#44b Níos Éasca: An Cogadh Óipiam, Ceapairí Criospaí agus "die Eingewöhnung" (GA-EN)
In this episode of GTL, I start with The Opium War by Julia Lovell, a book about the first Opium War between Britain and China. From there, I take a slightly strange journey through Erasmus, football, memories from childhood, crisp sandwiches, and, eventually, something called “die Eingewöhnung” in Germany - the process a child goes through when starting nursery.A few different threads, then, as I think about how we learn about other people and places - and how much we don't understand until we find ourselves on the other side.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________San Eagrán seo de GTL, tosaím le The Opium War, leabhar faoi chogadh idir an Bhreatain agus an tSín. Ón áit sin, téim ar aistear beagáinín aisteach trí Erasmus, sacar, cuimhní ó m’óige, ceapairí criospaí agus, ar deireadh, rud ar a dtugtar “die Eingewöhnung” sa Ghearmáin - an próiseas a théann páiste tríd agus é nó í ag tosú i naíonra.Cúpla snáithe éagsúla, mar sin, agus mé ag smaoineamh ar an gcaoi a bhfoghlaimímid faoi dhaoine agus faoi áiteanna eile - agus ar an méid nach dtuigimid go dtí go mbímid féin ar an taobh eile. In this episode of GTL, I start with The Odyssey, the new film by Christopher Nolan - a story about coming home, which I saw just after making my own journey home. But something was missing. From there, I think about coming home, memory, and the places and people we leave behind - and the new memories we are creating now.An episode about coming home, about the person you were and the person you are now, and about the question every odyssey, great or small, leaves behind: what changes, and what stays the same, along the way?____________________________________________________________________________________________________________San Eagrán seo de GTL, tosaím le The Odyssey, an scannán nua le Christopher Nolan - scéal faoi theacht abhaile, a chonaic mé díreach tar éis dom mo bhealach féin a dhéanamh abhaile. Ach bhí rud éigin in easnamh.Ón áit sin, smaoiním ar theacht abhaile, ar chuimhne, agus ar na háiteanna agus na daoine a fhágann muid inár ndiaidh - agus ar na cuimhní nua atá á gcruthú againn anois.Eagrán faoi theacht abhaile, faoin duine a bhí tú agus faoin duine atá tú anois, agus faoin gceist a fhágann gach odaisé, mór nó beag, ina diaidh: cad a athraíonn, agus cad a fhanann mar an gcéanna, i rith an turais? #42 Níos Éasca: Seacht mBliana i ndiaidh GOT | Seven Years after "Game of Thrones" Part 2 - GA-EN
In Part Two, we arrive at the end - and at the verdict. It is April 2019, and I have just moved to Bonn. Season Eight is airing week by week, and every Monday, while my girlfriend is at work, I am on the sofa with my NowTV pass, going back to Westeros one last time. What I thought of what I found there - and why - is what this episode is about. We talk about Season Eight, about where it went wrong, and when the cracks actually started. About rewatchability, about what a bad ending does to everything that came before it. And about what made GOT genuinely unique - a collective experience that only happens once, and that no amount of disappointment can fully undo. This episode was originally released in Irish in May. I had the script ready, and as I am taking a summer break, I thought it was a good opportunity to release the bilingual version for anyone who enjoys a little English alongside the Irish. I am hoping to be back in September with new episodes. In the meantime, grab a cup of tea and come along for the final chapter.___________________________________________________________________________________________________Sa dara cuid seo, tagaimid go dtí an deireadh - agus go dtí an bhreithiúnas.Tá sé Aibreán 2019 agus táim díreach tar éis bogadh go Bonn. Tá séasúr 8 ag teacht amach seachtain ar sheachtain, agus gach Luan agus mo chailín ag an obair, bím ar an tolg le mo NowTV pass, ag filleadh ar Westeros den uair dheireanach. Cad a cheap mé de cad a fuair mé ann - agus cén fáth - sin an méid atá san eagrán seo.Labhraímid faoi shéasúr 8, faoi cá ndeachaigh sé mícheart agus cathain a thosaigh na cracks i ndáiríre. Faoin rewatchability, faoi cad a dhéanann deireadh olc le gach rud a tháinig roimhe. Agus faoin rud a rinne GOT uathúil i ndáiríre - eispéireas comhchoiteann nach dtarlaíonn ach uair amháin, agus nach féidir le díomá ar bith a chur ar ceal go hiomlán.Eisíodh an eagrán seo as Gaeilge amháin i mí na Bealtaine. Bhí an script réidh agam agus, ós rud é go bhfuil sos samhraidh á ghlacadh agam, shíl mé gur deis mhaith a bheadh ann an leagan dátheangach a chur amach dóibh siúd ar maith leo beagán Béarla fite fuaite leis an nGaeilge. Tá súil agam a bheith ar ais i mí Mheán Fómhair le heagrán nua. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

#41 Níos Éasca: Seacht mBliana i ndiaidh GOT | Seven Years after "Game of Thrones" Part 1 - GA-EN
Seven years after the end of Game of Thrones, I'm revisiting this essay - this time as a Níos Éasca bilingual (Irish-English) episode.I'm currently spending some time back home in Ireland with my family, and it felt like a good opportunity to share this bilingual version with new listeners and with anyone who enjoys having a little English alongside the Irish. In Part One, I return to where it all began — from the first books I read in Cork to the television series that became a defining part of my twenties. It's a personal reflection on the world of Westeros and the characters that shaped conversations, friendships, and different chapters of life. So, grab a cup of tea, take the dog for a walk, and come along for the journey.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Seacht mbliana tar éis deireadh Game of Thrones, filleann mé ar an aiste seo arís — an uair seo mar eipeasóid Níos Éasca (Gaeilge agus Béarla).Táim ar saoire sa bhaile in Éirinn le mo chlann faoi láthair, agus shíl mé gur deis mhaith a bheadh ann an leagan dátheangach seo a roinnt le héisteoirí nua, nó leo siúd ar fearr leo beagán Béarla fite fuaite leis an nGaeilge.Sa chéad chuid seo, téim siar go dtí an tús — ó na chéad leabhair a léigh mé i gCorcaigh, go dtí an tsraith teilifíse a tháinig chun bheith ina cuid mhór de mo shaol sna fichidí. Seo machnamh pearsanta ar dhomhan Westeros agus ar na carachtair a mhúnlaigh comhráite, cairdis agus tréimhsí éagsúla den saol.Mar sin, faigh cupán tae, téigh amach ag siúl, agus tar liom ar an turas seo. #40b Níos Éasca: Greatness
