Faith to Witness 99

Here’s the gist, human. Receiving God’s provisions is an ongoing challenge. For instance, right now. I am revving up for my annual Bible trek, Genesis through Revelation. So how is God preparing my heart this year? By putting me right in the middle of Joseph’s Egyptian journey. A “grain beyond measure” kind of motivation. When “God’s provisions eliminate scarcity” storyline. How does this prepare my heart? It’s easy. God’s provision for where I land on page 1140, the last page of Revelation, will be beyond measure. God’s provision will be beyond my wanting. Like the seven years of abundance Joseph stewarded in Egypt. So I must steward my 40+ pages well. Each day. Because this journey, and whatever journey you are currently on, will always evolve into a different need, into a deficiency that needs addressed, a relationship that is starving, a condition that is headed toward fatal. A famine that needs spiritual food. Here’s the gist, human. I hunt for the power of God in my life. I follow Sirga (Sierga), the 400 lb lioness living in the African bush. Just me and a million+ other humans. I do it because I am in pursuit of knowing God more deeply. I think God’s animal kingdom holds deep truth about his nature. Sirga gets my attention. Her presence is uncompromising. She brings the all of her in every moment. As an apex predator in her habitat, she is sovereign. God created her to be so. I am forever seeking to tighten my spiritual grip on the “omni” of my God. The totality of his everything. His all. His sovereign nature. Why? Because we live so far below it. We fall so far short of it. Here’s the gist, human. Friends inspire friends to witness. For starters, witness to each other. It’s good practice. Share what God is doing in your life. Do not live through your relationship with a friend on silent, unsaid assumptions that whisper amen. Speak loud, talk boldly to your friends about the presence of the heart of God in your life. We cannot ever get enough of God. We always need Jesus. We need his Word, we need spirit prompts to pull us back into the kingdom reality we are living toward.Jesus showed his disciples how to be a friend by sharing what he had learned from his Father. (His words, not mine.) He laid down his divine advantage to lay down his life for his friends. Here’s the gist, human. Jonathan, son of King Saul told the future king, David, that “the Lord is witness between you and me forever.” Now that’s a friendship sealed by a God who doesn’t mess around with the truth. Two warriors who immediately connected, bonded through God’s covenant, and made the pact Jesus talks about in John 15:13. So for one, can we just ponder the strength of having our Lord be a witness to the relationships he brings us to on this earth? And for another, can we rally our free will toward choosing friends that God ordains, friends who are invested in bringing a daily witness to others? This resonates. If you want to strengthen your witness to others, then commit to God as the witness between you and every friend you hold close. Choose wisely. I am not talking about connections built on emojis and amens. I am talking about shooting three arrows beyond the path of your friends and forging friendships that keep you on the path to find the one. The kind of friend who is working the same terrain, from a different cave, looking for lost sheep. Just like you.Had to be said. Here’s the gist, human. Embracing God’s nature, clinging to his Son’s robe with every fiber of my inner and outer being is not something I can do alone. Neither can you. It is God’s right hand, it is the surrendered will of Jesus that binds the moments when my gratitude shares space with my grief. Tell me it isn’t the same with you. When God’s grace saves us by bringing us into the struggle, and tells us to stand with him in the fire. That his nature, his divine presence is so powerful that he can bring us through, bring us closer, yes closer to his presence. This is how he grows us in his image. Does his nature overtake our nature through his metaphorical story? Does what appears to be a simple lesson become a powerful principle that runs through our bones? Here’s the gist, human. When was the last time you felt the kind of sorrow that overtook your soul? A flooding sorrow that filled every crevice of your heart, a rising pressure, the suffocating weight of sadness, a tragic suffering for what has come or is about to come, a fear that engulfs your spirit, a non-negotiable reckoning within your gut, so deep, such a feeling of hopelessness, an ending, a loss, a terminal feeling in a heart that hope has vacated, a churning stomach nauseous with defeat, a thousand veins in shock, paralyzed, pumping sadness through your core, a human tragedy that only you must feel, that your spirit has completely lost its way, confusing north with south, east with west, an all-consuming fire that is frantic, breathless, spiritless. When you feel this sorrow, no matter how unending that grief-laden moment, that time is, someone had it worse. Someone who was bound to the cross.Matthew 26:38Gethsemane38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”Jesus was taken up by his Heavenly Father. The intimacy with which we hold on to this promise is overwhelming. Like the sorrow in the soul of Jesus in that garden. It is crazy to think that in the beginning man walked with God in his garden. Here’s the gist, human. There are countless scenes in the Bible when someone stopped and laid down a personal affirmation of God’s promise, the Messiah’s purpose, an affirmation of God’s nature, his promises. Moses. Joshua. Daniel. Martha. The woman at the well. The people Jesus healed. The apostle Paul. People who had come face to face with the truth. And proclaimed it. Affirmation