTWARE UPDATEVolvo has added vehicle-to-load charging to the EX30 via an over-the-air update, delivering up to 3kW at 16 amps through a separate adapter connected to the charge port, with supply cutting off automatically below 20% battery. The feature will not be offered in the US, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan or Japan, and arrives alongside a customisable contextual bar, redesigned settings menu and Plug & Charge in some European markets for model-year 2026 cars onwards.RENAULT SCENIC LONG RANGE REACHES 399 MILESThe Renault Scenic Long Range now covers up to 399 miles, a 20-mile gain from an extra 2kWh of capacity, and though peak charging stays at 150kW it holds that rate longer, cutting 10% to 80% charging to 28 minutes from 38. A revised Comfort Range version, possibly not returning to the UK, switches to LFP chemistry with 7kWh more capacity, 290 miles of range and 165kW charging, both paired with the existing 215bhp rear motor.GENESIS PLANS FOUR MORE EUROPEAN MARKETSGenesis will start selling in Austria, Denmark, Poland and Portugal next year despite a 19% fall in European sales, relying on expansion and electrification to fix weak regional performance. Its range is now almost entirely electric, with battery-electric vehicles making up 95% of European sales through July led by the GV60 and GV70, far above the 27% BEV share of the wider European premium market.FORD SHOWS FATHOM PICKUP IN DESERT TESTINGFord chief executive Jim Farley posted footage on September 1, 2026 of the Fathom electric midsize pickup undergoing hot-weather desert testing, revealing the name via a QR code on the camouflage that links to a Ford landing page. Production begins at Louisville Assembly in Q1 2027 ahead of an early 2027 sale date, with Ford claiming more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4 but withholding full specifications.CHINA ISSUES OVERSEAS GUIDELINES FOR CHINESE AUTOMAKERSChinese regulators issued guidelines on September 1 for automakers' overseas operations, telling them to price with reference to costs and market conditions rather than to gain unfair competitive advantage, avoid frequent or substantial price changes, and refrain from misleading advertising. The rules also demand stronger anti-monopoly, anti-corruption, antitrust and social-responsibility compliance, protection of Chinese brand reputation abroad, adherence to local labour laws and better management of political, economic and safety risks in host countries.CANADA RELEASES 24,500 CHINA-MADE ELECTRIFIED-VEHICLE PERMITSCanada released 24,500 further permits for China-made electrified vehicles on September 1, completing the 49,000 first-year quota introduced in January under a trade deal with Beijing that replaced a 100% tariff, though imports still face the standard 6.1% most-favoured-nation rate. Global Affairs Canada issued permits for 15,344 EVs and 259 hybrids in the first six months, leaving importers able to bring in 33,397 vehicles including 8,897 carried-over permits, as BYD, Chery and Geely pursue certification, hiring and dealers ahead of expected sales by early next year.BMW IX3 CROSSES PORTUGAL ON ONE CHARGEA 2026 BMW iX3 50 xDrive drove 739km (459 miles) the length of Portugal on National Road 2 without recharging, finishing with 20% battery left after three days and 14 hours at the wheel with BMW Portugal ambassador Ana Varela driving. The route mixed mountains, winding roads, valleys, plains and towns rather than maximising range, and falls short of a December 2025 run of 1,007.7km from BMW's Debrecen plant to Munich that ended on 2%.US ADDS RECORD STORAGE CAPACITY IN SECOND QUARTERThe US installed a record 20.2 gigawatt-hours of energy storage in the three months to June, with a Solar Energy Industries Association and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence outlook forecasting 71 gigawatt-hours added across 2026. More than 74% of second-quarter capacity was built in states Donald Trump won in 2024, driven largely by Arizona, Texas and Utah, with growth partly tied to data centres using batteries to handle rapid demand swings from artificial intelligence.SOLAR PANELS COOL HYPOTHETICAL TOMATO FARMA simulation found tomato leaves under solar panels ran 1.84°C cooler through the day and up to 7.56°C cooler at peak afternoon heat than in open field, receiving 47% less sunlight but losing only 31% of carbon uptake. Panels above crops were 5.6°C cooler than those over bare soil, recovering about 15% of the efficiency lost to heat, while perceived temperatures for workers fell 4.46°C, and the model could be applied to other climate and crop combinations.

Tiguan next month as the replacement for the ID.4 and ID.5, abandoning its numbered naming scheme in favour of established petrol nameplates alongside the ID.3 Neo, ID. Polo and ID. Cross. Prototype footage published by Autogefühl shows a wider, more conventional body closer to the petrol Tiguan with pop-out door handles replacing flush units, and the car is expected to use the MEB+ platform with a new cabin design, updated infotainment and the return of physical climate buttons.SLATE REPORTEDLY PLANS $3,000 CARGO TOPPER FOR ALL BUYERSSlate Auto reportedly plans a cargo topper kit available to all buyers rather than fleet customers alone, offered in standard square-back and high-roof forms in white and black from around $3,000, according to the Instagram account Slate Auto Mods citing fleet and government sales lead Christian Kreipke. Kreipke also reportedly said the next-generation Slate will retain the same basic design dimensions, an assurance that costs the company nothing but protects the aftermarket upfitters whose tooling depends on that consistency.CALIFORNIA SENDS 1,200-WATT PLUG-IN SOLAR BILL TO NEWSOMSB 868, passed with bipartisan support and now awaiting Governor Newsom's signature, would legalise plug-in or balcony solar in California by replacing the interconnection application with a free online registration, opening the $300-to-$2,200 technology to renters and those unable to install rooftop arrays. Systems would be capped at 1,200 watts per home and must plug into a standard outlet, offset onsite use, meet electrical codes, carry independent safety certification and stop feeding the grid during outages; PG&E ultimately opposed the final version over unenforced certification rules until 2030, San Diego Gas & Electric warned the anti-backfeed feature could fail, and Southern California Edison went neutral after safety standards were tightened.KIA SETS SEPTEMBER UNVEILING FOR PV7 ELECTRIC VANKia will fully unveil the PV7 electric van at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover on 14 September ahead of a 2027 customer launch, releasing images of Cargo and Passenger versions but withholding payload, cargo volume and range figures that matter most to fleet buyers. Built on the 400-volt E-GMP.S skateboard architecture shared with the PV5, its length is reported in Korea at between 5,270mm and 5,900mm despite Kia UK calling it mid-size, and it follows a PV5 that took 37% of Europe's electric C-segment van market in the first half of the year.OREGON EV REBATE MONEY EXPECTED TO RUN OUT IN TWO MONTHSOregon's electric-vehicle rebate programme has about $8.5 million remaining and is expected to last little more than two months, having already been suspended once by the Department of Environmental Quality after a previous scheme lasted three and a half months. The standard rebate has no income test and pays $2,000 for a new EV, $1,500 for a plug-in hybrid and $375 for an electric motorcycle, while the income-targeted charge-ahead rebate pays $7,500 for a new EV, $5,000 for a new plug-in hybrid, up to $4,000 for a used EV and up to $2,500 for a used plug-in hybrid.BYD REVEALS MAKO PLUG-IN HYBRID UTE IN BRAZILBYD has shown pre-production Mako plug-in hybrid utes to Brazilian media at Interlagos ahead of an October or November launch, positioning the roughly 4.8-metre, monocoque-based model as a smaller, more car-like alternative to the ladder-frame Shark 6 and a rival to the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz rather than one-tonne utes. It retains a separate load bed of about 1,000 litres with a reported 750kg payload and uses a flex-fuel DM-i system running petrol or ethanol, with front-wheel drive at launch, an all-wheel-drive version reportedly in development, and battery capacity, electric range and right-hand-drive export plans all unconfirmed.QUEENSLAND SETS AGE 16 AND LICENCE RULESQueensland introduced tougher e-bike and e-scooter rules on 31 August 2026 requiring riders to be at least 16 and hold at least a learner licence, with parents liable for fines when under-16s are caught riding illegally. Interstate and international licences are accepted while suspended or disqualified drivers are barred entirely, and exemptions apply to 12-to-17-year-olds riding with a parent and to people unable to hold a licence because of certain medical conditions or disabilities.NISSAN AND HONDA SIGN ECU SOFTWARE PARTNERSHIPNissan and Honda signed an agreement on 31 August to jointly develop standardised electronic control units, an in-vehicle operating system, middleware and vehicle-control software for what they call software-defined vehicles. The resulting electronic architecture is scheduled to reach next-generation vehicles in 2029, with both companies claiming faster development cycles, more efficient investment and improved competitiveness in an intensifying global market.CHINA PROPOSES 30,000 KILOMETERS OF ROAD TESTINGChina is proposing to double mandatory road testing for new-energy vehicles to 30,000 kilometres, according to Bloomberg, even as carmakers push for shorter development schedules that IAT Automobile Technology and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers estimate AI could compress to an 18-month standard, against a current pace of around two years and three to five years for established foreign rivals. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is monitoring online customer complaints and inspected at least five leading automakers in July, including GAC Aion days after reports that batteries in some models were failing beyond 150,000 kilometres.POLAND'S COAL SHARE FALLS TO 52.7% IN 2025Poland's coal share of electricity generation fell from 72.5% in 2021 to 52.7% in 2025, dropping below half in five separate months and being outproduced by renewables across a full month for the first time in June. The country generated 24.4 TWh from gas, 23.8 TWh from onshore wind and 20.3 TWh from solar in 2025, and the IEA expects renewables to overtake coal on an annual basis in 2028.