What does "greatness" mean? The answer is not as simple as you might think. In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, I follow one thread from the All-Ireland Championship... through the World Cup... to the Tour de France... from Joe Canning to Tadej Pogacar... and eventually to a question with no simple answer. An episode about memory, about time, and about the person you were when you witnessed greatness. About why it is objective and subjective and everything in between — and about the uncomfortable questions that sometimes come with it.Post-Production NotesThis episode falls in a weird space where the story came to me and was then developed (pulled at) at the start of July and then written down over a couple of days... the episode itself took a while to record - again over maybe three or four days - so yes, this easily could have explored "Mayo 4 Sam", Limerick hurlers in more detail, more on the World Cup, and more with Tadej and the Tour. Those are the difficulties when writing and responding to "current" events, while also "bulk recording"...The idea with Tadej is that he has been truly exceptional - a bolt from the blue - since the very start of his career, whereas typically in the history of cheats they take some time to fall into that pattern - riders have said it takes "1000 days of losing" before you resort to the "dark arts" - so three years - in comparison, Pogacar won his first Tour in 2020 in his second professional season as a 21 year old... Furthermore, he races and wins everything throughout the year - from February to October - typically dopers would have downtime to get their blood bags, etc., organised - he does not follow that pattern. I do not think I outlined it all that well when I listened back to the pod, so hopefully this explainer makes it a bit clearer.Aspects of this could have been improved and explained better - the thread is not perfect - but I thought it was better to get it out there rather than endless rewrites.... so it is not perfect, but sure what is?Anyway, I hope ye enjoy this one.________________________________________________________________________________________________Cad is brí le "greatness"? Ní hé an freagra atá chomh simplí agus a cheapfá. San eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, lean mé snáth amháin ó Chraobh na hÉireann... tríd an gCorn na Domhanda... go dtí an Tour de France... ó Joe Canning go dtí Tadej Pogacar... agus ar deireadh go dtí ceist nach bhfuil freagra simplí uirthi. Is eagrán é faoi chuimhne, faoin am, agus faoin duine a bhí tú nuair a chonaic tú greatness. Faoin difríocht idir í a fheiceáil agus í a mhothú — agus nach ionann an dá rud i gcónaí. Agus faoi na ceisteanna crua a thagann léi uaireanta. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

#39b Níos Éasca: Roimh an Titim
There was something about the 2000s. I cannot quite name it - but you knew it when you were in it. A shared language. A clear image of what it meant to be young. A world that felt like it was going in one direction. And then, slowly and surely, it was gone.In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, I am thinking about that world - about what was there, about what went with it. And about the strange feeling that comes when the algorithm returns something to you that you were not looking for._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________Bhí rud éigin ann sna 2000í. Ní féidir liom ainm cruinn a chur air — ach bhí a fhios agat nuair a bhí tú ann. Teanga chomhroinnte. Íomhá shoiléir de cad a bhí i gceist le bheith óg. Domhan a bhí ag dul i dtreo amháin.Agus ansin, go mall agus go cinnte, d'imigh sé.San eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, táim ag smaoineamh ar an domhan sin — ar cad a bhí ann, ar cad a d'imigh leis. Agus ar an mothúchán aisteach a thagann nuair a chuireann an algorithm rud ar ais os do chomhair nach raibh tú ag lorg. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

#38 Caoimhín Mac Uilín | Londain | Cill Chainnigh | Rí Rá agus Rith
San eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, labhraím le Caoimhín Mac Uilín ó Chill Chainnigh, atá anois lonnaithe i Londain. Is é Caoimhín bunaitheoir an chlub reatha Rí Rá agus Rith, tionscnamh a thugann deis do Ghaeilgeoirí sa chathair teacht le chéile, dul ag rith agus an Ghaeilge a úsáid i suíomh sóisialta agus gníomhach.Pléimid bunús an smaoinimh, cé atá páirteach ann agus conas atá an club ag fás. Labhraímid freisin faoin tionchar a bhí ag an gclub CLG Gaeilge Na Gaeil Óga i mBaile Átha Cliath air agus é ina mhac léinn, agus mar a spreag an taithí sin é chun pobal Gaeilge dá chuid féin a chruthú i Londain.Tagann an comhrá ar a chuid maratón freisin, lena n-áirítear an scéal faoin ngeansaí O’Neills gan choinne a chabhraigh leis na ciliméadair dheireanacha a shárú. Déanaimid machnamh chomh maith ar an gcaoi a bhféadann siúl agus rith trí chathair léargas nua a thabhairt ar stair, ar charachtar agus ar scéalta ceilte na háite.Thosaigh an comhrá seo tar éis dom postáil ó Chaoimhín a fheiceáil ar Cogar faoi Rí Rá agus Rith, agus bhí orm tuilleadh a fháil amach faoin tionscnamh. Bhí Caoimhín flaithiúil lena chuid ama agus ba mhór agam an deis a scéal a chloisteáil agus a roinnt._____________________________________________________________________________________________In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, I speak with Caoimhín Mac Uilín from Kilkenny, who is now based in London. Caoimhín is the founder of Rí Rá agus Rith, a running club that brings Irish speakers together to run, socialise and use Irish in an active and welcoming environment. We discuss where the idea came from, who is involved, and how the club has developed since it began. We also talk about the influence of the Irish-speaking GAA club Na Gaeil Óga in Dublin, where Caoimhín played hurling while studying in the city, and how that experience inspired him to create a similar Irish-language community in London. The conversation also touches on the marathons he has completed, including the story of how an unexpected O’Neills GAA jersey helped carry him through the final kilometres of a race. We reflect on how running and walking through a city can reveal so much about its history, character, and hidden stories. This conversation began after I came across Caoimhín posting on Cogar about Rí Rá agus Rith — and I wanted to find out more about the idea behind it. Caoimhín was generous enough to give me his time, and I really appreciate the opportunity to hear and share his story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