of what we believe can do all kinds of things: change our direction, our minds, our decisions. In that moment when we find ourselves turning away, or choosing to sit in our own self-pride, our own pride infested self-talk, or perhaps a paralyzing spiritual stupor. As if we couldn’t remember one of God’s promises, as if we couldn’t recall one phrase that Jesus said, or muster even a mental comma to gain spiritual clarity. But God knows us. In all of this earthy-ness we live in, he can tame our wild will for his purpose. By leaving our self-talk trail to live within his divine determination to make his home in our mind and heart. Join us. E182. Here’s the gist, human. If we spend our daily life ruled by the answers we need from God, our prayers can give in to a self-guided perspective. How lonely. We were not created to be alone. God walked with Adam and Eve in the garden. Until. A deep prayer life is not complicated. It is contemplative. Prayer is God’s answer before the answer before the answer. His call to come sit with him. Listen to his Word, reflect, respond, and sit in his presence. If the Word became flesh, and Jesus became our Savior then we should bring that Word into our prayer life. Imagine prayer like walking along the road to Emmaus with Jesus and the two men (believers) after he was resurrected, but before he ascended. The moments of silence when all you hear is his footsteps beside you. Here’s the gist, human. I find myself growing beyond spiritual ultimatums like “I am at peace” as if peace in God is a static condition. For me peace is a tributary of God’s nature, his spirit running through my heart. And I have to listen for it.Moving water takes its cue from its Creator. God navigates our choices, our mental roadblocks, our psychological debris from the past, our grief, our fear of failure, our fear of anything, everything. It’s pretty clear. Rivers shape landscapes. This is why God turns our attention to it. Here’s the gist, human. I miss my dog. I spent the last two years deeply anxious about losing her. I prayed for a circumstance, a manageable outcome, a long runway to losing her, a prolonged exit that would let us down gently into a daily life without her. That didn’t happen. Truth is, anxiety isolates us from God. That should be an unbearable separation. If I had given my anxiety about losing my wheaten girl to God along the way, and petitioned for his presence, instead of petitioning for an outcome—to give me more time with her, to heal her—I could draw more fully on his presence now. That is the scope of anxiety across our lives, when it tightens its grip so much so that we are spiritually stalled from preparing for life’s earthly trials. So I am banging on God’s door, asking God to be my fortress. For so many of us, that is an ongoing rhetorical state of mind. We don’t even need to answer. We know it’s true. Let’s call anxiety exactly what it is. Let’s name it to God. A petition of the heart. That we take it to him, and let him measure the depth of our anxiety against the scope of its reach in our life. Because our God is sovereign.Join us. Here’s the gist, human. The young, ambitious Peter, and the young, skeptical James grew up, spiritually. It comes from his experiences, that he has lived his life trading measure for measure, that what he does in action, will receive a reciprocal spiritual strengthening. That spiritual maturity is embracing the glory-bound spiritual gain of things. His life convinces us of this: that a full investment in our obedience yields the highest spiritual return. We can’t not hear Peter.My faith is defined by my spiritual maturity in action, my truth on the ground. They both offer wisdom that comes from one place: living in the middle of hard-fought truth on the ground. Here’s the gist, human. Amos had a harsh message about God’s sovereignty for the Israelites in the Northern Kingdom. For us, while we are focusing on his sovereignty we can pray for hearts that see him. For us it is waking up in a mindset of preparation, in fact, asking God to prepare your mind to meet him in that day. Because he will show up. Amos tells us that our God will reveal his thoughts. Not unlike God turning from the wind gust he just sent across the Rockies to tell me something I need to know and obey. When God guides you through the Holy Spirit, imagine all the ways he is simultaneously sustaining and directing others and his creation.Because he is sovereign. This tells me there is only one direction to look. Up. Your vertical status with God has everything to do with your horizontal status in your earthly life. Mine too.E174. Here’s the gist, human. If you want to transform your spiritual life, how about a solo row with God? A solo row is a journey that you cannot do without God, without Jesus, without the Holy Spirit. Seems like a paradox, doesn’t it? But it’s really such a defining truth, that when we accept that our relationship with our Maker is 100% up to our free will and his glorious nature we head for much deeper water. A solo row that is between you and God, destined for a new spiritual horizon. Spiritual sea legs. Amazing. It takes a day to day commitment to our conviction, our confidence in God. And the world he made for us to live in.Consider Taryn. The first American woman to compete in the World’s Toughest Row as a solo athlete. On day 34, at sunrise, Taryn witnessed a whale do a vertical jump in front of her. An image that will live on in her heart as a divine metaphor for her WHY. Courage in action. Conviction that is contagious. Tracking this kind of courage is a lesson we can’t ignore, and the beauty of it, the power of it, is that she has been rowing for 40+ days and at any point of my day I can stop and know this: Taryn is on that boat, rowing. Who is she? Why