The Under-Rateds
Send us Fan MailComic books are not just about key issues and epic storylines. Sometimes there are those series that are solid reads yet unfortunately have fallen through the cracks of the general comics fandom. The G3eks team suggests some “under-rated” comic book gems that might become reader favorites if they come across them. BONUS: A ten-minute pre-show conversation about comic books in general starts the episode. RE-Read: The Judas Contract
Send us Fan MailDC Comics’ “The Judas Contract” (New Teen Titans #42-44, Annual #3) has long been considered one of the greatest super-hero comic book stories of all-time. So just what is it about this story that generates such a passionate response? Are readers missing more to the story if they only read the trade collection? Have plot and character controversies dimmed its power today? What do Dick Grayson and Tom Cruise have in common? It’s time for a Re-Read from the G3eks crew. Join our “comic book club” for a spoiler-filled discussion about this far-reaching and influential story and whether it truly deserves its classic status. Better Draw: The Writing or The Art?
Send us Fan Mail“What I can do is sell a comic drawn by Michelangelo and written by my dog, but what I cannot do is sell a book written by William Shakespeare but drawn by my mom.” The quote from a Todd McFarlane interview recently resurfaced on the Internet. Is that sentiment still relevant? What is the driving force behind comic book experience—the writing or the art? Are people under-selling the writing talents of McFarlane’s dog? The G3eks team gives their analysis and answers to these four-color questions. Send us Fan MailThis double-sized episode is devoted to those wide variety of comic book titles published outside the realm of Marvel and DC—the indies! We’re picking our favorite indie titles and creators from yesteryear and today…and even looking at what elements make up the perfect indie comic book for each one of our co-hosts. Send us Fan MailWait for the trade collection? But what type of trade—an omnibus or multiple volumes? Hardcover or paperback? Remastered or left alone? Are there advantages to sticking instead with single issues (don’t say “floppies” ‘round these parts)? What comic book titles would we like to see eventually put together in a trade collection? The G3eks team “trades” their views on these topics and more. (01:06:10)Theme Music: “We Need a Superhero.” Music by Geoff Harvey from Pixabay.Let's G3eks Speak! https://www.facebook.com/g3ektacular

Ep. 39: Let’s Talk About Kolchak
Send us Fan MailThe intrepid G3eks team remembers the character of Carl Kolchak, the dogged ’70s-era newspaper reporter created by reporter/author Jeff Rice and portrayed by Darren (“A Christmas Story”) McGavin. Kolchak investigated and defeated a variety of supernatural creatures across a couple of TV movies, a 20-episode series (and an ill-fated reboot), novels, and even comic books. But what makes Kolchak memorable (although the character is today largely forgotten by mass fandom), inspiring later similar series such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Supernatural,” “The X-Files” and more? What are some of his best stories? Why didn’t the character make a bigger splash in comic books? We’re recording our thoughts on this property for fans and potential fans to ponder.
