FFR 273: The Wedding Banquet (2025)

A.C. and Kat experienced Andrew Ahn's remake of The Wedding Banquet across somewhat of a generational divide. He finds it relies on a millennial aesthetic portrayal of queer identity, with inauthentic politics. She (who watched it with Gen X family members) thought it was sweeter and more satisfying than he did. But, having also seen Ang Lee's 1993 original, Kat thinks the movies might be trying to accomplish two different things. Overall, we both wanted higher stakes and a lot more of the incredible maternal characters played by Youn Yuh-jung and Joan Chen. Discussed in this episode: Plugged In's review This meme that made A.C. think of the shack two of this movie's characters live in Our 2024 episode about Pedro Almodóvar's short film Strange Way of Life starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke The "Driver's Ed" sketch from I Think You Should Leave, featuring Patti Harrison Kat's essay about Twin Peaks Justinian Huang's novel Lucky Seed Find Kat: NEW: katexmachina.substack.com letterboxd.com/katexmachina bsky.app/profile/katexmachina.bsky.social twitter.com/kat_ex_machina Find A.C.: letterboxd.com/aclamberty instagram.com/aclamberty Find Us: Our Website Subscribe to FFR on Apple Podcasts Twitter Instagram Letterboxd bsky.app/profile/femfreq.bsky.social

    FFR 272: Crooklyn

It was an absolute joy to spend time in the world of Spike Lee's 1994 bildungsroman Crooklyn. Co-written by Lee and his siblings Joie and Cinqué, the film follows nine-year-old Troy navigating herself, her neighborhood, and her extended family in 1973. We're refreshed to see Lee's rich visual language as the backdrop for a young girl as the hero of the story of growing up. Especially when so many other auteur's attempts at this have left us feeling unimpressed. It's a messy movie, sure, but beautifully shot by Arthur Jafa (Daughters of the Dust) with knockout performances from the kids to the parents—played by Alfre Woodard and Delroy Lindo. FFR 271: 98th Oscar Nominees

Kat and A.C. go through the films that will be fêted at this Sunday's Academy Awards. We feel a big shift in our relationship to Oscar movies, and aren't sure how much of that is the disintegration of the entertainment industry, and how much is just growing up. Plus, we play a new game all about The Relentless Diane Warren's 17 Oscar-Nominated Songs. (Don't laugh: her career trajectory has been a real cultural bellwether!) FFR 270: Real Women Have Curves

Our "Focus on the Family" season is back after an unexpected hiatus! [Once again: sorry for the interruption; a member of our team had an ongoing family medical situation, but we're happy to be with you again.] It was a big nostalgia kick for Kat to revisit Patricia Cardoso's 2002 Sundance darling Real Women Have Curves, but this was a first-time watch for A.C. We talk about how America Ferrera's body has been perceived by Hollywood over the years, from this and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants to Barbie. It's a hyper-realistic and occasionally difficult to watch portrayal of a fraught mother-daughter dynamic, and well worth its place as a modern classic preserved by the National Film Registry. FFR 269: The Kids Are All Right

For the first episode of our "Focus on the Family" season, we're taking it back to 2010—a time before Prop 8 when a Sundance movie could really make a big impact on the widespread film landscape. Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are All Right is a great example of a specific early 21st-century portrayal of queer families with a "coastal elite" filter, and how it straddled the line between caricature and accuracy.Discussed in this episode:Patti Harrison's Annette Bening impersonationFocus on the Family's "Plugged In" reviewFind Kat:letterboxd.com/katexmachinabsky.app/profile/katexmachina.bsky.socialtwitter.com/kat_ex_machinaFind A.C.:letterboxd.com/aclambertyinstagram.com/aclambertyFind Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramLetterboxdNEW: bsky.app/profile/femfreq.bsky.social

    FFR 267: THE WIZ

Watching the 1968 film adaptation of the Broadway musical The Wiz, we can't help but feel that director Sidney Lumet and screenwriter Joel Schumacher deeply underserved their stars, craftspeople, and source material. It's impossible not to be captivated by the performances, especially as the movie is such a memorable intersection of the careers of Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, but the staging and writing continually let us down.Discussed in this episode—the September 1975 Essence article by Sharon Stockard Martin: "The Tanning of Oz: Reflections on the Usurpation of a Myth," which is available for Patreon supporters to read at patreon.com/femfreq.Find Kat:letterboxd.com/katexmachinabsky.app/profile/katexmachina.bsky.socialtwitter.com/kat_ex_machinaFind A.C.:letterboxd.com/aclambertyinstagram.com/aclambertyFind Us:Support Our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramLetterboxdNEW: bsky.app/profile/femfreq.bsky.social

    FFR 266: FUNNY GIRL

We couldn't do a whole season about movie musicals without watching a Barbra vehicle. There are so many elements of 1968's Funny Girl that elevate the form, from William Wyler's direction taking a stage show to the screen, and Streisand's performance as her character Fanny Brice evolves from fame-hungry teenager to worldly star and wife. We found a lot of nuance in the film's exploration of labor and gender dynamics, and can't help but watch this as a memetic piece of a puzzle with Postcards from the Edge, All That Jazz, A Star Is Born and countless explorations of insecure men struggling in romantic relationships with successful women.Find Kat:letterboxd.com/katexmachinabsky.app/profile/katexmachina.bsky.socialtwitter.com/kat_ex_machinaFind A.C.:letterboxd.com/aclambertyinstagram.com/aclambertyFind Us:Join Our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramLetterboxdNEW: bsky.app/profile/femfreq.bsky.social