do I want to take a closer look at, get up close and personal with Psalm 31, verse 20? What is really going on inside this verse? Why do I feel compelled to bring this to my listeners, in our pursuit of knowing God more deeply?I do it because when someone or something captures my attention I should stake a claim on my time, my value, my worth in God’s kingdom. Here’s the gist, human. When we encounter trouble, it may start with well-lit enemies but inevitably draws who David names as “neighbors” and “closest friends.” This tells me that our human nature is the common denominator of adversity, that the trust we have must be anchored in God’s character. By this, that all humans fall to adversity without him. The thing we fall prey to bares little difference from enemies to neighbors to friends. Everyone gets pulled under without God. The evil of our enemies embraces the ambiguity within our neighbors and friends to coax them over the line into betrayal. Human nature has a betrayal gene. It clings to everyone, everything that is not-God, all of life that keeps us from God.So what does David do? How does he beckon God’s presence? The power of Psalm 31 today, to show how the psalms of the shepherd turned king can be a praise trail we walk to find clarity in the middle of life’s confusion.  E171. I want this for you. Barrage yourself with questions and considerations: is this a resolution Christ would entertain? Does he want to spend his time in your life this way? Is your resolution short-sighted, selfish, in pursuit of earthly favor? Does your resolution reflect the sacrifice he made for you, and does he want to sustain it for you? Ask him. Pray about it. Scrap a thousand resolutions for the one that Christ puts on your heart. I understand that many of you are making resolutions and rallying your spiritual fortitude to greet 2026 head on. With a full heart for Christ. I want to be with you for that. I feel the energy of it. Settle in to why he came, how he walked, and what he did that is the only gift any human needs. Read through the gospel of Matthew to prepare your heart for this giving season. It beckons us to buy one more gift, bake one more batch, complete one more project, more wanting, needing, stressing, all kinds of things that shortchange us from loving others with spiritual gifts money cannot buy, deeds cannot complete, and human nature cannot redeem. Here’s the gist, human. I prompted us to make a list of Red Sea moments when the water walls were held up by God. Let’s consider Moses, God and the Red Sea first. The epic exodus. And the Red Sea process we can expect when God fights for us to gain his glory. These moments, experiences, seasons are such an honor, human. An honor to be able to see the water walls as we walk, to see what God is containing, the horses, the chariots behind us being submerged by his hand. I have two Red Sea affirmations. Affirmation #1: When I am confused, and I want to turn back; when I am terrified, doubtful, confused, frustrated, I continue to walk through his parted waters. Affirmation #2: Whatever he delivers me to, makes me stay in, pulls me out of; however I depend on him, how I call for him, how I rest in him, will be for one purpose—that he gain glory for himself in the eyes of believers and nonbelievers. E165. Here’s the gist, human. When I am blind to my intent, Jesus helps me see my motivation through his eyes. When I am paralyzed by a problem, he moves me to my next step. When I accumulate earthly scabs from being “in the world” he purifies my inner skin. When I turn away from his voice, he whooshes divinity deep into my ear. When I am thrown down by my human nature, he raises my spirit. Blind, lame, infected, deaf, and dead. That’s me. But God gave me the gift of reconciliation through his Son. And now, I (and all believers) have this gift we can tell others about. It starts with our gratitude that we can see, walk, heal, hear and live eternally. We can do what Jesus tells us to do, “report to others what we hear and see” our Savior doing in our lives. Why? So another human can be reconciled to God. E164. Here’s the gist, human. Misrepresenting Jesus is to posture about his persona instead of emulating his power. We have a choice: to reflect Jesus, or to mispresent him. God grants believers the gift of suffering for Christ. It is not a consequence of sin. That’s how I see it. It is a consequence of being a believer. Paul tells us that believing and suffering are gifts from God. The Holy Spirit is not with us to comfort us by never challenging us. He is with me; He is with you to comfort us in the struggle. I think it is a struggling toward, a suffering toward relationships that stand firm in one Spirit. And proof to adversaries that they are condemned by their behavior. E163. Here’s the gist, human. Consider a word that cuts to the bone for so many humans. Sacrifice. And this. God first sacrifices a Son (John 3:16) to give us a King. Jesus sacrifices his life to give humanity eternal life. Humanity, every human can sacrifice a life of earthly gain, the human gain of things, to live in the redeeming praise of His victory. Here’s the gist, human. We find solace in repeating decisions that allow us to retreat from what is uncomfortable. We think we are making good decisions. We ask God to direct us. Yet because we cannot see how it is possible that he can navigate the decisions of people out of our control, well, we stand at the window like a child, watching for his next move when barely a minute has passed in the presence of a timeless God. We fall into resignation when our situation, our relationship continues on with no change, no turn for the better. This sounds like some spiraling indie reality, but we actually do this in lives that aren’t half-bad. Tolerable.
