Episode 342: It's Alright, Ma (It's Only Early May)

After sitting out April, your fearless Flags duo return to check in on the State of Things in early May.We largely cover two topics, each based on a recent piece by Mike at Baseball Prospectus. The saves landscape: is it different in 2026? or just variations on a theme that has been with us for the last decade? (Read the article: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/article/106614/why-saves/)Help! My best player stinks! You drafted an early bat who is underperforming--what should you do? what can you do? First of all, don't freak out, but second of all, you will need to look at all of your categories closely. Episode 341: Draft Retrospective and Season Preview

Alas, the real baseball is here! We chat about the misfire of Netflix's opening night before going through some topics related to both the draft season that has just ended and the real season just underway. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 340: Mike's Tout Wars Draft + Starting Pitching Road Map

If you looked at the Tout Wars Mixed Draft, which took place on Tuesday, March 3rd, you may have noticed that your friendly neighborhood co-host avoided starting pitchers like they were germ-ridden toddlers, in effect conceding two of the ten roto categories. Why did he do this? What were his goals? Did he accomplish the plan to satisfaction? The first half of the pod covers these questions. Then, rather than try to exhaustively discuss the massive pool of starting pitchers, we look at how you might approach a draft in terms of planning an overall strategy for starting pitching. We do not really do any deep dives on individual players, but we have a lively discussion about how to game out your pitching selections within a draft. (Bonus break music for all of you 1970s ABC sitcom aficionados.)](Double bonus: Listen to the very end to find out which one of us is, according to their spouse, giving "sexy grandpa.") Tout Wars draft results can be found here: https://www.fantrax.com/fantasy/league/rjolevt3mm4e0sv0/draft-resultsFlags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 339: Outfield Positional Preview

You think life is long, with endless opportunities that can always be postponed to a later date. And then you feel the cold breath of mortality on your neck and you find yourself drafting Dom Canzone as your third outfielder. Episode 338: Some Thoughts on Draft Strategy and the Closer Pool

Rather than go through the tiers of relief pitchers (yawn), we offer you a little intermezzo within our positional previews. We talk about the first 8 rounds of an NFBC Draft Champions league they are co-managing, highlighting the decisions they've made from the 15 spot (the notorious "wheel"). Then, we offer some more general, macro-level thoughts on drafting closers in an extremely volatile pool for 2026. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 6. 337

    Episode 337: Shortstop Positional Preview

We talk about the top-heavy talent pool at the six this week. If you don't grab one of the top six shortstops, you're probably OK. But if you wait until after pick 200, there's not nearly the depth that there is at second base. So be careful out there!Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 7. 336

Episode 336: Third Base Positional Preview

Tricky draft pool at third base this year. Beyond your obvious superstars (Ramírez, Caminero) it gets dicey, but there are a surprising number of players that give you more than just power. But, if it's power you want, we are both big Eugenio Suarez fans, particularly since he is going back to Cincinnati. Hopefully all that Skyline chili can keep him powered up! Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 8. 335

Episode 335: Second Base Positional Preview

Second base looks pretty barren at the top--only three players being drafted in the top 100!--but turns out to be a deep and diverse pool once you get beyond the first six or seven rounds. We look at players we are variously hot and cold on for 2026, and we talk strategy--particularly the pressure to draft a second baseman who can offer significant speed. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 9. 334

    Episode 334: Catcher Positional Preview

Catcher? Is interesting? For fantasy? Yes, it's true--it is a more interesting and varied position than in recent years, largely because the position has gotten much younger. Mike and Jon discuss whether (and which of) these young backstops are reason for excitement or caution. Also, a mild disagreement on Cal Raleigh, but we both think he's pretty awesome and should continue being awesome. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 10. 333