Standard kit includes the Interior Style and Comfort Packages plus the PowerSocket vehicle-to-load adapter, which delivers 2 kW continuous and 3.6 kW peak power, while California Mode keeps USB ports live and air conditioning running at sleeping temperature for up to 48 hours depending on charge and outside conditions.MERCEDES-AMG CLA 45 IS A DIFFERENT BEASTThe electric Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 saloon is on sale in the UK at £66,750 (about $90,660), matching the outgoing petrol car's price and undercutting the plug-in hybrid C63 by £34,000 for comparable output, with the Shooting Brake £1000 more and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N its nearest rival at £65,800. Three Yasa axial-flux motors produce 671bhp for a 3.0sec 0-62mph time in the 2.3-tonne saloon, with claimed ranges of 416 and 398 miles, 330kW charging giving 10-80% in 22 minutes, a rear-axle drift mode, and deliveries starting next year.51% OF U.S. CONSUMERS WOULD CONSIDER A CHINA-MADE VEHICLEA Dave Cantin Group market outlook report found 51% of U.S. consumers would consider a China-made vehicle despite Chinese brands not being sold there, with willingness at 77% among under-35s versus 36% among those 55 and older, driven by affordability as average transaction prices sit near $50,000 and monthly payments run far above five-year-ago levels. Chinese brands have taken roughly 10% share in Europe and Mexico in under five years, a pace that took Japanese and Korean makers nearly two decades, and the resulting collapse in established automakers' China business, combined with the EV unwind and tariffs, is already reshaping product and production decisions with direct consequences for U.S. dealers.ELECTRIFIED MODELS FILL JULY'S FASTEST-SELLING USED-CAR TOP 10For the first time since Autotrader UK began tracking the data, no petrol or diesel model appeared in July's 10 fastest-selling used cars, with eight BEVs and two hybrids from MG and Toyota filling the list, led by the hybrid MG ZS at 13 days, the Kia Niro at 15 and the Tesla Model 3 at 17. A year earlier BEVs held only four of the ten places, and July's slowest-selling used models were entirely petrol and diesel, with no BEV among them.TERRA CHARGE PLANS 2,500 NACS POINTS IN JAPANJapan's Terra Charge will begin adding NACS charging from 2028 at commercial sites, major transport routes and hotels, targeting 2,500 points by the end of 2033 and studying a NACS-based AC charger for hotels and apartment blocks, though no specifications or timeline have been disclosed. The move responds partly to Tesla driver demand reported by Nikkei Asia, but with only 1,323 registered NACS points against roughly 68,000 charging points nationally, most on CHAdeMO, and a government goal of 300,000 points by 2030, NACS will add connector variety rather than displace the incumbent standard.DCBEL PLATFORM ADOPTED IN THREE V2X PILOTSDcbel's bidirectional charging platform has been selected for three V2X pilots — California's REDWDS scheme, a PG&E programme and a MassCEC demonstration — offering drivers and fleets equipment funding, lower bills and payments of up to $3,200 per vehicle per year for exporting energy to the grid. The economics depend on vehicle-to-grid export, yet customers have so far opted for vehicle-to-home installations, dcbel had shipped nothing under the programmes at the time of reporting, and most jurisdictions still prohibit grid export altogether.KGM RAISES MUSSO EV AWD TOWING RATINGKGM has lifted the all-wheel-drive Musso EV dual-cab ute's braked towing rating from 1,800kg to 2,300kg, exceeding the 2,000kg rating of Toyota's AWD electric Hilux. The revision undercuts the claim made by former prime minister Scott Morrison during the 2019 Australian election that EVs could not tow a trailer or boat to a camping spot, an argument that became part of the climate culture war, though what any BEV can tow still rests on the rating its manufacturer assigns.PSW WINS ESTONIA FERRY MCS CONTRACTNorway's PSW Power & Automation will equip Estonia's Virtsu–Kuivastu route with a Megawatt Charging System of two charging points at each end, each rated up to 5 MW on a 1,500-volt architecture, to recharge the country's new battery-electric ferry during port stops before its scheduled completion by the end of 2028. The ferry will carry 380 passengers and either 110 cars or eight lorries, making it smaller than the incumbent Piret and Toll, while the charging system will also be open to other compatible vessels, drawing on PSW's Nordic record of more than 250 MW of shore power and over 100 MWh of battery storage.WAYMO SAYS L2 IS INSUFFICIENT FOR L4Waymo has published 10 AI lessons drawn from over 200 million fully autonomous miles, arguing that incrementally improving a Level 2 driver-assistance system is a "false summit" that cannot safely reach Level 4, because neither billions of simulated miles nor millions of supervised miles replicate operating without a human backup. The company, which runs more than 500,000 paid driverless rides a week and targets a million by year-end, uses camera, lidar and radar redundancy and warns against black-box end-to-end networks, in contrast to Tesla's camera-only Tesla Vision, its end-to-end Full Self-Driving versions 14 and 15, and an Austin robotaxi service that has logged 380,000 unsupervised miles.