    FFR 265: GLEE

Never has the micro-generational divide between Kat and A.C. been sharper than in their relationships to Glee, arguably the most influential musical series ever on television. It's hard not to get glib in our discussion of the "issues" the show attempted to tackle over the course of its six seasons. Especially when the show's tone varied from mean-spirited to earnest representation politics throughout the course of the series.Discussed in this episode:‘Glee’ 15th Anniversary: Looking Back at a Cultural Moment Never to Be Repeated by Erin Strecker for IndieWire in 2024Don't Rain on My Parade (Plasma's Version)Find Kat:letterboxd.com/katexmachinabsky.app/profile/katexmachina.bsky.socialtwitter.com/kat_ex_machinaFind A.C.:letterboxd.com/aclambertyinstagram.com/aclambertyFind Us:Subscribe to Our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramLetterboxdNEW: bsky.app/profile/femfreq.bsky.social

    FFR 264: ALL THAT JAZZ

Is this the first "perfect" movie we've covered on this podcast? This was Kat's first time watching Bob Fosse's 1979 self-referential musical drama All That Jazz, one of A.C.'s absolute favorites. There's something compelling about the way Joe Gideon, Fosse's stand-in for himself, is far from being the hero in his own larger-than-life story of addiction, perfectionism, and womanizing. And though the ending is foreshadowed from the opening scene, it's still jaw dropping when it happens.Discussed in this episode:"Le Jeune Homme et La Mort," the opening ballet from White Nights (1985).Find Kat:letterboxd.com/katexmachinabsky.app/profile/katexmachina.bsky.socialtwitter.com/kat_ex_machinaFind A.C.:letterboxd.com/aclambertyinstagram.com/aclambertyFind Us:Join Our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramLetterboxdNEW: bsky.app/profile/femfreq.bsky.social

    FFR 263: GUYS AND DOLLS

For the first full episode of our new "Musical Mayhem" season, we watched the 1955 film Guys and Dolls. The gender expectations and relationship dynamics between the central two couples in this movie feel like they'd be right at home in today's modern "trad wife" resurgence as certain segments of society seek to backslide into authoritarianism. Even the series finale of the Sex and the City follow-up And Just Like That... portrays established, successful women post-middle age wringing their hands about whether a man will propose. Unsurprisingly, Guys and Dolls' thin handling of race and class leaves a lot to be desired. But, there's joy to be had in many of the song-and-dance numbers, especially "Pet Me Poppa" featuring Vivian Blaine as showgirl Adelaide.Discussed in this episode:Tituss Burgess performing "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" at the 2009 Tony AwardsCarrie Coon talking about the training that sets theater performers apart in a time when arts programs are underfundedFind Kat:letterboxd.com/katexmachinabsky.app/profile/katexmachina.bsky.socialtwitter.com/kat_ex_machinaFind A.C.:letterboxd.com/aclambertyinstagram.com/aclambertyFind Us:Join Our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramLetterboxdNEW: bsky.app/profile/femfreq.bsky.social

A.C. and Kat are joined by director Sav Rodgers to discuss his documentary feature debut, Chasing Chasing Amy, and the complicated legacy of its subject matter, Kevin Smith's 1997 film Chasing Amy. Sav shares about the arduous process of becoming the central story in his own doc, and examining his relationship to the movie that saved his life as a young queer person. FFR 261: Wicked: Part One

A.C. and Kat are back from their first semester at Shiz University for winter break, and we just had to talk about Jon M. Chu's blockbuster Broadway adaptation of Wicked: Part One. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the story before the story we all know from The Wizard of Oz, this is a tale that was originally published as a novel by Gregory Maguire in 1995. On its face it's a movie about accepting yourself when you don't fit in, but it's much more so about the way marginalized communities are threatened by authoritarian governments and the complicit neighbors who don't want to "rock the boat." We were impressed by its portrayal of class consciousness and the added nuance brought by casting a Black actress in the role of Elphaba. Finally, we hold a mini state of the union on Hollywood movie musicals.Find Kat:twitter.com/kat_ex_machinaletterboxd.com/katexmachinaFind AC:instagram.com/aclambertyletterboxd.com/aclambertyFind Us:Support Our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramNEW: Letterboxd

Luke Perry biographer Margaret Wappler joined us for a conversation about her hybrid memoir profiling the '90s heartthrob, and the impact Perry had on viewers from 90210 to Riverdale. We dug into Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring Perry alongside Kristy Swanson and Donald Sutherland. We particularly loved the comedic swings of supporting cast members Paul Reubens and David Arquette. Kat and A.C. ~*witnessed*~ the fifth installment in George Miller’s apocalypse epic, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and… we found it completely unnecessary. We know that movies about women are not by default inherently feminist (Anita tweeted about this specifically related to Fury Road back in 2015), but it’s always a bummer when we’re more invested in the male characters in a movie centered around a female protagonist. In this week’s episode, Kat holds court on the movie that seemed uniquely designed just for her (which she ultimately found fairly disappointing): The Fall Guy. Directed by longtime stunt performer David Leitch and starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, A.C. and Kat predominantly found the movie… “cute.” Which is fine! Join Kat and A.C. for a discussion of one of their most hotly anticipated movies of 2024, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. The FFR hosts were mixed on their reactions, but both saw opportunities where it could have ascended to greater heights than it ultimately did—in particular with the underwritten female character in the middle of the film’s central love triangle. While we love the craft accomplishments of this movie, we can’t help but wonder what Paul Verhoeven might have done with this story.Plus, we check in on this spring’s film festivals, from the recently debuted Los Angeles Festival of Movies presented by Mubi to the 77th annual festival in Cannes, which just kicked off.Discussed in this episode:FFR "Cyberpunk Summer" episode on Strange Days w/ Emily St. JamesFind Kat:twitter.com/kat_ex_machinaletterboxd.com/katexmachinaFind AC:instagram.com/aclambertyletterboxd.com/aclambertyFind Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramNEW: Letterboxd