Episode 333: First Base Positional Preview

We are off and running with our 2026 positional previews, starting at first base. We talk about most of the cold corner performers that you are likely to draft this season, and we mostly (but not always!) agree. First base looks different than it did a decade or two ago (a 30-steal guy? really?) but is still one of the deeper positions in the fantasy landscape.Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 329: The My Bloody Valentine of Fantasy Baseball Podcasts

Hello strangers! After a two-month hiatus, Flags is back. I'm sure the anticipation was not nearly at the level of the follow-up to My Bloody Valentine's epochal 1991 release, Loveless, but Jon tortures that analogy anyway. We do a general check-in of things at the thirdway point of the season, zeroing on the starting pitching leaderboard, as well as discussing the many call-ups and how one might budget FAAB accordingly should you want to add one. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 15. 328

Episode 328: Starting Pitching Overview and Strategy

Instead of a granular, detailed look at the starting pitching tiers, we take a 50,000-foot view of the landscape, identifying three large "chunks" of the draft: the early rounds (1-6), the middle rounds (7-18), and the late rounds (19-end). We tackle some strategic questions, based on the latest ADP data from NFBC Main Event drafts (though what we discuss applies broadly to most leagues). We discuss how essential it is, now more than ever, to enter your draft or auction with a plan for starting pitching.Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 16. 327

Episode 327: LABR, WERF, and Outfield Preview, Chapter 2

Mike and Jon talk about two recent drafts they were in: Mike in the LABR Mixed Draft, and Jon in the WERF draft (one of the leagues in the overal EARTH competition). We make some observations about starters, relievers, and drafting speed. Then we get to the second half of our outfield preview, containing a lot of flawed but interesting bats. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 17. 326

Episode 326: Outfield Preview, Chapter 1

We get through the top 2.5 tiers of Mike's outfield rankings, spending a bit of time on the Ronald Acuña Dilemma. Elsewhere, we weigh in on the robust group of promising young outfielders in the five- and four-star tiers (Chourio! Duran! Merrill! Langford! Wood! Butler!), are back in again on Corbin Carroll, hopeful for a J-Rod bounceback, and remain impressed with Yordan Alvarez. In the top half of the three-star tier, there is considerably more risk, which leads us to sing the praises of "boring" options like Bryan Reynolds and Ian Happ. We are less excited about Pete Crow-Armstrong (though he does come from a pretty impressive high school), and hope that Mike Trout has one more healthy final act in his career, though we are not willing to pay 2025 prices.Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 18. 325

    Episode 325: Shortstop Preview

Finally, a position with some truly elite players! We discuss the relative merits of Gunnar and Elly in the first round, why Francisco Lindor and Trea Turner might be more similar than you think, if CJ Abrams has another level, and other topics du jour at the six.Plenty of flawed but intriguing options in the three-star tier, and then things fall of pretty quickly at the two-star tier and below. Jon and Mike pour multiple buckets of cold water on Trevor Story and Tyler Fitzgerald, respectively, and while we appreciate that Carlos Correa is still a good hitter, we just wish he would do it for a full (or even most of a) season. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 19. 324

    Episode 324: Third Base Preview

Like a fresh-baked pizza left in the snow, the corner known as third base starts pretty hot but cools down quickly. Do you like cold pizza? Then stick around to hear why we're concerned about Rafael Devers and Royce Lewis, and we're not buying any Nolan Arenado bounceback hype. Mike convinces Jon that Mark Vientos is for real and Jon (maybe) persuades mike about the underrated virtues of Alec Bohm. Jon makes a bold prediction about which Jung brother will be better in 2025 (hint: do you think we'd tease it if it were Josh?).Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 20. 323

    Episode 323: Second Base Preview

Mike and Jon would never police your keystone decisions (get it? Keystone Cops?) but we do take a deep dive into Mike's tiers at a position that is best described as "globular." Many of the top players are on downward-descending aging curves, and there's a pretty thick middle where you can find many flawed-but-interesting options. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 21. 322

