He had a rough start with being denied from college 3 times, and struggling to upstart his most successful business for years named Alibaba. In the podcast, I mainly explain the values and disciplines that kept Jack in line when forming his company. Something else that Jack talks about is how to maintain a successful business, and some of the other values such as having emotional intelligence and learning how to turn your failures into lessons to grow from.

This episode of the podcast collection, we will be interviewing a small boutique owner Catherine. She was inspired by her grandfather who opened a hardware store after he returned from WWII. She always knew she wanted to give back to the community after seeing how her father and grandfather had been helping people in their business for so many years. She wanted to create a team that would help her achieve her goals of owning her own business. Monkees is a small boutique located in downtown Fredericksburg and she is the buyer/owner of this store. Our questions will mainly focus on how she was inspired to be the owner of Monkees and what shaped her to have a drive as an entrepreneur and business owner.

For my first podcast, I chose to interview my friend and former coworker, Riley Burzynski. She is the owner of two small businesses located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She firstly is a licensed Cosmetologist, and operates independently within a salon suite. She also creates handmade artwork and home decor and sells it in retail shops in Downtown Fredericksburg, and at pop-up events around Northern Virginia. She has owned these businesses for over three years and has slowly been expanding her workspace and clientele. She illustrates the many layers of being an independent hairstylist, and the lifestyle adjustments she faces as her hand-crafted homegoods gain demand.

Rene Smits: From Dutch Welder to American Business Owner
In this episode, I share the inspiring journey of my dad, Rene Smits, the founder of Smits International. Originally from the Netherlands, he began welding at just 16 years old where he mastered advanced welding techniques used on large ships. After graduation, he started working across Europe building greenhouses and leading crews at a young age. One day, he was offered a short-term job in Virginia. However, his skill and work ethic impressed a major greenhouse owner, who encouraged him to start his own company in the United States - despite not speaking English at the time. So Rene did just that - he started his own business and through hard work, word of mouth, and commitment to quality, Rene’s reputation was able to spread nationwide across the greenhouse businesses.

Echo Chocolate: From Childhood Passion to Award Winning Chocolatier
We had the pleasure of interviewing UMW’s softball pitching coach, Coach Echo, as she gave us a deep dive into her chocolate business. Echo has always had a love for chocolate, and turned her passion into profit, with Echo Chocolate opening in 2016. Echo shared her favorite moments as an entrepreneur, as well as some moments where she was not as confident with herself, painting a clear picture of ups and downs as a business owner. Business was booming! So much so, it was overwhelming as a solo chocolatier. Currently, her business is temporarily closed; however, she plans to reopen with reinforcements in the future. Coach Echo’s words for future entrepreneurs is to surround yourself with supportive, and honest people. She encourages others to “just go for it”, and “fail forward.” We loved the opportunity to take a look at the behind the scenes of being a chocolatier and entrepreneur.

In this episode, I went to Barley Naked Brewery in Stafford VA to interview Barry Boyd, a 29-year retired Coast Guard Veteran. I asked him about “why” a brewery in the first place? We discussed his first venture with partners and the lessons he learned along the way. Honoring promises made to his investors allowed him to start up again years later after the initial partnership didn’t work out. Barry gives potential entrepreneurs advice on the correct mindset to have when starting your business as well as the importance of having a financial advisor/accountant. At just 19, he started Gymshark in his garage with a sewing machine and a dream. Gymshark blew up after a fitness expo, and Ben dropped out of university to go all in. What makes his story so cool is that he built a community, not just a clothing line. He focused on helping people feel confident and motivated to grow. Even after Gymshark became huge, Ben stayed humble and gave credit to his team. In 2023, he was awarded an MBE for his impact on business. His story proves that you don’t need to be rich or famous to succeed, you need passion, purpose, and hustle.