#37b Níos Éasca: Snáitheanna na Staire | The Threads of History (GA-EN)
In this episode of GTL, we take a journey through history - but not through dates, battles, or great historical figures. Instead, it begins with a small house beside a lake outside Berlin, a book that sat unread on a shelf for ten years, and one simple question: why are some of us so drawn to history? From Horrible Histories to Age of Empires, from fantasy maps to podcasts about worlds long gone, this is an episode about the doors that history opens for us. About the threads that connect people, places, and different eras. And about that feeling when you realise there is always another story behind the one in front of you.An episode about curiosity, storytelling, and the things that capture a child's imagination. About teaching, parenthood, and the challenge of raising children in a world where every question can be answered instantly. And above all, an episode about the threads we follow through books, games, maps, and stories — and why we keep wanting to see where they lead._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________San eagrán seo de GTL, téann muid ar thuras trí stair — ach ní trí dhátaí, cathanna ná ainmneacha móra. Faoi na snáitheanna a nascann daoine, áiteanna agus tréimhsí éagsúla. Agus faoin mothúchán a thagann nuair a thuigeann tú go bhfuil scéal eile i gcónaí taobh thiar den cheann atá os do chomhair.Eagrán faoi fhiosracht, faoi scéalaíocht, agus faoi na rudaí a mhúsclaíonn samhlaíocht páiste. Faoi mhúinteoireacht, faoi thuismitheoireacht, agus faoin dúshlán atá roimh ghlúin atá ag fás aníos le freagraí láithreacha ar gach ceist.Agus thar aon rud eile, eagrán faoi na snáitheanna a leanann muid trí leabhair, cluichí, léarscáileanna agus scéalta — agus faoin bhfáth a mbíonn muid fós ag iarraidh a fheiceáil cá dtugann siad sinn. In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, I ask a simple question: why am I not excited about the World Cup?The story starts in 2002 - in Saipan, in Cork, in my childminder's house - and takes me through those magical years between 2004 and 2008, through FourFourTwo magazines, through der Sommermärchen in Germany, and on to Qatar, to 2026, and to a question I still cannot fully answer. This is an episode about sport, memory, and the kind of magic you build in your head when you are young. About the way sport can be more than sport - an image of the world, a connection to a place, a part of who you are.And about my little girl - three years old now - and the World Cup that will be hers when she turns eleven._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________'This episode was inspired by the following newspaper article: https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/2026/06/03/paul-howard-the-world-cup-is-the-greatest-thrill-ever-as-long-as-you-arent-there/________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________San eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, cuirim ceist shimplí: cén fáth nach bhfuil sceitimíní orm faoin gCorn na Domhanda?Tosaíonn an scéal i 2002 - i Saipan, i gCorcaigh, i dteach mo childminder - agus tugann sé mé tríd na blianta iontacha sin idir 2004 agus 2008, tríd na hirisleabhair FourFourTwo, tríd der Sommermärchen sa Ghearmáin, agus ar aghaidh go Qatar, go 2026, agus go dtí ceist nach bhfuil freagra agam uirthi fós.Is eagrán é seo faoi spóirt, cuimhne, agus an saghas draíochta a chruthaíonn tú i do cheann agus tú óg. About the way sport can be more than sport - an image of the world, a connection to a place, a part of who you are.And about my little girl - three years old now - and the World Cup that will be hers when she turns eleven._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________'This episode was inspired by the following newspaper article: https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/2026/06/03/paul-howard-the-world-cup-is-the-greatest-thrill-ever-as-long-as-you-arent-there/ Hosted on Acast. Bonus: Seacht mBliana i ndiaidh GOT: Part 2
Seacht mbliana tar éis dheireadh Game of Thrones, leanaimid ar aghaidh leis an scéal - an uair seo i mBonn, i mí Aibreáin 2019, agus Séasúr 8 ag teacht amach seachtain i ndiaidh seachtaine. Agus mé díreach tar éis bogadh go dtí an Ghearmáin, gan mórán struchtúir ná plean soiléir don chéad chéim eile den saol, bhí Westeros fós mar chineál compánaigh dom agus mé ag iarraidh mo bhealach féin a aimsiú.Sa dara cuid seo, labhraím faoi dheireadh na sraithe, faoi na “cracks” a bhí le feiceáil fiú roimh Séasúr 8, agus faoin gcúis nach gceapaim go bhfeicfimid rud cosúil le GOT arís. Ní hamháin mar gheall ar an tsraith féin, ach mar gheall ar an idirlíon, streaming, agus an áit a raibh muid inár saol ag an am sin.Seo eagrán faoi endings - deireadh sraithe, deireadh ré áirithe den idirlíon, agus deireadh tréimhse i mo shaol féin freisin.Faigh cupán tae, cuir ort na headphones, agus tar liom ar ais go Bonn, 2019.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Seven years after the end of Game of Thrones, we continue the story - this time in Bonn, in April 2019, as Season 8 arrived week by week. Having just moved to Germany, with no real structure and no clear idea what the next stage of life would look like, Westeros became a strange kind of companion while I tried to figure things out.In this second part, I talk about the ending of the series, the cracks that were already appearing long before Season 8, and why I don’t think we’ll ever see another cultural phenomenon quite like GOT again. Not just because of the show itself, but because of the internet, streaming culture, and where many of us were in our lives at that moment in time. This episode is about endings - the end of a TV series, the end of a certain era of the internet, and the end of a particular chapter of my own life too.Grab a cup of tea, put the headphones on, and come back with me to Bonn, 2019. #33b Níos Éasca: Cuimhne na hÁite: Foréigean an tSimplithe - Memory of Place and the Violence of Simplicity (GA-EN)