    Episode 322: Catcher Preview

After some Very Important Weather Talk we dive into a position with both promise and disappointment (often embodied in the same player). We compare and contrast early-round young bucks Adley Rutschman and Yainer Díaz, debate what might be left in the tank for Sal Perez and J.T. Realmuto, identify an off-brand Cal Raleigh who might be better than the original, and comb through the lower tiers for players who might not totally fill you dread and sadness.Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. 22. 321

Episode 321: First Base (and DH) Preview

Welcome to preview season 2025! We begin our positional previews with a corner that is not just cold, but downright Arctic (at least before cliimate change melted all of the sea ice) past a certain point. We have mild disagreements about Matt Olson and Josh Naylor, and I beef with Fangraphs over their disrespect of the great metropolis of Sacramento, California. We share skepticism about Michael Toglia and Cody Bellinger and dive in the deep water to find some bargains in the one-star tier. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 320: 2024 Starting Pitcher Review

At last, we have gone through our positional reviews for 2024 (yeah, we skipped relievers, sorry), finishing up with starting pitchers. If aces didn't always ace, they at least held serve (Spencer Strider being the exception, sob). Some nice innings consumers in the next tier down, and the lower tiers had far more misses than hits.We refer to Mike's review article at BP, which you can find here: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/article/95769/2024-mixed-pitcher-valuations-recap/. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. We're back! Mike and Jon revisit Mike's preseason tiers to see just how the OF position stacked up in 2024. 27. 316

Episode 316: Main Event Victory Lap

We did it! In our very first try at the NFBC Main Event, we finished 121st out of 855 entries, which sounds mildly impressive at best. But more to the point, we won our league, completing a dramatic reversal of our early-season misfortunes (well documented in earlier episodes). After briefly patting ourselves on the back, we look at the 2024 season through the lens of our draft, our waiver pickups, and our in-season management. We make some overall observations about the strange run environment of 2024, and the particular quirks of the Main Event competition. Mike mentions his excellent BP article from June, "Even Rutherford B. Hayes Made History," which you can find here: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/article/91878/even-rutherford-b-hayes-made-history/Thanks, everyone, for listening during the 2024 fantasy season! 28. 315

Episode 315: Reviewing 2024 Draft Strategy

Everyone is already drafting (whether mock or real) for 2025, but we at Flags decide to look back at the board from 2024 and ponder some questions about the first round, about what happened to the elite starting pitchers (spoiler: they were pretty good, Spencer Strider aside, womp womp), about whether drafting elite closers was a good choice, and what types of roster construction seemed to work out. In spite of ourselves, there is more Corbin Carroll talk, and we introduce a new character to the Flags Fly Forever extended universe: one Gavin Sheets (or Gavin Sheetz, if you're from certain counties of the Keystone State). We had fun, and we hope you will, too.Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 314: Trade Deadline Fallout

Since the last podcast, a lot has happened in the world. One of things that hasn't happened is the White Sox winning a single game.Today we avoid current events to discuss some fallout from the trade deadline, with quite a bit of attention to the closer landscape for the rest of the season. Also, we make some more general observations about a deadline that was low-key interesting, even without a lot of stars moving teams. And the podcast ends with a brief mention of the most Giant player who has never played for the Giants until now.Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 313: More Patience than Axl Rose

Hey, it's (just past) the middle of the season, so Mike and Jon talk a bit about how patience with slow starters and consistent FAABing have worked wonders for their suddenly-halfway-decent Main Event squad. Then we dive into Mike's midseason valuations, which you can find here: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/article/92181/midseason-fantasy-valuation-update-2024/Sure, the pitching landscape looks weird but--guess what?--it does every year at midseason. Episode 312: History Lesson (with Larry Schechter)

We have a conversation with Larry Schechter, fantasy legend and author of the new book, The History of Fantasy Sports. We talk about how the history of fantasy baseball is more complex than you might think, some of the people and personalities that led us to where the game is today, and where it might go in the future. You can find Larry's book at all of the usual online purveyors, though if you'd like to support local bookstores you can order it here: https://bookshop.org/search?keywords=larry+schechter. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 311: Midseason and Midlife Conversations (with Jeff Erickson)

