The Anatomy of Sin and the Mercy of God

Just as God promised in Genesis 3:15, the serpent crushing Seed of the woman has finally come to redeem and restore His people. The birth of Jesus is the beginning of God's promises being fulfilled, for by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus He will save his people from the condemnation their sin placed them under. This Seed will crush His enemies under His feet as He leads sin's captives into the Father's holy presence.

Though all was created good, the serpent sought to reverse Yahweh's ordered creation by questioning His word and deceiving the woman. In this one act of the serpent's, the woman and Adam disobeyed Yahweh's command and all of creation fell into sin. Through the serpent's crafty words, the woman and Adam realized they were naked and became ashamed, seeking to cover up that which only Yahweh himself can atone.

After placing Adam in the garden, Yahweh creates for him, out of his side, a helper fit for him: Woman. This woman is bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh, and thus marriage was born into the world. A beautiful gift which ultimately points forward to the relationship God himself establishes with his church.

In celebrating FBC's first full year, we praise God for his faithfulness, the same faithfulness — seen clearly in Acts 11 — He has always shown His church.

After creating man and Eden, Yahweh places the man in the garden so that he might cultivate and keep it, just as the priests would later do for the tabernacle and temple. And within this restful place of work, Yahweh declares his provision, yet also states that the man must not eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil—if he does, he will die. Thus we see Yahweh placing man within His midst with purpose (Gen 1:16-18) and boundaries. Obedience leads to life in Yahweh's presence; disobedience leads to death outside of Yahweh's presence.

Mike McCoy steps into the pulpit this week to preach on Psalm 127 and God's plan for kingdom growth. Just as Solomon built a house for Yahweh and for himself, so he claims that all labor is vain unless Yahweh does the building. Indeed, unless Yahweh builds the house and blesses it with children, they labor in vain who attempt to build their own houses—they who try to build their own kingdoms outside of Yahweh's promises and blessing.

This week pastor Zach begins walking through the first chapter of Jonah where we see Jonah refuse Yahweh's command, go down to Joppa, and go down into a ship, fleeing Yahweh's very presence. In this irony-filled book, we begin to see how all things obey Yahweh, save his own prophet.

When Yahweh formed man from the dust and breathed the breath of life into him, He planted a garden and place the man there. The garden, set upon a mountain with flowing streams of water coming forth, had every tree which is good for food, including the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The garden that Yahweh planted was abundant in life, for it is where He himself dwelt with man.

And on the final day, God rested with His creation. Indeed, this rest is the culmination of His efforts, for God created the world with this day in mind, seeking to rest with His creation - especially His image-bearers. After the fall, Yahweh works through all of redemptive history to bring His own back into His presence so that He might rest with them forever.

This week, pastor Ben Erickson from Barton Church visits and walks through Paul's closing remarks in 2 Thessalonians. As Paul exhorts the Thessalonians to not follow after the world, he includes disciplined work as a feature which characterizes such separation. If indeed there are any who are unruly and idle, not working so as to provide for themselves and others, then they are to be admonished as a brother so that they might learn to honor the Lord through work. Within all of this, Paul encourages all of them not to lose heart in doing good.

On the sixth day of creation, God filled the land he created on the third day first with creatures according to their kinds. Finally, as the pinnacle and vice-regent of His creation, God created man in His own image. Man's duty was to have dominion over creation, to subdue it, and to be fruitful and multiply over the face of the earth, spreading God's image over all creation.

On the fifth day of creation, God fills what he created on day two with animals. Each was created according to its own kind, again portraying the order of God's creation. Thus God not only proves his complete sovereignty over the creatures of the earth, but also his wisdom in structuring a world devoid of chaos.

On day four of creation, God created the heavenly lights to rule the day and the night. These lights govern all of God's creation - the heavens and the earth he created on day one. Throughout Scripture we are constantly pointed back to the lights which rule as a sign of the Light that is to come and save through judgment.

As we see God create both the sea and the dry land, we stand in awe not only at his creative power but also at his sovereign will in redemption. For just as Moses here depicts God's power, he simultaneously introduces us to God's wisdom in producing life and fruit on the third day, signaling to the first fruits of the new creation which will be wrought in Christ.

In day two of creation, God creates an expanse, separating the waters above from the waters below. What we see at the very beginning is that God created with purposeful design, with a structure in mind. These initial verses prove why the heavens above do indeed declare the glory of God (Psalm 8:1).

In the beginning, God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God separated the light from the darkness and called it good, thereby formulating judgment not only over what is and is not, but also over what is good and what is not good. In this way, God manifested his power over all creation, both corporeal and incorporeal.

In the beginning, God created everything. Not only did he create everything ex nihilo, but he set in motion his plan for creation, namely, its purpose in glorifying His Name. Just as well, God creates for the purpose of dwelling with His creation, seen most clearly in temple-garden of Eden where He walks with his image-bearers.