In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear — “Cuimhne na hÁite (The Memory of Place)” - we begin with a single word… and the weight it carries. From there, the conversation expands into language, land, and memory — and how meaning can shift when things are renamed, reframed, or simplified.Through personal reflection, reading, and a series of wider examples, one idea keeps surfacing: the quiet danger of reducing complex realities into something neat, simple… and incomplete.A reflective episode that sits with the question, rather than trying to resolve it._____________________________________________________________________________________________________Sa eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear — “Cuimhne na hÁite” — tosaíonn sé amach le focal amháin… agus an meáchan atá leis.Ón bpointe sin amach, leathnaíonn an comhrá amach go dtí an gaol idir teanga, talamh agus cuimhne — agus an chaoi a n-athraíonn rudaí nuair a chuirtear ainm nua orthu, nó nuair a shimplithear iad.Trí léamh pearsanta, taisteal trí smaointe, agus roinnt samplaí ón saol mór, tagann téama amháin chun cinn arís agus arís eile — an baol a bhaineann le castacht a laghdú go rud éasca, soiléir… agus mícheart.Eagrán machnamhach eile — ag fanacht leis an gceist seachas freagra a lorg. Seacht mbliana tar éis deireadh Game of Thrones, téim siar go dtí an tús — ó na chéad leabhair a léigh mé i gCorcaigh, go dtí an tsraith teilifíse a tháinig chun bheith ina cuid mhór de mo shaol sna fichidí. Seo scéal pearsanta faoi dhomhan Westeros, faoi charachtair a mhúnlaigh comhráite, cairdis agus blianta éagsúla den saol.Sa chéad chuid seo, filleann muid ar an mbuaicphointe — an t-am nuair a bhí Game of Thrones i lár an chultúir, agus i lár mo shaol féin freisin.Faigh cupán tae, agus tar liom ar an turas seo.__________________________________________________________________________________________________Seven years after the end of Game of Thrones, I go back to where it all began — from the first books I read in Cork to the TV series that became a major part of my twenties. In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear — Mo Shíceolaíocht Airgid (My Psychology of Money)How does where we grow up shape the way we think about money? Drawing on Morgan Housel's The Psychology of Money, Oisín reflects on his own relationship with money — from growing up during the Celtic Tiger and the crash that followed, to the very different financial culture he found when he moved to Germany. The episode explores why Ireland and Germany — two countries shaped by very different histories — produce such different instincts around money and investing, and why none of us are as irrational as we might seem. A personal, reflective episode about culture, history, and the person we are still becoming.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________Sa eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear — Mo Shíceolaíocht AirgidCén chaoi a múnlaíonn an áit inar fhásamar aníos an caidreamh atá againn le hairgead?
Tá Seán ag cur faoi i mBonn chomh maith—tháinig sé dhá sheachtain roimhem sa bhliain 2019. Seacht mbliana níos déanaí, tá an bheirt againn fós anseo, ag obair inár bpostanna féin, agus teaghlaigh ag gach duine againn sa chathair. Tá Bonn ag teacht inár n-áit cónaithe—cé go bhfuil Corcaigh i gcónaí mar ár n-áit dúchais!Tá Seán ag obair le IRENA, ag déanamh mallachtanna ar chórais fuinnimh inathnuaite agus ag cur le bealaí chun cinn chun dul i ngleic leis an athrú aeráide. Tá sé ag cur faoi i mBonn lena bhean chéile Vítneamach agus a linbh óg.Sa chomhrá seo, pléann muid:A chuid oibre agus an dóchas atá ann maidir leis an ngéarchéim aeráide.Cluichí sacair sa Ghearmáin (agus an toradh a bhíonn orthu!).An phósadh traidisiúnta a bhí acu sa Vítneam.Thit an glaoch uair nó dhó, ach lean Seán ar aghaidh go maith—like a pro!Nóta: Níl aon intro sa chlár seo - táimid ag dul díreach isteach de bharr interference ar an micreafón. Ba chóir dom an intro a thaifeadadh roimh an eagarthóireacht a dhéanamh, ach mar gheall ar an interference a bhí ar an micreafón, bhí orm an fuaim a ghearradh agus a chur in eagar, rud a rinne sé deacair an intro a chur isteach ina dhiaidh sin.__________________________________________________________________________________________In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, we chat with Seán Ó Coileáin—a long-time friend, fellow Corkonian, and UCC contemporary. Seán also lives in Bonn—he arrived two weeks before me in 2019. Seven years later, we’re both still here, working in our respective jobs, and each of us has started a family in the city. Bonn is starting to feel like home—even if Cork will always be Cork!Seán works with IRENA, modelling renewable energy systems and helping to pave the way in combating climate change. He lives in Bonn with his Vietnamese wife and their young child. In this conversation, we discuss:His work and the hope he finds in tackling the climate crisis.Football matches in Germany (and the results they bring!).Their traditional wedding in Vietnam. The call dropped once or twice, but Seán kept the conversation going like a pro!Note: There is no intro in this episode - we dive straight in due to interference on the microphone. I should have recorded the intro before editing, but because of mic interference, I had to cut and edit a lot of the audio, which made it too difficult to insert the intro afterward. #27b Níos Éasca: An Bhrionglóid, An Casadh agus An Bád - The Dream, the Hinge and the Boat (GA-EN)
