FIVE Minutes with Phil

by Phil Routly

I am so proud of every one of my kids and grand-kids, but I have regrets. One of those regrets is that I have not been able to pour my life experience into them the way I would have liked to. What if I could spend just five minutes with each of them, every day? What would we talk about? What experiences would I share with them? What “wisdom” could I pass on to them? How would I tell them that I see the world? With this blog, I hope to be able to do that.

  3. "From Conception to Eternity: A Divine Perspective on Life" *1 Timothy 6:13)

"I charge you" is the key to this chunk of Scripture, and for that, you need to go back to what I said in my comments on 1 Tim. 5:21, "I charge you to keep these instructions..." An important requirement for a "charge" is for there to be witnesses. In this case, Paul points to God, and to Christ...

Final Charge to Timothy Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. At age 19, Harry Read joined the military in his native England, and went to war to defeat Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime. Final Charge to Timothy 1. 11 But you, man of God, 2. flee from all this, Run from "all this." What is all this? In a nutshell, isn't it the love of money, which is a root of all kinds of evil, that has caused some to wander from the faith and bring grief on themselves? For some reason, this made...

  8. Who Are You? (1 Timothy 6:11a)

With this week's "Timothy My Son," we're entering Paul's Final Charge to Timothy. He's already done some really powerful teaching, but it's nearly time to say good-bye. Paul begins this section by writing, "But you, man of God There are a lot of things I would like to be said at my memorial...

  9. It's A Trap! (1 Timothy 6:9)

9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many...

  10. For The Love of Money (1 Timothy 6:10)

9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many...

  11. Naked I came, Naked I go (1 Timothy 6:7)

7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. "If I can't take it with me, I'm not going!" But have you noticed you never see a U-haul behind a hearse? Years ago, there was a King Tut exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, featuring artifacts from the...

  12. The Path to Abundant Living (part 2) (1 Timothy 6:6,8a

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain… 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. There is a serious issue that I've seen too many times over the years when it comes to the idea of contentment, and that is that Christians ought to be satisfied with the status quo.…

  13. The Path to Abundant Living (part 1) (1 Timothy 6:6,8a)

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain… 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Godliness with contentment is great gain. What about godliness without contentment? For that matter, what is contentment? These are the running shoes worn by basketball star Steph...

  14. Is this how you can get rich? (1 Timothy 6:5)

5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. The first election I remember was an Ontario provincial election in 1960. The reason I remember it is that we had a polling station in our house…

  15. Navigating the Battleground of Words (1 Timothy 6:2-4)

These are the things you are to teach and insist on. 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words…

  16. How Can This Message of Respect Apply to Modern Life? 1 Timothy 6:1-2a

How should we, in our western culture, be thinking about a passage on the relationship between slaves and their masters? One way is to take it at face value for Timothy and others who would have read these words in the first century. In fact, that's always the best way to understand and interpret...

  17. When you know, you know. 1 Timothy 5:24-25

24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever. Some day, every thought, every action, every private moment, every…

  18. Should a Christian Use Medication? 1 Timothy 5:23

23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. Now, this seems to come out of nowhere! Unless you put it in the context of someone in leadership, who has stomach troubles, ulcers, or other worry-induced ailments. In Timothy's case, Paul...

  19. How Pure is Pure? 1 Timothy 5:22b

22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. Context is king. A text without a context is a pretext. So when Paul says "Do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure," he has to be writing about leaders, and the possibility…

  20. Who's in charge around here? 1 Timothy 5:22a

22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. Whenever the Council of Elders meets at our church, we invite people from the congregation and the community to meet with us for prayer. Typically, we will introduce ourselves, ask a few...

  21. "Who's your favourite?" 1 Timothy 5:21c

21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism. One of the things that bothers people the most is favouritism. We have a bias toward fairness. And we have a tendency to look out first…

I've got this picture in my mind, of a mother bending down in front of her little boy, taking both his hands in hers, looking deeply into his eyes, and saying, "Mommy and Daddy are going to be going out for a while, and I need you to promise that you will do whatever Auntie Mary tells you to do....

  24. Elders: Double Honour; Double Responsibility (1 Timothy 5:19)

19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning. 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these...

  25. Elders: Deserving Servants (1 Tim. 5:18)

17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.” Paul now grabs two quotes from the…

  26. Elders: Worthy of Double Honour (1 Tim. 5:17)

17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. Who are these elders Paul is referring to? Everyone who is involved in directing the affairs of the church. It's about church leaders. I think this would be a...