ev.news Briefly: Hyundai, Omoda, Volvo & more | 27 Aug 2026

CEO José Muñoz said Europe is one of the most competitive regions on the planet and that every EV credit protects the ICE and hybrid business, while the claimed 30% battery-cost reduction is a planned saving on 2027 models using mid-nickel NCM cells rather than an achieved one.HYUNDAI CLAIMS MORE THAN 600 MILES FOR SANTA FE EREVHyundai's first range-extender EV, the Santa Fe EREV, is due in North America in the first half of 2027 with a claimed 600-plus miles of total range from a battery less than half the size of a comparable EV's, using electric motors for drive and an engine solely as a generator. Production begins in Alabama in early 2027, with Hyundai expecting EREVs to matter more in North America than in Europe, and an Ioniq V EREV planned for China plus a Genesis EREV in early 2027.HYUNDAI PLANS INTERMEDIATE N PERFORMANCE TIERHyundai is creating an unnamed performance tier between N Line trims and full N models, using N powertrains but at lower cost and better suited to daily driving. It sees the high-volume middle ground as a sales opportunity that could also free the flagship N cars, such as the Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N, to become more track-focused, though no technical details have been disclosed.HYUNDAI SELECTS KALUZA FOR SMART CHARGINGHyundai has named London-based Kaluza its global partner for EV smart charging and vehicle-to-grid services, starting with Hyundai and Kia in the UK and expanding to Australia, with OVO becoming the first UK retailer to offer smart charging through the Kia App. The deal sits within Hyundai Motor Group's AllDayEnergy programme launched in July, expanding existing pilots in Jeju, the US and the Netherlands, with V2G services planned for next year.OMODA 4 SET FOR BARCELONA ESPORTS DEBUTChery brand Omoda will launch its 4.4-metre Omoda 4 compact crossover in Europe at the Valorant Champions Tour EMEA finals in Barcelona from 28 to 30 August, targeting younger technology-oriented buyers, before an Italian debut at the Turin show on 11 September. Europe accounts for more than 40 percent of Omoda and Jaecoo's global sales, and Chery, Europe's second bestselling Chinese automaker in July behind BYD, opened its first European hub and R&D centre in Barcelona in April.VOLVO ADDS SHARED ANIMAL HAZARD ALERTSA Volvo software update lets EX60, EX90 and ES90 cars use sensors and cameras to detect large animals such as deer and sheep, upload the location to the cloud and warn approaching vehicles, including those on the European Data for Road Safety programme, with added alerts for pedestrians, cyclists, roadworks and accidents ahead. Safety chief Åsa Haglund said the newer models' computing power makes this possible but that warnings must be trustworthy, since false positives deteriorate trust in driver-assistance systems.VOLTPOST ADDS CEILING AND SURFACE EV CHARGERSVoltpost has extended its Voltpost Air range beyond lamppost retrofits with ceiling-mounted chargers that lower retractable cables in parking garages and surface-mounted units for walls, pedestals and kerbside sites without poles. It claims installations take hours rather than days and can cut costs by up to 70%, though it has told Massachusetts regulators each charger needs 40A and dual-port units 80A, with some sites requiring power upgrades or a new meter.PLUG-IN SOLAR PANELS LEGALISED ACROSS GREAT BRITAINPlug-in solar panels became legal to buy and use across Great Britain on 27 August, with kits generating up to 800W, meeting up to 20% of a home's electricity use and saving up to £110 a year, after independent safety testing found compliant panels safe under a specification stricter than Germany's. Complete kits are expected to cost around £400–£600 initially and will be stocked by Amazon, Argos, Currys, B&Q, Screwfix and Wickes, with government assuming 15% of households pay for mounting help and 20% need minor electrical work.NIO CERTIFIED USED EVS START AT 26,900 EUROSNio's cheapest certified used EV in Europe costs 26,900 euros without a battery, which buyers instead subscribe to under Battery as a Service at 169 euros a month for 75kWh or 289 euros for 100kWh in Germany and the Netherlands, adding close to 7,000 euros over the remaining warranty for the larger pack. All cars are 2023 or 2024 builds with roughly two years of warranty left, drawn from Nio's own fleet and given full technical, cosmetic and structural inspections, original-parts repairs and no scheduled servicing for six months or 10,000 kilometres.APTERA SECURES UP TO $44 MILLION INVESTMENTAptera Motors has secured a strategic investment of up to $44 million from Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology, or Launch Design, covering fixtures, tooling, testing and pilot production for its first 40 solar electric vehicles at its planned Carlsbad, California site. The company is targeting the start of production in Q4 2026, with first vehicle bodies and chassis expected in October 2026.VESSEV RAISES $A27 MILLION FOR HYDROFOIL PRODUCTIONAuckland-based Vessev has raised $US19 million in Series A and follow-on funding led by Blackbird Ventures to scale production of its electric hydrofoiling vessels, grow its market team and develop onboard software and telemetry. The 2017-founded firm, which launched the 40-nautical-mile VS-9 in 2024 and has since added the VS-12, has delivery agreements in Sydney, Perth and Tasmania and named FlyTahoe as its first US customer, though its first Perth VS-9s only arrive in early 2027 pending classification and regulatory approval.

You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsRENAULT 5 GAINS RANGE AND LFP ENTRY VERSIONRenault has updated the electric Renault 5, lifting the 40 kWh Urban Range to 315 km (196 miles) and the 52 kWh Comfort Range to 430 km (267 miles) from 410 km, crediting a lower ride height, redesigned mirrors and optimised battery electronics. In markets including France, the 70 kW/40 kWh version is replaced by an entry model pairing an 80 kW "Gen 2 Evo" motor from the Twingo E-Tech with a 36.5 kWh cell-to-pack LFP battery for up to 305 km (190 miles), 6.6 kW AC and 80 kW DC charging, with Google's Gemini assistant arriving over the air and the range shown at the Paris Motor Show from 12 to 18 October 2026.CHINESE AUTOMAKERS PLAN 1.5 MILLION EUROPEAN OUTPUT BY 2035Mobility Global forecasts Chinese brands will build about 90,000 vehicles in Europe this year, rising to 1 million by 2030 and 1.5 million by 2035, with roughly half of the 2030 output coming from Spain as BYD starts Hungarian production this autumn, Chery assembles Jaecoo and Omoda in Barcelona, Leapmotor uses Stellantis' Zaragoza plant, MG plans a Galicia plant for 2028 and Geely forms a Ford joint venture in Valencia (66% Ford, 34% Geely) operating from the first half of 2027. The push comes ahead of the EU's proposed Industrial Accelerator Act, which would attach "Made in EU" tests to public procurement, state support and CO₂ super-credits rather than impose a general local-content rule, while economists warn Europe risks becoming a final-assembly site without winning higher-value manufacturing and supply-chain jobs.FIAT 500E LEADS OWNERSHIP COST STUDYSelf, Inc. compared annual running costs for 50 new cars, excluding purchase price, finance and depreciation and assuming 15,000 miles a year, finding an average of $6,913 and placing the Fiat 500e first at $3,557, ahead of the Honda Civic Hybrid at $4,833. Hybrids averaged $5,734 a year against $6,189 for battery-electric and $7,025 for combustion cars, with the Dodge Charger Daytona the second-cheapest EV at $5,298 and the Lucid Air the priciest at $10,049, though the 500e's win has not translated into demand as Stellantis reported just 150 US sales in the first half of 2026, down 81% year on year.ICAUR V25 CONFIRMED FOR AUSTRALIA IN EARLY 2027Chery has confirmed the iCaur V25 will launch in Australia in early 2027 alongside the brand's arrival, with the larger V27 also expected in the initial line-up, and the 4636mm-long five-seater offering a 2820mm wheelbase, 197mm of ground clearance, a 200kg roof-load rating, fixed aluminium side steps, removable D-pillar panels and a side-hinged rear door with a 22.7-litre external storage box. It uses a range-extender drivetrain with a Chery 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 33.67kWh LFP battery giving up to 150km (93.2 miles) of electric range on WLTC, and rides on a unibody with MacPherson struts and rear five-link suspension rather than a ladder frame.KEMPOWER LINKS PLUG COUNT TO CHARGER USEKempower's analysis of North American public charging sites on its ChargEye software found plug count correlated with utilisation at 0.63 versus just 0.228 for total installed power, that distributed-charging sites averaged 83% higher utilisation than fixed-power dispensers, and that about 100 kW of available power per plug is the sweet spot when all connectors are in use. The paper does not disclose sample size, observation period, how utilisation was calculated or whether it controlled for location, traffic, age, pricing or reliability, it shows correlation rather than causation, it promotes an architecture Kempower already sells as its MORE Plugs system, and its 100 kW benchmark