Mike and Jon welcome Rotowire's Jeff Erickson for a free-range conversation centering on our midseason process, specifically as it relates to player evaluation, the timing of cuts and adds, roster management, FAAB strategy, and how we balance our time spent on baseball with, you know, living our lives. We start off with a little DadCast(tm) conversation before getting down to baseball stuff. You can find Jeff's work at www.rotowire.com, on many Rotowire podcasts, and on the Sirius/XM Fantasy channel. Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 310: Valuing Players At The End of May

Mike and Jon talk about the tragicomic Mets, the utility of rolling three-week samples, not holding too tightly to fast starters who slow down, and then we conclude with a little game where we discuss players whose rest-of-season value has changed the most, for better or worse. 34. 309

Episode 309: Talking about Texts about Baseball

What to talk about as the MLB season rounds the first-month post? Well, Mike and Jon text regularly about many things--and a good portion of those are baseball-related. So we looked at a few text exchanges we've had over the last couple of weeks and continued the conversation "in person," as it were.Topics included:- how can we "plant flags" for early-round players that we value when we are inundated by the groupthink of ADP? (or, should Zack Wheeler have been a first-round pick?)- why does the three-week sample at the beginning of the season hold sway over our minds and player evalutions long after those hot or cold starts have ended? (or, why do you still feel bad about Francisco Lindor when you should feel bad about Matt Olson?)- it's a wacky ERA leaderboard! Is this small-sample nonsense or is the SP landscape changing? It's a freewheeling grab-bag of a conversation, hope you enjoy!Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 308: Three Men in Action Park (with Grey Albright)

We kick the ass of April doldrums with the help of our Very Special Guest, the one and only Grey Albright of Razzball and ostentatious eyewear fame. After some desultory baseball discussion we talk about New Jersey's favorite defunct libertarian tourist attraction and torture park--I speak, of course, of Action Park! 36. 307

    Episode 307: The Cruelest Month

We're getting all T.S. Eliot on you, because for us, and for fantasy basebal content, April is kind of a dead zone. Rather than overreact to fast and slow starts, we discuss some process points in evaluating your early-season roster and negotiating FAAB at this time of year. We do this through the lens of our own underperforming Main Event team (at what point does "underperforming" just become "bad"? hopefully we won't have to answer this!). Also, find out who the player is that was inexplicably dropped in our league and our approach to FAABing for him. Episode 306: The Gang Does A Main Event

Hey, it's actual baseball season! After the whirlwind of positional previews and draft discussion, we put a cap on the 2024 draft season by discussing the NFBC Main Event team that Mike and Jon drafted. It was the first time either of us had participated in a Main Event, and we talk about our decision to ante up, our overall strategy, our focused strategy once we knew where we were drafting (7th), and our experience in the draft (fast and furious). While our team is off to a, ahem, slow start, we remain optimistic that good things will happen! (Watch this space for updates.)Before our Main Event discussion, we discuss a couple of players who could prove disappointments--Esteury Ruiz, having been sent down, and Evan Carter, having not yet learned how to hit left-handed pitching (and thus in danger of losing playing time). Beyond these specific players, we are reminded that sometimes real baseball can influence fantasy baseball in unpredictable and inconvenient ways.Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 305: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Auctions (But Were Afraid to Ask)