Join us as Pastor Jason introduces a sermon series on Genesis 1-11 where Moses tells of the creation of the world, its fall into sin, and God's plan of restoration and redemption. The creation of the world sets the stage for God's wonderous plan, so understanding these first chapters thus becomes key to understanding the rest of Scripture.

As all eventually come to know, life consists of suffering, both small and great. James, in writing to the early church, speaks of the purpose God has for suffering in the life of the Christian. Those who follow Christ are to count it all joy when facing trials, knowing that the Giver of all good gifts is using such suffering to produce in them steadfastness and wisdom.

In 2 Corinthians 7:9-11, Paul outlines two types of grief—godly and worldly—which this week Zach Canjar applies to the events of David's life in 2 Samuel 11-12. It is here that David sins grievously but, once rebuked, grieves righteously over his sin against the Lord.

This week, Jason Evans visits from Pleasant Home Community Church to preach from Acts 20 where Paul says his farewells to the Ephesian elders. In these parting words Paul calls them to follow his example, to pay careful attention to their flock and the wolves that will come among them, and commends them to God and His Word for the work ahead.

Paul concludes his letter by commanding the Ephesians to pray at all times, being alert not only for their own needs but also for all the saints. He also tells them that he is sending Tychicus to them so that they might know more about Paul's affairs, and so that they might be encouraged. Just as he began the letter, and as he described in full throughout, he declares grace and peace to them with incorruptible love through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul finishes describing the final pieces of God's armor that the church is to be equipped with: the boots, the shield, the helmet, and the sword. First, the boots are equipped so that the church might herald the gospel. Faith is the church's shield, used to dispose of the enemy's evil devices. The salvation wrought by Christ is to adorn the head of his people as a helmet, again protecting them from the enemy. Lastly, the Word of God is to be equipped as a sword whose sole purpose is to enlighten the hearts of God's people with the truth so that they might ward off the lies of the enemy. This armor heralds God's glorious gospel while simultaneously defending it against God's enemies—so stand firm!

Having called his readers to stand firm, Paul here begins to explain with what they are to stand firm with, namely, the armor of God. It is not by accident that the first piece named is the belt of truth and subsequently the breastplate of righteousness, for adherence to the truth of Christ necessarily leads to righteousness, as Paul has previously explained. Furthermore, these pieces of armor were first worn by Christ, who is himself the truth and the divine warrior. In this way, Paul calls his readers to put on Christlikeness.

This week, Jason Mills walks through Exodus 2 where, after Pharoah placed the Israelites in bondage and commanded that all of the sons born to them be killed after birth, the mother of Moses, in faith, places him in an ark in the river to be saved from the onslaught. Yahweh uses her and the subsequent intercession of Pharoah's daughter to save Moses. It is in this story that we see God's faithfulness to His people—His love for and sovereignty over their very lives. In this same way, we ought to emulate God's great care for life.

In closing out his letter, Paul begins to speak here of the armor of God and its intended purpose for the church. Each member of the body is commanded to take up God's armor and to stand firm against God's enemy, preparing for the evil which seeks to destroy that which Christ has built.

This week, Mike Johnston walks through the first verses of 1 John 3 where John speaks of the love that God has for His children. It is in this love that His children hope, purifying themselves according to the pure nature of their heavenly Father, awaiting the day they will see Him face-to-face.

Continuing in his section on home life, Paul here speaks of the relationship between master and servant, following the same authority and submission theme from the two prior pericopes. Paul's concern is that both master and servant obey the Lord and so treat one another accordingly, not as people-pleasers or authority-abusers, but understanding that they both have an even greater master, namely, Jesus Christ.

Continuing in commandments related to the home, Paul begins chapter six of Ephesians by telling children to obey their parents, and telling father's to not provoke their children but to raise them in godliness. Paul's concern is that children learn to obey God by obeying their parents, which thereby blesses them. In light of this, fathers are to train their children in such a way that guides them toward this obedience.

Commonly known as the saddest psalm in the entire Psalter, Psalm 88 is a song of utter lament. Lost in sorrow and suffering, Heman cries out to God, asking why the Lord has abandoned him in his time of need, yet all the while knowing that Yahweh is indeed the God of his salvation.

In directly applying the call to walk wisely and to submit to one another, Paul begins to speak of the home with its authority and submission structures. First, he commands that wives submit to their own husbands, and that husbands love their wives as Christ loved the church.

As Paul continues offering practical exhortations for the Ephesians, he ends this section by calling them to be wise and filled with the Spirit rather than foolish and filled with wine. Conducting themselves in this way, they are to sing songs to one another, to constantly give thanks to God for all He has done for them in Jesus, and to submit to one another in an orderly fashion out of reverence for Christ.