falls short of the NEVI rule requiring each port on an Alternative Fuel Corridor to deliver up to 150 kW simultaneously.US EV RENTERS FACE CHARGING COST PENALTYUS EV drivers in rented or multifamily homes can pay up to six times more to charge than those on standard residential electricity, a "renter's penalty" worsened because utility assistance programmes typically tie benefits to a household meter. A playbook from GRID Alternatives and the Smart Electric Power Alliance proposes driver-focused measures such as account-linked discounts or prepaid charging cards for income-qualified owners, combined with location-focused steps like reduced-price charging at utility-owned public stations and multifamily sites in priority communities.BYD ADDS CANADA 'COMING SOON' PAGEBYD has put a "Coming Soon" message on its Canadian website and listed eleven management vacancies, eight of them posted by BYD North America and based in Toronto or the wider Greater Toronto Area, covering head of sales, marketing, network development, infrastructure business development, operations planning, legal counsel and HR, with one sales role tasked with leading market entry, nationwide sales and a dealer network for passenger vehicles. No models, prices, dealers, ordering function or launch date have been published, and while Canada reopened to Chinese-made EVs on 1 March 2026 by replacing the 100% surtax with a 49,000-vehicle annual quota at a 6.1% tariff, shipment-specific permits and Transport Canada compliance still apply.GERMAN SUPPLIERS LOOK BEYOND CARS AS ELECTRIC VEHICLES RESHAPE INDUSTRYElectrification is redrawing the network of parts, skills and factories behind the car, illustrated by Nuremberg-area family firm Sembach, whose output of small automotive parts has fallen from about 600 million to 400 million a year and which set a 2023 target of cutting automotive revenue from 80 to 40 per cent by 2033. The VDA says around 100,000 German automotive jobs have gone since 2019 and another 125,000 could follow by 2035, with many replacement roles created abroad, while Bosch, on €91 billion of revenue last year, is pivoting to sensors, robotics, software-defined mobility and electrification even as it plans to cut more than 20,000 German automotive jobs by 2030.SOLENT ELECTRIC BOAT CHARGING NETWORK EXPANDSThe Electric Seaway, a £3.2m project backed by the Department for Transport's UK SHORE programme, has since 2023 built a chain of CCS DC fast-charging points along the south coast using 400V-class technology similar to car rapid chargers, though Aqua superPower COO Karen Gill says uptake has come mainly from commercial workboats rather than leisure yachts. Range remains the constraint for weekenders, with Grand Soleil's 33ft Blue claiming 30 nautical miles at 5 knots from its 6kW ePropulsion pod and 8kWh battery, or 60 with a second battery and a diesel option still offered, while Yamaha's 2024 acquisition of Torqeedo signals that the largest outboard manufacturer is taking electric marine propulsion seriously.

You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsWALMART OPENS 100TH FAST-CHARGING STATIONWalmart has opened its 100th branded EV fast-charging station at its Monument, Colorado Supercenter, extending a network that now covers 20 states — up from 17 a month earlier — despite the retailer having no branded chargers less than two years ago. The four-stall site uses ABB Mobility all-in-one dispensers delivering up to 400 kW with NACS and CCS1 connectors and app-only payment, part of a rollout that added 612 stalls in the first half of 2026 and ranked second only to Tesla for new ports energised in Q2, at an average $0.43 per kWh with 10% off for Walmart+ members.HYUNDAI OPENS IONIQ V PRE-SALES IN CHINABeijing Hyundai has begun pre-sales of the Ioniq V at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show ahead of a September launch, priced from 119,900 yuan (about $17,300) to 139,900 yuan across three versions, with up to 650 km of CLTC range, an 800-volt E-GMP architecture, CATL LFP batteries of 53.5 or 66.8 kWh and single motors of 140 or 168 kW. It is the first production Ioniq developed in China, using a 27-inch 4K Snapdragon 8295 screen, Momenta highway L2+ assistance and Baidu and ByteDance AI infotainment, as Hyundai targets 20 electrified models and 500,000 annual Chinese sales by 2030.POLESTAR CLAIMS UNEQUAL US TREATMENTPolestar has accused the US Commerce Department of "disparate treatment" after a June 24 denial blocked its American sales from model year 2027, noting that Volvo — which shares Chinese majority owner Geely and builds the Polestar 3 on the same South Carolina line — was authorised earlier in 2026. In an Aug. 18 letter, Peter Wexler said the 13-month review dismissed mitigation offers including audits, cybersecurity reviews and removal of China links from data management, despite officials indicating in January and April that approval was likely; dealers have called the outcome devastating, with a New Jersey group suing for $25 million over an allegedly concealed US withdrawal.DUTCH PLUG-IN MARKET FAVOURS RICH HOUSEHOLDSStatistics agency CBS found that the Netherlands' shift to electric cars has mainly benefited wealthy households, with the top-earning 10% buying almost 75,000 of the roughly 259,000 electric and plug-in hybrid cars traded in 2025 and the top 20% accounting for nearly half. The lowest-earning 10% bought about 6,000, or 2%, and two-thirds of cars bought by the poorest fifth were over a decade old, prompting a €52 million, three-year subsidy scheme from the final quarter of 2026 for lower- and middle-income buyers of second-hand EVs who scrap older petrol or diesel vehicles.MERCEDES CLA ELECTRIC COVERS 385 MILES AT 70 MPHThe dual-motor 2027 Mercedes-Benz CLA 350 4MATIC Electric covered 385 miles in a constant-speed 70 mph range test on 19-inch wheels, exceeding its 312-mile EPA Combined rating by 73 miles, or 23%, with 2 miles remaining at 0% charge. Consumption of 225 Wh per mile implied 86.6 kWh used against an 85-kWh net battery, with the result credited to the 800-volt Mercedes Modular Architecture and a two-speed rear-motor transmission of the type that has also helped Porsche and Audi models beat their ratings.OPEL SETS 2028 DATE FOR ELECTRIC CORSAOpel CEO Florian Huettl has pushed the all-electric Corsa successor from 2027 to 2028, moving the brand's best-seller onto Stellantis' STLA Small platform as a battery-electric-only model with bigger batteries, more range and prices from €25,000, against the current e-CMP Corsa Electric's 46-49 kWh battery, 429 km claim and €30,440 starting price. Huettl cited improving range, charging and fuel costs rather than any fixed date to end combustion engines, and Opel will still deliver the e-CMP-based Corsa GSE, capable of 0-100 kph in 5.5 seconds, to dealers this year.ROME BACKS ELECTRIC AND HYDROGEN BUSESRome will spend €117 million from Italy's infrastructure ministry on new buses through operator ATAC, split between €83.6 million for hydrogen models and €27.1 million for battery-electric ones plus depot upgrades, though neither quantities nor manufacturers have been named. A further €6 million in European funding will build a green hydrogen hub using local electrolysis at ATAC's Acilia site, complementing a charge introduced in July 2026 for EVs entering a restricted central zone that takes about 50,000 cars a day against a designed capacity of 20,000.SUZUKI PLANS VISION E-SKY EUROPE EXPORTSuzuki intends to export its Vision e-Sky electric microcar from Japan, with Europe possible in 2027 and the UK and Italy under review at an expected UK price below £20,000, ahead of a Japanese world premiere in autumn and production at a plant southwest of Tokyo. Based on Japan's kei-car class and targeting 310 km of range with likely LFP cells from BYD's corporate network, it would be Suzuki's first battery-electric kei car and reportedly the first exported almost unchanged, offering growth potential after European sales fell 15% to 187,000 in the year to March.MEXICO ELECTRIFIED SALES RISE AS PRODUCTION FALLSMexico sold 95,037 electrified vehicles in the first half of 2026, up 44% year on year for a 12.6% market share, led by Toyota in conventional hybrids and boosted by expanding Chinese brands, while charging points reached 60,934 and 170 electrified models are now offered. Production moved the other way, falling to 47,411 units from 110,002 a year earlier as weaker US demand cut Equinox output by 81.6% and Blazer output by 80%, prompting the Electro Mobility Association to call for policies supporting both electrification and domestic manufacturing.ELECTRIC MOTORHOME USES EVOLVE PLATFORMCityFreighter, Vöhringer and Motive Development have unveiled an electric motorhome demonstrator for Europe's 4.25-tonne Class B category, built on CityFreighter's Evolve skateboard with a Vöhringer AIRPLY lightweight interior and coming in under 3.5 tonnes complete with kitchen, bathroom and heat pump, leaving about 750 kg of payload. Its 128-kWh battery gives roughly 400 km of range, supports vehicle-to-load and charges from 10-80% in about 20 minutes at up to 200 kW, while independent battery replacement and upgrades are pitched as protecting residual value in vehicles that often stay in service for decades.

