Trip-hop is a subgenre of electronic music that uses the beat template of hip-hop – drum loops and samples – with elements of jazz, lounge, ambient, and dub. There are some usual suspects in this tracklist like Massive Attack, Portishead, and Nightmares on Wax. But in preparing the mix we found many masters of the form whose names were blasts from the past or brand new: Funki Porcini, Howie B., DJ KRUSH, A Forest Mighty Black, Neotropic... There are some borderline cases like Air, Bowery Electric, and Pete Rock (whose influence on trip-hop was huge). The mix is almost entirely instrumental, but because it’s trip-hop it was hard to avoid the occasional scratched vocal or random sung melodies. Today’s mix is selections from the discography of DJmegan23, an electronic musician based in Los Angeles. She fuses all kinds of music together: video game soundtracks, trap, ambient, jersey club, vaporwave… Her latest EP is Good Luck, Megan! Today we have a guest mix from Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, an American composer from the Pacific Northwest now based in Los Angeles. Her new album, Thoughts on the Future, comes out this Friday and about which she wrote, “This composition is shaped by loss, written with the quiet intention of holding someone through the unholdable.” We premiere that album here, and the rest of the mix is Smith’s hand-picked tracks that influenced it. The influential artists include many pianists, including Nils Frahm, Dustin O’Halloran, Ólafur Arnalds, Hania Rani, and Chilly Gonzales. Several Philip Glass pieces appear, performed twice by Bruce Brubaker. There’s a chamber rendition of Aphex Twin’s “Avril 14th” by Daniel Hope et al.