In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear — An Brionglóid, An Casadh agus An Bád - The Dream, the Hinge and the BoatIt starts with the dream — the dream - the one we have all had. We are back in our old school classrooms, preparing for the exams, sometimes in the hall itself, taking the test. The Leaving Cert dream is one of the most powerful dreams we have — and it can strike at any time. In that moment, we are floating in a strange yet familiar world. A world we can never return to — and often don’t particularly want to — yet there is something oddly comforting about it.In this episode of GTL, we explore this phenomenon: the comfort of surface-level comparisons in life, the structure and clarity of that time, and the understanding that it was never quite that straightforward. We also examine hinge moments — the few points or events that can utterly change the course of a life. It’s not about “what ifs” or regret, but a reflection on how key experiences shape us. An adult reflection on formative school years and why they still visit us in our dreams.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________San eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear — An Bhrionglóid, An Casadh agus An BádTosaíonn sé leis an bhrionglóid — an brionglóid - an ceann a bhíonn againn go léir. Táimid ar ais sna seomraí ranga ár sean-scoile, ag ullmhú don Ardteist, uaireanta sa halla féin agus ag déanamh na scrúdaithe. Is ceann de na brionglóidí is cumhachtaí é an aisling Ardteist — agus d’fhéadfadh sé teacht ar aon am. Sa nóiméad seo, táimid ag snámh i ndomhan aisteach ach eolach ar bhealach éigin. Domhan nach féidir linn filleadh air riamh — agus go minic nach dteastaíonn uainn filleadh air... ach, ag an am céanna, tá rud éigin compórdach faoi.Sa eagrán seo de GTL, iniúchfaimid an feiniméan seo — tugaimid faoi mhaitheas an chomparáid superficial sa saol, struchtúr agus soiléireacht an ama sin, agus ag an am céanna ag tuiscint nach raibh sé riamh chomh simplí sin. Ní bhaineann sé le “cad a bheadh” nó le díomá — ach le tuiscint ar an tionchar a d’fhéadfadh imeachtaí ar leith a imirt ar shaol agus ar fhorbairt phearsanta. #27 An Bhrionglóid, An Casadh agus An Bád
Sa eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear — An Bhrionglóid, An Casadh agus An BádTosaíonn sé leis an bhrionglóid — an brionglóid - an ceann a bhíonn againn go léir. Táimid ar ais sna seomraí ranga ár sean-scoile, ag ullmhú don Ardteist, uaireanta sa halla féin agus ag déanamh na scrúdaithe. Is ceann de na brionglóidí is cumhachtaí é an aisling Ardteist — agus d’fhéadfadh sé teacht ar aon am. Sa nóiméad seo, táimid ag snámh i ndomhan aisteach ach eolach ar bhealach éigin. Domhan nach féidir linn filleadh air riamh — agus go minic nach dteastaíonn uainn filleadh air... ach, ag an am céanna, tá rud éigin compórdach faoi.Sa eagrán seo de GTL, iniúchfaimid an feiniméan seo — tugaimid faoi mhaitheas an chomparáid superficial sa saol, struchtúr agus soiléireacht an ama sin, agus ag an am céanna ag tuiscint nach raibh sé riamh chomh simplí sin. Pléitear freisin na “hinge moments” — na nóiméid nó na pointí a d’fhéadfadh an saol a athrú go hiomlán. Ní bhaineann sé le “cad a bheadh” nó le díomá — ach le tuiscint ar an tionchar a d’fhéadfadh imeachtaí ar leith a imirt ar shaol agus ar fhorbairt phearsanta. Machnamh do dhuine fásta ar na blianta scoile móra agus cén fáth a dtagann siad ar ais i mo bhrionglóidí fós.________________________________________________________________________________________________________In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear — An Brionglóid, An Casadh agus An Bád - The Dream, the Hinge and the BoatIt starts with the dream — the dream - the one we have all had. An adult reflection on formative school years and why they still visit us in our dreams. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

#26 John Ó'Ríordán - Cathair Chorcaí | Sos Lóin
Sa chlár seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, labhraímid le John, Corcaíoch bródúil a raibh caidreamh casta aige leis an nGaeilge ar scoil — agus, le fírinne, níor thaitin sí leis ar chor ar bith ar feadh na mblianta.Ach tháinig athrú intinne air. Thuig sé, in ainneoin na drochthaithí sin, go raibh sé ag iarraidh an Ghaeilge ina shaol. Ní raibh ranganna eagraithe dó — ní hé sin a stíl ar chor ar bith. Bhí sé ag iarraidh caint, bualadh le daoine, agus an Ghaeilge a úsáid go sóisialta. As sin a rugadh Sos Lóin — Gaeltacht bheag idir ceapairí agus cupáin chaife i lár Chathair Chorcaí. Ó shin i leith, tá pobal bríomhar fásta timpeall air, agus tá John anois mar admin ar an ngrúpa WhatsApp Cathair Chorcaí, a roinneann imeachtaí Gaeilge ar fud na cathrach agus níos faide i gcéin.Níl a chuid Gaeilge foirfe — ach cad faoi sin? “Lofa Líofa” atá ann, mar a deir sé féin, agus sin maith go leor. Sea, tá an ghramadach tábhachtach uaireanta — ach go minic, is í an chumarsáid an rud is tábhachtaí. Agus is cumarsáidí den scoth é John — fear sóisialta, oscailte, agus eagraí den chéad scoth a thugann daoine le chéile trí mheán na Gaeilge.Comhrá iontach le haoi geal, cairdiúil, lán fuinnimh — scéalta, gáire, agus b’fhéidir beagán inspioráide dóibh siúd atá beagáinín neamhchinnte faoina gcuid Gaeilge féin._________________________________________________________________________In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, we chat with John, a proud Corkonian who had a complicated relationship with Irish at school — in fact, he hated it for years. But something shifted. Despite those early experiences, he realised he wanted Irish back in his life. Formal classes weren’t for him — he needed conversation, connection, and community.Out of that grew Sos Lóin — a lunchtime pop-up Gaeltacht in the heart of Cork City. What started as a way for him to practise during his lunch break has grown into a vibrant weekly gathering. John is also now the admin of the WhatsApp group Cathair Chorcaí, which shares Irish language events happening in and around Cork City. His Irish isn’t perfect — but who cares? As he says himself, he’s “Lofa Líofa”… and that’s more than good enough. Yes, grammar has its place — but more often than not, communication is what truly matters. And John is a natural communicator — a sociable, open, and energetic organiser who brings people together through Irish.A great chat with a bright and bubbly guest — full of stories, warmth, and perhaps a little inspiration for anyone feeling unsure about their own Irish. #25b Níos Éasca: Idir Spás agus Am: How my 3-Year Old has Given Me an Existential Crisis (GA - EN)