ev.news Briefly: U.S. Sales, BMW, Canada & more | 19 Aug 2026
It's ev.news Briefly for Wednesday 19 August 2026, only todays headlines and nothing else, in just 4 minutes if you haven't got time for the full show.Patreon supporters fund this show, get the episodes ad free, as soon as they're ready and are part of the ev.news Community. You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsU.S. EV SALES STABILISE AS USED DEMAND GROWSU.S. new EV sales hit an estimated 77,266 units in July, up 3.2% from June but 41.5% below July 2025, a drop distorted by last year's rush to beat the expiring federal tax credit, with EVs taking 5.6% of new-vehicle sales and Tesla holding roughly 55% on 42,435 sales. Used EV sales rose to 36,810 units, up 7.9% month over month and 10.1% year over year, while new EV inventory fell to 80 days, average new EV transaction prices reached $56,126 and used EV listings averaged $37,832.BMW CLAIMS ELECTRIC RANGE RECORDA BMW engineer drove a Neue Klasse iX3 1,030.2 km (640 miles) from Shenyang to Beijing on a single charge with five percent battery left, which BMW calls a record for its battery-electric models while stressing the extreme-range test does not reflect everyday driving. The car uses BMW's sixth-generation 800V battery system with high-nickel large cylindrical cells in a module-free cell-to-pack design, and reservations open at the Chengdu Auto Show on Aug. 21 as BMW's Chinese sales fall 20.4% year over year to 262,000 vehicles in the first half of 2026.CANADIAN ZEV SALES REBOUND IN JUNECanadian zero-emission vehicle sales reached 21,876 in June 2026, up 56.1 per cent year over year and taking 11.5 per cent of the market, the best month since December 2024 and part of a 7.3 per cent rise in overall sales that ended eight months of decline. The rebound followed the federal government's resumption of rebates in February 2026, offering up to $5,000 off a battery-electric vehicle and $2,500 off a plug-in hybrid, suggesting incentives still drive adoption.OCTOPUS LAUNCHES NORTH AMERICAN CHARGING APPOctopus Energy has launched Octopus Charge, a free iOS and Android app that lets drivers find, start and pay for public charging at 211,221 chargers across North America via 24 partner networks including ChargePoint, EVgo, Blink, bp pulse and Shell Recharge. The app offers filtering by speed, connector and network, live availability, pricing, an EV route planner and no markup on per-kWh costs, serving as the North American sibling to Octopus Electroverse.CHANGAN PREPARES AUSTRALIAN LAUNCH WITH AVATRChangan is recruiting for a factory-backed Australian operation covering both its mainstream Changan brand and its Huawei- and CATL-backed luxury brand Avatr, with a job advert referencing an "Avatr/Changan sales and service network" but no confirmed models, pricing or launch dates. The group, which sold 2.913 million vehicles globally in 2025, already has an Australian presence through Deepal and the Changan Mazda joint venture, and a right-hand-drive Avatr 07 was photographed testing in Melbourne earlier in 2026.BYD BUILDS MILAN DESIGN STUDIOBYD is building a Milan design studio led by Wolfgang Egger, formerly of Alfa Romeo, Audi and Lamborghini, to conduct European design research and tailor Denza and BYD models to local tastes, materials and fashion-house connections rather than imposing one global design. The move comes as BYD's share of the EU, EFTA and UK market more than doubled to 2.4% in the first half of 2026, matching Tesla's, while its Hungarian Szeged plant has slipped to full vehicle assembly in the fourth quarter of 2026.EINRIDE PLANS 500-TRUCK TESLA SEMI FLEETEinride will buy and deploy 500 Tesla Semis across California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois and Georgia over 24 months from September, the largest publicly announced Semi order and 35% bigger than WattEV's 370-truck deal, fully financed by third parties and serving Amazon and other customers on its Saga AI platform. The order roughly triples Einride's deployed electric fleet and supports a target of converting about $800 million in potential annual recurring revenue, though the company has not disclosed pricing, charging plans or phasing, and Tesla has yet to publish Semi production or delivery figures.HEART FLIES X1 ELECTRIC DEMONSTRATORHeart Aerospace flew its X1 demonstrator on August 12, 2026 at Plattsburgh International Airport, a 27-minute piloted flight to 1,100 feet in what it calls the largest battery-electric aircraft flown to date, weighing over 25,000 pounds, delivering more than one megawatt and using roughly $5 of electricity. X1 is a full-scale representative of the 30-seat hybrid-electric ES-30, targeted for FAA Part 25 certification and service entry in 2031 with flight testing from 2028, and backed by commitments from United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX.ETRUCKER ADDS HGV ROUTE AND FLEET TOOLSThe eTrucker app, founded by Tobias Wagner after driving over 200,000 km in electric HGVs, has added route-break planning using TomTom Truck Routes, fleet pairing via a simple code, charging-card recommendations, pricing categories and time buffers for trailer detachment. As of 1 July 2026 it listed nearly 700 HGV-compatible locations in Germany, split between 154 drive-through sites, 158 where detachment is recommended and 387 requiring it, with Aral Pulse, EnBW, Ionity and Shell Recharge the leading operators.

