"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end - Lucius Annaeus Seneca" - Semisonic The final volume of the Nice Work series...and how nice it's been! From the start of this series the ethos has been to release a continual, if not instant, flow of tracks to steadily document the creative practice inspired by a 1985 treatise on the topic titled Art & Fear. And of course to, like, drop big heavy groovers. Nice Work Vol. 3, Fennec's most personal entry into the series, does just that with tracks made last month and some that were started over 3 years ago. Opener "I Luv It" (which you may recognize from Fennec's "a dj set under the texas sun") begins with a moody piano loop before descending into pure subterranean goodness with more breaks & bongos than you can shake a stick at. Next up, it's the track that DJs have been hounding Fennec for every time he plays it; that's right, it's CLAM TIME Y'ALL. "Vongole Asporto" (aka “takeaway clams”) has it all: serial killer interviews, warped television feedback, and dubby girl group echoes from your dreams. After sweating your soul out, it's time for a snack break. On "Snack Dub" we take a brief meditation on a piano loop filtering up and down until poor Mr. Drum Machine can't machine no more. We end with a little comfort, a little consolation, and a ton of loopy reassurances with "Better" which eventually, as all things do, breaks loose into a chopped up blitz of soul-infused madness. It's gonna be fine, just give it some time! Who are we? Where are we going? Where have we come from? What is the best kind of potato chip? Nice Work Vol. 3 answers these questions, and more.

Continuing in the spirit of the Nice Work series by giving journalistic snapshots of my daily musical practice, these tracks span all the way back to 2020 up to just about a month ago. After roaming and combing through hundreds of projects, I landed on this bouquet of tracks tied with a string of organic, cerebral, and arboreal motifs. From Kongobongo's loopy chants and Sorry I Missed Your Call's dastardly bassline funk to the wistful pianos and strings of One for Me and Destination, there's something for the whole family. Recently I was accepted as resident DJ for Shared Frequencies and this put me on the path to meet our next artist, Fennec. This laid back groovy soul is a lovely creator. I dove in to his Bandcamp and was instantly in love with his sound. His mixes consist of leftfield finds, deep house, and other various styles. With releases on Haus of ALTR, Thirty Year Records, and his own label you can certainly be sure you will find something interesting to dive in to. He has been passionate about production and mixing music since 2014 and draws on influences like Omar S, Axel Bowman and The Avalanches. His music has been recognized by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Resident Advisor. You're in for a treat with this one."

I read a book several years ago called Art & Fear about the everyday perils and obstacles of the artmaking process, which I found extended to a philosophy of living as well. There was this idea that the actual “work” of art should be done simply because that is the process of making art. And so, under that influence, I wanted to release smaller collections of songs in pursuit of this idea of just doing “nice work.” Plus, like, I wanted y'all to hear some new tunes. My process of making music has always been diaristic, weaving creation into everyday life and vice versa. The tracks here are among the first I completed after moving from Indianapolis to Austin and have all been played out in a DJ set at some point. I've been DJ'ing more than usual this past year which has lent a nocturnal liveliness that’s captured with this collection. In that spirit, the artwork is an evening picture I took from my backyard of Austin’s famed “violet crown” sky. Detroit house music, Thomas Bangalter's Roulé label, and Lemon Jelly all make spiritual appearances through their influence in this quartet.