In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, I take you on a journey through space and time, from bedtime stories with my daughters to the farthest planets, stars, and galaxies. We reflect on scale — what is small and what is vast — from the universe’s physical history to human history and our own lives on the “pale blue dot.” I share personal reflections, laughter, curiosity, and wonder as we explore remarkable cultures and histories, and consider how brief our time on this planet really is.This episode is full of curiosity, play, and reflection — perfect for anyone wanting to see the world from a bigger perspective. This is the bilingual EN-GA version. #24b Níos Éasca: An tÉireannach is Cáiliúla nár Chuala Tú Riamh Faoi (GA-EN)
In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, we take a reflective journey through music, identity, and Irishness abroad — through the story of an Irish person who carved out a unique place at the heart of the German music industry. The episode explores what it means to fully step into another culture: speaking the language fluently but without hiding an accent, embracing difference rather than smoothing it away, and having the courage to commit to a place that was once unfamiliar. This is not a biography, but a reflection on what happens when we bring pieces of ourselves with us overseas — our language, our outlook, our “it’ll be grand” — and when we engage seriously and intentionally with the place we now call home.An episode about diving in, holding onto identity without disguising it, and how Irishness can become a strength rather than a barrier.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________Sa chlár seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, téimid ar thuras machnaimh faoi cheol, féiniúlacht agus Éireannachas thar lear — trí scéal Éireannaigh a rinne a bhealach féin i gcroílár thionscal ceoil na Gearmáine.Pléitear an chaoi ar féidir áit uathúil a chruthú i gcultúr eile: an bhéim Éireannach fós le cloisteáil, an teanga á labhairt go líofa ach gan í a cheilt, agus an misneach dul isteach go hiomlán i saol nach raibh ar eolas ar dtús.Ní clár beathaisnéise é seo, ach machnamh ar an méid a tharlaíonn nuair a thugaimid píosaí dínn féin linn thar lear — ár dteanga, ár ndearcadh, ár “it’ll be grand” — agus nuair a ghlacaimid go dáiríre leis an áit ina mbímid anois.Clár faoin tumadh isteach, faoin bhféiniúlacht a choinneáil gan í a cheilt, agus faoin mbealach a bhféadfadh Éireannachas a bheith ina neart, ní ina bhac. #23b Níos Éasca: “An Glúin Imníoch (The Anxious Generation)” (GA-EN)
In the second episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear for 2026 — “An Glúin Imníoch (The Anxious Generation)” — Oisín reflects on growing up at a unique crossroads between a play-based childhood and an emerging screen-based one. He recalls a time when games consoles began appearing in bedrooms, yet still served as a way to connect with friends in the real world, and when mobile phones were simple devices that represented independence from parents — rather than the all-consuming tools they can be today.Drawing on Jonathan Haidt’s book The Anxious Generation, the episode explores the impact of smartphones, social media, and constant connectivity on Gen Z, including rising levels of social anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. While the book’s key ideas are discussed, listeners are encouraged to read it themselves for a fuller understanding. The episode also takes a personal turn, as Oisín shares how he is preparing for his own children to grow up in a world shaped by generative AI, large language models, social media pressures, and “always-on” digital life. A thoughtful and timely conversation about childhood, technology, and what lies ahead for the next generation. This is the bilingual English-Irish version._______________________________________________________________________________________________________Sa dara eagrán de Gaeilge Thar Lear in 2026 — “An Glúin Imníoch (The Anxious Generation)” — déanann Oisín machnamh ar a óige féin agus ar an aistriú ó shaol súgartha lasmuigh go saol atá ag éirí níos digiteach. Pléitear an chaoi ar tháinig consóil cluichí isteach sna seomraí codlata den chéad uair, agus conas a bhí fóin phóca (gan a bheith cliste!) ina siombail neamhspleáchais ó thuismitheoirí — seachas an “ghaiste” a mbíonn siad inniu do go leor daoine óga.Bunaithe ar an leabhar The Anxious Generation le Jonathan Haidt, breathnaítear ar an tionchar atá ag fóin chliste, na meáin shóisialta agus nascacht bhuan ar mheabhairshláinte ghlúin Gen Z — ó imní shóisialta go dúlagar agus níos faide i gcéin. Cé go dtugtar léargas ar phríomh-smaointe an leabhair, spreagtar éisteoirí chun é a léamh iad féin le haghaidh tuiscint níos doimhne.Ina theannta sin, labhraíonn Oisín go pearsanta faoin gcaoi a bhfuil sé ag ullmhú dá pháistí féin sa domhan nua seo — domhan ina bhfuil AI giniúnach, LLManna, tionchair shóisialta ar líne agus scáileáin i ngach áit. Eipeasóid mhachnamhach, phearsanta agus thráthúil faoin gcaidreamh atá againn leis an teicneolaíocht agus leis an óige.Seo an leagan Béarla-Gaeilge dhátheangach. Hosted on Acast. #22b Ag Ullmhú don Bhliain Nua 2026 - Preparing for 2026 / Atomic Habits (GA-EN)