Paren data shows Ionna averages $0.37/kWh, the cheapest of 17 networks and about 40% below Tesla and Electrify America's $0.56, though home charging still dominates at more than 90% of sessions and $0.18/kWh.ZEEKR TO LAUNCH 8X AND 9X IN AUSTRALIAZeekr will add the 9X and 8X luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs to its all-electric Australian range from late 2026 into 2027, after passing 10,000 local sales in under two years. The three-row 8X targets the BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport below A$100,000 with 900-volt charging, while the 9X moves upmarket at around A$150,000 with six-seat luxury and Naim audio; both are heavy, road-focused monocoque vehicles rather than off-roaders.LI SHUFU LEAVES GEELY AUTO CHAIRLi Shufu has resigned as chairman of Geely Automobile after 40 years, with An Conghui succeeding him on 18 August 2026 and Li becoming honorary chairman for life while remaining controlling shareholder and chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding. Gan Jiayue becomes CEO as the group shifts from family-centred management toward professional systems, targeting two-thirds of sales outside China and 5% market share by 2030 across Europe, the Americas and Southeast Asia.LEIPZIG PREPARES FOR NEUE KLASSEBMW halted Leipzig production for a five-and-a-half-week summer shutdown in which over 2,000 contractors replaced 240 hydraulic lifting tables, installed 160 body-shop robots and swapped roughly 1,500 tonnes of steel to handle Neue Klasse underbodies integrating the battery and powertrain. BMW spent a low three-digit million sum on top of nearly €2 billion over five years, though it has not named which models Leipzig will build, as new i3 production began in Munich this month.SPARKCHARGE EXPANDS UK ENERGY NETWORKSparkCharge is bringing its US distributed energy model to the UK, serving autonomous fleets, construction and industrial sites that cannot wait for adequate grid connections. Founded by CEO Joshua Aviv and already operating across North America, the company will combine AI-optimised software, battery storage and on-site generation under new UK managing director James Taylor.FEDERAL PACKAGE TARGETS HEAVY EV BARRIERSAustralia has committed $400 million to heavy-vehicle reforms targeting charging barriers, automated permits, curfews and weight limits, announced by Treasurer Jim Chalmers after a Productivity Commission report found road-freight productivity had stalled for over a decade. The Commission estimated wider access for high-productivity and zero-emission trucks could add up to $4 billion to GDP annually, with electric trucks currently under 1% of Australian heavy-vehicle sales.ŠKODA ADDS V2L AND CAMP MODEŠkoda has added Vehicle-to-Load bidirectional charging, which powers external devices via a 230V boot socket, and an app-activated Camp Mode that maintains overnight cabin temperature with at least 30% charge. The new Peaq will also offer a Relax Package with AGR-certified massaging seats, electric leg rests and Sonos audio, plus a Wellbeing app, ventilated Phone Box and up to four 45W USB-C ports.BEACHMAN TARGETS OLD BIKES FOR ELECTRIC CONVERSIONBeachman Bikes is seeking broken motorcycles for electric conversion, building on founders Ben Taylor and Steve Payne's first prototype, a modified 1979 Kawasaki KZ200 completed in 2020, and a production run of 30 bikes on a 1970s 125cc platform. Having sold the 45 mph '64 as a Class II e-bike, the company is moving to pedal-free low-speed motorcycles in Canada and plans to end US e-bike sales next year to become a moped and motorcycle manufacturer.BRISBANE RIVER E-SCOOTERS STAY UNDERWATERAugust low tides exposed dozens of dumped Lime, Neuron and Beam e-scooters in the Brisbane River, including 24 near the CBD, with Ocean Crusaders having collected around 150 in the past year and storing the waterlogged batteries privately. Water experts warned that lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese could accumulate in sediment and harm macroinvertebrates, while the council caps operators at 7,100 devices and reportedly earned just over AUD$5m last financial year.

You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsHYUNDAI STARTS IONIQ 3 PRODUCTION IN TURKEYHyundai has begun building the IONIQ 3 at its Izmit plant in Turkey, the site's first EV, following a €250 million ($290 million) investment that modernised around half the facility. Initial output is 30,000 units a year, with Dutch prices from €27,995 ($32,000) and the next-generation BAYON and i20 to follow next year.HYUNDAI OPENS IONIQ 3 ORDER BOOKSHyundai Motor UK has opened orders for the IONIQ 3 compact hatchback from £22,245 on-the-road, positioning it against the Kia EV2, Renault 5 and VW ID Polo. Buyers choose a 42.2kWh battery with up to 213 miles or a 61kWh version with up to 308 miles, both charging 10-80% in about 30 minutes, and the car debuts Hyundai's Android Automotive-based PleOS Connect system. Grant eligibility is still pending.LUCID UNVEILS GRAVITY GT-SLucid's 2027 Gravity GT-S produces 1,070hp from a dual-motor powertrain and hits 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds, priced from $127,750 — about $14,000 below the outgoing Dream Edition. It comes with rear-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension as standard, while a 926V architecture supports 400kW charging that Lucid says adds 200 miles in under 12 minutes.FRANCE TO BACK USED ELECTRIC VEHICLESFrom September, France will subsidise used EV purchases and leases through the Energy Savings Certificates scheme, funded by energy suppliers including EDF, Engie and TotalEnergies under the polluter-pays principle. Cars must have been first registered in France between 2017 and 2023 and retain at least 80% battery capacity, with buyers required to keep the vehicle three years and to purchase through a dealer rather than privately.PORSCHE REPORTS POINT TO TAYCAN PHASE-OUTPorsche is reported to have agreed in principle with employee representatives to end Taycan production by 2029 or 2030, closing a roughly decade-long run, though nothing has been formalised or confirmed. Output has collapsed from 39,397 cars in 2023 to 11,510 in 2025, with first-half 2026 deliveries down 25% and no successor named as Porsche appears set to prioritise the electric Macan and Cayenne.TESLA ADDS V2L TO MODEL Y PREMIUMTesla has enabled vehicle-to-load for the Model Y Premium in the US and Puerto Rico, delivering 2.4kW at 120V via an $80 adapter that requires the Gen 3 Mobile Connector. Eligibility is narrower than the badge suggests, with reports indicating only newer Juniper-built cars from around May 2026 carry the necessary hardware, and Tesla still trails rivals offering up to 10.2kW.TESLA LEASES POWERWALL BACKUP IN TEXASTesla Electric is offering a whole-home Powerwall lease in selected Texas retail-choice areas for roughly $35 a month plus tax in year one, achieved by applying an $87 monthly credit to a two-unit lease costing about $122. The deal carries a 3% annual escalator, a $100 order fee, a 20% minimum backup reserve for virtual power plant dispatch, and credits that may not start until two billing cycles after installation and utility approval.CORVUS TO SUPPLY BATTERIES FOR BC FERRIES SUMMIT CLASSCorvus Energy will supply 40MWh of battery storage across four hybrid-electric Summit Class ferries for BC Ferries, each carrying 360 vehicles and 2,100 people and fitted with a 10MWh Dolphin NxtGen system. The hardware is scalable to 70MWh per vessel for near-zero-emission running once shore charging exists, with China Merchants' Weihai Shipyard delivering the first ship in 2029 and all four in service by 2031.FERRARI LUCE SELLS FOR $40 MILLIONChassis 0 of the Ferrari Luce, the marque's first EV and a one-off Tailor Made build designed by Sir Jony Ive's LoveFrom, sold for $40 million at RM Sotheby's Monterey auction, over 36 times its estimate and a record for a new car. The sale was offered without reserve and with no buyer's premium, sending the full amount to The Ferrari Foundation, with winning bidder Dr Herbert Wertheim taking delivery early next year.