  27. Widows: Good Stewardship (1 Timothy 5:16)

16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need. In some ways, this seems like an odd way for Paul to conclude this section on aiding widows who...

  28. Widows: Don't Give Satan a Foothold (1 Tim. 5:14-15

4 So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan. This is a repetition of Paul has already said - it's better to marry than to burn, and it's better to do...

  29. Widows: Don't Waste Your Lives (1 Tim. 5:13)

11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. 13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going…

  31. Widows: A Call to Compassion and Discernment (1 Tim. 5:9-10)

9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of...

  32. Widows: The Whole Truth (1 Timothy 5:7-8)

7 Give the people these instructions, so that no one may be open to blame. 8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Timothy, I know there is an endless list of things you need to be teaching to...

  33. Widows: Contrasting Priorities (1 Timothy 5:5-6)

5 The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. Put your hope in God and live, or seek pleasure and you are already dead. That pretty much…

So,...

  35. Widows: Protecting The Most Vulnerable - Introduction (1 Timothy 5:3a)

Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. In Paul's first letter to Timothy, chapter 5, beginning at verse 3, he takes the next 13 verses to talk about the relationship between widows - those women whose husbands had died - and their families, and the church. There are...

  36. I'm Sick and Tired of the "F" Word 1 Tim. 5:1-2

One of the great loses in our society as a whole is the loss of respect for one another. Apparently, it's nothing new! I know that when I was growing up, I was taught to respect others, especially those in authority. Teachers were Mr. This and Mrs. That. Most people at church were Mr., Miss, or...

  37. Winners Never Quit; Quitters Never Win (1 Timothy 4:16b)

Last fall, Elsie and I celebrated our 51st anniversary - 51 years of wedded bliss. Okay, it wasn't all bliss. We have survived 50 years of being married. No, it's better than that, but it wouldn't have happened without perseverance. We refused to give up. When Dave (our oldest) and Maia first got...

  38. Walk With Confidence: Don't trip! (1 Tim. 4:16)

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. "What you do and who you are speak so loudly, I can't hear what you...

  39. God gave it to you. Now use it! - 1 Timothy 4:14

In many ways, pastors are expected to be jacks of all trades. When we were pastors of our first church in Toronto, by necessity, we did everything. 1. Lead the church 2. Teach the church 3. Count the offering 4. Account for the finances - balance the books 5. Do the banking 6. Lead the Sunday...

  40. Train yourself to be Godly - 1 Timothy 4:7

6 If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For...

  41. Leaving a Legacy of Faithfulness for Generations to Come (1 Timothy 4:15c)

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. I think another John Wooden quote is appropriate here: “Be more...

  42. The Path to Greatness: The Secret of Always Giving 100% (1 Tim. 4:15b)

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. 44. God Didn't Give It To You For You To Sit On It (1 Tim. 4:14b)

What do you know about spiritual gifts? And what do you know about YOUR spiritual gifts? Once upon a time, I knew next to nothing about spiritual gifts. I knew about the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon humanity, along with a hurricane, with tongues of fire coming upon each head...

  45. From Reading to Doing God's Word (1 Tim. 4:13b)

One of my fondest memories of my Dad is the many times that I would walk up the stairs to our bedrooms, look in Mom and Dad's room, and see my Dad sitting at a round card table, sitting on one of those folding chairs that came with the table, hunched over his Bible, writing notes. The table had...

  46. Are You All In? (1 Timothy 4:13)

In the 1990's, we visited Willow Creek Church near Chicago a number of times. Willow Creek was the vanguard for the Seeker Driven model of church growth, with almost everything they did on weekend service designed to communicate with those who had not yet made a commitment to follow Jesus. As you...

  47. 1 Timothy 4:12 Don't Let Anyone Look Down On You

How do you set expectations for people? Well, I guess it starts with the question, what is it I want them to do? If I was picking players for a volleyball or basketball game, I would tend to go with the taller players - such as Pascal Siakim, who is 6'9" tall and earns $33M US per season playing...

  48. Command and Teach These Things (1 Tim. 4:11)

11 Command and teach thesethings. 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not...

  49. Why Do You Work? (1 Tim. 4:10)

Why do people work? The first thing that obviously comes to mind is to put food on the table, a roof over our heads, and to care for our families. But when you think about it, those are more of what are we working for, rather than why do we work. The reason you do things is important. In his...

  50. A Trustworthy Saying (1 Timothy 4:9)

There are a lot of saying out there. "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." "A stitch in time saves nine." "Practice makes perfect." While most may be true, they're not necessarily true all the time. I remember meeting a golf pro once who said, "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect...