In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, Oisín talks about New Year’s Resolutions. He reflects on how starting a journaling habit back in 2015 led him to create annual goals that keep him motivated throughout the year. These goals encompass a range of objectives, including reading targets, running milestones, investment plans, personal development, and various challenges. One of his goals for 2025 was to start Gaeilge Thar Lear — and with more than 40 episodes now published, it’s safe to say that goal has been well and truly achieved. He also explains the systems he uses to stay on track with those goals.Oisín discusses lessons from Atomic Habits by James Clear, a powerful book for anyone interested in changing their habits and achieving long-term personal development. Some of the key takeaways include the Four Laws of Behaviour Change, the importance of shaping your environment, building identity-based habits, and focusing on consistent small steps in the right direction. When we change what we do every day — our habits — we move closer to becoming a better version of ourselves. This is a New Year’s Resolutions-style episode; it won’t be for everyone… but if you have big goals or ideas for 2026, you might find it useful. This is the bilingual version Gaeilge-Béarla.______________________________________________________________________________________________San eagrán seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, pléann Oisín rúin don Bhliain Nua. Insíonn sé conas a thosaigh sé ag scríobh dialainne in 2015, agus gur spreag sé sin é chun spriocanna bliantúla a leagan síos — spriocanna a choinníonn dírithe agus spreagtha é i rith na bliana. Bíonn a spriocanna ag baint le léamh, le rith, le hinfheistíocht, agus le forbairt phearsanta agus dúshláin éagsúla. Ceann dá spriocanna in 2025 ná Gaeilge Thar Lear a thosú — agus anois agus os cionn 40 podchraoladh déanta aige, is léir gur baineadh an sprioc sin amach go breá! Labhraíonn sé freisin faoin gcóras a úsáideann sé chun fanacht ar an mbóthar i dtreo a chuid spriocanna.Pléann sé na ceachtanna tábhachtacha ón leabhar Atomic Habits le James Clear — leabhar cumhachtach do dhuine ar bith atá ag iarraidh a nósanna a athrú agus forbairt phearsanta a bhaint amach. Áirítear leis seo na Ceithre Dhlí maidir le hAthrú Iompair, tábhacht na timpeallachta, nósanna bunaithe ar fhéiniúlacht, agus céimeanna beaga comhsheasmhacha sa treo ceart. Má athraímid cad a dhéanaimid gach lá — ár nósanna — is féidir linn oibriú i dtreo leagan níos fearr dínn féin.Is eagrán é seo ar théama Rún na Bliana Nua; b’fhéidir nach mbeidh sé oiriúnach do chách… ach má tá spriocanna móra nó smaointe móra agat do 2026, seans maith go mbeidh sé úsáideach duit.Béarla-Gaeilge.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hosted on Acast. Sa chlár seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, féachaim siar ar 2025 agus cuirim ceist shimplí: cén sort bliain a bhí inti?Ar ardán an domhain mhóir, bhí duine amháin chun tosaigh ar gach rud — ach mar a léigh mé uair amháin ar chomhartha i dtigh tábhairne in An Daingean: “No Trump Talk.” Mana maith le coinneáil i gcuimhne, dar liom.Is ramall réamh-Nollag atá anseo, áit a labhraím faoi líon na n-éisteoirí le Gaeilge Thar Lear, roinnim libh na háiteanna ar fud an domhain as a mbíonn sibh ag éisteacht, agus déanaim machnamh ar chuid de bhuaicphointí pearsanta na bliana. An raibh 2025 ina bliain mhaith? Cén leabhar ab fhearr a léigh mé? Cad iad na podchraoltaí a raibh mé ag éisteacht leo i rith na bliana?Taifeadadh an eipeasóid seo tar éis chlár na seachtaine seo chugainn, “Ag Féachaint Chun Cinn go 2026”, rud a bhí beagáinín ait. Taifeadadh go déanach san oíche í freisin, agus gan ach nótaí leathchríochnaithe agam, tar éis cúpla lá dúshlánach agus páistí tinn sa teach — ach sin é an saol (agus an phodchraoltóireacht!).Cibé áit ina bhfuil sibh, tá súil agam go mbeidh Nollaig álainn agaibh agus go mbainfidh sibh taitneamh as an am a chaitheamh le cairde, le clann agus leo siúd is ansa libh.Nollaig Shona,Oisín_________________________________________________________________________________________This episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear looks back at 2025 and asks a simple question: what kind of year was it?On the world stage, one man seemed to dominate everything — but as a sign I once saw in a pub in An Daingean put it: “No Trump Talk.” A good mantra to keep in mind. This is a pre-Christmas ramble where I talk through the listening figures for Gaeilge Thar Lear, share where in the world you’re all tuning in from, and reflect on some of my personal highlights from the year. Was 2025 a good year? What was the best book I read? Which podcasts did I spend the most time listening to?This episode was recorded after next week’s “Looking Ahead to 2026” podcast, which made for a slightly strange experience. It was also recorded quite late and with only half-finished notes, following a few challenging days with sick children — but such is podcasting.Wherever you are, I hope you have a lovely Christmas and get to enjoy some quality time with friends, family, and loved ones.Nollaig Shona,Oisín Hosted on Acast. #20 Ronán O'Laoire | Baile Átha Chliath | Amsterdam | Cogar
Sa chlár seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, labhraíonn Oisín le Ronán Ó Laoíre, Baile Átha Cliathach atá lonnaithe in Amstardam. Is saineolaí i bhforbairt bogearraí é Ronán, le taithí ar fhorbairt gréasáin, bainistíocht agus ról mar CTO, agus é tar éis obair le roinnt comhlachtaí móra san Ísiltír. Faoi láthair, tá sé ag forbairt ardán sóisialta nua don Ghaeilge darbh ainm Cogar.Sa chomhrá seo, pléimid a óige le Gaeilge i mBaile Átha Cliath, an bogadh go hAmstardam ar feadh bliana – agus é fós ann naoi mbliana ina dhiaidh sin – a chait, a chomhpháirtí saoil, agus ar ndóigh, Cogar.Bhí roinnt fadhbanna beaga leis an bhfuaim le linn an taifeadta, ach rinneadh gach iarracht iad a cheartú san eagrán deiridh. Má thugann sibh aon chur isteach ar an bhfuaim faoi deara, gabhaimid leithscéal – agus tá súil againn go mbainfidh sibh taitneamh as an gcomhrá seo le Ronán.________________________________________________________________________________________________In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, Oisín speaks with Ronán O’Laoire, a Dubliner based in Amsterdam. Ronán is a software development expert with experience across web development, management, and CTO roles, having worked with several major companies in the Netherlands. He is currently developing a new social platform for Irish speakers called Cogar. In this conversation, we talk about growing up in Dublin with Irish, moving to Amsterdam for what was meant to be a year and still being there nine years later, his cats, and, of course, Cogar. There were a few minor audio issues with microphones during the recording, but these have been addressed as much as possible in the final edit. If you notice anything in the background, please accept my apologies in advance — and we hope you enjoy this conversation with Ronán. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