ev.news Briefly: Ford, EV Targets, BYD Racco & more | 15 Aug 2026
It's ev.news Briefly for Saturday 15 August 2026, only todays headlines and nothing else, in just 4 minutes if you haven't got time for the full show.Patreon supporters fund this show, get the episodes ad free, as soon as they're ready and are part of the ev.news Community. You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsFORD SETS OUT UEV MODEL PLANSFord's Universal Electric Vehicle platform will underpin five models, beginning with the Fathom mid-size pickup in 2027 and an expected Escape revival in 2029, with the remaining launch dates undisclosed. The architecture supports up to eight body styles spanning B-segment cars, two- and three-row SUVs, sedans, a pickup and cargo and passenger vans, and launches with LFP cells while able to accept other chemistries.WEAKER EV TARGETS COULD RAISE OIL IMPORTSCarbon Brief analysis finds that weakening the UK's ZEV mandate — currently 33% BEV share in 2026, effectively 25% after flexibilities, rising to 80% by 2030 — could cost consumers up to £3bn ($4bn) a year, with a cut to 50% leaving 3m fewer BEVs on the road, adding 17m barrels of oil imports and lifting national emissions 2.5%. BEVs already cost around £1,100 ($1,485) a year less to run than petrol and beat rivals on total ownership cost by over £1,000 ($1,350), and while Energy UK and ChargeUK defend the mandate as the biggest single driver of emissions cuts, the SMMT argues natural demand falls short and reports suggest dilution is coming regardless.BYD RACCO TAKES OVER 1,000 JAPAN ORDERSBYD has logged more than 1,000 orders in two weeks for the Racco, its kei-class EV for Japan, and is targeting 10,000 sales by the end of 2026 in a market historically hostile to imports. Priced from £9,600 with a 22.4kWh battery and 130-mile range, most buyers are opting for the £11,500 35.8kWh version at 199 miles, comfortably ahead of the segment-leading Nissan Sakura's 112 miles.AVORE EX2S TARGETS INDIA'S COMMUTERSIndian startup Avore has launched the EX2S commuter motorcycle at ₹169,999 (about $1,800 / £1,330), using a 5kWh split-pack battery and a 10.5kW motor claiming 161 miles on the optimistic IDC cycle, 0-25mph in 2.8 seconds and a 70mph top speed. Onboard 1.5kW charging takes roughly two hours for 20-80% from a household socket, and features include a 7-inch TFT display, geo-fencing and a simulated four-speed SYFT mode, with no export plans announced.HUNGARY CURBS EV CHARGING IN HEATWAVEHeatwave and drought have cut Danube cooling water and left Hungary's only nuclear plant at Paks running at a fraction of capacity, forcing charging networks to curb evening peak demand. MOL has capped fast chargers at 100kW from 17:00-22:00, E.ON Drive Infrastructure has halved output at 300kW-plus sites to free up 10MW of grid capacity, Shell Recharge has limited stations to 150kW, Tesco and Metro have switched chargers off, and EV.app is instead pricing peak sessions at 420 forints (about €1.16) per kWh.BCP PLANS 1,128 ON-STREET EV SOCKETSBournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council will install 564 on-street chargers providing 1,128 public sockets by March 2029, delivered by Connected Kerb and aimed mainly at residents without off-street parking. The mostly lower-speed AC units form part of a £16.5m Dorset-wide programme funded by the Department for Transport's LEVI fund and private investment.PORTER'S 10,000TH ELECTRIC TRUCKIndian intra-city freight marketplace Porter has flagged off its 10,000th electric truck in Delhi, running over 50,000 EVs monthly across 50 cities via 600,000 driver-partners and claiming 1.85bn km of empty running eliminated, worth ₹10bn ($105m) in avoided fuel imports. Utilisation rather than fleet size is the pitch — Porter wants daily trips up from 1.5 to 2.5 — with owner-drivers funding vehicles themselves at ₹400,000-500,000 and Omega Seiki Mobility supplying 5,000 three-wheelers for last-mile work.COSTANOA TO HOST PEBBLE FLOW STAYSCostanoa in Pescadero, California, becomes the first hospitality destination where guests can book an overnight stay in a Pebble Flow, the all-electric, software-defined travel trailer developed by Apple, Tesla, Rivian and Zoox alumni. Sleeping two adults and two children with rooftop solar, off-grid power, Starlink and climate control, rates start at $450 (£332 / €389) a night plus tax and a $10 conservation fee, with a two-night weekend minimum.

ev.news Briefly: Global Sales, Ultium Cells, ID.3 Neo & more | 14 Aug 2026
It's ev.news Briefly for Friday 14 August 2026, only todays headlines and nothing else, in just 4 minutes if you haven't got time for the full show.Patreon supporters fund this show, get the episodes ad free, as soon as they're ready and are part of the ev.news Community. You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsGLOBAL EV SALES RISE, BUT CHINA RETREATSGlobal EV sales hit 1.85 million in July 2026, up 9% year on year but down 10% on June, with China falling 5% to around 980,000 even as NEVs took a record 60.4% of its new vehicle sales and NEV passenger exports jumped 147.8% to 540,000. Europe rose 33% to 450,000 and other markets 97% to 280,000, while North America fell 27% to 140,000 as the US decline widened beyond 30%.ULTIUM CELLS TO RESTART OHIO OUTPUTUltium Cells restarts battery-cell production next week at its Warren, Ohio plant after a seven-month shutdown blamed on falling EV demand and the cancelled $7,500 federal tax credit. The GM–LG joint venture site makes large-format NCMA pouch cells with over 45GWh annual capacity for nearly all GM EVs, and expects headcount to reach 1,400 after cutting roughly 1,330 jobs at closure.VOLKSWAGEN OPENS ID.3 NEO UK ORDERSVolkswagen opened UK orders for the ID.3 Neo on 13 August 2026 from £33,080, or £31,580 after the Government's £1,500 Electric Car Grant, with 50, 58 and 79 kWh batteries giving up to 390 miles and DC charging from 100 kW to 183 kW. The revised hatchback gains new LED headlights, an illuminated badge, the return of physical buttons and rotary controls, a new Innovision system with an in-car app shop, and a 3.6 kW V2L adapter.TESLA PLANS 124-STALL SUPERCHARGER IN SOUTHERN SAN FRANCISCOTesla filed plans on 26 May 2026 for a 124-stall Supercharger at 75 Waterloo Street in southern San Francisco, one of the largest globally and unusual for sitting inside a city rather than beside a highway. The site draws entirely from the grid with no solar canopies or Megapack storage, and includes a 416-square-foot building with two restrooms, vending machines and water fountains open 24 hours.CHARGING FAILURES HIT SIX-YEAR LOWPublic charging failures fell to 12% in the second quarter from 14% a year earlier and 19% in 2023 and 2024, the lowest in the six-year history of JD Power's study, which credited faster chargers and larger destination-style sites. Ionna led DC fast-charger satisfaction on 807 out of 1,000, ahead of Mercedes-Benz on 797, Rivian on 755 and Tesla on 701, against a segment average of 666.CHINESE CAR MAKERS BUILD IN AFRICAChinese car makers are opening African factories to absorb domestic overcapacity and sidestep European and North American trade barriers, with Chery buying Nissan's Rosslyn plant near Pretoria in July and BAIC and Great Wall already operating on the continent. South Africa, Morocco, Kenya, Ethiopia and Ghana are drawing investment through rebates, tax breaks and import bans on fossil-fuel cars, though weak grids, thin charging infrastructure and policy uncertainty still deter long-term commitment.GAC ADDS 44KWH AION UT WITH 320KM (199 MILES) WLTP RANGE IN LATE 2026GAC will add a 44kWh lithium iron phosphate entry version of the Aion UT with an estimated 320km (199 miles) WLTP range, priced under AUD$30,000 before on-road costs. It sits below the 60kWh Premium and Luxury at AUD$31,990 and AUD$35,990, answering cheaper rivals such as BYD's AUD$23,990 Atto 1 Essential and Geely's AUD$26,490 EX2 Complete.HONGQI TO ENTER AUSTRALIA IN 2027Hongqi will launch in Australia under the HQ name in January 2027 via Sydney distributor Greentech, starting with the E-HS9 large three-row electric SUV. Entry cars use a 99kWh NMC battery for 465km (289 miles) WLTP and higher trims a 120kWh pack for 515km (320 miles), with six- or seven-seat layouts and twin 16.2-inch displays, but no announced pricing.XCHARGE POWERS ELECTRIC AIRPORT FIRE ENGINEXCharge North America has deployed a 400-kW ultra-fast charger at Dallas Love Field Airport to serve Dallas Fire-Rescue's Rosenbauer Panther 6×6 Electric, billed as the world's first fully electric aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle. The airport handles almost 18 million passengers a year, and XCharge argues electrification reduces the logistical and environmental risks of moving and storing liquid fuel around aircraft operations. One flag: the GAC headline says late 2026, but the copy says "late next year" — from an August 2026 dateline those are a year apart. Worth resolving before publication.