We take the occasion of the recent Tout Wars auction weekend to do a deep dive on auctions--what we prefer, how we prepare, and some strategies and advice for those new to the format. We love auctions! In this episode we discuss:Why in-person auctions are so fun and rewardingHow preparation and strategy are different than a draftWhy you should have a Plan A and a Plan B (and possibly a Plan C)The risks and rewards of price enforcementHow to handle the endgameThat One Time Mike Had a Perfect AuctionWe also talk about the Tout Wars NL-Only League, where friend of the show Grey Albright of Razzball completely avoided starting pitchers (a gambit attributed to Mike and Doug Dennis that in fact goes back to the early days of fantasy baseball). We conclude with a discussion of how Mike reallocates values in his bid limits when players get injured (Gerrit Cole, Devin Williams) or suspended (Noelvi Marte). All in all, a pretty nerdy episode. Episode 304: Tout Mixed Review + SP Strategy + Using Bid Limits

Bit of a mixed bag this week:We review Mike's Tout Wars Mixed League draft from earlier in the week. (You can see the draft board here: https://www.fantrax.com/fantasy/league/1ojcq64zltc8i9la/draft-results)We talk (again) about your strategy for drafting starting pitchers, and why Mike generally avoids the "blob" of mid-tier starters. We also introduce Mike's auction bid limits and discuss how to use them, and how not to use them. Finally, we talk about the risk of players who have not yet made their MLB debut, focusing in on three names for this draft season: Jackson Chourio, Wyatt Langford, and Jackson Holliday.Flags Fly Forever is a Baseball Prospectus podcast. Episode 303: Outfield Positional Preview

We talk outfielders this week, and given the size of the position, we did more of a strategy overview than deep dives on indivdual players. It's an interesting year at the position--great, five-category options up top but a fairly long tail of useful players deep into the 200s, and beyond. Episode 302: Reviewing the LABR Mixed Draft

We step away from our positional previews to discuss the LABR Mixed League draft, which Mike took part in on Tuesday, February 20. We talk about the difference between stand-alone leagues and larger multi-league competitions, strategies for the first four rounds, how to respond to early spring training injury news, building drafts around your starting pitching strategy, what to do when closers get pushed up, and so much more. (I would like to apologize to Nick Martinez for my unkind comment around the 39-minute mark. I'm sure you're a fun guy.)(And I would also like to apologize for my sound quality. Episode 296: Now With 100% More Baseball

Oh hi there. How have you been? We've been fine, thanks for asking. If you want to hear about baseball, this is the episode for you. There's a lot of discussion about fantasy off the top, specifically evaluation in hindsight. Real nitty gritty stuff if you're into that. If you're not, fear not! It then diverges into a discussion of the upcoming ALCS...sorta. One member of the team has lost their faith in their club, and wants to publicly opine about it. That splinters off several times. In conclusion, baseball is a land of contrasts. Thank you.Got a content idea for the show? Episode 295: Do You Know Where Your LA Angels Are?

There's an amount of baseball on this episode that should probably be described as "surprising." In what direction is up to you, the listener, to discover. We start with a game based around the revolving door of mediocrity that is the Los Angeles Angels. We live watch the Alex Cobb almost near no hitter (spoiler alert even though it was 3 days ago?). We also do our best to jinx Jon's TGFBI status, even though there is no such thing as a jinx ever. Got a content idea for the show? Oh hi, dear listener. It's been a moment, we've all been busy and baseball has baseball'ed in 2023. But we do have a show for you that has a...select amount of baseball discussion. We also talk about food a lot, travelling, and Jon ends the show with a wonderful fatherhood based anecdote. We're having fun, so we hope you have fun as well.Got a content idea for the show? Episode 293: Baseball Makes A Cameo

Oh hi there. You doing alright? Making sure to drink water and take your medicine? Good, good. We're proud of you for that self care. Anyway, so MLB really has the show down again this week because somehow it only seems to be getting worse. Maybe it'll get better soon, who can say? We sure can't, because it all looks awful. As a result, we ended up doing something really odd on this episode. We went through Cameo looking for baseball players to record new intros for us. It turns into a pseudo game, but you'd be forgiven if it's the musings of three relatively depressed people looking for joy in a grayscale morose of sludge passing for a major sports league. We're doing our best starshine, and hope you are too. Got a content idea for the show?