#19b Níos Éasca: Nuair a bhí mé ar TG4: Cluiche as Baile (GA-EN)
Sa chlár seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, labhraíonn Oisín faoi na deiseanna móra nár shíl sé riamh a thiocfadh ina threo agus é ina chathaoirleach ar theilgean Chóilín na Coillíne. Deirtear gur dúirt Napoleon gur “fearr leis ginearál ádhúil ná ginearál maith”, agus is cosúil go raibh an t-ádh sin ag Oisín – mar le linn an ama sin bhí sé le feiceáil ar Nuacht RTÉ, Prime Time, teilifís náisiúnta na Gearmáine (ZDF), National Geographic, agus ar an sár-dhoiciméad ar TG4, Cluiche As Baile, le Jack agus Cian Desmond.Cosúil le go leor eagráin eile, níl mórán pleanála ná nótaí taobh thiar den cheann seo – díreach comhrá saor, spontáineach. Seo an leagan Béarla-Gaeilge - dhátheangach..Tá súil agam go mbainfidh sibh taitneamh as!ZDF le Achim Winter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=EQ5nN7Q9j6s&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fcologneceltics.com%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjYCluiche as Baile Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMLl1WZHEws_______________________________________________________________________________In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, Oisín talks about some of the unexpected advantages that came his way during his time as chairperson of the Cologne Celtics — living proof of the quote often attributed to Napoleon: “I’d rather have a lucky general than a good one.”During that period, Oisín somehow found himself on RTÉ News, Prime Time, German national television (ZDF), the National Geographic podcast, and a brilliant TG4 documentary called Cluiche As Baile, directed by Jack and Cian Desmond. You can find it on the TG4 Player - go watch it... stop what you're doing and go watch it now!As with many episodes, this one is recorded with very little planning and not many notes — another loose, freestyle, free-flowing conversation. #18b Níos Éasca: An Ghearmáin i mo 20í agus i mo 30í: Ó Eachtraíocht go Fíorshaol (GA-EN)
Sa chlár seo de Gaeilge Thar Lear, breathnaím siar ar an saol a bhí agam sa Ghearmáin i mo 20í — tréimhse lán d’eachtraí, taisteal, cairde nua agus an tuiscint go raibh an domhan oscailte romham. Ansin cuirim é sin i gcomparáid leis na 30í, nuair a thagann an smaoineamh mór sin chugat: “seo é anois — seo mo shaol buan.”Pléim an meascán casta sin de mhothúcháin: a bheith i bhfad ó bhaile, ó theaghlach agus ó sheanchairde, agus ag an am céanna a bheith sásta sa ghnáthshaol nua. Ach ní scéal rómánsúil é — tá na frustrachtaí ann freisin: an mothú go bhfuil tú beagáinín “greamaithe”, na paistí beaga a chuireann teorainn le spontaneity, agus na comharsana níos sine a chuireann isteach ort níos minice ná mar a chuireann siad chun suaimhnis thú.Níl mórán struchtúir ar an gcaint seo — comhrá cineál “glao teileafóin” atá ann — ach tá súil agam go mbeidh sé macánta, in-insinte agus b'fhéidir fiú beagáinín eolach daoibh siúd atá ag tógáil saoil thar lear. Seo an leagan Béarla-Gaeilge - dhátheangach. Bainigí taitneamh as!____________________________________________________________________In this episode of Gaeilge Thar Lear, I reflect on my life in Germany in my 20s — a time filled with adventure, travel, new friendships, and the feeling that everything was still open and possible. Then I contrast it with life in my 30s, when that big realisation arrives: “this is it now — this is my permanent life.”I discuss the complex mix of emotions that come with being far from home, family, and old friends, while building a new life with its own rhythms and small joys. But it’s not all cosy routines — there’s plenty of frustration too: feeling held back, the limits that come with small children, and the realities of dealing with older neighbours who can sometimes be… less than easy. This episode has no real plan — more of a free-flowing, phone-call-style chat — but hopefully it captures something real and recognisable about settling abroad. This is the bilingual Irish-English version - Gaeilge-Béarla - Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ó The Franciscan Well i gCorcaigh – an áit ar fhoghlaim mé go bhféadfadh beoir a bheith blasta – go mo chéad oíche dhíomách i Marburg, ó an beoir is fearr a d'ól mé riamh i München go mo thurnamh i nErlangen nuair a chaill mé mo chairde ag Bierfest... tá sé uilig anseo!Pléim an difríocht chultúrtha idir an Ghearmáin agus Éire maidir le beoir – cén fáth a gceiliúrann na Gearmánaigh an táirge féin agus cén fáth a gceiliúraimid an craic a chruthaíonn sé. Tá an Reinheitsgebot, rivalries peile idir Dortmund agus Gelsenkirchen, agus an nóiméad i nDortmund nuair a thuig mé go raibh mé ag éirí níos sine.Más maith leat scéalta faoi dhisasters Erasmus, cultúr na beorach, nó an t-aistear ó bheith 21 go duine nach n-ólann mórán sa lá atá inniu ann – éist leis seo!Seo an leagan dhátheangach Béarla-Gaeilge. From The Franciscan Well in Cork – where I learned that beer could actually taste good – to my disappointing first night in Marburg, from the best beer I ever had at Brauhaus Augustiner in Munich to my complete disaster in Erlangen when I lost my friends at a Bierfest... it's all here!I explore the cultural differences between Germany and Ireland when it comes to beer – why Germans celebrate the product itself and why we celebrate the craic it creates. There's the Reinheitsgebot (Beer Purity Law), football rivalries between Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen, and the moment in Dortmund when I realised I was getting older. If you enjoy stories about Erasmus disasters, beer culture, or the journey from being 21 to someone who doesn't drink much these days – give this a listen! This is the bilingual English-Gaeilge version.