ev.news Briefly: EV Switching. 2026 Forecast, Jag Type01 & more | 13 Aug 2026
It's ev.news Briefly for Thursday 13 August 2026, only todays headlines and nothing else, in just 4 minutes if you haven't got time for the full show.Patreon supporters fund this show, get the episodes ad free, as soon as they're ready and are part of the ev.news Community. You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/evnewsEARLY EV SWITCH CUT CO2 IN 92% OF UCSC SCENARIOSA University of California Santa Cruz study published in Science modelled over 400 vehicle scenarios and found that in 92% of them, switching to an electric car as soon as possible cut more emissions than keeping the combustion car, with the roughly three-year manufacturing carbon debt offset after about 21,500 kilometres in the case of the BMW iX3. Scrapping the old car rather than selling it cut lifecycle emissions by up to 44%, because selling it simply passes the petrol burning to someone else, though coal-heavy grids weaken the case and the study measured carbon rather than cost.EV VOLUMES FORECASTS 23.3M PLUG-IN SALES IN 2026, UP 7.8%EV Volumes expects global light-vehicle sales to fall in 2026 on economic and geopolitical pressures while plug-in sales rise 7.8% to about 23.3 million, taking share to 25.7% as BEVs climb 17.2% to an 18.5% share and PHEVs drop 10.6% to 7.2%. America is the drag, with US EV sales down 32.9% to 415,968 and a further 15% contraction forecast for 2026, while Western and Central Europe supplies the growth at 1.9 million sales, up 29.7%.JAGUAR REVEALS TYPE 01 INTERIOR BEFORE 6 OCTOBER NEW YORK UNVEILINGJaguar has shown the uncamouflaged cabin of the Type 01, the four-seat GT leading its reinvention as an all-electric luxury marque, with a central spine splitting the interior into four single-seat compartments, a sparse dashboard carrying only a driver display and small touchscreen, and finishes in travertine stone and artisan textiles. Like the Polestar 4 it has no rear window or mirror, relying on a camera feed, and the car appears at Monterey Car Week this weekend in fresh camouflage before its New York unveiling on 6 October.VW TO SHOW ELECTRIC ID. CALIFORNIA CRUISE AT CARAVAN SALONVolkswagen Commercial Vehicles will give the ID. Buzz-based ID. California Cruise its world premiere at Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf from 28 August to 6 September, calling it the first fully electric California and the foundation of a family of electric campervans. Alongside it is a concept for the California Beach featuring an inflatable kitchen under 10kg developed with Stuff Bubble and a convertible bed module of roughly 200 x 134cm, removable kit that lets buyers trade equipment weight against range.WAYMO HAS 684 FINISHED OJAI ROBOTAXIS WAITING AT MESAA tracker counting Waymo's Mesa, Arizona site found 953 Ojai robotaxis, of which 684 are finished and idle without passengers, up from around 500 in early June, alongside 12 completed Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxis. The Zeekr-built, Magna-converted Ojai carries the sixth-generation Waymo Driver with 13 cameras and four lidars for under $20,000 per vehicle, and is intended to replace the ageing Jaguar I-Pace fleet across San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix.YASA WINS DRIVE35 GRANT FOR RARE-EARTH-FREE AXIAL FLUX MOTORSOxford axial flux motor maker YASA has won UK government funding through the DRIVE35 Demonstrate competition for Project Resilience, which pursues two rotor pathways built on its existing stator, one using magnets free of heavy rare earths and one removing rare earths entirely. The work addresses a concentrated and politically exposed supply chain, but risks heat performance, and runs across the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary's Oxford, Bicester and Welshpool sites, which employ more than 300 people.AION UT HATCHBACK REACHES UK IN SEPTEMBER BELOW £30,000AION opens UK order books in September for the UT, a sub-4.3-metre electric hatchback with a 201hp front motor, 7.3-second 0-62mph time, a claimed 268 miles WLTP and a 30-80% charge in 24 minutes, priced below £30,000 though no exact figure has been given. Designed at GAC's Milan studio and following the V SUV as AION's second UK model, it takes on the CUPRA Raval, Volkswagen ID. Polo and Renault 5 with no dealer network or badge recognition to lean on.ANALYST THINKS AMERICANS WILL FORCE USA TO ADMIT CHINESE EVSWith Canada set to permit up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs a year and Mexico already selling them, Automotive Foresight's Yale Zhang argues American buyers who can see cheaper cars a few hours away will pressure politicians to open the market despite the 100% tariff and connected-car security rules. Local assembly, joint ventures and technology sold under other badges could bypass import tariffs anyway, and Ford's Jim Farley has warned staff Chinese rivals could arrive within five to 10 years while Ford works towards a $25,000 EV.TATA TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPING MULTI-POWERTRAIN PLATFORM FOR HONDA, BLOOMBERG REPORTSBloomberg reports that Tata Technologies is developing a platform supporting petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains across multiple vehicles for Honda, though neither company has confirmed the customer. Chief executive Warren Harris has referred only to a full vehicle programme won from an unnamed Japanese OEM in April, and India looks the likely market given Honda's pledge of ten models there by 2030 and Toshihiro Mibe's comments about using external development resources from 2028.WHITBY MORRISON DELIVERS ELECTRIC ICE-CREAM VAN TO HOCKING'S OF DEVONBritish converter Whitby Morrison has delivered what it calls the world's first fully certified electric ice-cream van to Hocking's of North Devon, built on a Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Chassis Cab with up to 274 miles of range, 10-80% charging in 34 minutes and a 4.25-tonne weight that keeps it within a Category B licence. Designed as an EV from the outset, it uses the company's ePower system to run the freezing equipment from the vehicle rather than a kerbside auxiliary engine, removing the noise from a trade that has traditionally announced itself by sound.
