Episode 3- The Ninth Plague: When Darkness Enters our Soul
Rabbi Lisa Eiduson's sermon from Friday, January 23, 2026The Ten Plagues were more than just “punishments” designed to persuade Pharaoh and his people to set the Children of Israel free from Egyptian bondage. In addition to the literal meanings of the plague, each plague is also associated with metaphorical significance that helps shed light not just on ancient times but on our own day as well. This sermon focuses on the ninth of the Ten Plagues – the Plague of Darkness. For the Egyptians, the plague of darkness was experienced as the total absence of sight and vision, but it also came to represent a dearth of insight on their part as well. As such, the darkness of the ninth plague penetrated the outer and inner worlds of the Egyptians. Their world was shrouded in a deep darkness of the soul that left each of them alone - without empathy and with no compassion or care for the other.
